Justin Thomas’s diet is over: ‘If you guys hear of me doing that again, tell me to stop’

“If you guys hear of me doing that again, tell me to stop.”

NASSAU, Bahamas — The year of living dairy and gluten-free is over for Justin Thomas.

Chalk it up to a failed experiment but credit to Thomas, the two-time PGA Championship winner, for leaving no stone unturned in his quest for greatness. But living gluten-free and giving up his guilty pleasure of pizza only resulted in being a glutton for punishment: he failed to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs and dropped from No. 8 to No.  27 in the world this year.

“It wasn’t exactly during my best stretch of golf, so I would say if I had it over, I would not do it,” he said Tuesday during a press conference leading into this week’s Hero World Challenge. “Yeah, it’s one of those things, I don’t really give 50 percent too much. I feel like if I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it. I’m going to want to know how it is.”

Thomas, who turned 30 in April, explained earlier this season that he noticed his energy level was low when he competed in extreme heat, so he decided to do some blood work and food sensitivity tests, which resulted in him committing to follow a diet prescribed by Dr. Ara Suppiah, chief medical doctor for NBC Sports and Golf Channel. Thomas told Golfweek in August he ordered three gluten-free pizzas when he got back to the U.S. from the British Open.

“I was supposed to go six months of dairy free, a year of gluten free,” Thomas reminded his questioner. “I think like the six months was right when I was over in the U.K. for Scottish and British and I’m like I’m not going to start this back up in the middle of a tournament because I didn’t know how my body was going to react. Literally not having anything for six months, I thought there was a chance my body would freak out. After shooting about 400 the first two days at The Open Championship, when I got to Minnesota I got a gluten-free pizza like on Monday or Tuesday and I swear I could have cried, it was so good. “

Thomas had previously joked that he might give up one of his Wanamaker Trophies for a pepperoni or meat lover’s pizza.

“And honestly, I just slowly implemented dairy again the next two weeks and I didn’t feel any different, which I was shocked, to be honest. I was pleasantly surprised. I called Ara, who I’ve been working with. I’m like, I’m having gluten, I don’t feel any different after having this again, so I’m going to have it and see how it is. And here we are.”

Thomas said reigning British Open champion Brian Harman put it best. “Basically if you just play like crap for a year, having to diet, then you just go back to it. That’s what he told me.”

And this is what Thomas told the media: “Yeah, if you guys hear of me doing that again, tell me to stop.”

2023 Hero World Challenge odds, course history and picks to win

Tiger is back.

We’re in for a fun week in Albany, Bahamas, for the 2023 Hero World Challenge. Why? The GOAT is back.

Tiger Woods is returning to professional golf for the first time since the Masters earlier this year, a tournament where he made the cut but withdrew on Sunday morning due to aggravating his plantar fasciitis.

Ten days later, Woods announced that he had undergone “a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.”

After staying away for months, we’ve seen Woods start to return to the spotlight. He caddied for his son, Charlie, for four days while carrying the bag and walking — without a limp — every step of the way. His short course at Pebble Beach opened. So, he’s been around.

But we’ve all been waiting for him to tee it up once again, and that moment will come Thursday at the Hero, an event put on by his TGR Foundation.

Joining the 15-time major champion in the field are 19 other highly-ranked players, including his good buddy Justin Thomas, two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler.

Woods isn’t the only player returning from an extended layoff. Will Zalatoris, who suffered a back injury at the 2022 BMW Championship and later withdrew before the 2023 Masters, will make his first start in eight months after undergoing back surgery in April.

Jack Nicklaus and Justin Thomas have teamed up to design Panther National, a new private club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, that officially opens Friday with a star-studded exhibition match.

Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Morgan Hoffmann, Erik van Rooyen and Lexi Thompson will tee it up alongside Thomas for the course opening.

The course will offer up double fairways, deep bunkers and expansive sandy waste areas amid what the club calls an unusual amount of elevation changes for a South Florida course. The club also will feature state-of-the-art training facilities, a 9-hole, par-3 practice course and a huge putting course named The Cub. It’s all attached to a residential offering of 218 high-end, custom estates on 400 acres surrounded by Panther National Wildlife Refuge.

“From the start, the vision was clear – to create a golf experience unlike any other found in South Florida,” Nicklaus said in a media release announcing the opening. “Every opportunity to design a golf course brings challenges, but in the case of Panther National, uniqueness triumphs. You won’t find any golf course remotely close to it in South Florida.”

Carlos Sainz and Justin Thomas win Netflix Cup golf tournament

Could Sainz win another trophy when he races in Las Vegas this weekend?

Carlos Sainz took victory in Las Vegas on the week of the Las Vegas Grand Prix — just not on the track.

Sainz was one of four Formula 1 drivers to take part in the Netflix Cup on Tuesday, a golf tournament at the Wynn Las Vegas that also featured Lando Norris, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly. They were paired with professional golfers Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa and Tony Finau, respectively, in a small matchplay tournament airing live on Netflix.

Sainz is one of the better golfers in the Formula 1 paddock, and he proved it by defeating Norris and Fowler in their match play event. Gasly and Finau matched up with Sainz and Thomas after beating Albon and Homa, and the two came down to the wire on a closest to the pin contest before Sainz and Thomas took the win.

Carlos Sainz subsequently broke the trophy that he and Thomas won after the event, something he’ll look to avoid if he manages to get on the podium in Las Vegas when they race on Sunday at midnight.

Max Homa leads in South Africa with chance at first DP World Tour title

Max Homa has a one-shot lead in South Africa with 18 holes to play.

Max Homa has a chance to do something Sunday he has never done before.

The 32-year-old American can win his first event on the DP World Tour, as he holds the 54-hole lead at the 2023 Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa. Homa shot 3-under 69 on Saturday and holds a one-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

Homa played the front nine in even-par, but he started the back nine with an eagle on the par-5 10th. He added another birdie on the par-5 14th to card a 33 on the back.

Ranked eighth in the world, Homa has six wins on the PGA Tour but hasn’t won on the DP World Tour. That can change Sunday, but there’s an experienced pack chasing him.

Matthieu Pavon, who was tied with Homa after 36 holes, sits solo second at 12 under after a 2-under performance. Nicolai Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Oleson are tied for third at 11 under.

Justin Thomas, who went on a safari adventure with Homa last week, is T-10 at 6 under. He shot even-par in the third round.

Justin Thomas, Max Homa enjoy safari day with wives in South Africa

JT. Homa. And elephants.

Next week, Justin Thomas and Max Homa are set to tee it up in the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club in South Africa.

This weekend, however, the duo and their wives, Jillian Thomas and Lacey Homa, took on a safari ahead of their return to golf for the first time since the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

The PGA Tour posted photos from its social media accounts sharing Thomas and Homa’s experience in the safari, and they also took to Instagram to share special highlights and moments from the excursion.

In addition to Thomas and Homa, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and others will battle it out for one of the biggest golf events all year in South Africa.

Sam Burns and Justin Thomas have been exchanging texts leading up to this week’s LSU-Alabama football game

Sam Burns talked with Golfweek’s David Dusek about this week’s LSU-Alabama football game, trash talking Justin Thomas and more.

Sam Burns played his college golf at LSU, a school just 10 minutes down the road from his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Golfweek‘s equipment guru David Dusek caught up with Burns to talk about the school’s upcoming rivalry football game with Alabama, what it was like playing golf at LSU and what the environment was like in the locker room during his college days.

“Oh, yeah,” Burns said when smiling after being asked if he and Justin Thomas were sending each other texts this week (Thomas played golf in Tuscaloosa). “There’s been many comments exchanged.”

Justin Thomas signs to TGL’s Atlanta Drive GC, becomes first confirmed player-team signing

JT is headed to the ATL.

On Tuesday, the TGL announced Justin Thomas has signed with Atlanta Drive GC. He’s the first player to officially join a TGL team.

“Atlanta and the state of Georgia have been the home to some of the biggest sporting events in the country and I’m excited to represent fans there as part of TGL and Atlanta Drive GC,” Thomas said in a release. “To be aligned with an owner like Arthur Blank and his incredible variety of businesses as they expand their golf portfolio, feels like a great fit for me. I promise our team will compete hard to win championships and have a lot of fun along the way. We will represent Atlanta in the best way possible while helping grow the game everywhere through this unique TGL format.”

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season didn’t go as planned for Thomas, but his resume speaks for itself. He’s won 15 times on Tour, including the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships. Thomas has represented the United States at six team events: 2017, 2019 and 2022 Presidents Cups and 2018, 2020 and 2023 Ryder Cups.

The Atlanta Drive GC’s ownership is led by Blank and AMB Sports and Entertainment, which runs the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United and PGA Tour Superstores. The TGL is a tech-infused league headed by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and their joint venture TMRW Sports.

The first match is set for Jan. 9, 2023 at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
