Surprising presumed starters for Cardinals entering regular season

These four players, expected to start, were not on anyone’s radar when the offseason began.

The Arizona Cardinals have cut their roster down and are now on the path of preparing for their season opener on the road against the Washington Commanders.

While head coach Jonathan Gannon refuses to name starters yet, the preseason depth chart and the playing rotation in the preseason give us an idea of what the starting lineup will look like.

There are a handful of surprises, based on expectations entering the offseason. Four projected starters were not expected to be starters when the offseason began.

Zach Ertz: Integration of QB Josh Dobbs has been ‘seamless’

Ertz likes Dobbs’ intelligence, his presence in the huddle and the catchable ball he throws.

The Arizona Cardinals pivoted just before roster cutdown with their plan at quarterback to start the season while Kyle Murray finishes his recovery from a torn ACL.

They moved on from Colt McCoy, cutting him, and acquiored Josh Dobbs via trade.

While head coach Jonathan Gannon said he will not name whether Dobbs or rookie Clayton Tune will start at quarterback in Week 1 for competitive reasons, signs point toward Dobbs.

According to tight end Zach Ertz, there have been no problems with the trransition.

“He’s got a really good grasp of this offense,” Ertz told reporters during the week. “He has played it in the past, so him coming into the huddle and calling plays, calling the formations has been seamless so far.”

Ertz also noted Dobbs’ reputed intelligence — “he’s an astronaut or whatever he is.”

And, very important for him and his fellow pass catchers, “he throws a very catchable ball.”

Dobbs has been in the league since 2017 but has only appeared in eight NFL games and has started twice.

Cardinals won’t announce starting quarterback ahead of season opener

Jonathan Gannon says a plan is in place and believes not announcing the starter is a competitive advantage.

The Arizona Cardinals are going to have a good ole quarterback competition. With Kyler Murray expected to start the season on PUP and ineligible to return until after Week 4, and with the release of previously presumed starting quarterback Colt McCoy, the Cardinals will decide between rookie Clayton Tune and newly acquired Josh Dobbs as the Week 1 starter.

However, the Cardinals will not make that decision public.

“I’m not going to name a starter because I think it’s a competitive advantage for us going into Washington, but we’ll know who the starter is,” said head coach Jonathan Gannon on Monday.

Gannon suggests that perhaps he knows who it probably is but there will be some competition.

“I think we have a plan in place but I want to see them both play football,” he added. “This week we’ve got some work and then the following week we’ve got some work, but I feel good where were are at.”

When the first depth chart comes out next week, we will probably see the starting quarterback listed with both names separated by an “or”.

If we are guessing, signs point toward Dobbs, but we shall see.

POLL: Should Clayton Tune or Josh Dobbs start in Week 1?

Jonathan Gannon won’t announce who the starter will be in Week 1. Which do you think it should be? Vote in the poll!

The Arizona Cardinals will have a quarterback competition between rookie Clayton Tune and newly acquired veteran Josh Dobbs this week and next week to determine who will be the team’s starter in Week 1 when they face the Washington Commanders on the road.

Tune had good and bad moments in the preseason.

Dobbs has been in the league since 2017 but has played in only eight games and started two.

He has only attempted 85 NFL passes in the regular season.

He is familiar with the offensive system, having played for the Cleveland Browns with Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork.

Which quarterback should start in Week 1? Should it be Dobbs or Tune?

What do you think? Vote in the poll below.

Trade for QB Josh Dobbs adds intrigue to Cardinals’ quarterback situation

A look at what the move might mean for the Cardinals as the regular season approaches.

The Arizona Cardinals executed three trades on Thursday, the final of which was a move to acquire quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns.

The move creates all sorts of questions about the Cardinals’ quarterback situation.

Only 1 thing seems certain

With the addition of Dobbs, they now have three quarterbacks that will be on the final 53-man roster. That does not include Kyler Murray.

Colt McCoy will be there (with $2.25 million guaranteed salary), Dobbs will be there ($1.5 million guaranteed salary) and rookie Clayton Tune will be there.

The Cardinals don’t make this move if Murray is not starting the season on PUP.

That means at least four games before Murray’s return is even a possibility.

Josh Dobbs as a starter?

One of the first reactions to the trade was that Dobbs immediately becomes the Cardinals’ Week 1 starter.

While McCoy has looked underwhelming in the preseason and at times in training camp, even with Dobbs’ experience in the offensive system last season with the Browns, what about his career suggests he is a better option to start the season as the starter with only two weeks with the team?

Colt McCoy hurt?

McCoy got hurt right before last season and then, when he had to start late in the year, got hurt again.

McCoy didn’t play on Saturday. If he is at all injured, perhaps the team just doesn’t want rookie Clayton Tune starting.

That is where Dobbs comes in.

Dobbs replaces McCoy?

Would the Cardinals cut McCoy? Could he retire?

To cut him would be to eat more than $2 million. They would have to play him $2.25 million to not play.

Why would he retire now? His family was already prepared for him to play. He is scheduled to make $3.75 million, which is the highest salary he has earned in his entire career.

This wouldn’t make sense.

Dobbs as a trusted backup

This is what makes the most sense.

This is insurance to ensure Tune doesn’t have to start before he is ready.

Dobbs gives the Cardinals a backup they can trust if McCoy gets hurt before Murray’s return.

Murray’s return will create tough decision

Whenever Murray returns, especially if it is before midseason, it will create a tough decision.

They won’t have four quarterbacks on the roster, so they will have to cut or trade McCoy, Dobbs or Tune.

McCoy and Dobbs have guaranteed salary the Cardinals would have to eat if released. Tune is a rookie who showed a little promise in the preseason. He probably gets claimed off waivers.

Josh Dobbs almost signed with Cardinals in offseason

Dobbs was going to sign with the Cardinals but the Browns offered a fully guaranteed $2 million contract.

The Arizona Cardinals announced they acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns in a trade on Thursday.

This was not the first attempt this year the Cardinals attempted to acquire him.

According to Tony Grossi of ESPN 850 in Cleveland and The Land on Demand, Dobbs nearly signed with the Cardinals as a free agent in the offseason.

He spent most of last season with the Cleveland Browns, where Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was Dobbs’ quarterbacks coach. He was released after Deshaun Watson returned from his 11-game suspension and finished the season with the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans, where he made two starts.

But, per Grossi, the Browns admitted to Dobbs that they made a mistake in releasing him and offered him a fully guaranteed $2 million contract. He returned to Cleveland.

However, the emergence of rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the preseason made Dobbs available.

The Cardinals initiated the trade talks.

The Cardinals sent a fifth-round pick to the Browns in exchange for Dobbs and a seventh-rounder.

What role Dobbs will play is unknown. He might be the Cardinals’ third quarterback behind Colt McCoy and rookie Clayton Tune while Kyler Murray finishes his recovery from a torn ACL. He could start the season as the backup, while some speculate that he might end up being the Cardinals’ Week 1 starter.

Cardinals acquire QB Josh Dobbs from Browns

The Cardinals traded a fifth-round pick to the Browns for Dobbs and a seventh-round pick.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a third trade on Thursday, in addition to the deals sending safety Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants and tackle Josh Jones to the Houston Texans.

The newest deal was announced by the team Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals traded a 2024 fifth-round pick (the one they received from the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade during the draft) to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for quarterback Josh Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Dobbs has ties to the Cardinals. He was with the Browns last April to last November. Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was his position coach.

After Dobbs was waived, he was signed by the Tennessee Titans, where general manager Monti Ossenfort worked in the front office.

Dobbs has been in the league since 2017 when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round.

He has played in eight NFL games.

He started two games for the Titans last season, his only two career starts. The Titans lost both of those games and he completed 58.8% of his passes for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

What remains to be seen is what role he will have and what his acquisition means.

Will he start in Week 1 over Colt McCoy? Will he be the backup to McCoy or will he be the third quarterback on the roster, assuming Kyler Murray begins the season on PUP.

Dobbs is scheduled to make a fully guaranteed $1.5 million in 2023.

Browns trade Joshua Dobbs to Cardinals; recall Kellen Mond from waivers

The move paves the way for DTR to take the backup QB role

Just hours after head coach Kevin Stefanski said that quarterback Joshua Dobbs would be the backup to Deshaun Watson the Browns have traded Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals. Cleveland sends Dobbs and a 2024 seventh round pick to Arizona in exchange for a 2024 fifth round pick. The team also announced they never officially waived Kellen Mond and he will remain on the roster.

This reunites Dobbs and former Browns quarterback coach Drew Petzing who is the Cardinals’ new offensive coordinator. This move makes sense with the way rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson has played in the preseason while Dobbs struggled in the preseason and training camp.

Being able to flip a quarterback that you no longer needed to change a seventh-round pick into a fifth is a solid move by Andrew Berry.

Deshaun Watson not a top ten QB in Madden 24

Madden has the Browns quarterback ranked middle of the pack after bad 2022

The Madden 24 rankings continue to drop as EA Sports has released the quarterback rankings for this year’s game. After missing nearly two seasons and a rough final six games for the Cleveland Browns franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson, he found himself ranked 16th best at the position.

Some of the names in front of Watson in the rankings were the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff, the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, and the New Orleans Saints’ Derek Carr. Watson still got high ratings for throwing power and agility. All of the backup quarterbacks ranking around the same as each other with none of them standing out from the rest, let’s look at how Madden sees the Browns position group.
