Saints address the trenches in recent three-round mock draft

The Saints addressed the trenches in a recent three-round mock draft, improving their pass rush and hitting the reset button at left tackle:

Mock draft season begins to ramp up as the NFL regular season begins to wind down. The New Orleans Saints draft spot is up in the air, with the NFC South winner still undecided. They currently sit around the middle of the first round, which Curt Popejoy used for his recent three-round mock draft for Draft Wire.

With the No. 13 overall selection, this mock draft has the Saints selecting UCLA defensive end Laiatu Latu. This would be a stellar, albeit characteristic, selection for New Orleans. Some believe Latu to be the best defensive prospect in the draft, but (Saints fans cover your eyes) has serious medical concerns. Latu suffered a neck injury during his sophomore season that caused him to medically retire from football. He was cleared to play in 2022 and has been good to go for the past two seasons. During those two seasons he has racked up 23.5 sacks and 34 tackles for a loss along with two interceptions. He’s a very talented player that could end up as a steal for the Saints.

In the second round, with the No. 46 overall selection, the Saints then took offensive tackle Jordan Morgan out of Arizona. The Trevor Penning selection is looking worse and worse as time goes on, so it is looking like the Saints may need to go back to the drawing board at left tackle. Pro Football Focus gave Morgan one of their highest pass blocking grade at 87.7 for last season. He is a large tackle with five seasons of football under his belt. The hope is that he would be able to come in and contribute early on.

2024 NFL draft: Bowl season offensive tackle big board

2024 NFL draft: Bowl season offensive tackle big board from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

Bowl season just kicked off over the weekend with a trio of exhibitions. It kicks into full force in the coming days. It’s a good time to update some positional rankings.

As of now, this is how I rank the offensive tackles. It’s a very impressive class overall, with a few different flavors that will appeal to certain teams more than they do others. I broke down a little of that with Joe Alt and Olu Fashanu here.

Note: I rank Duke’s Graham Barton as an interior OL. He’d be sixth on this list.

Commanders land help at multiple positions in new 2-round mock draft

The Commanders get help at multiple key positions in new 2024 NFL mock draft.

Thanks to the in-season trade of defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears, the Washington Commanders will have three picks in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Commanders, under new owner Josh Harris, will likely have new leadership next season. Harris is expected to bring in a new general manager and head coach. And with five total picks in the first three rounds and over $90 million in salary-cap room, the Commanders will be an attractive option.

One positive from Washington’s current season is the development of second-year quarterback Sam Howell. While Howell has a long way to go to convince the Commanders he’s the man to build around, he’s trending in the right direction.

But will a new coach and GM feel the same?

If not, the Commanders have the assets to move up in the draft if they spot another passer they like. If not, the extra selections allow Washington to build the team around Howell.

In a new two-round mock draft from Jeff Risdon of Draft Wire, the Commanders are first on the clock at No. 12 and select Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan.

Another projection that seems out of line with the current thought on rankings, but Morgan has the kind of game that should age well in evaluations. The Commanders cannot neglect the offensive line if they want Sam Howell to thrive.

This may seem a bit high for Morgan right now, but if Washington stays put and goes for its top need, Morgan could be the best available. The 6-foot-5, 325-pound Morgan has the size and length to become a standout left tackle in the NFL.

With their first second-round pick — the pick from the Bears —Washington selected Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell at No. 37.

With their own second-round pick, No. 43, Washington selected Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter. Carter would give the Commanders a playmaking linebacker they sorely need.

So much will change for Washington in a few months. The Commanders could be picking in the top 10 of the draft, meaning they would be a prime candidate to move up and select one of the draft’s top offensive line prospects, such as Olu Fashanu or Joe Alt. Either way, Washington will have plenty of options to improve its roster.

It should be an interesting offseason.

Saints invest in the trenches in 5-round 2024 mock draft

The Saints made the trenches a priority in this five-round 2024 mock draft, starting off strong with Florida State sack artist Jared Verse:

It’s a rainy Saturday in November with tons of 2024 NFL draft prospects competing in their college matchups, so we’ll take a spin on the Pro Football Focus mock draft simulator to try and find some help for the New Orleans Saints.

Obviously it’s too soon to seriously guess about their team needs when we’re only midway through the current regular season (with a busy free agency period on the horizon), but it’s worth keeping tabs on who is impressing college football fans and NFL scouts ahead of the next draft cycle.

With that in mind, here are our picks through five rounds with analysis for each selection:

2024 NFL mock draft roundup: Eagles continue retooling in the trenches

The Eagles are 6-1 and atop the NFC East, but it’s never too early for a look ahead to the 2024 NFL draft. Philadelphia has never drafted an off-the-ball linebacker in the first round, and they won’t this spring either, but Howie Roseman will reload …

The Eagles are 6-1 and atop the NFC East, but it’s never too early for a look ahead to the 2024 NFL draft.

Philadelphia has never drafted an off-the-ball linebacker in the first round, and they won’t this spring either, but Howie Roseman will reload in the trenches.

We’re looking ahead, and mock draft roundups have the Birds restocking in the trenches.

Browns replace Jedrick Wills in latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft with Arizona’s Jordan Morgan

The Browns land a new offensive tackle in a new mock draft.

The Cleveland Browns have an offensive tackle issue as former first round pick Jedrick Wills has failed to develop after what was a promising start to his career. And because of that Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon has mocked Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan to the Browns in the second round of his latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft.

Morgan, a fifth-year senior, has been a standout for the Wildcats over the past two seasons as he has seen his draft stock rise.

For a second round pick, however, Morgan does not check the typical boxes the Browns look for. For starters, they have never drafted a player who was going to be 23 before taking an NFL snap earlier than the third round under general manager Andrew Berry.

However, seven offensive tackles went before Morgan in this mock draft, so the options were wearing thin. While Wills is guaranteed in 2024, it feels unlikely the Browns will run it back with him at left tackle at this current trajectory.

Offensive tackle remains a high priority.

2024 NFL draft stock watch after CFB Week 5: Who’s up and who is trending down?

2024 NFL draft stock watch after CFB Week 5: Who’s up and who is trending down?

Another exciting and interesting weekend of college football wrapped for the potential prospects for the 2024 NFL draft. Over a month into the college season, we’re starting to see who is consistently performing and who is more variable from week to week.

It’s a season-long process evaluating players, of course. But there are great weeks and down weeks for (almost) every prospect along the way. Here’s who helped themselves in Week 5 and who didn’t have a great showing over the final days of September.
