Former Florida OL commits to one of Gators’ 2023 opponents

The Gators reserve OT is seeking greener pastures with the Charlotte 49ers.

Another former Florida football player found a new home through the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday when reserve offensive tackle [autotag]Jordan Herman[/autotag] committed to the Charlotte 49ers, per a post on his personal Twitter account.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 371-pound lineman declared his intent to enter the portal back in mid-November and nearly five weeks later he signed on with a new school.

Herman played in just one game during the 2023 campaign — the home opener against McNeese State, in which the Gators emerged victoriously, 49-7. Incidentally, he did not take the field against his now-new team for the Week 4 matchup in the Swamp.

The redshirt sophomore appeared against Eastern Washington in the 52-17 win as well as a 38-6 blowout against South Carolina in 2022.

“I want to thank Coach Napier and Coach Stapleton for giving a JUCO kid an opportunity of a lifetime and making my dreams come true,” Herman said in a tweet announcing his departure. “After talking with my family and the people closest to me, I will be entering my name in the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining.”

Pro Football Focus grades Herman decently as a pass blocker, but his small sample size (28 total snap counts) makes it difficult to take beyond a grain of salt.

Herman will have two more years of eligibility remaining to use with the 49ers. He joins Florida quarterback Max Brown in Charlotte.

Florida offensive lineman Jordan Herman entering transfer portal

The transfer portal announcements have begun with offensive tackle Jordan Herman announcing his departure with two games left in the season.

Florida’s offensive line has struggled this season, and now it’s losing reserve tackle [autotag]Jordan Herman[/autotag] to the transfer portal.

Herman took to social media on Sunday to break the news. He joined the team as a transfer from the junior college ranks ahead of the 2022 season, but he’s played in just one game this year (McNeese State).

“I want to thank Coach Napier and Coach Stapleton for giving a JUCO kid an opportunity of a lifetime and making my dreams come true,” Herman wrote. “After talking with my family the people closest to me, i will be entering my name in the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining.”

In 2022, Herman appeared against Eastern Washington and in a 38-6 blowout against South Carolina.

Pro Football Focus gives Herman a decent grade as a pass blocker, but his limited snap count (28 total) might negate any numbers there are on him. Still, he’s a capable left tackle, especially at 6-foot-8-inches tall and 371 pounds.

Herman will have two more years of eligibility wherever he goes, but he should end up somewhere with a clear path to playing time so he can prove himself right away.

Here are the recruits who visited the Swamp this weekend

Recruits are beginning to make visits to school again, and Florida hosted a pair of players over the weekend.

June will be the month that recruiting really picks back up with several prospects planning official and unofficial visits to the Swamp over the summer. But, at least two names were in Gainesville over the weekend, according to 247Sports, four-star running back [autotag]Treyaun Webb[/autotag] and Hutchinson C.C. offensive line transfer [autotag]Jordan Herman[/autotag].

Webb has been high on Florida for months and is no stranger to campus. He’s gone as far as to call the Gators his outright leader ahead of a planned June 30 commitment date. The Gators landed four-star running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] in the 2022 cycle and Webb looks to be the guy this year. Another visit to the Swamp only furthers the narrative, and the crystal balls are coming in on 247Sports for the Gators as well.

Herman, who likely will block for Webb down the line if he commits to Florida, gave his pledge to the Orange and Blue site unseen after picking up an offer. Offensive line coach [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] has already deemed him worthy of SEC play, and the agreement came together rather quickly. This was Herman’s first trip to UF and his first look at his home for the next few years.

Arizona State defensive line transfer [autotag]Jermayne Lole[/autotag] was supposed to be the third name on the visitor’s list, but he committed to Louisville on Friday and won’t be making the trip.

Film shows incoming JUCO lineman improved his game in 2021

We took a look at the film on Florida’s JUCO transfer and break it down for you here.

Transferring JUCO offensive tackle [autotag]Jordan Herman[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Tuesday, making him a very late addition to the 2022 class. After playing college ball for Hutch CC for the past two seasons, he didn’t earn much notoriety in the transfer portal and the Gators were his only reported SEC offer. However, there’s reason to believe Herman is a hidden gem uncovered by the Orange and Blue’s staff.

Swamp247 reported that both of the Gators’ offensive line coaches — [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] — had a hand in Herman’s recruitment. Stapleton was able to watch Herman play live during his trip to Kansas, and the tackle wasted no time committing after the Gators’ scholarship offer was extended.

The eye-popping physicality is what immediately jumps off the screen when you watch Herman play. He is a fully grown man in the most complete sense of the term, standing at a whopping 6-foot-8-inch height and carrying 370 pounds. Size seems to be the attribute that Stapleton and Sale are willing to gamble on, as it was the primary selling point for ULL offensive line transfer [autotag]Kam Waites[/autotag].

Herman has had far more opportunity to play competitive football than Waites has, though, and the Hutch CC product showed tremendous growth in the technical aspects of his position last season.

The easiest thing to spot in the tape available is how much he was able to improve his snap timing and first-step quickness. In the screenshot taken from Fall Camp ’21, Herman is still in his crouch while all the other offensive linemen are already engaging with the opposing line. In the screenshot taken from Spring Camp ’22, he’s no longer the last man off the line, getting into his pass set instantly.

It’s a little harder to show with a quick tweet, but I was also impressed by how much crisper his pass sets became over the course of the six or so months between Hutch CC’s fall and spring camps. By no means is he putting up teaching tape, but the ability to get into clean pass sets is a must in the SEC and he clears that bar. Watch for yourself, you can compare his film throughout the season on his Hudl page.

For a huge player like Herman, the ability to get off the line hastily will immediately improve his on-field production. Functional strength and athleticism are a big deal in the modern evaluation process and this is a good example. A monster frame is useless if Herman lumbers so slowly that the rusher is past him by the time he gets into position.

Speed-to-power conversion is all the rage among upper-level edge rushers right now. By simply being where he’s supposed to be when he’s supposed to be there, Herman can rely on his size to thwart those efforts as opposing rushers will be unable to gain leverage, and therefore, the upper hand in any given rep.

That’s not to say Herman is a picture-perfect prospect. I fully expect him to get burned by pure speed rushers and his hand usage doesn’t make the best use of his physical traits. However, rapid improvement in a player’s sophomore season is a great sign for their future. Between his size and his rapidly improving technique, Herman is the kind of player you absolutely have to take a chance on and he’ll be an intriguing sixth lineman to lean on when injury strikes.
