Panthers P Joseph Charlton wins NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Panthers punter Joseph Charlton has been named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Washington.

Panthers punter Joseph Charlton has been named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Washington.

Charlton averaged 47 yards per attempt and pinned the Football Team inside the 20 five times.

Charlton is a rookie who played his college football at South Carolina and was signed as an undrafted free agent after Michael Palardy suffered an ACL tear this offseason. During training camp, Charlton earned some bad headlines for booting a couple kicks over the wall. However, once the games began he proved to have what it takes at this level.

For the season, Charlton has punted 42 times, totaling 1,943 yards – a respectable average of 46.3 yards per attempt. He’s also completed one 28-yard per pass on a fake punt, giving him a 118.7 passer rating on the year.

Panthers Highlights: Another successful fake punt sets up Curtis Samuel touchdown

Watch rookie punter Joseph Charlton find wide reciever Brandon Zylstra wide open, resulting in another 28 yard gain.

The Panthers are getting good at this whole fake punt thing. Jeremy Chinn gained 28 yards on a trick play last week against the Falcons. Today, they tried something a little different against the Chiefs.

A gutsy call from coach Matt Rhule.

Curtis Samuel scored a touchdown moments later.

The Panthers lead the champs 14-3 early in the second quarter.

Panthers 2020 training camp: Kaare Vedvik takes all the kicker reps at practice

Panthers 2020 training camp: Kaare Vedvik kicking field goals now.

A clear theme has been established for the Carolina Panthers at training camp this year: the more you can do, the better. Young hybrid defenders like Jeremy Chinn and Troy Pride Jr. have been getting a lot of attention lately. That extra focus on versatility extends to the specialists, as well.

At today’s practice Kaare Vedvik took all the punter and kicker reps, including field goal attempts.

Vedvik has done both in his career. Since joining Carolina he had just been splitting reps with rookie punter Joseph Charlton, though.

While this is interesting, it doesn’t necessarily mean that kicker Joey Slye should be worried about his job security. He at least has a season of experience. Charlton could be another story, though. The rookie has booted a couple of punts over the wall at camp, which may have led to the team picking Vedvik up off waivers from the Bills.

Panthers 2020 training camp: 4 takeaways from Tuesday’s practice

Panthers 2020 training camp: 4 takeaways from Tuesday’s practice.

The Panthers have finished another training camp practice. Today’s session was another 11-on-11 heavy program.

Here are four takeaways from the media.

Kaare Vedvik takes all the punts

Rookie punter Joseph Charlton has demonstrated a powerful leg at camp. However, he’s had a couple oh-boy moments by booting two punts over the side wall. Last week, the team added former Bills punter Kaare Vedvik off waivers. Today, he took all of the punts.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Vedvik will be taking the job and Charlton will get cut. It’s only one day and there’s still time for either to prove themselves. Charlton was still holding for Joey Slye in warmups.

Panthers 2020 training camp: 3 takeaways from the third padded practice

The Carolina Panthers got yesterday off and returned to the field today for their third padded practice of 2020 training camp.

Here are a few takeaways from the media.

QB2 candidate P.J. Walker impresses

Our favorite to win the competition to be starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s backup had a strong showing. One beat reporter said it was Walker’s best practice yet, showing some zip on his throws as well as accuracy.

Walker will need to beat out Will Grier to get the job. If he can demonstrate better processing speed and decision making, it will give him a significant edge over Grier, who struggled with both as a rookie.

Panthers share new jersey numbers, clips from first training camp practice

Panthers share jersey numbers, clips from first training camp practice of 2020.

The Carolina Panthers held their first practice of the 2020 season today, going through a walk-through at Bank of America Stadium.

In related news, Carolina also released the jersey numbers for some of their new players.

CB Eli Apple: No. 41

The Panthers’ newest cornerback will be wearing No. 41, most recently used by former slot corner Captain Munnerlyn, who is a free agent after playing last season with the Bills. Apple is projected to start outside opposite Donte Jackson, but his spot is far from certain given his struggles in 2019.

LB Adarius Taylor: No. 47

This is Taylor’s second go-round in Carolina. He played 10 games for the Panthers in 2014, mostly on special teams. Taylor wore No. 57 that year and last season with the Browns. He’ll be No. 47 going forward.

P Joseph Charlton: No. 3

With Michael Palardy going on reserve for the year, South Carolina’s Joseph Charlton will be taking over at punter. Second-year quarterback Will Grier has switched to No. 7 for this season, opening up No. 3 for Charlton.

LB Kyahva Tezino: No. 46

Tezino was picked up off waivers from the Patriots last week. He’ll be competing with several other undrafted rookies for what could be the last linebacker spot on the roster.

The team also shared a short video on Twitter, showing a few clips of today’s practice.

Report: Panthers place P Michael Palardy on reserve, ending his 2020 season

Palardy has been the team’s punter since the 2016 season, playing in 55 games and averaging 45.3 yards per attempt.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Panthers have placed punter Michael Palardy on the reserve/non football injury list, ending his 2020 season. He will have surgery on his kicking leg after tearing his ACL earlier this offseason. Palardy plans on returning for the 2021 campaign.

Palardy has been the team’s punter since the 2016 season, playing in 55 games and averaging 45.3 yards per attempt.

There is already a replacement on the roster. Last week, the team signed former South Carolina punter Joseph Charlton to a three-year deal.

Panthers sign former South Carolina punter to 3-year deal

The Carolina Panthers have signed former South Carolina punter Joseph Charlton to a three-year deal, according to the team website.

The Carolina Panthers have signed former South Carolina punter Joseph Charlton to a three-year deal, according to the team website.

Charlton (6-foot-5, 190 pounds) averaged 47.7 yards per punt last season for the Gamecocks, up from 44.8 yards the previous year and 43.5 when he was a sophomore.

On the surface, it might seem like signing Charlton is all about giving some competition during training camp for Michael Palardy. The length of the deal indicates the team might have other plans, though. Palardy is only 28 years old and still has two years left on his contract. However, the team can save $2.1 million in salary cap room for 2020 if they cut him before the season begins.

The punting unit was a disaster for the Panthers in 2019, with the team allowing a league-worst 12.18 yards per attempt. That had more to do with poor coverage by the rest of the unit than anything Palardy was doing, though.

By our count there are now 89 players on the roster.
