Julian Lewis to join Colorado’s scout team for pre-Alamo Bowl practices

Coach Prime is throwing his young QB into the fire

The Colorado Buffaloes are preparing for their first bowl game in four years and are using every available body to prepare themselves for the BYU Cougars.

During this week’s episode of “Coach Prime’s Playbook,” Romi Bean of CBS Colorado asked Buffs head coach Deion Sanders about recent class of 2025 signee Julian “JuJu” Lewis, and Coach Prime said he wants to see what his young quarterback can do on Colorado’s scout team. Lewis wrapped up his Carrollton High School career earlier this week and will now join the Buffs as they prepare for the Alamo Bowl, according to Coach Prime.

Coach Prime spoke on the importance of Lewis joining Colorado’s scout team ahead of next week’s matchup with BYU:

“Tremendous. Not only that, we are going to put his butt on that scout team and let him run against the 1s (starters),” Sanders told Bean. “We’re going to see if you flinch. We’re gonna see what you got. That young man (Lewis) is phenomenal, what he’s done in high school football. The thing people forget — yeah, he’s a really good quarterback, he has all the intangibles — the kid is a winner. He’s won all his life. That’s what we love about him.”

Coach Prime compares recent Colorado signee Julian Lewis to Shedeur Sanders

Deion Sanders sees a lot of similarities between Julian Lewis and Shedeur Sanders

College football head coaches are often creatures of habit. When they see something that works for them, they want to replicate it. That helps explain why Colorado head coach Deion Sanders targeted recent signee Julian “JuJu” Lewis to replace Shedeur Sanders at quarterback.

Shedeur has propelled CU’s rebuild forward, rewriting the record books in two seasons with the Buffs. Now, Coach Prime has landed his next quarterback in Lewis, whose pinpoint accuracy has shades of Shedeur’s.

While meeting with the media on Tuesday, Coach Prime gave his thoughts on Lewis and the talent he brings to Boulder:

“Smart coaches at this level understand what has worked for them and they try their best to replicate that. I saw a lot of similarities between the way Julian’s life has been structured and Shedeur’s,” Coach Prime said. “Some of the similarities are unbelievable. That kid right there is everything that we desire in a quarterback. He’s smart, he can make every throw but most of all, he’s a winner.”

Julian ‘JuJu’ Lewis officially signs with the Colorado Buffaloes

JuJu Lewis has made things official with the Buffs

The Colorado football program made history during the first day of the early signing period as class of 2025 quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis put pen to paper. While his rating varies from four to five stars depending on the recruiting outlet, Lewis is the highest-rated QB to ever sign with the Buffs.

According to Rivals, Lewis is also the highest-rated high school signee in Colorado history. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound QB was originally committed to the USC Trojans before head coach Deion Sanders and his staff flipped his pledge last month.

Here’s what Lewis had to say about Colorado (h/t On3):

“What Coach Prime has been able to build in two seasons can’t be denied,” Lewis told On3 in a statement. “I’ve had a chance to get to know him and believe that he can further develop me into the player and person that I want to be. Coach (Pat) Shurmur has been an NFL offensive coordinator and head coach, so he understands exactly what’s needed at the next level. Coach Prime is going to play the best player, whether it’s a freshman or a walk-on.”

Julian Lewis chooses Colorado after decommitting from USC

USC and Colorado are no longer in the same conference, but the two programs will be compared for the next several years because of their quarterbacks.

The Julian Lewis story has finally run its course, at least for now. Lewis, the five-star prospect who recently decommitted from USC, chose Colorado over Indiana and Georgia. He did so on the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, as College Sports Wire noted:

The decision was largely unsurprising. Lewis had taken multiple visits to Colorado recently as well as a trip to Indiana. After he decommitted from the Trojans, he received several projections to flip to the Buffaloes.

The Carrolton, Georgia, prospect ranks as the No. 35 player nationally and No. 6 quarterback in the 2025 cycle. He was previously a five-star prospect but now sits just outside of that group, and in the quarterback rankings, he’s one spot behind Husan Longstreet, who flipped from Texas A&M to USC the same day Lewis decommitted from the Trojans.

USC was able to rebound from Lewis’s decommitment with the Longstreet flip, as College Sports Wire pointed out. Let the Lewis-versus-Longstreet comparisons begin in Boulder and Los Angeles.

Why Colorado fans should be ecstatic about landing Julian Lewis

Julian Lewis is a massive get for Coach Prime and the surging CU Buffs

On Thursday, the Colorado Buffaloes made their big splash of the 2025 recruiting class by landing highly-ranked quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis’ commitment. And while CU football fans came together over the summer to land the five-star prospect through a personalized burger from “The Sink” restaurant and the “#WeWantJuJu” movement, the Boulder faithful did so for good reason.

Lewis, a native of Carrollton, Georgia, displays traits similar to current Colorado starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders, especially in how he orchestrates the offense. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, the Carrollton High School senior doesn’t jump off the page for his physical traits, but his poise and accuracy certainly do. The former USC Trojans commit displays refined footwork and can attack opposing coverages well for his age.

At the high school level, “JuJu” was a finalist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year award in 2023 with 48 touchdowns to just two interceptions as a sophomore before reclassifying to become a 2025 prospect. He garnered comparisons to current NFL quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields and received offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and several other Power Four programs.

Lewis appears to be in “perfect timing” with Sanders’ plans to enter the NFL draft, fitting as a near-perfect candidate for Colorado to pass the baton at the quarterback position.

With Lewis officially on board, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders now owns 11 class of 2025 commits.

5-star QB Julian Lewis makes commitment

Five-star quarterback recruit Julian Lewis decides among Georgia, Colorado and Indiana

Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis has committed to the Colorado Buffaloes over the Indiana Hoosiers and Georgia Bulldogs. Lewis, who was previously a USC Trojans commitment, is one of the most talented passers in the class of 2025.

Lewis elected to decommit from USC shortly after visiting the Georgia Bulldogs for the Tennessee game.

Lewis plays football for Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia. Lewis is the No. 5 quarterback and the No. 31 recruit in the country, per the 247Sports composite. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback is the sixth-ranked recruit in Georgia.

Lewis’ commitment is a massive addition for Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, who now has a quarterback plan for the 2025 season with Shedeur Sanders expected to enter the 2025 NFL draft.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has been aggressively pursuing a quarterback recruit in recent weeks with Georgia examining its future quarterback plan. Senior Carson Beck is expected to enter the 2025 NFL draft.

Julian Lewis and JT Daniels create a fascinating collection of parallels and contrasts

The paths carved out by JT Daniels and Julian Lewis have obvious USC parallels, but also many differences and unresolved endpoints. There’s a lot to think about here.

USC football fans know the journey JT Daniels made in the college football world. He went to USC, got hurt, transferred to multiple other places, decided to try out coaching, and is thinking about what he ultimately wants to do. Julian Lewis wants to play football, but like Daniels, a path which seemed to start at USC is going in other directions. It’s a really interesting combination of obvious parallels and equally obvious contrasts. Crissy Froyd of Draft Wire dives into some of those nuances in this thought-provoking piece:

While Lewis hasn’t entered a portal of any sort — that only exists in college — he has shown he’s open to options and changing commitments. That’s something Daniels was no stranger to, becoming the first four-conference starter in college football history between USC, Georgia, West Virginia and Rice.

But the parallels do not stop there.

Curiously enough, Daniels has ended up in the city of Carrollton himself, the same place Lewis’ rise began. But for Daniels, the town has presented a  much different pathway.

Daniels has put his playing days behind him, retiring from football due to concussion issues in December of 2023 after spending a single season with the Rice Owls. He now works as an offensive analyst at the University of West Georgia with a heavy emphasis on working with the quarterbacks.

It is notable how the paths of Julian Lewis and JT Daniels do — and don’t, and could still — intersect. Past, present, and future create a strange and uncertain landscape in which two young men face a universe of choices and have only just begun to write their life stories.

5-star QB decommits from USC after visiting Georgia

Georgia football is looking for its quarterback of the future? Could UGA land a recent USC decommitment?

Five-star quarterback recruit Julian Lewis decommitted from the USC Trojans. Lewis elected to decommit from USC shortly after visiting the Georgia Bulldogs for the Tennessee game.

USC quickly found another elite quarterback commitment: five-star Husan Longstreet, who had been committed to Texas A&M.

Lewis is a member of the class of 2025 and plays football for Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia. Lewis is the No. 5 quarterback and the No. 31 recruit in the country, per the 247Sports composite. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback is the sixth-ranked recruit in Georgia.

Lewis is projected to commit to the Colorado Buffaloes according to 247Sports. Georgia and Indiana are also in the mix for Lewis.

Georgia is also targeting a four-star California quarterback commit and a four-star Mississippi State quarterback commit. The Bulldogs are looking for a replacement at quarterback for Carson Beck, who is projected to enter the 2025 NFL draft.

In 2023, Julian Lewis passed for 3,094 passing yards, 48 touchdowns and two interceptions. Lewis was named as the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year for his efforts in 2023, leading Carrollton to an 11-2 season and 7A quarterfinals appearance.

Lewis caught the eyes of college football recruiters with his amazing freshman season at Carrollton. Lewis helped Carrollton reach the 7A state final and set a state final record with 531 passing yards in a loss.

How Julian Lewis could be pulling a reverse JT Daniels of sorts

Julian Lewis is one of the hottest topics in college football following his de-commitment from USC.

Julian Lewis is one of the hottest topics in college football following his de-commitment from USC.

The Carrollton Trojans quarterback, currently the No. 2 quarterback in the nation for the Class of 2025, made the decision just one day after he took a visit to Georgia during the Bulldogs’ 31-17 win over the Tennessee Volunteers.

While other names like Colorado are in the mix for where Lewis could be committing to next, Georgia seems to be a likely landing spot, just about two hours away from where he plays high school football in Carrollton, Georgia.

Lewis has a number of accomplishments under his belt, including being named the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year in 2023. He was also a finalist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year.

That is a title that another former USC commitment with Georgia ties achieved back in 2018, when Mater Dei quarterback JT Daniels was named Gatorade National Player of the Year.

For now, it does not appear Lewis will be going through with his original commitment to USC as Daniels did, but he could be suiting up for the same team Daniels did after he left USC in a different manner, transferring after injury issues there.

And while Lewis hasn’t entered a portal of any sort — that only exists in college — he has shown he’s open to options and changing commitments.

Daniels seems to be unsure about continuing down the coaching path for the remainder of his career, recently saying he had considered pursuing his Ph.D. at potentially Mercer or the University of Georgia next year. The former quarterback currently holds a degree in psychology.

It will be interesting to see how the future shakes out for both players, who could have an uncannily similar journey almost in reverse with the ability both end up at UGA at the same time after sharing the same city already.

And, like Daniels once was considered to possibly be, Lewis will head into the college scene as a player with the potential to be a future first-round NFL Draft pick.

Colorado target Julian ‘JuJu’ Lewis decommits from USC Trojans

BREAKING: Colorado target Julian Lewis has decommitted from USC

ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel reported Sunday that five-star quarterback and Colorado recruiting target Julian “JuJu” Lewis is no longer committed to the USC Trojans.

Lewis had been committed to USC since August 2023, but the Buffs, Indiana Hoosiers, Georgia Bulldogs and others have since made major pushes to land the fifth-ranked class of 2025 QB (per the 247 composite).

Despite Lewis visiting Georgia this weekend, Colorado is considered the favorite to land his commitment. Three 247Sports recruiting experts, including BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger, and multiple On3 analysts have logged recent predictions for Lewis to land at CU.

If Lewis does commit to Colorado, he would become the favorite to replace starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders next season.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and his staff are also recruiting class of 2026 Oklahoma Sooners quarterback commit Jaden O’Neal, who visited Boulder this weekend.
