Former Vol Justin Coleman signs with the Seahawks.

Former Tennessee football cornerback Justin Coleman has signed with Seattle.

Coleman agreed to a one-year deal with the Seahawks. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This will be his second stint with Seattle. Coleman previously played for the Seahawks from 2017-18, appearing in every game during the two-year span.

He spent the 2021 campaign with Miami, playing 16 games and recording 27 tackles and two interceptions.

After playing for the Volunteers between 2011-14, Coleman signed with Minnesota.

He was released in training camp and claimed off waivers by New England, which cut him after one day.

Coleman played for the Patriots between 2015-16 before joining Seattle. He played for Detroit from 2019-20 before joining Miami in 2021.

Former Dolphins CB Justin Coleman signs with Seahawks

This is the third time that he’s been with Seattle.

The Miami Dolphins have put in a concerted effort to bring back the majority of their defensive free agents, including Emmanuel Ogbah, Elandon Roberts, Duke Riley, Sam Eguavoen, Brennan Scarlett, Sheldrick Redwine and Elijah Campbell.

However, on Wednesday, the Dolphins lost their first to another team, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that cornerback Justin Coleman is signing with the Seattle Seahawks.

Coleman, 28, signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Dolphins last season with expectations to be the team’s slot corner. However, the emergence of Nik Needham kept Coleman from fully taking that role.

The former Tenessee Volunteer still played 35% of Miami’s defensive snaps and contributed on special teams, totaling 27 tackles, three passes defended and two interceptions.

Coleman joins the Seahawks for the third time in his career.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Seahawks have agreed to terms with their former cornerback Justin Coleman to a one-year deal.

Coleman (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) previously played for Seattle in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, totaling three interceptions in 32 games. Most of his snaps came in the slot position, which has been a sore point for this defense ever since Coleman left. After his exit, he spent two seasons in Detroit, followed by one in Miami. All together, he’s played in 95 total games. Coleman will turn 29 years old in a few days.

The Seahawks also have other options for the slot in Artie Burns, Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi.

Dolphins free agent profile: What’s next for CB Justin Coleman

He may be another one-and-done in Miami.

The Miami Dolphins, along with the other 31 NFL teams, are spending their week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, as they prepare for the next steps to making their team better in the future.

After the combine, the biggest event for the league is the start of free agency on March 16 at the opening of another league year.

For the Dolphins, they have 28 players who are expected to become unrestricted, restricted or exclusive-rights free agents on that date, including cornerback Justin Coleman.

Coleman signed a one-year deal worth $2.25 million last offseason to join a deep cornerback room in Miami. Prior to this season, Coleman had spent two seasons each with the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions.

When Coleman signed with Detroit in 2019 on a pretty large four-year, $36 million deal, they were led by general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia, who were both with the cornerback in New England when he signed as an undrafted free agent.

Then, when he was cut by the Lions, he was signed by Brian Flores, who coached him in New England as well.

With Xavien Howard and Byron Jones already on the roster, Coleman was expected to fill in his normal nickel spot in 2021. He was on the field for just 35% of snaps (his lowest since 2016), recording three passes defended, two interceptions, and a team-high 63.4 passer rating against 38 targets.

Nik Needham eventually took some of his reps at his slot position, and that could be a precursor for the future.

Coleman is still just 28 years old and can be a solid piece in a secondary, but he may be looking for an opportunity where he sees the field more frequently and can receive a decent payday. That place probably won’t be Miami.

Grading the Miami Dolphins cornerbacks after their 2021 season

They were all solid, but one stood above the rest.

The Miami Dolphins are nearing the end of their coaching search, as they are down to two final candidates for the position. Now, would be as good of a time as any to evaluate the performances of the guys who were actually on the field throughout this past season.

We’ll be going through different position groups over the next week or so and reviewing how they played in 2021. After starting with the rookiesquarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and linebackers we’ll continue the defense with the guys who are charged with limiting the receivers. These are the grades for the Dolphins cornerbacks during this campaign.

Dolphins expect 5 players back from COVID list on Wednesday

The COVID list would stand at eight players.

The Miami Dolphins have had their fair share of COVID-19 issues in the last few weeks, but they got some good news on Wednesday.

During his media availability, head coach Brian Flores announced that cornerback Justin Coleman, linebacker Duker Riley, center Greg Mancz, guard Robert Jones, and tight end Cethan Carter would all return from the reserve/COVID list.

All five guys missed last week’s game against the Saints. Miami was able to make it through, but it would be nice to have as many guys available as possible.

If no one goes on the COVID list later today, the Dolphins will have eight players on the list including safety Brandon Jones, wide receiver Albert Wilson, wide receiver Preston Williams, defensive tackle John Jenkins, guard Solomon Kindley, practice squad guard Durval Queiroz Neto, wide receiver Allen Hurns (IR), and wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. (IR).

Dolphins place Justin Coleman on COVID list, make two roster moves at safety

Miami made a flurry of moves on Monday.

The Miami Dolphins thought they were finding their way out of their COVID-19 outbreak on Monday when they returned Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland from the reserve/COVID list, however, another player has landed on it.

Defensive back Justin Coleman is being placed on the team’s reserve/COVID list, as the Dolphins announced on social media. Coleman is the seventh player to be added to the list in just over a week’s time, and considering he played 63% of the snaps Sunday and has been around his team, it’s possible that there could be more joining him in the coming days.

With this news, the Dolphins also announced that they made two moves at the safety position, as they waived veteran Will Parks and signed Sheldrick Redwine from their practice squad.

Parks has been with the Dolphins for roughly a month and has only appeared in one game (Week 13 vs. the Giants) where he played just four special teams snaps.

Redwine has been back and forth from Miami’s practice squad this season. He played 20 special teams snaps against the Jets on Sunday.

Ex-Lions CB Justin Coleman will sign with the Dolphins

Ex-Lions CB Justin Coleman will sign with the Dolphins on a one-year deal

Justin Coleman didn’t spend much time on the unemployment line. The former Lions cornerback has agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year deal.

Coleman goes from being the highest-paid slot corner in the league when the Lions signed him prior to the 2019 season to making no more than $2.75 million. He was due to make $11 million in 2021 before the Lions parted ways with him earlier this month.

Coleman played two seasons in Detroit, serving as the team’s primary slot corner early before kicking outside more frequently. The decline in his performance was not coincidental. He projects to start as the Dolphins’ slot corner under head coach Brian Flores, who deploys a similar scheme and mindset to former Lions head coach Matt Patricia.

Report: Dolphins agree to terms with CB Justin Coleman

The Miami Dolphins continue to be one of the NFL’s most committed teams to a strong secondary. This was well established ahead of today’s start to the league calendar year, with Miami paying out significant amounts of money to outside cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Byron Jones alike, plus their 2020 1st-round investment into CB Noah Igbinoghene and 3rd-round investment in SAF Brandon Jones.

Add in 2019 undrafted free agent Nik Needham and a safety tandem of Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe, both of which have experience playing cornerback in the NFL, and the Dolphins are deep in the secondary to a degree that would make most NFL teams envious. And they’re not done yet, either.

A report this morning is indicating that the Dolphins have agreed to terms on a contract with nickel corner Justin Coleman, formerly of the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots, on a 1-year contract worth up to $2.75M.

For Miami, the expectation should be that this team has checked the major defensive boxes other than looking to further boost the pass rush opportunities up front and adding another linebacker capable of playing in coverage (plus depth). Yes, the team would ideally peg down a rotational defensive lineman and more linebacker depth but the Dolphins have done well to double down on their identity early on: the defense.

Their premiere assets moving forward are likely committed to the offensive side of the football — and the combinations are endless. But Coleman’s addition brings an upgrade to the nickel and allows Needham and fellow 2021 restricted free agent Jamal Perry the chance to play more special teams in 2021 as well.

Report: Lions will release CB Justin Coleman

Coleman is due an $8.95 million salary in both 2021 and 2022

It appears Justin Coleman’s time in Detroit is coming to an abrupt end. A report from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, quickly echoed by other sources, indicates the Lions will release the slot cornerback after just two seasons in Detroit.

Coleman played the first two years of a four-year, $36 million contract signed as a free agent prior to the 2019 season. The former Seahawks standout was expected to solidify the slot corner position in Detroit, but it just did not come together as expected. Coleman struggled with penalties and missed tackles, as well as speedy receivers, in 2019. Those issues were more prevalent in 2020, a season that also saw Coleman miss five games with an injury.

The Lions will save at least $4.94 million in cap room in 2021 as a result of the anticipated move. The savings goes up to $9 million if the team designates Coleman as a post-June 1st cut when he is officially released. He was due $8.95 million in base salary in both 2021 and 2022.
