Darren Till books pro boxing debut vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card

Former UFC title challenger Darren Till is diving into boxing against a former WBC champion in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

[autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] is welcoming a notable challenge for his professional boxing debut.

Till, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, will meet [autotag]Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.[/autotag] (53-6-1, 1 NC) in a six-round, 190-pound bout July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event, which is headlined by Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, streams live on Netflix.

Till announced the matchup moments after promotional spokesperson Ariel Helwani first shared the news Wednesday morning.

Till, 31, parted ways with the UFC in March 2023. The British fighter recently said he still intends on returning to the octagon but not before pursuing some boxing matches.

“I’m very happy to be a part of this event,” Till said in a statement. “Paul vs. Tyson is going to be one of the biggest events of our generation, and to make my professional boxing debut on it is brilliant. I’m very happy with my opponent.

“I’ve been a fan of his father for many years, and I’ve been a fan of Chavez Jr. too – he is a great fighter who I respect, but make no mistake about it: I am coming to knock him out in the first round. I am happy with where I am in life, and I am coming to make a statement on Saturday, July 20 in Texas.”

Former WBC middleweight champion Chavez Jr. hasn’t competed since defeating David Zegarra by unanimous decision in December 2021. Prior to that, he lost a split decision to ex-UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

“I’m excited to return to the ring after some time off, and I’m motivated and eager to reestablish myself as one of the greats,” Chavez Jr. said in a statement. “I was the first Mexican middleweight champion in the history of Mexico and want to prove that I can again become a champion. My return to the ring at this historic event is an honor.”

Below is the updated lineup for Paul vs. Tyson on Netflix:

  • Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. addresses weight miss for boxing bout vs. Anderson Silva

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. answers for weight miss ahead of Anderson Silva boxing bout in Guadalajara, Mexico.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – [autotag]Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.[/autotag] will set foot in the ring on Saturday, tailing a controversial weigh-in.

The former WBC middleweight champion failed to make weight for his boxing bout against former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Anderson Silva[/autotag] in the main event of Tribute to the Kings, which goes down at Jalisco Stadium and is set to stream live on pay-per-view.

Chavez Jr. weighed in on Friday morning at 184.4 pounds for his bout contracted at 182.

The 35-year-old addressed the weight miss at the ceremonial weigh-ins on Friday afternoon, saying there was no contracted weight.

“I don’t have any contract,” Chavez Jr. explained in his post ceremonial weigh-ins interview. “He’s fought his entire life at 84 kilos and I weighed in at 83 kilos so that was the detail. I don’t have any problem making less weight.”

Chavez Jr. said he weighed in at 182.6 pounds (83 kilos), but the promotion Borizteca Boxing confirmed to MMA Junkie he came in at 184.4 pounds. Chavez Jr. forfeited $100,000 of his purse to Silva for the weight miss.

When asked if he was taking the fight seriously given Silva is predominantly MMA fighter and not a boxer, Chavez Jr. said he’s by no means taking the Brazilian lightly.

“Of course every fight has to be taken seriously,” Chavez Jr. said. “He already boxed, he’s a strong and hard rival. The weight and size advantage is his, not mine. It’s going to be a great fight but we’re prepared to win.”

“They only say that I weighed in at 83 kilos, but they don’t say that the fight is eight rounds and everything we’ve given him in advantages being an MMA fighter. And we do it with pleasure so we can make a show for everyone.”

Silva, 46, felt disrespected by Chavez Jr. weight miss. Following the ceremonial weigh-ins, the MMA star expressed his disappointment.

“I made my weight and I’m very professional,” Silva said. “My work with my team for six months was to respect the boxing here in Mexico.

“I think different situations happen for different fighters, but when you don’t make the weight, you prove you don’t respect the people and the promoters and everybody. But this happened.”

Anderson Silva enjoying post-UFC venture into boxing: ‘I’m a free man’

Anderson Silva enjoying post-UFC venture to boxing, saying “I’m a free man.”

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Anderson Silva is having fun in the latest chapter of his storied combat sports career.

The former UFC middleweight champion and all-time MMA great gets excited at the prospect of being able to try his hand in a wide range of combat sports now that he’s no longer under contract with the UFC. Silva fought his final bout with the Las-Vegas based promotion in October, when he headlined UFC Fight Night 181 against Uriah Hall.

The bout with Hall ended a 15-year run inside the octagon spanning 24 fights. The 46-year-old is glad he finished his contract with the UFC, as he’s now able to dictate his future – something fellow MMA star Georges St-Pierre wasn’t able to do when UFC blocked him from fighting Oscar De La Hoya in boxing.

“I put in my heart and I helped put the UFC in a different level,” Silva told MMA Junkie. “Of course my era is done in the UFC, but I just finished (my contract) because when I came in the UFC I was a free man. When I come out of the UFC, I’m a free man.

“I just want to do something I love to do. And let me tell you something important, nobody can say something for you, ‘You can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ You can do everything in your life when you have passion and love. The people can’t hold you. Of course, maybe George (St-Pierre) has contract, then he has contract, but that doesn’t make sense. Dana White doesn’t need this.”

Silva is days away from accomplishing a long-time dream, which involves him jumping into the sport of boxing against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.. The two meet in the main event of the “Tribute to the Kings” event on Saturday in Mexico.

The Brazilian wanted to box Roy Jones Jr. years ago before the recent wave of MMA fighters crossing into the boxing world. Silva and Jones Jr. had publicly stated interest in putting together the bout, but the bout never materialized.

“I put (it) on the table many, many years ago that opportunity to show the world,” Silva said regarding not getting the opportunity to box Jones Jr. “I gave the opportunity for the UFC to change everything, but it didn’t happen at the moment and that’s fine. I think now everything is new and people want to see the entertainment.”

Silva has his eyes set on his boxing return this Saturday, but beyond that, “The Spider” has no idea what lies next for his career. And that’s more than fine with him.

“Everything is possible,” Silva explained.”Now I’m just trying to challenge myself. Maybe I fight on the same card my son is fighting kickboxing. Maybe fight jiu-jitsu – GI or no GI. Maybe muay-Thai. I’m very excited to go to Thailand, and train and fight in Thailand. I don’t know. Everything is possible.”
