2023 NFL draft: 4 interior offensive linemen for Chargers to watch at combine

Here are a few interior offensive linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine that the Los Angeles Chargers could target in the draft.

The on-field portion of the NFL Combine is underway, marking the start of the testing circuit that propels some prospects into the stratosphere while ruining the stock of others.

On the interior of the offensive line, the focus is depth. Matt Feiler is a likely cap casualty, pushing Jamaree Salyer into the left guard spot. That leaves Brenden Jaimes as the only backup under contract as of this week.

So, while not a premium position of need after spending big over the past few seasons, expect a pick or two in the later rounds.

The 2023 scouting combine All-Name Team

Stetson Bennett, Juice Scruggs, Sidy Sow, DeMarvion Overshown, and Habakkuk Baldonado are all part of the 2023 scouting combine All-Name Team.

What’s in a name? Well, some people live up to their names, and others perhaps don’t. In football, you can look at tape of Bronko Nagurski or Mack Strong running the ball, and think that those two men could not have been named anything else. Then, there’s Richie Incognito, who was anything but in his NFL career.

The participating prospects at the 2023 scouting combine aren’t really here to make any sort of All-Name Team; they have bigger and better goals on their minds. But when we see Stetson Bennett, Juice Scruggs, Sidy Sow, DeMarvion Overshown, or Habakkuk Baldonado, we think it’s fun that these young men are about to join an all-time pro football fraternity that includes Fair Hooker, Buzz Nutter, Mac Speedie, Atari Bigby, and Bacarri Rambo.

So, here’s Touchdown Wire’s All-Name Team for the 2023 scouting combine.

2023 NFL Combine Profile: Juice Scruggs, Offensive Line

Penn State may be bringing back one of its top offensive linemen in 2023 with the return of Olu Fashanu, but the offensive line will be losing a veteran starter with plenty of experience with the departure of [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag]. Scruggs has opted to take his shot at the NFL and will be heading to the NFL combine with a lot to prove to the NFL Scouting community.

Scruggs is a prospect in need of a good showing at the combine in order to climb the big board a bit ahead of the NFL draft. But with his proven versatility at multiple offensive line positions and good all-around skills, there could be much to like about Scruggs as a draft prospect. But he may have to shine a bit at the combine in order to improve his draft projections.

Here is a look at Penn State offensive lineman Juice Scruggs as he prepares to show what he has to offer at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Seven Penn State players invited to NFL Scouting Combine

Here are the Penn State players heading to the NFL scouting combine.

Seven Penn State players have been invited to the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. One noticeable omission from the Nittany Lions seeking to be drafted in April is a familiar face to Penn State fans.

[autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag], who is coming off being named the offensive MVP of the Rose Bowl, was not among the 15 quarterbacks invited to the event in Indianapolis. Despite impressing Jeff Fisher during the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl practices, the NFL seemingly is unimpressed thus no invite.

Ironically, former Penn State quarterback [autotag]Will Levis[/autotag], who will be a top-ten pick in the draft after two years at Kentucky, is on the list. Levis was unable to beat out Clifford for the starting job which resulted in him transferring. Another Penn State transfer, Justin Shorter, was also invited to the NFL Scouting Combine after finishing his career at Florida.

Penn State’s seven invitees are receivers [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Brenton Strange[/autotag], defensive backs[autotag] Joey Porter Jr. [/autotag]and [autotag]Ji’Ayir Brown[/autotag], defensive lineman [autotag]PJ Mustipher [/autotag]and center [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag].

Porter and Strange declared early for the draft and Porter is expected to be a first-round pick. If selected in the first round, Porter Jr. would make it back-to-back years for the Nittany Lions with first-round talent being drafted. He would also become the first Penn State defensive back ever selected in the first round of the draft if that happens.

A total of 319 players received NFL Scouting Combine invites with the combine starting on February 28th. On-the-field testing as well as player interviews with teams will make up the event.

Ji’Ayir Brown not listed on Senior Bowl or Shrine Bowl rosters

Despite accepting invites previously, Ji’Ayir Brown is missing from the rosters for the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl.

Practices for the annual East-West Shrine Game will begin this weekend, and Penn State is set to be well represented at the college football all-star game. But one player who previously accepted an invitation is nowhere to be found on the game’s updated roster online.

Penn State safety [autotag]Ji’Ayir Brown[/autotag] accepted an invite to play in the Shrine Bowl in December, but his name is noticeably absent from the game’s online rosters for the East and West teams.

Brown not being at the Shrine Bowl could mean he may be a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster, with the Senior Bowl scheduled for next week as well. Brown had previously accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl before he accepted the invite to play in the Shrine Bowl, but he is also missing from the Senior Bowl roster listed online.

Brown is coming off a stellar senior season with Penn State, capping off his career being named the defensive MVP of the Rose Bowl in Penn State’s victory over Utah. Brown contemplated leaving for the NFL last year but decided to return for one more season to potentially improve his draft stock for the 2023 NFL draft.

Penn State will have three players in the Shrine Bowl. The Nittany Lions will be represented by defensive tackle [autotag]PJ Mustipher[/autotag], offensive lineman [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag], and long snapper [autotag]Chris Stoll[/autotag].

The East-West Shrine Bowl will be played on Thursday, February 2 in Las Vegas. The Senior Bowl will be played on Saturday, February 4 in Mobile, Alabama.

Juice Scruggs declares for 2023 NFL draft

Penn State OL Juice Scruggs declares for draft, confirms status for Rose Bowl

Penn State’s outlook on the offensive line in 2023 was given a boost when [autotag]Olu Fashanu[/autotag] announced he will be returning for another year. But heading into the holiday weekend, another member of Penn State’s offensive line has announced he will be turning pro after the Rose Bowl. [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag] announced in a statement on his Twitter account he is declaring for the NFL draft next spring.

“Penn State, thank you for accepting me as a young 18-year old kid with open arms,” Scruggs said in his released statement. “We have stuck as a family through the ups and downs, and I am forever grateful to be a Nittany Lion.”

Scruggs went on to make the official announcement about his plans for the bowl season and the draft.

“With that being said, I will be declaring for the 2023 NFL draft,” Scruggs announced. “I will also finish what we started and play in the Rose Bowl.”

Having Scruggs available for the Rose Bowl will be a nice boost for the Penn State offense, as will the return of Fashanu. His departure, however, will potentially pave the path for some early playing time on the line for one of Penn State’s newest additions in the Class of 2023 that was signed earlier in the week.

Penn State will be without a couple of key players for the Rose Bowl who are also preparing for their NFL future. [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] previously announced he was opting out of the bowl season before Penn State was officially locked into the Rose Bowl. Wide receiver [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag], who suffered a season-ending injury late in the year, will also miss the bowl season as he focuses on the draft.

Penn State will face Pac-12 champion Utah in the Rose Bowl on January 2, 2023.

James Franklin announces captains for 2022 season

Get to know Penn State’s team captains for the 2022 season.

Penn State football head coach James Franklin announced captains on Thursday. Some names are going to be familiar, others will be new to the leadership role. All in all, both sides of the ball are well represented.

On the offensive side of things are quarterback Sean Clifford, senior, offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, and long snapper Chris Stoll.

On defense there is safety Ji’Ayir Brown, defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, and  linebacker Jonathan Sutherland. All of them apart from being captains are also expected to have key roles on the field apart from off it.

As for Clifford and Sutherland, by being named captain they become the first four-time team captains in the programs history. Mustipher may not be a four-time captain but he returns as captain after last year being named one.

Get to know the captains a little better.

2022 Penn State football: Nittany Lions’ offensive line preview

Here’s a look at the offensive line depth for Penn State heading into the 2022 season.

Penn State has lost a couple of more veteran players on the offensive line leaving them with a more young and promising group. With just three seniors listed on the roster, a lot of young talent is going to be asked to grow up very quickly.

[autotag]Olumuyiwa Fashanu,[/autotag] who will be protecting the blindside of [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag], has a chance to become a keystone on this offensive line. The Maryland native has the size and speed at the tackle spot to really turn into something special this coming season.

Outside of Fashanu, there are a bunch of guys looking to earn their keep. Getting to know the vast depth of names on that young line may seem daunting but this list should help sort things out. A lot of these faces are going to be ones fans will see for the next two to three years.

Nittany Lions Wire Roundtable: Who will be Penn State’s breakout player in 2022?

Our staff at Nittany Lions Wire shares our pick for Penn State’s breakout player in 2022 that may be flying under the radar.

As we begin to move closer to the start of a new college football season in Happy Valley, the staff at Nittnay Lions Wire is spending some time sounding off on some big questions facing the Nittany Lions this fall. Today’s focus is on potential breakout players for the Nittany Lions in 2022.

Penn State appears to have some good talent across the roster in 2022, and we have profiled a number of players expected to be key contributors to the program this fall. But who is a player you feel is flying under the radar and could emerge as a key breakout player for the Nittany Lions in 2022?

Sam Dehring, Contributor
@sam_dehring68

Penn State has quite the intriguing offense. They brought in guys like [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Singelton[/autotag]. They even brought in two transfers with Cornell offensive tackle [autotag]Hunter Nourzad[/autotag] and Western Kentucky wide receiver [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag]. It’s hard to call Tinsley a sleeper when many analysts already have him mocked in the first three rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Speaking of sleepers, I’m heading over on the defensive side of the ball for defensive tackle [autotag]Coziah Izzard[/autotag]. When it comes to the defensive line, many will think of [autotag]PJ Mustipher[/autotag], and rightfully so. Mustipher going down with an injury last season resulted in several new faces getting some more playing time on the field. In his first season, Izzard didn’t see much production. But in 2021, he finished with 21 total tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. I think Izzard has a strong chance to break out for the Nittany Lions this season.

Izzard saw the majority of his 2021 production against Rutgers, where he finished with four total tackles and a sack. He is currently slated to start up front. Those stats mentioned are a solid stepping stone to potentially have a breakout season for the Nittany Lions in 2022.

Mustipher developed into a leader for Penn State, and Izzard, now being one of the upperclassmen, has a good chance to do that as well.

Two other names I wanted to throw out there are wide receiver [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag], both now going into their second years under offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag].

There are a few new faces on the roster that I anticipate will have some big seasons for the Nittany Lions, but it would be unfair to suggest wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley or freshman running back Nick Singleton are flying under the radar. So I’m also going to go on the defensive side of the football and point to linebacker Kobe King.

While Kalen King is already primed and ready for a solid sophomore season in the backfield, his twin brother Kobe could emerge as a fixture in the middle of the Penn State defense. Kobe King may not start the year as a starter but I do anticipate he will be a consistent contributor when on the field. And with that will come a growth that will lead to him being cemented in the middle of the defense moving forward.

What struck me was this spring when King noted that picking up and adjusting to the new defensive style of new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was easy to pick up and run with, compared to the style of former defensive cooridnator Brent Pry. It may be a mix of a system being easier to grasp and a player having a year of college football experience already under his belt, but that stood out to me in the spring and I hope that it translates to success on the field this fall.

@MandrewNFL

Theo Johnson who comes into the year being underutilized so far in his Penn State career is someone I think could make a giant leap this year. He and Brenton Strange are both on the John Mackey Watchlist but Johnson is who intrigues me. His blend of speed and size could make him one of the best tight ends in the country if they utilize him in such a way. With this being Clifford’s last season I think they go all out and gameplan every weapon they can around him.

As we continue our series of player galleries for Penn State, the next one is offensive tackle [autotag]Juice Scruggs[/autotag].

This was mentioned before, but the recognition is there for Scruggs. He just needs to prove he is capable of being a productive starter on Penn State’s offensive line, which he is.
