Justin Herbert undergoes X-rays after suffering injury in win over Panthers

Justin Herbert said he got “rolled up.”

Quarterback Justin Herbert sustained a lower-body injury in the third quarter of the Chargers’ win over the Panthers.

Herbert took a big hit that caused a fumble. He was slow to get up and limped off the field. Trainers worked on his right foot/shin before he was taken into the medical tent. Herbert managed to finish the game.

According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, Herbert said he got “rolled up” and went for X-rays after the game. Rhim added that Herbert was limping and said he’ll know more in the next couple of days.

Herbert threw for 130 yards, his lowest total in any full game in his career. He did throw two touchdown passes and an uncharacteristic interception to Jaycee Horn.

The Chargers will stay in Charlotte, NC, before traveling to face the Steelers next Sunday.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert on schedule to face Raiders in season opener, but mobility concerns remain

Chargers QB Justin Herbert is on schedule to be ready to face the Raiders in the opener, but mobility concerns remain

Monday, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh was overjoyed to see quarterback Justin Herbert return to the practice field. Going as far as to say he heard angels sing and that he looked great with a capital G.

This puts Herbert on schedule for the season opener. He suffered a plantar fascia injury on July 31. The injury carries with it a six-week recovery. The season opener for the Chargers against the Raiders is September 8 which means Herbert would have less than six weeks to be ready.

Despite this timeline, the Chargers have said since the start that they expect Herbert to be ready for the season opener.

Herbert was wearing a walking boot for two weeks, and his return this week has him on schedule for the Chargers’ hopeful timeline. So, Harbaugh’s excitement is understandable.

The Chargers hopes lie in the hands of Herbert. They also, however, lie in the feet of Herbert, and even with his return to practice, the question of whether his mobility will be effected remains.

Previous such injuries have had quarterbacks miss large portions of seasons. Six weeks is pretty common. And you know if they could have returned — even with limited mobility — they would have.

So, it’s natural to wonder, even if Herbert takes the field as the starter when the Chargers welcome the Raiders on September 8, if he is going to be the Justin Herbert of record. A big-armed quarterback who can also escape the pocket and create plays using his legs. Or if, at very least, the playbook will be limited and the game plan will be tailored in order to keep him from having to run around as much. Not to mention it will limit his ability to create a play when one breaks down.

Jim Harbaugh expresses excitement for Justin Herbert’s return: ‘I thought I heard music, the voices of angels maybe’

Justin Herbert had a great practice on Monday.

Justin Herbert returned to the practice field after missing the past couple of weeks while nursing an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot.

Jim Harbaugh was just one of many excited that the star quarterback was back in action.

“It was great,” Harbaugh said of Herbert’s return. “I thought I heard music … the voice of angels, maybe.

“I was excited,” Harbaugh added. “I think [his teammates] were excited, too. I don’t know if they heard the angels singing like I did.”

Herbert hadn’t practiced since July 31. Fast forward to Monday, and he exchanged the walking boot for his gold practice jersey.

Herbert looked like he hadn’t lost a step. He completed 11 of 12 passes in 7-on-7 drills and engineered a prolific two-minute drill, according to team reporter Eric Smith.

“Good. Really good. Great with a capital G,” Harbaugh said on his performance in practice. “No drop off. Pinpoint accuracy. Looked really good.”

Justin Herbert is back on the practice field.

After missing time with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot, Herbert was back at The Bolt, where he was spotted throwing passes and moving around at Monday’s practice.

He was diagnosed with the injury on Aug. 1.

Herbert had been in a walking boot for two weeks, which came off on Aug. 15. The Athletic’s Daniel Popper said that Herbert was not wearing cleats but “some sort of sneakers/turf shoes.”

Jim Harbaugh said he expects Herbert to be ready to play in the Chargers’ season opener against the Raiders on Sept. 8, so seeing him practicing again is encouraging.

The Bolts close out the preseason against the Cowboys on Saturday. It remains to be seen if Herbert will get some reps. Harbaugh will likely provide an update at his next media availability.

Jim Harbaugh sounds off on Justin Herbert’s foot injury

Jim Harbaugh said he’s not qualified to say when the injury occurred but that Justin Herbert was diagnosed on Wednesday evening.

Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media following Thursday’s practice and provided a brief update on Justin Herbert’s plantar fascia injury in his right foot.

Harbaugh said he’s not qualified to say when the injury occurred but that Herbert was diagnosed on Wednesday evening.

Herbert is expected to be sidelined for two weeks. During that time, he will wear a walking boot. The team indicated that the expectation is he will be ready to play at the start of the regular season against the Raiders.

While his injury is a setback, Harbaugh clarified that they must move forward with the remainder of training camp and preseason while Herbert works his way back.

“Full steam ahead,” Harbaugh said. “The preparation, the work continues. He’s not on the field in the practice, but he’s in the meeting room, the training environment.”

In Herbert’s absence, Easton Stick will get the majority of the reps with the first-team offense. The other quarterbacks are second-year Max Duggan and undrafted free agent Casey Bauman.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert foot injury casts doubt on health for season opener vs Raiders

Chargers QB Justin Herbert foot injury casts doubt on health for season opener vs Raiders

The only team in the AFC West expected to be able to offer a challenge to the Chiefs’ division supremacy is the Los Angeles Chargers. Due in large part to new head coach Jim Harbaugh and his Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert.

Those hopes may have taken a hit today as it was revealed Herbert has suffered an injury to his plantar fascia that will have him miss the rest of camp, likely the preseason as well, with the hopes that he will be healthy by the start of the season.

As the Chargers announced, Herbert will be in a walking boot for two weeks, and slowly work his way back. The “expectation” is that he will be ready for the start of the season, but nothing is for certain.

The low end of the recovery time expected for such an injury is six weeks. If that is the case, he would be ready just in time for the season opener. If the injury lingers, he could either miss the opener or be hampered by the injury.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert suffers plantar fascia injury, expected to be ready for start of regular season

Justin Herbert suffered the injury following Wednesday’s practice.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been diagnosed with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot, the team announced on Thursday.

The injury occurred during Wednesday’s practice.

Doctors have recommended approximately two weeks in a boot followed by a graduated return to play protocol.

The team expects Herbert to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Even though Herbert is expected to be ready by Week 1 against the Raiders, missing this time is crucial because it’s lost time on getting him acclimated to the new offense.

It’s important that the team is cautious with his recovery since this injury is painful and could worsen if it’s not managed properly.

With Herbert expected to be sidelined likely for the remainder of the summer, Easton Stick will get most of the reps with the first-team offense.

We will continue to update you on Herbert’s status.

Social media reacts to Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s season-ending injury news

The general population reacted to the news that Justin Herbert will miss the rest of the season.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert would be out with a fractured right finger for the remainder of the season.

Even though Los Angeles is not trending toward making the playoffs, it’s tough to know that Herbert will miss time with an injury that was a result of poor protection, which has been an issue all season.

The Bolts will turn to Easton Stick to start at quarterback for the rest of the 2023 season.

Here is how social media reacted after it was announced that Herbert will have season-ending surgery.

Justin Herbert’s 2023 season is over.

Herbert will have surgery to repair the broken index finger on his right hand and will be placed on injured reserve, which will keep him out for the rest of the year.

Herbert suffered the injury in the Week 14 loss to the Broncos after taking a hit from defensive tackle Zach Allen.

Herbert finishes this season with 3,314 yards, a 65.1 completion percentage and 20 passing touchdowns to seven interceptions. Additionally, he had 228 yards and three scores on 52 carries.

Easton Stick will now take over as the Chargers’ starting quarterback. Stick replaced Herbert after he got hurt and went on to throw for 179 yards on 13 of 24 passing.

This will mark Stick’s first NFL career start. A fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State in the 2019 NFL draft, Stick is the winningest quarterback in FCS history with a 49-3 record.

Stick finished as the school career record holder for passing yards (8,693), passing touchdowns (88), total offense yards (11,216) and touchdowns (129). He’s also the Missouri Valley’s career leader for rushing yards (2,523) and rushing touchdowns (41) by a quarterback.

Chargers QB Easton Stick set for first NFL start vs. Raiders

Brandon Staley has full confidence in Easton Stick as the Chargers’ starting quarterback.

There is a high probability that quarterback Easton Stick will start for the Chargers on Thursday night when they face the Raiders as Justin Herbert is unlikely to play due to a finger injury he sustained against the Broncos.

It would be Stick’s first NFL start of his career. The 28-year-old has attempted just 25 passes throughout his career and all but one came on Sunday against Denver.

Despite the limited playing time, head coach Brandon Staley believes Stick has grown tremendously “in all ways as a quarterback.”

Mechanically, throwing the football with accuracy, I think that he has really developed that sense of, ‘Hey, this is what my base needs to be, this is where my shoulders need to be.’ Consistency with his stroke. I think that you saw that last night. I thought that you saw him really drive the football — throw it with touch, really drive it on some of those in-breaks. There was a tight third-down throw to Keenan [Allen] in a bunch of traffic that I thought was really good. That fourth down to Keenan on the choice [route], he really ripped that, gave him a chance. I think that he has really improved mechanically.

Stick was a fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State in 2019 and he’s worn the powder blues since then. Not only does his coach have full confidence in him, but his teammates believe they still have a fighting chance with Stick under center.

“I have nothing but full confidence in Easton Stick,” defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day said, per the team’s official website. “The looks that he gives us week-in and week-out [on the scout team] are amazing. He’s confident, he’s poised, he knows the offense like the back of his hand.

He’s honestly a great, great quarterback, and I believe he actually proved that with what the situation he was put in. A lot of quarterbacks put in that situation, they probably wouldn’t give you points.”

Stick’s best play of the game last Sunday was a 57-yard pass over the middle to Quentin Johnston. The next play Stick connected with Johnston again for a gain of 22 yards. Austin Ekeler was then able to score with a three-yard run.

Stick completed 13 of his 24 attempts for 179 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

“To have a guy that is smart and that can move, it gives you a chance,” Staley said. “As I mentioned, I think that he can learn a lot from that tape and give our team confidence going into Thursday.”

With the Chargers essentially out of playoff contention, it’s possible they could roll with Stick for the remainder of the season instead of taking the risk of Herbert getting hurt again.
