Texans coach DeMeco Ryans counting on experience to fix OL

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is expecting the combination of experience and reps to solidify the offensive line.

No matter a team’s strength, attrition and availability issues can decimate a position group.

Such is life for the Houston Texans, who had a solid five-man front along the offensive line early in training camp. However, a torn ACL and MCL for starting center Scott Quessenberry, a season-ending shoulder injury for Kenyon Green, right tackle Tytus Howard fracturing his hand, and promising rookie center Juice Scruggs starting out on injured reserve has compromised Houston.

The reality is the Texans have a hardship to work through entering Week 1.

The Texans have addressed the problem the best they can with the additions of Kendrick Green and Josh Jones. Houston coach DeMeco Ryans is hopeful the veterans will be able to use their experience to form cohesion throughout the upcoming game weeks.

“When it comes to the offensive line and having guys who have played, at the end of the day, everyone has to do their job,” Ryans said. “Guys are dialed in with meeting time, with preparation – all guys have to do is do their job and do it as well as they can do it and that’s all we can ask for. Over time, they’ll continue to gel together and come together as one. All we need guys to do is to go out and be a professional and do what they need to do to get their job done.”

The offensive line will have to be a quick study throughout the room as Houston kicks off their season Sept. 10 against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Texans trades with Cardinals for OT Josh Jones

The Houston Texans addressed their offensive tackle depth by trading for the Arizona Cardinals’ Josh Jones.

The Houston Texans continue to address their tackle depth.

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Texans have traded with the Arizona Cardinals for tackle Josh Jones and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV reports the Texans are trading a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Cardinals.

Jones, 26, has started 21 of 47 games for the Cardinals since joining the team as a 2020 third-rounder from Houston. The Fort Bend George Bush alumnus has versatility as both a tackle and a guard, which gives Jones a premium as the Texans work through the injuries at tackle that notably include Tytus Howard’s fractured left hand and Charlie Heck stuck on the physically unable to perform list.

Cardinals trade away another starter for a Day 3 pick swap

Jones was Arizona’s highest-graded offensive player in 2022, now traded to Houston for a Day 3 pick swap

The Arizona Cardinals continue to be busy reshaping their roster in a way that might mystify both their fans and pundits around the league. Hours after trading away 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants, the Cardinals have traded a third-round selection from that same draft.

This time, it’s offensive tackle Josh Jones, who is headed to his hometown Houston Texans. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Cardinals are sending Jones and a seventh-round pick to Houston in exchange for a fifth-round pick. The year of the draft selections is not yet specified.

Jones started nine games at left tackle for the Cardinals in 2022 after playing in all 17 games, including 12 starts, between right guard and right tackle in 2021 in Arizona. In 2022, Jones earned a PFF score of 75.8 — the highest grade of any Cardinals offensive player.

Cardinals trade OT Josh Jones to Texans

The re-signing of Kelvin Beachum and drafting of Paris Johnson signaled the end of Jones’ time with the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals are wheeling and dealing. After trading safety Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants, they have agreed to a deal sending tackle Josh Jones to the Houston Texans, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Cardinals get Houston’s fifth-round pick in exchange for Jones and a seventh-round pick.

Jones was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round in 2020.

Since being drafted, he has played in 47 games. He started 21 over the last two seasons at right tackle, right guard and left tackle.

He was left without a sure spot on the roster.

The Cardinals re-signed Kelvin Beachum to a two-year deal and drafted Paris Johnson sixth overall this year.

There was talk of possibly playing left guard but the Cardinals added veterans Elijah Wilkinson and Dennis Daley in free agency.

Jones is due more than $2.71 million in the final year of his rookie contract, having earned a performance salary escalator.

The move saves the Cardinals $2.71 million in salary cap space with the trade.

OL Josh Jones gets nearly $1.5M raise from salary escalator

Jones played in 46.7% of the Cardinals’ offensive snaps over his first three seasons, escalating his salary from $1.27M to more than $2.73M.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Josh Jones gets a raise of nearly $1.5 million in 2023.

Why?

He qualified for the league’s proven performance escalator, according to Over the Cap.

He was scheduled to make $1.27 million per his rookie contract. He will now make more than $2.73 million, which equals the amount of the low tender for restricted free agents.

There are three tiers players can hit based on playing time and performance.

Jones hit Level 1. To reach Level 1, a second-round pick must play in at least 60% of his team’s offensive or defensive snaps through his first three seasons.

For players drafted in Round 3-7, they must hit 35% of their teams snaps.

Jones played in 10.5% of the Cardinals’ offensive snaps in 2020, 72.7% in 2021 and 57.0% in 2022 for a total of 46.7%.

Jones’ cap hit in 2023 with his new salary will now be $3.01 million.

He will be in a battle for a spot on the roster in training camp this year, which might make him a trade candidate with the re-signing of Kelvin Beachum, the drafting of Paris Johnson and offseason additions of Dannis Daley and Elijah Wilkinson.

5 safeties the Colts can replace Daniel Scott with

Here are a few options the Colts could consider in order to replace Daniel Scott.

The Indianapolis Colts revealed some unfortunate news Wednesday, placing rookie safety Daniel Scott on the injured reserve list after he suffered a torn ACL on the final play of OTAs last week.

A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft out of California, Scott was expected to contribute significantly on special teams while providing depth as a versatile player in the safety room.

Because Scott was placed on the injured reserve list before the 53-man roster has been finalized, he will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

Here are five safeties the Colts can replace Scott with going into training camp next month:

Josh Jones’ spot on Cardinals’ roster a bit tenuous after offseason moves

There are roadblocks to Jones starting at tackle, at guard or even being a backup with the addition of several linemen in the offseason.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Josh Jones enters his fourth NFL season and final season of his rookie contract in a tough situation. He wasn’t drafted by the Cardinals’ current general manager and was not previously coached by the team’s new staff.

And with a number of offseason moves in the offseason, his spot on the roster appears somewhat tenuous.

Why?

While he played well at left tackle last year when he filled in for D.J. Humphries, Humphries is still the starting left tackle.

They re-signed Kelvin Beachum on a two-year deal.

They drafted Paris Johnson sixth overall.

Jones has almost no way to crack the starting lineup as a tackle.

If Johnson ends up the starting right tackle, Beachum would end up the swing tackle, able to play both sides. His salary is fully guaranteed.

Jones could potentially be in the mix at left guard, but if Beachum starts at right tackle, Johnson likely will start at left guard.

That might be the best scenario for Jones, who could then be the backup swing tackle again.

However, Johnson starting at right tackle makes Jones’ situation difficult, even at guard.

The Cardinals signed two veteran linemen able to play tackle or guard in Dennis Daley and Elijah Wilkinson.

They are primarily guards and both have starting experience.

Daley signed a two-year contract and has $400,00 of his salary fully guaranteed.

Wilkinson signed a one-year deal but $940,000 of his salary is fully guaranteed.

With the guaranteed salaries, it will make the team think extra hard whether to cut them if the competition is close.

There are roadblocks to Jones starting anywhere. There are obstacles to him being a backup.

It likely means he is a possible trade candidate because young tackles are valuable.

But with a new front office and coaching staff, Jones is the sort of player who often is replaced. Don’t be surprised if he gets dealt later on in the offseason or is ultimately cut at the end of training camp.
