No. 3 Texas A&M holds on to beat SEC foe Florida in opening round of College World Series

After a four hour rain delay, the Aggies beat SEC rival Florida in the opening round of the College World Series at Charles Schwab Field.

After a four hour rain delay, the Texas A&M baseball team beat SEC rival Florida in the opening round of the College World Series at Charles Schwab Field.

The No. 3 Aggies (50-13) held on for a 3-2 victory versus the Gators (34-29) on Saturday night in Omaha, Nebraska. Texas A&M tallied 2 in the second inning and 1 in the third. Florida scored both of its runs in the seventh frame following two doubles.

In the bottom of the second, three consecutive Aggies reached to load the bases. Freshman outfielder Caden Sorell singled to center field, junior shortstop Ali Camarillo drew a walk and sophomore second baseman Kaeden Kent hit a single to right.

Senior OF Travis Chestnut hit a groundout to third base but the Gators were unable to make a play in time so each runner was safe, including Sorrell to plate the first run. Camarillo scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.

After graduate student designated hitter Hayden Schott walked in the third inning, Sorrell smashed an RBI double to center to increase the advantage to 3-0.

Sophomore OF Jace LaViolette sealed the win for Texas A&M in the top of the ninth frame. With one out and the go-ahead run at the dish, Florida sophomore 2B Cade Kurland crushed a pitch to right field where the 6-foot-6 superstar reached above the fence and robbed Kurland of the homer.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Justin Lamkin got the start on the mound in place of hurt sophomore LHP Shane Sdao, who’s out for the season. Despite being inconsistent at times this year, Lamkin was lights out in the late hours of Saturday evening. He pitched the first 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 hit with 6 strikeouts on 42 pitches.

Chris Cortez (10-3) earned the win in relief. The junior RHP allowed the first two batters to reach base and quickly got out of it. He tossed 3.0 frames and allowed 4 hits, 2 runs and 1 walk with 6 Ks on 65 pitches.

Newly minted NCBWA “Stopper of the Year,” Evan Aschenbeck, pitched the final 3.0 scoreless innings after entering in the top of the seventh for Cortez. The senior lefty gave up 3 hits and 2 walks with 4 punchouts on 51 pitches. Aschenbeck got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth frame.

Sorrell was the lone Aggie to rack up multiple hits. Chestnut, Kent, Schott and freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac respectively recorded a hit. LaViolette drew 2 walks Saturday to set a new single-season program record for free passes with 59 thus far.

Gators junior first baseman Jac Caglianone is going to be drafted very early in the the 2024 MLB Draft next month, just like injured Texas A&M junior OF Braden Montgomery. The future Top 10 pick was 2-for-3 with 1 double and 1 walk against the Aggies.

Texas A&M plays another SEC foe, No. 2 Kentucky (46-14), on Monday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

How to watch Game 1 of Texas A&M vs. Florida in the College World Series

With Justin Lamkin set to take the mound, here are the broadcast details for Texas A&M’s CWS Game 1 matchup vs. Florida

Texas A&M (49-13) has reached the College World Series for the second time in three seasons under head coach Jim Schlossnagle. The Aggies will face a feisty Florida Gators (34-28) team on Saturday night. Both programs last met during the start of SEC play in early mid-March.

In a surprising but overall strategic move, lefty Justin Lamkin will take the mound to start the series. The sophomore actually performed much better against the Gators on March 17, striking out five while allowing just two runs on the afternoon.

If Lamkin can last more than four innings, this provides Schlossnagle with plenty of depth in the bullpen. If a victory on Saturday is in their immediate future, they can start by deploying senior Chris Cortez and reliable closer Evan Aschenbach to potentially close things out and save ace pitcher Ryan Prager for Game 2 on Monday.

With several lineup changes taking effect, sophomore pitcher Shane Sdao and star outfielder Braden Montgomery will miss the rest of the postseason due to injury.

Here is the official broadcast and streaming information ahead of Saturday night’s matchup.

Texas A&M’s Game 1 starting pitcher vs. Florida in the CWS has been announced

LHP Justin Lamkin Will reportedly take the bump against Florida in Game 1 of the College World Series

Texas A&M (49-13) is set to embark on the journey of a lifetime. The Aggies will face the Florida Gators (34-28) in the first round of the College World Series on Saturday afternoon, earning a berth to the big dance for the second time in three seasons under head coach Jim Schlossnagle.

However, amid A&M’s memorable 15-9 super regional clinching victory vs. Oregon on Sunday night, sophomore starting pitcher Shane Sdao sustained a season-ending upper-body injury, joining star outfielder Braden Montgomery on the injury list, as both will miss the remainder of the postseason.

With the pitching rotation suddenly thin, Schlossnagle, who has more than earned the fan base’s trust regarding his decision-making, will reportedly go with lefty Justin Lamkin in a surprise but understandable move, as the sophomore has been up and down throughout the year.

During the year, Lamkin held a 2-2 record, recording 71 strikeouts with a 5.73 ERA.

From a strategic standpoint, Schlossnagle likely feels that if Lamkin can last four to five clean innings, bringing in junior Chris Cortez and star reliever Evan Aschenbach is the path toward victory against the Gators in Game 1. If Lamkin comes through, having ace Ryan Prager available to win the series on Monday, potentially. looks like a very savvy move.

Texas A&M vs. Florida will start on Saturday, June 15, at 6:00 p.m. CT. and air on ESPN.

Texas A&M baseball drops in newest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Texas A&M drops a couple of spots in the newest USA Today Sports Coaches Poll. No. the sky is not falling.

Texas A&M (42-10. 17-10 SEC) rebounded on Sunday afternoon to once again salvage a disappointing road series vs. Ole Miss, losing the first two games frustratingly just a week after similarly falling to LSU.

After wasting Ryan Prager’s ten-strikeout performance on Friday night, Justin Lamkin took the bump on Saturday only to give up five runs in 1.2 innings. The Rebels put up double-digit runs in a 10-2 blowout over the visitors to take the series.

However, a bright spot emerged on Sunday afternoon, as sophomore lefty Shane Sdao made his first start of the season, only to set career highs in strikeouts (7) and hits allowed (3) while earning Co-SEC Player of the Week honors in the process, leading to an impressive shutout 6-0 victory.

Even with the win, Texas A&M’s consistency issues at the plate needed to be mended before taking on the No. 2-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks to finish the regular season. Losing four out of their last seven games, the Aggies dropped two spots in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll rankings to No. 5 on Monday afternoon.

Texas A&M returns to Blue Bell Park to take on Arkansas. Game 1 is set for Thursday, May 16, and will air at 7:00 p.m. CT. on ESPN2.

No. 2 Texas A&M’s pitching lineup vs. Ole Miss has been announced

Texas A&M’s pitching rotation for the Aggies’ final regular season road test vs. Ole Miss

Texas A&M (41-8, 16-8 SEC) rebounded after losing just the second SEC series this season against LSU last weekend, run-ruling the visiting Rice Owls 16-3 to reach a perfect 25-0 in midweek games this season, a feat reached for the first time since 2015.

What plagued the Aggies against the Tigers, outside of their Game 3 blowout win on Sunday, was the collectively poor performance at the plate, especially star outfielder Braden Montgomery’s unusual hitless streak lasting four games is definitely a warning sign that depends on power at the plate to score in bunches.

However, Montgomery steadily rebounded against the Owls, collecting two hits and a home run on the night. At the same time, Jace LaViolette continued his hot-hitting streak, recording his 26th home run of the year. Looking ahead to this weekend’s road test vs. Ole Miss (25-23, 9-15 SEC), head coach Jim Schlossnagle knows that success on the mound is key to keeping the Rebels at bay. On Thursday, Schlossnagle released the starting pitching rotation for this weekend’s series:

  • Game 1 (Friday): Ryan Prager (10-2, 85 SO, 2.67 ERA)
  • Game 2 (Saturday): Justin Lamkin (8-5, 62 SO, 4.74 ERA)
  • Game 3 (Sunday): TBA

Game 1 will air on SEC Network at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while Game 2 (4:00 p.m.) and Game 3 (5:00 p.m.) will be available for streaming on SEC Network+.

Texas A&M baseball’s pitching rotation vs. LSU has been announced

Texas A&M HC Jim Schlossnagle has announced Texas A&M’s pitching rotation vs. LSU

Texas A&M (39-6, 15-6 SEC) remains undefeated in mid-week games after defeating Tarleton State 10-6 on Tuesday night. Former Michigan second baseman Ted Burton hit his fifth home run in the last four games. In contrast, Jace LaViolette hit his 23rd home run on the season.

Within the victory, the Aggies have now crossed the 100-homerun mark for only the 2nd time in program history, a testament to head coach Jim Schlossnagle and his impressive coaching staff’s work last offseason to both acquire and develop talent at the plate.

The Aggies are in second place in the SEC West standings, just a conference win below the Arkansas Razorbacks. Both programs are tied with 39 wins on the year. This weekend, the Aggies will travel to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers, who have now won two consecutive conference series while simultaneously climbing up the standings to fifth place in the West.

On Thursday, Schlossnagle released the starting pitching rotation for the series, but for a second straight weekend, the Game 3 starter is “to be determined.”

  • Game 1 (Friday): Ryan Prager (10-1, 80 SO, 2.59 ERA)
  • Game 2 (Saturday): Justin Lamkin (8-4, 59 SO, 4.47 ERA)
  • Game 3 (Sunday): TBD

Note: Jim Schlossnagle noted that Tanner Jones (9-1, 34 SO, 6.75 ERA) will likely start Game 3 if called upon.

Game 1 of No. 1-ranked Texas A&M vs. LSU will air on ESPN2/SEC Network on Friday, May 3.

No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team announces starting rotation for SEC series vs. No. 17 Georgia

Texas A&M head baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle has names the starting rotation for the series against Georgia.

After another midweek win and still holding a unanimous No. 1 ranking, Texas A&M (36-5, 13-5) will face No. 17 Georgia (30-10, 9-9) in another tough Top 25 SEC series. The Aggies are off to their best start in two decades and look to keep the momentum going as they host the Bulldogs this weekend.

For the first time this season, we have Mr. “TBA” entering the rotation after being a mainstay before the hiring of Max Wiener. This doesn’t mean Justin Lampkin won’t start game three, but Coach Jim Schlossnagle is keeping his options open depending on how the series goes through the first two games.

Here is that lineup:

Texas A&M will begin a three-game home series on Friday at 6 p.m. at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park versus No. 17 Georgia.

No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team announces starting rotation for SEC series vs. No. 12 Alabama

Texas A&M head baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle has names the starting rotation for the series against Alabama.

Fresh off run ruling Air Force and sporting a unanimous No. 1 ranking, Texas A&M (33-4, 11-4) will face No. 16 Alabama (24-13, 6-9) as college baseball’s top dog in their first SEC series. However, this is SEC baseball and Alabama will be hosting the Aggies after knocking off the former No. 1 in Arkansas last weekend.

On Wednesday, head coach Jim Schlossnagle announced the usual suspects for Texas A&M’s three starting pitchers for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The three-head monster will enter the series with a 3.18 ERA and a 12-2 record. They have a monster 157 strikeout led by Aggie comeback player of the year Ryan Prager.

Here is that lineup:

Texas A&M will begin a three-game home series on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa versus No. 12 Alabama.

No. 3 Texas A&M baseball drops Game 3 vs. No. 22 South Carolina

The Aggies dropped their fourth game of the year in Game 3 vs. South Carolina, failing to complete the sweep

No. 3 Texas A&M (28-4, 8-4 SEC) failed to complete the sweep vs. No. 22 South Carolina on the road this weekend, dropping Game 3 6-5 on Sunday afternoon and fighting until the end.

On a positive note, the Aggies earned their first SEC road series, as grad transfer Hayden Schott was yet again on another level, finishing 3-4 at the plate, including a home run and 3 RBI on the afternoon. However, starting pitcher Justin Lamkin struggled mightily, allowing five of the Gamecock’s six runs in just 3.1 innings before he was pulled.

In usual Aggie baseball fashion this season, no deficit was enough to prevent this team from coming back, as South Carolina’s 3-0 advantage in the third led to a response from Schott’s first RBI on the day, adding to more in the sixth after this two-run homer, tightening things up at 5-3.

In the seventh, after the Gamecocks added their final run of the game, Aggies’ star outfielder Jace LaViolette hits a solo homer, followed by transfer shortstop Ali Camarillo adding an RBI single, scoring Braden Montgomery.

Going into the ninth, the Aggies left multiple players in scoring position, while South Carolina’s bullpen sealed the deal with a solid final showing on the mound.

Pitching: Justin Lamkin: 31. IP, six hits, five runs, 4 Ks.

Weston Moss: 2.0 IP, one hit, zero runs, zero runs, 1 K

Hitting: Ted Burton: one run, two hits. Hayde Schott: three hits, one run, three RBI.

Texas A&M’s critical home series vs. Vanderbilt will start on Friday, April 12, but the Aggies will first take on UTSA in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m.

Texas A&M baseball’s starting pitching rotation vs. South Carolina has been announced

Here is Texas A&M’s starting pitching rotation ahead of this weekends series vs. No. 22 South Carolina

Once ahead, no. 3 Texas A&M (26-3, 6-3 SEC) rose in the polls after sweeping the Auburn Tigers last weekend, tied for the best record in college baseball with top-ranked Arkansas and 2nd-ranked Clemson.

Sporting one of the most talented rosters in the country, it’s been the play of former Stanford outfielder Braden Montgomery, who leads the country in RBI (51) and is currently second in home runs with 17 through 29 games. While the offense has been humming lately, the starting pitching has consistently done its job.

This weekend, the Aggies will face No. 22 South Carolina inside Founders Field, looking to earn a second consecutive sweep and move up in the SEC standings. On Thursday, head coach Jim Schlossnagle revealed the starting pitchers for Game 1-3 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday:

  • Game 1 — Ryan Prager: 5-0, 2.21 ERA, 51 strikeouts
  • Game 2 — Tanner Jones: 2-1, 4.87 ERA, 23 strikeouts
  • Game 3 — Justin Lamkin: 2-0, 2.41 ERA, 46 strikeouts

Game 1 vs. South Carolina will start at 6:00 p.m. CT. and will air on SEC Network+
