D1Baseball drops their Week 6 ranking updates and Texas A&M moves back into the Top 5
After a rough outing to start SEC play, Texas A&M (21-3, 3-3 SEC) had a nice bounce back, going 3-1 in the last four games. They started the week by beating a determined Prairie View team 11-9 and then winning their first SEC series, going 2-1 against Mississippi State. Aggie left-hander Justin Lamkin pitched well enough in game three of the series to hold the Bulldogs to a single run and earn SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week.
The Aggies have come back down to earth a little bit now that the level of competition has been elevated. Even with that, A&M still looks like one of the best teams in the nation, and if the pitching can start to find its groove in conference play, this team lives in that top-five ranking throughout the season.

Texas A&M sophomore pitcher Justin Lamkin was named the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week after a strong game against Mississippi State
After a strong start to the season by the Texas A&M pitching rotation, the beginning stages of SEC play were a little unforgiving. They appeared to struggle throughout the Florida game series, dropping the SEC series opener.
A&M fared slightly better in the opening two games against Mississippi State, splitting the first two games. In game three, Justin Lamkin shined the brightest. His 12 strikeouts through seven innings gave the Aggies just what they needed to win game three and take the series.
The SEC recognized the sophomore’s production after the big week by naming him SEC Player of the Week. Below is the excerpt from the release from the SEC officials:
Texas A&M’s Justin Lamkin helped the Aggies to a series-
clinching win against No. 16 Mississippi State, tossing 7.1 innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts on Saturday. The sophomore carried a no-hitter into the fifth and retired 21 of the first 22 batters he faced. He surrendered just one run on the afternoon, and seven of Lamkin’s 12 punch outs were looking in the win.

“It was great getting the love and support from my teammates and all of the 12th Man. It was something that was surreal and really cool.”
Led by 7.1 dominant innings on the mound from sophomore left-handed pitcher Justin Lamkin and 2 home runs from junior outfielder Braden Montgomery, the Texas A&M baseball team earned its first SEC series win this weekend
After the victory versus Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon, both Aggies spoke to the media.
“I think it’s always more impressive to be able to drive to the back side so I would say the first (homer) was my favorite,” Montgomery said. “I was trusting in everything that I’ve built up to this moment. Being able to see and react to what I’m seeing and I got a lot of fastballs. That’s what I enjoy swinging at so it was very fun.”
Lamkin struggled on the bump last weekend at Florida but clearly shook it off prior to Saturday’s start.
“It was great getting the love and support from my teammates and all of the 12th Man. It was something that was surreal and really cool to get to experience that,” Lamkin recalled. “It was not the first time but that (ovation) was extra loud, you could tell.
“I’d say overall fastball command (was the difference). That’s one thing that coach Walsh told me after the outing,” Lamkin explained. “So I took this week to work on that and I think it played out being able to throw the fastball where I want and establish all the plate.”

“Today (Lamkin) had that fastball command,” Schlossnagle said. “Then Braden, what more do you need to say? A star player in star moments.”
The Texas A&M baseball team earned its first SEC series victory of the season with a 6-1 win versus Mississippi State at Blue Bell Park.
Following the triumph, head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke about the impact sophomore left-handed pitcher Justin Lamkin and junior outfielder Braden Montgomery made on Saturday’s game.
“Obviously, awesome days for Lamkin and Braden,” Schlossnagle said. “I’m super proud of Justin, he didn’t have the greatest start to the season and then last week was a little bit better.
“The thing that he did for us all last year is have good fastball command and his offspeed pitches were a little short. This year, his offspeed pitches are much better but his fastball command kind of went away from him. Today he had that fastball command, especially in against those good right-handed hitters like Jordan and the other right-handed guy. Kudos to him, he was awesome and I was trying to ride him as much as I could because I felt like he earned it. Sometimes that helps boost a pitcher’s ego when you do that.
“Then Braden, what more do you need to say? A star player in star moments.”

The Texas A&M baseball tumbled a few spots in the rankings after dropping the SEC series opener to the Florida Gators
Texas A&M hit their first roadblock on the season when they traveled to Gainsville Florida to take on the No. 8 Florida Gators. The pitching took a step back after being one of the top rotations in the country for the first few weeks. The lack of quality opponents could take some of the blame as the SEC is a whole other ball game compared to the non-conference schedule the Aggies completed with an unblemished record.
There was a lot to learn from the past weekend and now that the honeymoon is over, this talented bunch is ready to get back to business. Coach Jim Schlossnagle will probably start to look at his weekend starters again and the hitting coach will need to get things back dialed in during the midweek game.
Dropping the SEC series opener is not the end of the world because there is a ton of baseball left to the played, but it helps answer a few questions the college baseball world wanted to know once the Aggies played a team closer to their caliber.

“We’ve been able to, for the most part, stay healthy which is always at the forefront of my mind is keeping every player healthy,” he said.
As 1-of-2 remaining undefeated teams in college baseball entering the first SEC series of the season, the Texas A&M baseball squad is ready to go according to head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
“I think we’ve progressed well. We’ve been able to, for the most part, stay healthy which is always at the forefront of my mind is keeping every player healthy,” Schlossnagle said Thursday. “We’re missing a few guys, especially in the bullpen, the injury to (Travis) Chestnut stinks, especially for him. But we’ve also been able to play a lot of guys battling for positions that are still up for grabs and see what they can do. I feel like that has worked out well.
“Our starting pitching between (Ryan) Prager, (Tanner) Jones and (Justin) Lamkin, obviously Prager has been great and the other two guys are improving. We’re ready to go! We’ll see what that success or lack thereof leads to as we get into these big weekends.”
The No. 4 Aggies (17-0) have a three-game set in Gainesville versus No. 8 Florida (10-6).
