Cody Brundage vs. Julian Marquez prediction, pick, start time for UFC Fight Night 253

Cody Brundage and Julian Marquez need to get back on the winning track. Which middleweight has an edge in the UFC Vegas 103 co-feature?

[autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] and [autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] meet Saturday in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 253 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 5-0
UFC main cards, 2025: 15-10-1

Cody Brundage vs. Julian Marquez UFC Fight Night 253 preview

Brundage (10-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC) comes in looking for his first victory since December 2023, which was a first-round finish of Zach Reese. Since then, Brundage lost by submission to Bo Nickal, and recorded a no contest against Abdul Razak Alhassan to make for a frustrating 2024 campaign. … Marquez (9-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC) will be in search of his first victory since April 2021, which was a submission of Sam Alvey. Since, Marquez has dropped three straight, all by finish, to Gregory Rodrigues, Marc-Andre Barriault and Zach Reese.

Cody Brundage vs. Julian Marquez UFC Fight Night 253 expert pick, prediction

Despite my usual disdain for the UFC’s fetish with force-feeding middleweight features that nobody asked for down our throats, I actually feel bad for both Brundage and Marquez for the crap they’re getting in this spot.

Does a fight like Chepe Mariscal vs. Ricardo Ramos deserve this slot over them? Absolutely.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Brundage and Marquez (two unfairly maligned fighters, I might add) have nothing to do with this card’s format. Furthermore, this fight, for what it’s worth, should be an action-packed shit show from start to finish.

I suspect that Brundage gets off to a better start, but he could be in serious trouble if a finish fails to materialize. For that reason, I’ll biasedly pick an underrated Marquez to get back on track with a submission win in Round 2.

Cody Brundage vs. Julian Marquez UFC Fight Night 253 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are slightly favoring the older fighter, listing Marquez -122 and Allen +100 via FanDuel.

Julian Marquez: No pressure vs. Cody Brundage at UFC Fight Night 253, despite friendship

It’s been a rough few years for Julian Marquez, and Saturday, he’s in a crucial spot.

LAS VEGAS – It’s been a rough few years for [autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag], and Saturday, he’s in a crucial spot.

Marquez had a breakout year in 2021 with two bonus-winning submissions and a viral moment asking Miley Cyrus to be his valentine. But he fought just once a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024 – and lost all three by knockout.

In the UFC Fight Night 253 (ESPN+) co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday, along with the pressure of the only skid of his career – and the knowledge of what happens to many fighters who lose three in a row in the UFC, let alone four – Marquez has to fight a former training partner and someone he considers a friend.

Middleweights Cody Brundage (10-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC) and Marquez (9-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC) have worked together in the gym, and now to snap his skid and keep his job, Marquez will have to take him out.

“When we first got it, I was sitting there like, ‘We used to train together, man. What are we doing fighting?'” Marquez said Wednesday at a media day for UFC Fight Night 253. “(But) this is thev business we’re in. It has nothing to do with the friendship that we have, has nothing to do there. We both have to fight for our job.

“I don’t feel any betrayal at all like. The opportunity comes to his door, he has to make the judgment and then our manager comes to talk to us. It’s a business. He knows he owes no explanation. I understand.”

Marquez said he’s had to look at his skid in a way that keeps his mental health around that topic under control. But he also has the benefit of fighting at the UFC Apex.

And while a lot of fighters say they’d prefer an old-school arena crowd, Marquez has fought at the Apex half his fights in the UFC, starting with DWCS in 2017. Give him those Apex vibes any time.

“I get to see a lot of my friends. I grew up in this facility,” Marquez said. “I was here right when it opened up and I became friends with even the janitors, the security guards. When I come back here, I see an extended part of my family. I’m giving hugs to everybody. They all know me.”

UFC on ESPN 57 video: Zach Reese starches Julian Marquez with 20-second TKO

Zach Reese scored one of the fastest finished in middleweight history when he stopped Julian Marquez in 20 seconds at UFC on ESPN 57.

[autotag]Zach Reese[/autotag] has still never seen a second round in his MMA career after blitzing through [autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 57.

Reese (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) needed just 20 seconds to clip and drop Marquez (9-5 MMA, 3-5 UFC) with a right uppercut. He swarmed with a flurry of ground-and-pound, forcing the referee to jump in and stop the middleweight contest at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.

Check out the replay of the lightning-fast finish below (via X):

After the fight, Reese said the result wasn’t necessarily part of the game plan or expectation, but he’s thrilled with the manner in which he achieved his first UFC triumph.

“I’m trying to be a little more patient and ease into it – I kind of fight like white trash sometimes, but I am pretty skilled,” Reese said to Paul Felder in his post-fight interview. “I’m stoked to win in the UFC for the first time, and I’m ready for another one. Let’s go.”

Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 57

Julian Marquez and Zach Reese are two middleweights in a need of a win. Who gets back on track at UFC on ESPN 57 in Louisville?

[autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] and [autotag]Zach Reese[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 57 from KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese UFC on ESPN 57 preview

Marquez (9-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is hunting for his first victory since 2021, which came in the form of a submission victory over Sam Alvey, which marked back-to-back wins. He has since dropped two in a row, and will look to get back on track in his first fight of 2024. … Reese (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is in search of his first UFC win. Reese dropped his UFC debut to Cody Brundage in December after his submission victory on Dana White’s Contender Series.

Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese UFC on ESPN 57 expert pick, prediction

In what should be a fun fight for as long as it lasts, Marquez will make his return opposite Reese.

Marquez, who has been struggling to stay active since 2021, will be attempting to stop the bleeding of a two-fight losing skid this Saturday.

Reese, on the other hand, is still in search of his first official UFC win since getting signed on DWCS last year.

Despite Reese carrying some Luke Rockhold swagger about his style, I’m not sure if I’ve seen enough depth to the 30-year-old’s game to confidently side with him here.

I know Marquez has not looked great lately, but “The Cuban Missile Crisis” is a much smarter and skillful fighter than meets the eye.

I’ll pick Marquez to weather the early storm and find a submission in Round 2.

Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese UFC on ESPN 57 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are slightly favoring the more experienced fighter, listing Marquez (-148) and Reese (+116) via FanDuel.

Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese UFC on ESPN 57 start time, how to watch

Marquez and Reese are expected to make their walks to the octagon at approximately 8:35 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

UFC books Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese for June

The UFC is booking out June already as Julian Marquez and Zach Reese are aligned for a middleweight showdown.

A UFC veteran and relative newcomer both will have the same goal when they square off in June, and that’s to get back into the win column.

[autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] and [autotag]Zach Reese[/autotag] will fight in a three-round bout at a UFC Fight Night event June 8. The location for this card is not yet known.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Marquez (9-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) returns for his first action since March. He looks to snap a two-fight skid of TKO defeats against Gregory Rodrigues and Marc-Andre Barriault. Marques holds UFC wins over Sam Alvey, Maki Pitolo, and Darren Stewart.

Reese (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) impressed on Dana White’s Contender Series with a quick submission over Eli Aronov. In his promotional debut, things went the opposite way, however, as Aronov was quickly knocked out by a Cody Brundage slam.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup for June 8 includes:

  • Denise Gomes vs. Eduarda Moura
  • Julian Marquez vs. Zach Reese

UFC 285 video: Marc-Andre Barriault batters Julian Marquez with dozens of blows before stoppage

Referee Mark Smith gave Julian Marquez plenty of opportunity to fight back, but Marc-Andre Barriault proved to be too much at UFC 285.

[autotag]Marc-Andre Barriault[/autotag] turned things around Saturday at UFC 285 when he defeated [autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] in a middleweight bout on the preliminary card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The TKO stoppage came at 4:12 of Round 2 after Barriault (15-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC) landed dozens of strikes on Marquez (9-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) in an in-tight clinch. Marquez showed heart in the waning minutes, but he struggled to get off the fence.

Referee Mark Smith allowed the onslaught to occur for quite some time as Marquez intermittently showed brief flashes of offense. After the stoppage, Marquez sported a sliced, bloody, and swollen face.

With the victory, Barriault re-enters the win column after a submission loss to Anthony Hernandez in September. Marquez has now lost back-to-back fights for the first time in his professional career.

Julian Marquez: I was put on UFC 285 because ‘they want to make sure people are entertained’

Julian Marquez thinks he was put on UFC 285 for a reason: Because fans want to be entertained.

[autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] thinks he was put on UFC 285 for a reason.

Saturday’s event is headlined by Jon Jones, who takes on Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

Marquez (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will open up the televised prelims against Marc-Andre Barriault (14-6 MMA, 3-5 UFC), and promises fans they’re in for an exciting battle.

“They need entertainment,” Marquez told MMA Junkie Radio. “We have such a spectacular card on (Saturday) with Jon Jones coming back and Ciryl Gane going there – it’s a huge card and they want to make sure people are entertained, so they put Julian Marquez on that card and they want people to watch it.

“That’s why they put me on the prelims and people are going to tune in. They’re going to know that Marc and I are going to bring it, they’re going to know it’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be a bloodbath and it’s going to be ending with a highlight reel with Julian Marquez on top.”

[lawrence-related id=2620353,2620442,2620451]

Marquez’s entry to the UFC came through one of the most devastating finishes on Dana White’s Contender Series – a head kick knockout of Phil Hawes. In five octagon appearances, Marquez has earned three post-fight bonuses.

“Any time I’m in front of the fans, they always love ‘The Cuban Missile Crisis’ out there,” Marquez said. “I give everybody what they want to see. I’m always entertaining and I speak very well when it comes to mic time. People love to hate me, but they still talk about me.”
