How did CU’s pro day compare to NFL combine numbers?

A few pro day Buffs compared well to NFL combine players

The Colorado Buffaloes held their 31st annual pro day on Wednesday with nine players participating. Pro days are held across the country for college players hoping to make the NFL. Scouts from 16 different NFL teams were in attendance to watch the Buffaloes’ talent showcase their skills.

College pro days are a great way for anyone who may not have been invited to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis to get in front of scouts. No CU player was able to snag an invite to the NFL combine, but that doesn’t mean the NFL is not in their future. A breakout performance at a college pro day can propel you into a tryout, or even better, becoming a draft pick. But how did this year’s CU group stack up against the players who were at the combine?

Thanks to Horton Barbell, we can compare each pro day Buff to the average NFL combine numbers for their position:

Josh Chandler-Semedo named Colorado football’s team MVP

Josh Chandler-Semedo was named CU’s team MVP

It was a disappointing year for the Colorado Buffaloes. They finished the season with just one win and watched Karl Dorrell get dismissed after an 0-5 start. Owen McCown, Brendon Lewis, Drew Carter, Maddox Kopp and JT Shrout all rotated in at the quarterback position, and the offense was a complete nightmare for the Buffs.

After the season concluded, the Buffs handed out individual awards. West Virginia transfer LB Josh Chandler-Semedo was named the team MVP for the Buffs at the team banquet over the weekend.

After transferring from West Virginia, Chandler-Semedo was expected to play a massive role and he drew plenty of interest from the national media.

Chandler-Semedo led the team in tackles (101), 17 ahead of safety Trevor Woods. Chandler-Semedo also had 2.5 sacks and an interception in a rather rough year for the Buffs’ defense.

In a very forgettable season for the Buffs, Chandler-Semedo was a massive bright spot and he has plenty of NFL potential.

Running back Alex Fontenot was named the most outstanding offensive player, Trevor Woods won the defensive award and Toren Pittman was the special teams winner.

Now that the season is over, we can all shift our focus to the coaching search, where Deion Sanders has been garnering plenty of steam in Boulder.

Colorado football’s player of the game against Oregon State

Josh Chandler-Semedo deserves some praise for his showing at Oregon State

Here we go again. A week after the Colorado Buffaloes got their first win of the season, they came crashing down to Earth in a 42-9 loss to Oregon State in Corvallis.

It’s always tough to find a player of the game from such a disappointing game, but we might have found one: linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo. The West Virginia transfer has performed well with the Buffs in a tough season in Boulder, and his strong start to the season continued on Saturday night despite a dismal defensive outing.

Chandler-Semedo finished with four solo tackles, seven assisted tackles and was everywhere for Mike Sanford’s team on Saturday night.

The play of the game for Chandler-Semedo was him stuffing Jack Colletto on fourth-and-1.

Safety Trevor Woods was second on the team with 10 tackles, but Chandler-Semedo was a pest for the Buffs all night long.

In his two games prior, Chandler-Semedo had a combined 19 total tackles, and he also has three sacks on the season.

Inside linebackers coach Mark Smith spoke highly of Chandler-Semedo before the Oregon State game, and those words rang true on Saturday night.

It has been a difficult year for the Buffs all-around, especially defensively, but Chandler-Semedo has been one of the bright spots for a one-win football team.

CFB expert has Josh Chandler-Semedo as a top-15 LB

Josh Chandler-Semedo could turn out to be the Buffs’ biggest get in the transfer portal

The Colorado Buffaloes had a bittersweet time in the transfer portal. They lost a ton of players: Mekhi Blackmon, Jarek Broussard, Christian Gonzalez and Brenden Rice, for example.

On the other hand, the Buffs did add Baylor WR RJ Sneed II and others, including Alabama OL Tommy Brown.

One of the biggest gets was linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo, who made his way over from West Virginia.

The former Mountaineers linebacker has been a hot topic for many college football insiders, and for good reason.

Now, Mike Farrell dropped his list of the 50 best LBs in the country, and Chandler-Semedo is No. 12 on the list.

That is a talented list to be on, and Oregon Ducks star LB Noah Sewell is No. 1, which isn’t a surprise.

Pro Football Focus also had Chandler-Semedo as a top-20 LB in the country, so this is a common theme for the former West Virginia star. On3 Sports named him the fifth-best in the country, too. There is a ton of hype around Chandler-Semedo, and with Nate Landman and Carson Wells leaving for the NFL, he can replace some of that lost production.

Let’s see if Chandler-Semedo can live up to these lofty expectations and improve his draft stock.

Colorado is more loaded than you’d think at linebacker

The Buffs’ depth at linebacker has Karl Dorrell excited

The Buffaloes are replacing a pair of all-time greats this offseason as Nate Landman and Carson Wells have moved on to the NFL. Conventional wisdom would hold that Colorado’s linebackers group would take a step back with those leaders now gone.

Well, a funny thing has happened this year at the LB position for head coach Karl Dorrell (h/t Neil Woelk and CUBuffs.com):

“Right now, there’s eight or nine guys on that defensive unit that are all doing a great job of keeping everybody on the same page,” Dorrell said after a recent practice.

A talented trio of Quinn Perry, Robert Barnes and graduate transfer Josh Chandler-Semedo have stepped up to lead the defense. These three will be getting a lion’s share of the time at LB this year.

Behind these three are another wave of young LBs that have coaches pumped up for this position group. Players like true freshman Eoghan Kerry, second-year freshman Mister Williams and sophomores Marvin Ham II and Isaac Hurtado have made an impression on Dorrell (h/t CUBuffs.com):

“They’ve completely revamped our linebacker positions,” Dorrell said. “We have so much more depth and talent there than we’ve had. I feel really good about our first and second team linebackers.”

Josh Chandler-Semedo announces new uniform number

Josh Chandler-Semedo announced his new jersey number

When Josh Chandler-Semedo transferred to Colorado in April, his lucky No. 7 was already taken by fellow linebacker Marvin II. But No. 8 will be just as great for the former West Virginia Mountaineer.

Chandler-Semedo was one of the last incoming transfers to have a jersey number settled and with fall camp beginning Monday, time was running out. The 2021 All-Big 12 honorable mention finally tweeted out on Thursday that he’ll sport No. 8 for his final college season. Plus, thanks to the NIL, we can also expect some Chandler-Semedo swag.

The expectations are high for him this year and along with Robert Barnes, Colorado has a couple of veteran lockdown linebackers to lean on.

Colorado football state of the position: Outside Linebackers

Colorado’s outside linebackers will play a big role in 2022

CU is being tricky this year with its position groupings. The Buffs have a group of defensive ends we previewed last week listed as outside linebackers, while all of the linebackers are listed as inside linebackers. So, we could see some players moving around a bit.

Regardless, we will be highlighting the listed inside linebackers who we believe will be playing more on the outside, got it? As we highlighted earlier this month, the 4-3 alignment utilizes two outside linebackers, a SAM (a strong side LB that moves with the tight end) and a WILL (a weak side LB that positions himself away from the TE).

Let’s dig in with our projected depth chart coming first followed by some analysis:

Josh Chandler-Semedo tabbed the fifth-best LB in the country per On3

Josh Chandler-Semedo is a top-5 LB in the country according to this outlet

The Colorado Buffaloes football team is hoping to avoid another rough year in Boulder. There are some bright spots to help, and one of them is transfer linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo.

Chandler-Semedo transferred after receiving All-Big 12 nominations following a stellar campaign at West Virginia, and he will now fill the voids left by Carson Wells and Nate Landman, both of whom went to the NFL.

Chandler-Semedo has been receiving national attention as well and was ranked the fifth-best linebacker in the country, according to On3. Here’s what they wrote on him:

A transfer from West Virginia, Chandler-Semedo started 31 games for the Mountaineers. He had 260 tackles while at WVU, including 110 as a senior in 2021. Taking advantage of a free year of eligibility thanks to COVID-19, Chandler-Semedo’s current NIL valuation is $177,000.

That is some high praise for Chandler-Semedo, and with another successful season with the Buffs, he could be a potential early-round NFL draft pick in 2023.

At the top of On3’s list is Clemson LB Trenton Simpson, and after him is Oregon star Noah Sewell.

While the Buffs are projected to win very few games next year (SportsPac12 has them winning four contests), they still have a number of NFL-worthy players, and Chandler-Semedo is definitely one of them.

This is another terrific transfer portal addition for Karl Dorrell and his staff, and it could mean more big names headed to Boulder in the future.

Colorado lands All-Big 12 linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo from transfer portal

The Buffs added a huge piece to their defense via the transfer portal

Spring ball is officially a wrap for the Colorado Buffaloes, and after a successful spring showcase, all eyes are on the start of the 2022 college football season. That doesn’t mean there’s no work left to be done, and the Buffs’ roster is still evolving.

Their latest transfer portal addition announced his decision to come to Boulder on Saturday with Josh Chandler-Semedo, an All-Big 12 linebacker from West Virginia.

Chandler-Semedo will use his final year of NCAA eligibility with the Buffaloes. He has 31 career starts under his belt and was the Mountaineers’ active leader in career tackles with 260. In 2021, he led the team with 110 stops, 68 of which were solo efforts. He also had 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for a loss, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

The addition of Chandler-Semedo is absolutely huge for Colorado’s defense, which lost two of its biggest leaders and playmakers during the offseason as Nate Landman and Carson Wells both declared for the NFL draft. Chandler-Semedo will now bring a much-needed veteran presence to the Buffs’ defense.
