Panthers HC Dave Canales ‘really optimistic’ about status of RB Jonathon Brooks

Panthers HC Dave Canales on RB Jonathon Brooks: “We got a real critical decision to make with him this week.”

It’s crunch time on Jonathon Brooks’ 2024 season.

The Carolina Panthers have until 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday to move the rookie running back to the 53-man roster. If they decide not to activate Brooks, who is working his way back from a torn ACL he sustained last November, his campaign will officially be over.

So, with that decision having to be made within the next 48 hours, head coach Dave Canales was asked about the current status of the team’s second-round pick this afternoon.

“Really optimistic about Jonathon, as far as just the week that he had,” Canales stated on Monday. “We got a real critical decision to make with him this week, really on Wednesday. So, Brooks and Jaden Crumedy will be the two decision we gotta make this week, whether we feel like it’s time for them to come up.”

Crumedy, Brooks’ fellow 2024 draftee, also has yet to make his NFL debut due to an ankle injury.

Is Jonathon Brooks playing today? Injury updates for the Panthers RB in Week 9

Is Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks set to make his NFL debut in Week 9?

We’ll still have to wait on the NFL debut of Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks.

The rookie rusher has officially been downgraded to out for today’s NFC South showdown against the New Orleans Saints. Brooks, who practiced in full throughout the week, was initially listed as questionable.

Carolina selected Brooks with the 46th overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft. The University of Texas standout tore his ACL last November and remained sidelined throughout the offseason.

His status for Sunday shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as head coach Dave Canales hinted at holding him out on Friday.

“The guys stacked really solid weeks,” Canales told reporters after practice. “We’re gathering all that information. And we’ll go through this weekend probably without those guys—we’re talkin’ about Brooks, we’re talkin’ about [D.J.] Wonnum, we’re talkin’ about [Adam] Thielen.

“So guys that are certainly trending towards where we know where they can help us. But wanna be completely sure for the guys and for the team.”

Thielen and Wonnum were also among the five players who were downgraded to out on Saturday.

The Panthers have until Wednesday, the end of Brooks’ practice window, to activate the 21-year-old running back to the roster. If they do not, Brooks must miss the remainder of the campaign.

Panthers announce 3 moves ahead of Week 9 matchup vs. Saints

The Panthers called up some depth for tomorrow’s matchup against the Saints.

The Carolina Panthers made a few adjustments before tomorrow’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has signed tight end Jordan Matthews to the active roster. The 32-year-old was in his second stint on Carolina’s practice squad this season.

Matthews was the Panthers’ second-leading receiver during preseason play, where he amassed 68 yards and a touchdown on seven catches.

He’ll provide some depth at the tight end position for the NFC South showdown with Tommy Tremble (back) listed as questionable and Feleipe Franks (concussion) already out.

The Panthers also elevated wide receiver Deven Thompkins and cornerback Caleb Farley from the practice squad. Sunday will mark the first elevation for Thompkins and the second for Farley, who recorded six snaps on defense and five on special teams in last Sunday’s 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos.

In addition, the team downgraded running back Jonathon Brooks (knee), wide receiver Adam Thielen (hamstring), defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy (ankle), outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum (quadriceps) and safety Jordan Fuller (hamstring) to out for the contest.

Panthers HC Dave Canales provides injury updates on Jonathon Brooks, Adam Thielen

Panthers HC Dave Canales offered updates on the progress of RB Jonathon Brooks, WR Adam Thielen and OLB D.J. Wonnum heading into Week 9.

The Carolina Panthers will probably be without a few notable names on offense this Sunday.

Friday’s injury report for the team’s Week 9 contest against the New Orleans Saints already lists starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu as out due to ankle issue. In addition, wide receiver Adam Thielen (hamstring) and rookie running back Jonathon Brooks (knee) have been designated as doubtful and questionable, respectively.

Head coach Dave Canales provided a bit more context on Thielen and Brooks—as well as outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum, who is recovering from his offseason quadriceps surgeries.

“The guys stacked really solid weeks,” Canales stated this afternoon. “We’re gathering all that information. And we’ll go through this weekend probably without those guys—we’re talkin’ about Brooks, we’re talkin’ about Wonnum, we’re talkin’ about Thielen.

“So guys that are certainly trending towards where we know where they can help us. But wanna be completely sure for the guys and for the team.”

Brooks has until Nov. 6 to be activated to the roster while Thielen has until Nov. 13.

Panthers Week 9 injury report: LT Ikem Ekwonu, 2 others out vs. Saints

Panthers QB Bryce Young won’t have his starting LT on his blindside in Week 9.

The Carolina Panthers and quarterback Bryce Young will be without their starting left tackle on Sunday.

Third-year offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu has been ruled out of the team’s Week 9 contest against the New Orleans Saints. Ekwonu was a non-participant in practice throughout the entire week due to an ankle injury.

Head coach Dave Canales told reporters that Brady Christensen will get the start at left tackle in place of Ekwonu. Cade Mays will, in turn, take over at center for Christensen.

Panthers WR Xavier Legette pops up on Thursday’s injury report

Panthers WR Xavier Legette was added to the Week 9 injury report on Thursday.

Carolina Panthers wideout Xavier Legette may want to take it easy on ol’ Dolla Bill for the rest of the week.

The rookie receiver was added to the team’s Week 9 injury report with a toe issue. Legette, who scored his third NFL touchdown in this past Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos, has been listed as a limited participant for Thursday’s practice session.

Fellow rookie Jonathon Brooks (knee) remains on the report, but was down as a full participant for the second straight session. Outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum (quad) was also a full participant once again.

In a bit of potentially concerning news, left tackle Ikem Ekwonu missed another outing due to an ankle injury.

Panthers list RB Jonathon Brooks as full participant for Wednesday’s practice

Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks is getting closer to his NFL debut.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton won’t be getting the start in Week 9, but he’s closer to getting back to full health.

The veteran passer, who missed this past Sunday’s 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos due to a sprained right thumb, was listed as a full participant for today’s practice. He will, however, give way once again to Bryce Young—who was announced as the Week 9 starter by head coach Dave Canales.

Canales had this to say about Dalton’s status:

“Andy is progressing. He was out there throwing. And I just really looked at all the things and for me, I just erred on the side of caution and wanted get Andy in the best possible situation to be able to make a decision going forward.”

Joining Dalton as a full participant was rookie running back Jonathon Brooks (knee), who has yet to make his NFL debut. The Panthers now have one week to activate Brooks to the main roster.

Canales did not rule out Brooks from suiting up for Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Panthers Week 8 inactives: 7 players ruled out vs. Broncos

The Panthers will be without a few key offensive weapons in Denver this afternoon.

If Bryce Young wants to make a statement in the Mile High City this afternoon, he’ll have to do it without the help of a few key weapons.

The Carolina Panthers have ruled seven players as inactive for their Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos, including wideout Diontae Johnson. Johnson will miss his first game of the campaign due to a rib injury.

With the Panthers at 1-6 and the trade deadline just a little over a week away, Johnson’s absence has raised some speculation about a possible deal. Head coach Dave Canales was asked on Friday if the decision to hold Johnson out relates to preserving a move of the one-time Pro Bowler.

“Those are all conversations that Dan [Morgan] and Brandt [Tilis] will handle,” Canales replied. “For me, it’s like, I wanna do the best thing for Diontae, the best thing for the offense and the continuity of what we’re trying to get done. And the fact that he couldn’t get back on the field this week, I felt confident about the guys being able to step in there and do it.”

The Panthers will also be without last year’s leading receiving Adam Thielen, who is still on his way back from a hamstring strain. Thielen was designated to return to practice on Wednesday, but has yet to be activated to the main roster.

Here is the full list of inactives on the day for Carolina:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • RB Jonathon Brooks
  • QB Andy Dalton
  • CB Dane Jackson
  • WR Diontae Johnson
  • OT Yosh Nijman
  • S Jammie Robinson

And for Denver:

  • CB Kris Abrams-Draine
  • TE Greg Dulcich
  • S P.J. Locke
  • OT Alex Palczewski
  • OLB Dondrea Tillman
  • DL Eyioma Uwazurike
  • QB Zach Wilson

Is Jonathon Brooks playing today? Injury updates for the Panthers RB in Week 8

We’re still waiting on the NFL debut of Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks.

The NFL debut of Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks will not go down this afternoon.

Brooks was officially ruled out of the team’s Week 8 matchup against Denver Broncos on Saturday afternoon. The rookie rusher, who is continuing his comeback from an ACL tear, was previously listed as questionable for the contest on Friday’s injury report.

Carolina selected University of Texas standout with the 46th overall pick of the 2024 draft. Despite the expectation that he would’ve been ready by training camp, Brooks remained sidelined throughout the summer and began the regular season on the physically unable to perform/non-football injury list.

The Panthers designated the 21-year-old to return to practice back on Oct. 16.

Head coach Dave Canales said the following of Brooks after Friday’s session:

As of this writing, the Panthers have 10 days to activate Brooks to the 53-man roster. If they do not, Brooks will not be permitted to play for the rest of the season.
