WATCH: Dobbs to Mattison cuts Falcons lead before halftime

Josh Dobbs overcomes rough start in first action as a Minnesota Viking to cut the Atlanta Falcons lead to 1 before halftime.

Joshua Dobbs was back at his 32-yard line and ready to be sacked by Atlanta Falcons nickel cornerback Dee Alford on third-and-long.

Instead, he not only finds his way out of it, he finds daylight down the sideline and, behind a convoy of Minnesota Vikings, gets all the way down to the 2 for the first down.

Two plays later, Dobbs finds Alexander Mattison on a flare to the front pylon and the Vikings are down 11-10 to the Falcons right before halftime.

This game has been a war of attrition that General George S. Patton himself would look at in awe. Quarterback Jaren Hall and wide receiver K.J. Osborn have both been ruled out with concussions. The Falcons have injuries of their own on the offensive end.

Dobbs’ touchdown comes off a rough start as he has allowed five points off of a safety and a fumble that Atlanta almost returned for a touchdown.

Joshua Dobbs’ second dropback as a Viking ended in disaster and fans had jokes

First drive? Safety. Second drive? Fumble. It’s not going well.

Joshua Dobbs didn’t have much time to learn the Minnesota Vikings’ playbook. He had, after all, only spent four days with the team before its Week 9 showdown with the Atlanta Falcons.

That wasn’t supposed to be a problem. The journeyman backup had started eight games with an Arizona Cardinals team with little to play for in 2023, dutifully losing the games that could push the franchise closer to next spring’s top overall draft pick. He was acquired in the wake of Kirk Cousins’ torn Achilles to serve as a veteran mentor to rookie Jaren Hall, who was promoted to starter in Cousins’ absence.

But then Hall was injured on the opening drive of Sunday’s game. Dobbs entered and, well, looked exactly like a guy who had less than a week to learn his new team’s playbook.

Woof. That safety came after missing an open T.J. Hockenson on second down, leading to a long dropback, too much time in the pocket and a glaring lack of awareness at the 6-foot-8 Calais Campbell crashing through his periphery for two Falcons points.

Well maybe the replay will show an alternate angle that makes things a bit less embarrassing and awwwww crap, nope it’s worse.

OK, rough start, but surely his next drive will be better.

(long exhale, eyes roll so hard into back of skull they lose focus)

Needless to say, fans and analysts were a heady mix of amused and intrigued by Dobbs’ latest act of emergency, no-lead-time quarterbacking.

Cardinals can get draft pick back from Vikings in Josh Dobbs trade

If Dobbs starts enough games for the Vikings, the Cardinals will get the seventh-round pick back they sent Minnesota.

The Arizona Cardinals traded quarterback Josh Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday before the league trade deadline. They sent Dobbs and a seventh-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

That seventh-round pick is conditional and they could get it back.

According to John Gambadoro, the pick is conditional upon Dobbs’ playing time with the Vikings.

Per Gambadoro, if Dobbs starts half of the Vikings’ remaining games this season, the seventh-rounder will revert to the Cardinals.

The Vikings have nine games remaining in the regular season. If he starts five of them, the Cardinals will have gotten the sixth-rounder for just Dobbs. They will have gained a pick instead of simply gaining a round in the draft.

So with all the struggles Dobbs had, Cardinals fans should root for him to do well enough to start and remain the starter.

5 things to know about new Vikings QB Josh Dobbs

Here are five things to know about the new Vikings signal caller

The Minnesota Vikings acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals today in a trade that sent a sixth-round pick and they got back a conditional seventh-round pick.

The move is really smart, as they essentially get a capable depth piece for free and add a player that can help them on and off the field. Kirk Cousins will be on the sidelines to help the Vikings while he recovers from his torn Achilles but having a dual-threat to help out Jaren Hall is going to make a difference.

With Dobbs now joining his seventh team, get to know the latest Vikings quarterback.

Vikings trade for Cards QB Josh Dobbs

Vikings trade for Cards QB Josh Dobbs

The hours leading up to Tuesday’s trade deadline certainly saw an expected amount of action, as teams were making 11th hour deals to improve their chances for the remainder of the season. One of the more notable deals involved a player and two teams many might not have expected would matter as much as it has.

The Minnesota Vikings acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday in a trade that involved swapping later round picks. Dobbs is now off to his fourth NFL home in as many seasons.

The unfortunate loss of Kirk Cousins for the year due to a ruptured Achilles created the immediate need for a quarterback. Minnesota has fought back valiantly from an 0-3 start to now sitting at 4-4, with a soft upcoming schedule that includes the Falcons, Saints, Broncos, Bears and Raiders.

In an weird way, the Vikings are oddly victims of their own success. The reigning NFC North champions are playing too well for them to pack it in for the rest of the season. Minnesota owes it to their team and their fans to at least give it a shot with a viable quarterback.

If we’ve learned anything from the Cardinals this year, Josh Dobbs fits the bill. Arizona has been oddly more competitive than anticipated in 2023, and Dobbs is a big reason why. He has completed 62% of his throws for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions, as well as 258 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns.

With Dobbs gone from the Cardinals, it means the Seattle Seahawks will not be seeing him during their Week 18 rematch. Unless the Vikings end up playing Seattle in the playoffs, it’s likely the Seahawks won’t see him again the rest of the year.

8 quotes from Kevin O’Connell’s trade deadline press conference

O’Connell had plenty to say about the Vikings moves at the trade deadline

The Minnesota Vikings had a very active trade deadline by acquiring quarterback Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals and trading left guard Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What they didn’t do was trade Danielle Hunter or acquire a big name at the trade deadline.

As things currently sit, the Vikings are 4-4 with a beeline for a wild card spot and a plausible chance to win the NFC North. That will come down to either fifth-round pick Jaren Hall or Dobbs leading the way.

After the trade deadline, head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media about the direction of the team and where things stand with multiple players.

Winners and losers from the 2023 NFL trade deadline

Whether they were active or stagnant, which teams won and lost the 2023 NFL trade deadline?

Well that was something (?).

Yes, the NFL trade deadline has reached its midnight hour, and several players that were expected to have new homes remained within the walls they had already occupied.

That said, some players did get moved, but were they good moves? And what teams will be left with their head in their palms wishing they had been a tad more aggressive? Here are the winners and losers from the NFL trade deadline.

Zulgad: Observations from a busy trade-deadline day for the Vikings

Judd Zulgad wrote about a busy Vikings trade deadline and how it impacts the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings were busy as the NFL trade deadline passed on Tuesday, acquiring quarterback Josh Dobbs from Arizona in a deal that involved a low-level pick swap and then sending left guard Ezra Cleveland to Jacksonville for a 2024 sixth-round selection that originally belonged to Carolina.

Danielle Hunter, meanwhile, went nowhere as he continues to have an outstanding season.

Here are some thoughts on the moves the Vikings made and didn’t make.

Vikings acquire former Browns QB Josh Dobbs from Cardinals

Josh Dobbs and a 7th-round pick were traded by the Arizona Cardinals to the Minnesota Vikings for a 6th-round pick

The Arizona Cardinals are sending former Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh Dobbs and a conditional seventh-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for a sixth-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

Dobbs has had an extremely busy year. The Browns were the only team that offered him a reasonable contract in the offseason. The Cardinals traded a 2024 fifth-round pick for him at the end of August to manage their offense until Kyler Murray returned. On Monday the Cardinals told reporters that Murray or rookie Clayton Tune will start against the Browns in Week 9. Now he’s on his way to Minnesota to help stabilize their offense.

The Vikings needed to replace Kirk Cousins after he suffered an Achilles tear this weekend, ending his season. The Vikings started 0-3 but have turned their season around and are sitting at 4-4. They needed a quarterback, and Dobbs has familiarity with Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah during their shared time in Cleveland.

Dobbs was having an unproductive year in Arizona, as he’s ranked near the bottom of the league in most metrics. I think he’ll thrive in Minnesota, where he is surrounded by talented players. While some may question the trade, I think it’s a good deal for both teams. Hopefully, it can be a model for any  Browns trades today.

Jaren Hall named starter vs. Falcons

Kevin O’Connell has named Jaren Hall the starter for Sunday’s game against the Falcons

Jaren Hall has been named the starter for the Minnesota Vikings’ game this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, per comments from head coach Kevin O’Connell. The decision comes in the wake of the Vikings making a move today to trade for former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Minnesota sent a sixth-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Dobbs and a seventh. That seventh-round pick has the potential to become a sixth-round pick, should Dobbs eventually overtake Hall, becoming the starter and performing well.

But for now, the Vikings are set to continue on with Hall, who came into last week’s game against the Packers in relief of starter Kirk Cousins after his torn Achilles tendon injury.

We’ll have to wait and see how long it takes Dobbs to get acclimated to his new team and to learn the playbook. It will create an interesting decision for O’Connell and the Vikings front office if Hall plays well on Sunday and gives them something to think about going forward.
