3 keys to a Jets victory vs. the Vikings in Week 5

3 keys to a Jets victory vs. the Vikings in Week 5

The New York Jets will hope to add a win to their record in 2024 in Week 5. The team will face the Minnesota Vikings in London on Sunday.

As usual, it will never be a walk in the park in the NFL. If the Jets (2-2) expect to beat the Vikings (4-0), there will be a few key things New York will have to focus on against Minnesota.

It will have to be a full-team effort, make no mistake. But these factors could weigh heavy on whether or not New York leave London with a win or loss.

Here are three keys to the Jets pulling out a victory against the Vikings:

Give Aaron Time

(USAT)

The Jets did not give Aaron Rodgers a chance against the Denver Broncos in last week’s 10-9 loss. The QB was was blitzed on 49 percent of his drop backs as he was sacked five times and hit 14. That offensive line has to be a lot better for him and the running back group.

Own the D-line

(Imagn)

The trenches were bad on both sides against the Broncos. After putting up 14 sacks in their first three games combined, the Jets defense failed to muster any in Week 3.

In addition, the big guys up front need to stuff the ground game too. Running back Aaron Jones is off to a good start for the Vikings this season.

Don’t get beat big

(USAT)

Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold is off to a hot start. The praise on him is well deserved. But you can’t overlook wide receiver Justin Jefferson and his big-play ability. The Jets defense won’t, but saying you need to stop him and doing so are two very different things.

Jets vs. Vikings: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 5

Jets vs. Vikings: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 5

The New York Jets will face the Minnesota Vikings in their upcoming Week 5 matchup.

Even with it being a a cross-conference clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Jets (2-2) against the Vikings (4-0) matchup:

CB Sauce Gardner vs. WR Justin Jefferson

(USAT)

This one needs little introduction.

Gardner is considered among the NFL’s best at his position. The same can be said for Jefferson.

It’s a battle of heavyweights here which will be fun to watch.

OL Olu Fashanu vs. ED Pat Jones II

The Jets offensive line, as a whole, must play better than they did last week. New York’s first-round rookie in Olu Fashanu did not play well in his first start. Pro Football Focus dropped his overall grade for the season all the way down to 45.3 after that outing, which is the third-worst of any tackle in the NFL.

Fashanu will see plenty of edge defender Pat Jones II. The Vikings defender has five sacks.

LB Jamien Sherwood vs. QB Sam Darnold

(Imagn)

As is always the case, it’s a full-defensive effort to stop an opposing quarterback. However, CJ Mosley (toe) is unlikely to play again meaning Sherwood will be in position to be the “quarterback” of the Jets defense once again. He needs to make sure that the Jets defense is in position to stop Darnold throughout the day. Mosley would have had a bit of a leg up on Sherwood, potentially. He was one of Darnold’s former teammates in New York.

The Vikings have the NFL MVP on the roster, but it isn’t who you think

While some think Sam Darnold is the early MVP favorite, one voice has another opinion.

With the Minnesota Vikings getting out to a 4-0 start in the 2024 NFL season, quarterback Sam Darnold is arguably the most talked about player right now. And it’s for good reason. The former top-five draft pick didn’t pan out with the New York Jets, and his stint with the Carolina Panthers wasn’t anything to be remembered. When he signed with the Vikings on a one-year deal, fans thought it would be short-lived with J.J. McCarthy on the roster.

But after four games, Darnold has thrown for 932 yards, 11 scores, and three interceptions. Many media members say Darnold is the early MVP favorite. But one NFL voice says the Vikings do have an MVP favorite, but it’s not Darnold.

Dan Orlovsky called Justin Jefferson the MVP during a segment on NFL Live. The way Jefferson runs routes, catches difficult passes, and everything else he can do — Orlovsky believes he is what is making the Minnesota train roll. Through four weeks, Jefferson is fifth in the NFL with receiving 358 yards.

Sam Darnold’s absurd ball placement on a tight-coverage TD to Justin Jefferson even shocked the Vikings

Sam Darnold looked like an MVP candidate on this absurd TD pass.

We’re just about a month into the 2024 NFL season, and the Minnesota Vikings look like world-beaters. That’s in no small part thanks to the resurgence of Sam Darnold, who has played like a veritable MVP candidate for what might be the best team in the NFC.

With Minnesota on the road against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4, Darnold was sublime. The journeyman quarterback was practically perfect in the first half, completing 11-of-15 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns.

Darnold was, for lack of a better word, absolutely dealing.

And we saw it best on this absurd touchdown to Justin Jefferson, where Darnold put it right on his receiver despite extremely tight coverage by Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon.

The ball placement was so ridiculous that you could even see the amazement from the Vikings’ sideline after the sequence:

You know a quarterback is firing on all cylinders if they’re throwing passes like this with the utmost confidence. The Vikings look unbeatable right now, and so does Darnold.
