Bills’ Josh Allen’s history-making effort vs. Rams

Bills’ Josh Allen’s history-making effort vs. Rams

You might’ve heard by now, but Bills quarterback Josh Allen has made NFL history for the second-straight week.

While the Bills (10-3) lost to the Los Angeles Rams (7-6) in a 44-42 thriller in Week 14, Allen set another pro football benchmark.

Here it is: Allen is the first quarterback in NFL history to have three rushing and three passing touchdowns in a single game.

That comes after Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for a touchdown, rush for a touchdown and catch a touchdown in a single game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Saints fans’ most-searched player stats aren’t for anyone on the roster

Saints fans in Louisiana have spent a lot of time reflecting on the past. Their most-searched player stats aren’t for anyone on the roster:

New Orleans Saints fans in Louisiana have spent a lot of time reflecting on the past, which is easy to understand in a 4-8 season wrecked by injuries to star talents. But their most-searched player stats aren’t for anyone on the roster. Pro Football Network’s researchers found that readers from Louisiana visited the page for Drew Brees more than any other player.

Not Derek Carr. Not Alvin Kamara. Brees received more views on his PFN player stats page than any active Saints players.

Saints fans weren’t the only ones keeping an eye on their former players. New England Patriots fans in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine viewed Tom Brady’s page more frequently than any active Patriots players, too. Chicago Bears fans in Illinois kept tabs on Justin Fields (moreso than Caleb Williams) while Seattle Seahawks faithful in Washington state have been checking on the other Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Russell Wilson. And Tennessee Titans fans have been watching Derrick Henry’s progress with the Baltimore Ravens, too.

But studying this map makes a few things clear. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are faces of the league, while regional favorites like Josh Allen, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Sam Darnold and Brock Purdy are building strong followings. And it’s a quarterback-driven league. Henry is the only skills position player represented on the map. Finding a talented young passer is key, and the sooner the Saints can find a worthy heir for Brees, the better.

Why Bills’ Josh Allen still thinks he needed to play ‘better’ vs. Rams

Why Bills’ Josh Allen still thinks he needed to play ‘better’ vs. Rams

The Buffalo Bills headed West in NFL Week 14 to kick off a two-game road trip, and the first stop was in sunny Los Angeles, CA to take on the Rams at SoFi Stadium.

Buffalo had been on a winning streak since dropping two losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans earlier this season. However, their third loss of the year came on Sunday in Inglewood, 42-44.

Allen, who is in the midst of an MVP-worthy campaign, had another big day with the Buffalo offense as he went 22/37 with 342 passing yards and 82 rushing yards to go with 6 total TDs while becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to throw and rush for three touchdowns in the air and three on the ground.

The Bills defense, however, gave up 44 points.

And while Allen dazzled in the second half to give Buffalo a shot, the defense simply could not get enough stops or limit the Rams offensive scoring enough to make the game winnable.

Even still, his focus after the game was on his responsibility as the offensive leader.

“Hate losing,” Allen said. “If you lose by two or lose by 100, it doesn’t matter, you are still losing. Offensively, we have to find ways to score before and after the half. We didn’t do our part.”

The two teams exchanged blows on offense for four quarters, with Allen and company fighting to keep Buffalo in the game and coming back to bring the score within two points in the final minutes before the Rams recovered a failed onsides kick to run the clock out.

“I have to make one more play than they do. It was a total team loss in three phases. We didn’t play up to our standards,” Allen noted.

“I don’t know how well we did on third down or completion percentage, I don’t know any of that. I just know it wasn’t good enough to win a football game. I just got to find more completions, got to be better for our guys.”

Nonetheless, the QB’s performance was nothing short of historical.

“Incredible,” said Bills head coach Sean McDermott to the media. “Incredible. We’ve got to do a better job around him. If you look at the game, it’s line of scrimmage and being able to run the ball with our running backs. It’s line of scrimmage on defense, it’s special teams giving up big plays.”

In a clash of the league’s top clubs, each with Super Bowl aspirations this season, the Bills will next face one of their biggest tests yet in the Detroit Lions.

“Sometimes this can be as hard as it is, a good reminder of what you need to do every week in this league and how we have to adjust as a football team,” McDermott added. “Next week is a challenging game as well – they’re all challenging – against a really good football team on the road so we have our work cut out for us this week.”

Bills made some unfortunate NFL history vs. the Rams

Bills made some unfortunate NFL history vs. the Rams

The Bills’ loss to the Rams was historic in the worst way possible.

The Bills (10-3) lost late to the Rams (7-6) in a 44-42 thriller in Week 14.

Josh Allen was electric. He set some NFL history himself as he becomes the first QB to have thrill rushing and three passing scores in a single game.

As a team, the history was very bad.

According to NFL research, the Bills became the first time in the Super Bowl era to lose a game despite scoring six touchdowns and not turning the ball over. Nearly 250 teams have done that in the past, and they all won.

Ouch:

‘Josh Allen is an alien’: Sean McVay had the best description of Bills QB after historic game vs. Rams

Sean McVay perfectly described what it’s like to try to defend Josh Allen after the Rams’ win over the Bills

Stopping Josh Allen is one of the most difficult tasks in the NFL right now. Now that he’s cut down on the turnovers and played within structure more than he did earlier in his career, he’s an absolute nightmare to defend.

You can really just hope to contain him because no matter what you do, he’s going to move his offense down the field one way or another.

Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams learned that on Sunday afternoon when Allen threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 82 yards and three more touchdowns, giving him more than 400 total yards and six touchdowns in the game.

Allen is the first player in NFL history with three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in a regular-season game. Yet, it still wasn’t enough because the Rams beat the Buffalo Bills, 44-42.

After the game, Sean McVay had the perfect description of Allen.

“Josh Allen is an alien,” he said.

“Some of the stuff he can do and the things he can create, we knew he was capable of that. He’s shown that. It’s why he’s as well-respected and regarded in this league as he is. it’s all deserved and earned, but our guys found a way to just make enough plays to be able to come out on top.”

The Rams did a great job containing him as a runner in the first half, limiting him to just the 1 yard on two QB sneak attempts. But in the second half, Allen started to run more and it proved to be successful.

McVay described how challenging it is to defend him because you have to be disciplined with your rush lanes, but also aggressive in trying to apply pressure. The Rams won, but they had no answer for the MVP front-runner.

“It’s such a fine line. I thought he did a great job moving,” McVay said. “We had some good movements up front where you’re trying to have some ‘cover-me’s’ and different things like that, but if you leave a gap open, he’s going to step up. He can extend, keep his eyes down the field or he can run away from you. He can break tackles. I mean, he’s a nightmare to defend and so it’s a balance. I don’t think you can just sit back and let him navigate the pocket. He can beat you from the pocket, he can beat you with his mind, he can beat you with his arm, he can beat you with his legs. It’s why he’s a legitimate MVP candidate. It’s why he’s one of the best players in this league.”

It doesn’t matter how many yards the Rams gave up because they got the win, which is what counts. Sure, they’d rather not allow 445 total yards and give up six touchdowns to their opponent, but they were equally good on offense with 457 yards, 28 first downs and 44 points – seven of which were scored on special teams.

Josh Allen playing a historic game against the Rams only to lose is so classic Bills

The Bills let Josh Allen down in one of the best games he’s ever played.

At the moment, there’s really not much to quibble about the Buffalo Bills. They’re in line for a top-two seed in the AFC playoff picture, are a prime Super Bowl contender, and have one of the best football players on the planet. What could you possibly have to complain about a team that’s won five consecutive AFC East division titles?

Mostly, it’s that “best football player on the planet” part.

On Sunday, the Bills fell 44-42 in dramatic fashion to the Los Angeles Rams. (A non-false start from Rams right tackle Rob Havenstein might have helped.) At one point, the Rams went up 38-21 before Buffalo launched a furious comeback behind a perfect performance from Allen, who was marvelous from start to finish. All told, Allen put up 424 yards of offense (342 passing, 82 rushing) while throwing three touchdowns and running three himself.

It’s one of the best games Allen has ever played and is officially the first time ever an NFL player has thrown and rushed for three touchdowns each in a single regular season game.

The fact that the Bills lost anyway because their defense couldn’t reliably get a stop — letting Allen down in the process — is so classic Bills.

It’s been a while since Allen put on a red cape like this for the Bills, only for them to fall short. For what it’s worth, we know everything’s right in the world if the Bills are still unfathomably losing games like this after heroic efforts from their superstar face of the franchise.

Bills QB Josh Allen solidified his MVP case with 6 TD performance in 44-42 loss to Rams

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has won two MVP awards, and at one point this season, he appeared destined to win two straight, but Josh Allen has made his case this vote may end up being a runaway.

Playing in front of a national television audience, Allen accounted for 424 total yards and six touchdowns as Buffalo fell to the Los Angeles Rams, 44-42, at SoFi Stadium.

In the thrilling loss, Allen became the first player in NFL history with three pass touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Allen was 22 of 37 passing, for 342 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Allen had 82 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on the ground, finishing with a 117.2 passer rating.

Jackson will be there in the end, as he’s on pace for career highs in passing yards (4,302) and passing touchdowns (38), and he’s only thrown three interceptions through 13 games played. Jackson also has rushed for 678 yards and, at one point, was on pace for 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.

Saquon Barkley has made a great argument, but the Eagles running back will probably need to rush for over 2,200+ yards and break Eric Dickerson’s NFL rushing record to have any shot at winning MVP after Josh Allen’s performance on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Puka Nacua’s brilliance leads Rams to thrilling upset of Bills

Wild game sees Rams hold off Bills at SoFi

The Kansas City Chiefs got help from the co-tenants at SoFi Stadium before they faced the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Los Angeles Rams erupted for 44 points in a thrilling 44-42 home win over the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills’ loss gave the Chiefs an added cushion in the race for AFC playoff position.

Puke Nacua and Josh Allen had incredible performances.

The Rams receiver had 162 receiving yards, 12 receptions, and a touchdown catch. He also had five rushes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Allen, meanwhile, threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns.

It was the second game in NFL history with five rushing touchdowns, five passing touchdowns, and no turnovers.

The difference in the game was Nacua’s 19-yard touchdown reception from Matthew Stafford with 1:54 left.

Allen scored on a second quarterback sneak attempt with a minute left.

Tom Brady made a salient point on the FOX broadcast that Allen should have tried to pass the ball into the end zone rather than sneaking the first time, which was unsuccessful.

That caused the Bills to call a timeout they needed when they stopped the Rams on their final drive. The game ended with a Rams punt that ate up the remaining seven seconds on the clock.

Buffalo is 10-3. KC came into its game at 11-1.

The Rams are now 7-6 and in the thick of the tight NFC West race.

This was the second 44-42 final in NFC history. The previous one was in 1997 when the Eagles beat the Bengals.

Game respects game, even if Bills Mafia is still not a big fan of him.

NFL legend (sorry) Tom Brady, the former Patriots quarterback that tormented the Bills during his career, is on the call for Bills-Rams in Week 14.

Prior to kickoff, Brady made his way down to the field and had some chats with some members of the Bills. Included in that bunch for the Bills was head coach Sean McDermott, pass rusher Von Miller, and of course, quarterback Josh Allen.
