Julian Marquez will attempt to make his long-awaited return at the third time of asking when he takes on Maki Pitolo at UFC 258.

[autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] will attempt to make his long-awaited return at the third time of asking.

Marquez (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is set to take on [autotag]Maki Pitolo[/autotag] (13-7 MMA, 1-3 UFC) at UFC 258 on Feb. 13. The event currently doesn’t have an officially confirmed location or venue.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Friday but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Marquez was initially scheduled to return on Aug. 29 against Saparbek Safarov, but the matchup was moved to UFC Fight Night 182 on Nov. 14 due to undisclosed reasons. However, the matchup was scrapped just one day before fight night, with Safarov forced to withdraw due to weight cut issues.

Marquez hasn’t competed since suffering a fully torn latissimus dorsi during his split-decision loss to Alessio Di Chirico at the TUF 27 Finale in July, 2018. The injury resulted in Marquez undergoing two separate surgeries that forced him out of action for an extended period.

A fellow graduate of “Dana White’s Contender Series,” Pitolo will look to rebound from back-to-back losses to Darren Stewart and Impa Kasanganay. Prior to that, he picked up a second-round finish of Charles Byrd at UFC 250 in June.

With the addition, the UFC 258 lineup includes:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Chris Weidman
  • Macy Barber vs. Alexa Grasso
  • Gabs Green vs. Phil Rowe
  • Julian Marquez vs. Maki Pitolo

If things get worse: 7 fighters by my side during the apocalypse

MMA Junkie’s Dan Tom breaks down the list of the seven fighters he’d want by his side during the apocalypse. Who made the cut?

With the worldwide COVID-19 epidemic in full effect, fighters and fight fans alike find themselves in the same boat as everyone else when it comes to finding their next source of entertainment and income.

Sports across the globe have pretty much come to a halt, and though MMA may be a sport that can return to business faster than others, the fact still remains that our new realities currently involve factors like social distancing and self quarantines.

Now, I don’t want to make light of the pandemic at hand or overly sensationalize the current climate, since I’m sure we’ll all come through this as better human beings. However, in case things get worse – hypothetically – I thought it would be a fun exercise to construct a fantasy team of seven fighters who you’d want by your side in the event of an all-out apocalypse.

Here’s mine, and feel free to share yours in the comments section below:

No. 7: Frank Mir

Strengths: Weaponry, looks intimidating, probably already ready for the apocalypse

Summary: I believe it was Joe Rogan who said that if [autotag]Frank Mir[/autotag] fell down a flight of stairs it would set off a firework show of gunshots. Regardless if there’s any truth to that or not, anyone who carries enough weapons on the regular that they accidentally smuggle ammunition into another country can be on my apocalypse team any day.

Former UFC heavyweight champ credentials aside, Mir – who looms large at 6-foot-3 – just looks like a guy you wouldn’t want to mess with. Add in his tactical skills and a large stockpile of guns, and that’s the person I’d want guarding my resources (assuming he lets you back in the house after your supply run).

Julian Marquez looks on bright side of social distancing as he readies for UFC return

After nearly two years away, Julian Marquez says he’ll fight anywhere from 185 to heavyweight if that’s what it takes to get him back.

Like most of us who are trying to navigate their way through the uncertain times of the coronavirus pandemic, [autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] is doing his best to find silver linings.

The UFC middleweight is almost ready for his return after an injury absence of nearly two years. And the way he sees it, all the spare time that those who are now practicing social distancing find themselves with can be put to good use by honing his chops for his long-awaited octagon return.

“It sounds really crazy – it’s terrible circumstances that’s happening to everyone. But honestly, it’s probably one of the best things to happen to me,” Marquez recently told MMA Junkie. “Because I don’t have to worry about having to go to my day job, I don’t have to worry about all this other stuff. But life has been put on hold, and I literally have been training every day, still working out. Last night, I met up with Tom Lawlor and Corey Hendricks and we, all three of us, went out to the park to do jiu-jitsu. We’re still training. The only thing we’re not doing is sparring. But this is helping focus and really put the pedal to the medal on getting my body get back into fighting shape.”

Marquez’s injury was a fully torn latissimus dorsi suffered during his split decision loss to Alessio Di Chirico at the TUF 27 Finale on July 6, 2018. That kicked off a frustrating sequence in which two separate surgeries were required.

The latter surgery was done by a Chicago-based doctor who has done work with Major League Baseball players. He explained the severity of Marquez’s injury.

“He’s done this multiple times, and when he went in, he said, ‘I’ve never seen a tendon torn to this severity,'” Marquez said. “He’s done repairs over and over and over again with baseball players, because it happens with a pitcher when you overextend your arm. But he’s never seen it ripped off the bone like mine. So it was a very rare tear, and it’s taken so long to heal get back to proper, back to where it needs to be.”

While there’s no guarantee to when the UFC’s schedule will get fully up and running again, Marquez, who is officially 1-1 in the UFC but also has a win on Dana White’s Contender Series, is ready to go. And he’s willing to fight above his weight class if that gets him back in the cage sooner rather than later.

“I’m ready to rock,” said Marquez, who has all seven of his career victories by finish. “Let’s go. I’ll take a heavyweight fight – I don’t care, all right? I’ll put your name in there. Some cards fell through? I don’t care. I’ll fight anyone at any weight – 185, 205, heavyweight. I just want to get as many reps as I can in right now. I’m 29 years old. I just lost two years – pretty much two years of my fighting career. But I extended it maybe a little bit longer. … Honestly, whoever wants it, they can have it, man. Just say my name, (I’m) signing on the line.”
