Tough look for Jets: Sam Darnold was hyped to be traded to Panthers (video)

AFC East rival New York Jets traded QB Sam Darnold to Carolina Panthers.

The Jets traded quarterback Sam Darnold to the Panthers on Monday. The Bills will now, most likely, see a rookie quarterback facing them in green in AFC East games next season.

But don’t worry, the Bills will still see Darnold, too. He’s on the move, but to another 2021 opponent of the Bills. The Panthers are set to visit Orchard Park next season.

As things currently stand, the Bills will see a much happier Darnold when that game goes down.

After the news of the trade came down, a video eventually surfaced on social media. Touted quarterbacks coach Jordan Palmer, who also has coached Josh Allen, was evidently hanging out with Darnold when the news happened.

Palmer snapped this video and posted it on his social media. It’s not the best look for the Jets. Darnold seems pretty happy to be joining the Panthers:

Jordan Palmer discusses why Trevor Lawrence should be successful with Jags

The quarterback consultant said that the NFL might actually be less pressure than Lawrence was used to as the face of college football.

It’s not often a player comes around that receives the amount of pre-professional hype that Trevor Lawrence has. With him being considered a generational prospect, it’s a foregone conclusion he will be selected first overall by Jacksonville.

But quarterback consultant and former NFL passer Jordan Palmer thinks Lawrence is tuning out that chatter. On an episode of the “Patriot Talk Podcast” on NBC Sports, he discussed the former Clemson quarterback. You can listen to the clip starting at the 21:40 mark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsg2EFAIZx4

“I think Trevor is just trying to get better, he’s trying to figure out what it’s going to take to be great in the league right away and do those things,” Palmer said. “He has the most NFL franchise quarterback experience before college than anybody I’ve been around. I’ve been around Watson, Mahomes… Trevor’s been a big deal since his senior year in high school.”

Palmer thinks that Lawrence is used to high-pressure situations like this. A starter throughout all three of his years at Clemson, he’s been in the national spotlight since he won the national championship as a true freshman. And though the Jaguars expect a lot out of him, Palmer said there may actually be less attention and pressure on him once he gets to the league.

“If he goes to Jacksonville, I think Jacksonville is going to feel smaller than what he’s been dealing with… he’s been the face of college football for three years, not Clemson.”

The Jaguars will hope Palmer is right about Lawrence, as they are about to make him the centerpiece of the franchise for (hopefully at least) the next decade.

Trevor Lawrence begins training for NFL with former Jags QB Jordan Palmer

Trevor Lawrence is beginning his training for the NFL and it will be with a former Jaguars quarterback.

For fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 2021 NFL Draft can’t come soon enough as their fans are anticipating the likely selection of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. His potential addition would give the team the highest-rated prospect since Andrew Luck in the eyes of most, which is huge when considering the quarterbacks the franchise has had.

With Clemson’s season ending earlier this month, Lawrence has now turned his attention to preparing for the NFL. Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the journey has started with a former Jaguar, Jordan Palmer, who has become a renowned NFL quarterback tutor for EXOS in California.

Garafolo added that Lawrence is also preparing as if every team could end up with him. If that wasn’t enough, the former Tiger has also been learning how a typical NFL week of preparation goes from Palmer.

“Right now he’s going through exercises where he’s taking a team in the playoffs and he’s breaking them down as if he was game-planning for them,” said Garafolo. “So on Monday, he reviews the last couple of games for that defense. Tuesday, [he looks at] base pressures. Wednesday, sub pressures. Thursday, third-down. Friday, red-zone.”

“Basically, it’s as if you were game-planning because that’s what your week will be like in the NFL, so he’s getting a taste of that. I think that’s a huge reason these guys hit the ground running.”

Palmer has worked with several other notable quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Deshaun Watson. He’s been an offseason coach/ quarterback consultant for many years and spent time with the Jags (2012), Cincinnati Bengals (2008-10), and Chicago Bears (2013), to name a few.

Garafolo also stated that Lawrence was going to work on improving himself physically with goals to become a bit stronger, sturdier, and more mobile.

With the Jags being his likely destination, this news will probably make fans more eager to see Lawrence in training camp depending on if the coronavirus pandemic allows it. If not then, maybe the preseason will provide them with their first potential look at Lawrence.

As for the team, new coach Urban Meyer has been working hard to get the right staff in place for the potential acquisition of Lawrence and the team in general. It was announced this week that former Detroit Lions interim head coach Darrell Bevell is expected to be the team’s next offensive coordinator. His pairing with Lawrence is one fans have expressed excitement about as Bevell has worked with notable signal-callers like Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, and Brett Farve.

Josh Allen knows he can rely on Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold and Josh Allen have built a very strong friendship with one another.

Sam Darnold and Josh Allen began their NFL journeys together when they were drafted just a few minutes apart in 2018. Now the two quarterbacks are division rivals, but that hasn’t stopped them from forming a close friendship at the onset of their careers.

Allen was recently on SiriusXM NFL Radio and spoke about his relationship with Darnold. The Bills gunslinger said that Darnold was “one of the greatest dudes” he’s been around and added that he’s been able to count on the Jet for just about anything.

“We’ve been able to rely on each other,” Allen said. “Just kind of lean on each other I guess and just throughout the year. Texting each other and just making sure like we’re both doing OK, and we’re both adjusting well to it. So we’ve kind of had similar situations and it’s fun to have somebody like that that’s kind of going through the same things.”

The two AFC East quarterbacks have spent time together this offseason in Southern California while working with their trainer, Jordan Palmer. Darnold and Allen, both California natives, got to know each other before they got drafted in 2018.

So far in head-to-head matchups, Darnold has the edge over Allen, 2-1. Darnold’s first win over Allen was in 2018 when the Jets squeaked out a 27-23 win in Buffalo. Allen got his revenge in Week 1 last season when the Bills beat the Jets, 17-16. Darnold beat the Bills again in Week 17, 13-6. However, the Bills had clinched a playoff spot at that point and Allen only threw five passes before being subbed out for Matt Barkley.

Entering 2020, expectations are higher than ever for the third-year quarterbacks. Allen’s Bills are arguably the division favorites, while the pressure is on Darnold to make a significant leap in the department of consistency.

Whatever the new year throws at them, though, it sounds like the two will have someone to talk it over with.

Sam Darnold works out with Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey at UCLA

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold was joined by Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey at a UCLA workout.

Sam Darnold is finding some new workout buddies this offseason.

Darnold has spent the majority of the offseason working with trainer Jordan Palmer out in Southern California. He also organized a workout with the majority of the Jets’ offensive playmakers this past weekend in Florida. On Wednesday, however, Darnold was seen working out at UCLA with two of the league’s most prominent running backs: Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey.

Darnold’s approach to this offseason has been nothing short of spectacular. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic preventing Darnold and all other NFL players from entering their facilities, Darnold has still put the work in.

That’s leadership at its finest right there. Darnold understands that this season is the biggest yet of his young career. He’s had a year in Adam Gase’s system now and he has what’s expects to be a better supporting cast. The offensive line should be drastically improved, while the weaponry should be stronger as well.

Training camp is right around the corner and everyone is probably going to be a step behind because of the pandemic. Darnold, however, is doing whatever he can to be prepared for camp and the start of the 2020 regular season.

WATCH: Sam Darnold finds time to throw in the California sun

Sam Darnold was throwing passes on a California beach alongside his trainer Jordan Palmer.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is staying fresh throughout the virtual offseason program, throwing passes on the beach.

Darnold’s trainer, Jordan Palmer, recently took a video of him working on his footwork, as well as Darnold throwing a deep ball down the beach.

Darnold has spent the offseason working with Palmer, focusing primarily on improving his arm strength and deep ball accuracy. He’s also been joined by his good friends and fellow NFL quarterbacks Josh Allen and Kyle Allen.

With NFL training facilities temporarily closed as well as most fields, Darnold had to get creative to get some throws in. The beaches in Southern California are open as long as social distancing guidelines are followed.

For the Jets, it may be a while before their training facility opens back up. All but 10 teams are set to reopen their training facilities on Monday, but the Jets are not one of the teams that can open theirs. The state of New Jersey still has restrictions in place that prevent the Jets from opening their facility.

At least Darnold is making good use of his time throughout this public health crisis by staying in shape and working on his craft.

Josh Allen in quarantine with Sam Darnold, Kyle Allen

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer highlights that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is engaging in a self-quarantine with New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, Washington quarterback Kyle Allen.

Team activities for many NFL teams are on hold during the COVID-19 virus outbreak. Players are taking different measures in order to hone their craft during this time away from team facilities.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer highlights that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is engaging in a self-quarantine with New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, Washington quarterback Kyle Allen. The group is working with quarterback coach Jordan Palmer and former USC quarterback Matt Lopes.

“The quarterbacks wake up every day and, because all the parks and fields around them are shut down, go throw on the beach by Darnold’s house. After that, they’ll go back to the house, eat lunch, play cards, watch TV, play some more cards and eventually watch movies at night. The biggest problems, really, are losing the chance to work with the rehab guy they’d been using, and fighting boredom.”

The group was planning on working out as per usual as part of their offseason training regimen with Palmer. However, the explosion of the COVID-19 virus along with several calls from municipalities to led to this developing sitcom.

The Allens have been in southern California together for weeks, according to Breer.

It’s not a bad spot for young quarterbacks to continue to develop in the offseason. With self-quarantine, their focus on football will aid in bolstering their skills while squashing boredom.

Josh Allen is ahead of schedule, says QB coach Jordan Palmer

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen is ahead of schedule says QB coach Jordan Palmer.

Each NFL offseason, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has worked with Jordan Palmer. The one-time former Bill himself in Palmer describes himself as a “quarterback consultant” which means he’s pretty much an offseason coach for NFL QBs.

Allen isn’t alone in working with Palmer, plenty of others do, such as the Jets’ Sam Darnold and the guy who’s going to be the first-overall pick at the 2020 NFL Draft, Joe Burrow.

At the NFL Scouting Combine this week, Palmer made an appearance, making the rounds seeing as he’s working with some rookie QBs as well as vets, such as Burrow. It’s well known that Allen works with Palmer, so Palmer jumped on the Bills’ radio show on Thursday and provided a status update on Buffalo’s signal caller.

“He’s ahead of where I’d thought he’d be right now, by the way,” Palmer said. “I was chirping all draft, telling everybody how awesome this guy is going to be. With that being said… because what’s interesting about Josh is he never took over and dominated and won a single game at Wyoming…

“The question mark is, was he going to be a gamer [in the NFL]?” Palmer continued. “Is what (Allen) has proven is that [his game] does more than translate, he’s getting really good at winning games, managing the clock, managing situation football, completing balls that need to be completed, making plays that weren’t there.”

Well, situational football? Kind of, we still remember that attempted lateral to Dawson Knox in the playoffs, but that’s still just an example of how Allen is certainly a “gamer” in the NFL. He’s proven that and has the fourth-quarterback comebacks to prove it.

But, Allen’s not perfect. Ahead of schedule still means that the Wyoming product is probably… a middle of the pack kind of QB and there’s things Allen has certainly improve upon. Palmer admitted that.

“I think everybody has some throws they’d like back,” Palmer said.

For Allen? That’s a lot of deep balls. Palmer said improving that’s been a focus this offseason and he’s seen improvements in it thus far. But Palmer also broken down a deep ball in an interesting light, describing it as something not only on the quarterback.

“It is absolutely a two-person deal. A lot of it is what you’re seeing and what you’re doing and what you’re feeling… but I do think the feel you have throwing to guys is a piece of that,” Palmer said.

“He’s throwing it to a moving object and they all move differently,” Palmer explained.

The QB coach said Allen has never ever blamed any of his targets for his struggles. But these comments certainly shine some thought on what the Bills might need next. A bigger deep-ball threat for Allen.

Based on what Palmer said, that’d be a useful thing for the Bills to invest in this offseason, and perhaps with another year of seasoning, Allen will start connecting on some more deeper passes to John Brown & Co. next season too, just based on more reps. A positive outlook for Buffalo’s boy.
