Identifying Texas’ biggest portal needs for 2024

Texas will need to add starters through the transfer portal to be this good next season.

The Texas Longhorns (12-1) have perhaps the most complete roster in college football. It’s for that reason the team was able to dominate Alabama in Tuscaloosa and make it to the College Football Playoff. To duplicate this season’s results, the team will need to add starter talent in the transfer portal.

The Longhorns don’t lack elite rising stars. The 2023 freshman class is stacked with talent. Linebacker Anthony Hill, cornerback Malik Muhammad and safety Derek Williams are already hits for Texas at their given positions.

We feel strongly about the potential of wide receiver Johntay Cook, running back Cedric Baxter Jr. and quarterback Arch Manning. Several other young players like running back Jaydon Blue appear poised for breakout seasons in 2024.

That said, a handful of positions pose big shoes to fill. Let’s look at a few areas in which Texas will need to get outside help to match production from 2023 key starters.

Tennessee ’emerging’ as a school for South Carolina wide receiver Juice Wells

Tennessee is emerging as a school for South Carolina transfer wide receiver Juice Wells.

South Carolina senior wide receiver Juice Wells entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday.

Tennessee and Texas have emerged as two transfer schools for Wells, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

“Tennessee and Texas are emerging as schools to watch in the recruitment of South Carolina transfer Juice Wells, multiple sources tell On3 Sports,” Nakos announced.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Wells transferred to South Carolina from James Madison ahead of the 2022 season. He appeared in 38 games, including 27 starts, recording 187 receptions for 2,818 yards and 28 touchdowns with both schools.

South Carolina’s Juice Wells out Saturday against Miss. St, won’t miss season

The 2022 first-team All-SEC wideout’s foot injury won’t keep him from the rest of the 2023 season, head coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday.

[autotag]South Carolina Gamecocks[/autotag] wide receiver Juice Wells won’t be available this weekend against Mississippi State with a left foot injury, head coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday.

Beamer did say the wideout should return at some point this season after a meeting with a specialist Tuesday morning. Beamer did not specify the nature of the injury any further than Wells’ foot.

The senior caught two passes for 32 yards against Georgia, including the first touchdown of the game, before he left in the first quarter.

Wells caught 68 passes for 928 yards and six touchdowns a season ago, leading the Gamecocks in all three categories on his way to first-team All-SEC selection.

According to the 2-deep depth chart that was released ahead of the Mississippi State game, true freshman Nyck Harbor is listed as his primary backup. Harbor has caught one pass this year for seven yards. That play resulted in a touchdown.
