Fantasy Football: Colts RB Jonathan Taylor will miss the first month of 2023

No trade was reached, and Indy will be without its star back for at least a month.

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) is expected to remain with the Colts after a trade was not reached. Although two teams reportedly had shown serious interest, he was kept on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which means Taylor will miss at least the first four games. There’s no guarantee he returns once players are first eligible to come off the PUP in Week 5.

This is pretty close to the worst-case scenario for fantasy football purposes. While a trade would could have only slightly raised or lowered his fantasy outlook for the upcoming season, missing the first month is a tough pill to swallow for gamers who drafted before this news broke.

Assuming he is not eventually traded, Taylor should return to face a brutal run defense at home vs. Tennessee, followed by a trip to Jacksonville, a return home for Cleveland, and then a Week 8 meeting with New Orleans at Lucas Oil Stadium. Not great, not terrible. If healthy, Taylor is elite and capable of exploiting even poor matchups, but he’ll have an uphill climb.

Owners who have already rostered Taylor will need to gut it out for a month. Luckily, we don’t have bye weeks during that time to further tax your roster depth. Don’t dump him for nothing to another owner looking to exploit your tough situation.

For anyone who has yet to draft, it’s best to leave him for someone else, barring a total free fall by Taylor in your draft. His ceiling is fringe RB1 in the best of situations, which is improbable at this point, and low-end No. 2 finish is much more reasonable given what we currently know.

Indianapolis should turn to some combination of Zack Moss and Deon Jackson, once the former is able to return from a fractured arm. With a run-minded rookie quarterback under center, none of these backs will be better than an RB3 most weeks and shouldn’t be rostered as higher than your fourth.

Ian Rapoport on Jonathan Taylor: ‘It’s likely he gets traded’

Ian Rapoport believes it’s more likely Jonathan Taylor gets traded than he stays with the Colts.

The soft deadline for a potential trade involving Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has arrived, and the NFL world will be on the edge of its seat waiting to see if a deal gets done.

Entering Tuesday morning, reports have maintained that two teams are active in the running for Taylor and that their offers to the Colts are substantive, per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.

Another insider gave his opinion on the matter as well. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, while on The Pat McAfee Show, said he believes it’s more likely that Taylor gets traded than he stays with the Colts.

While this sounds like a bit more of Rapoport’s opinion than a straight-up report of news, he’s likely basing his opinion on the information he’s gathered. It’s not insignificant that Rapoport is leaning toward that belief.

Rapoport also went on to say that he believes the contract Taylor would receive after the potential trade is north of $12 million annually.

It’s been heavily reported that the Miami Dolphins have engaged in talks with the Colts, even going so far as to make a few offers for Taylor. Another team has seemingly entered the mix as well, but it’s unclear who that is entering Tuesday morning.

This situation certainly will be dominating headlines throughout the day Tuesday, and we’ll keep you updated with the latest news regarding the star running back.

Are Broncos interested in trading for Colts RB Jonathan Taylor?

Another team may be emerging as potential trade suitors for Jonathan Taylor.

With Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor currently available on the trading market, there appears to be strong interest from teams around the league.

While the Miami Dolphins have been actively reported among the teams with the strongest interest, another team in the AFC may be emerging as well.

The Denver Broncos.

Denver Sports reporter Cecil Lammey said Wednesday during an appearance on 104.3 The Fan that the Broncos were among the “most interested” teams when it comes to potential trades for Taylor.

For what it’s worth, Benjamin Allbright of KOA Radio had different tune, stating the Broncos “have no interest in paying the draft picks price or salary cost for Taylor.”

So, who actually knows how interested the Broncos would be in a trade for Taylor? With that said, they were in on the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes earlier this offseason.

Broncos Wire’s Jon Heath also believes it would be surprising to see Denver making that hypothetical trade considering the state of their backfield. That is unless a certain starter would be including in the trade.

It would be surprising to see the Broncos trade high picks for Taylor and then give him a massive contract when they already having Javonte Williams and just signed Samaje Perine this offseason. The only scenario that might make sense would be including Williams in a hypothetical trade with the Colts.

Even with the Colts wrapping up their preseason this week, this will be the dominating storyline.

Only time will tell whether the Broncos truly have an interest in making a trade for the star running back.

Fantasy football: Indianapolis Colts offensive breakdown

Few aspects of Indy’s offense will breed fantasy familiarity in 2023.

While he didn’t exactly dazzle in his professional debut — completing just seven of 12 passes for 67 yards with an interception — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, who was named the starter last week, still took a seat on the bench during the second preseason contest against the Chicago Bears.

The fourth overall pick has athleticism that makes Richardson an intriguing QB2, but what does starting the rookie from Week 1 on mean for the rest of the Colts offense? Perhaps more importantly, a recent development in the running backs room may have more pronounced impact on this offense.

Colts seeking early-round pick in potential Jonathan Taylor trade?

According to an ESPN report, the Colts would seek early-round draft compensation in a potential Jonathan Taylor trade.

The Indianapolis Colts and star Jonathan Taylor are embroiled in a tense battle regarding his future with the team.

All indications from his camp lean towards wanting him to be one of, if not the, NFL’s top-paid running backs. The Colts believe he should be compensated market value, and consequently, they are not inclined to make that move happen now.

Both owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard wish to revisit that conversation later.

Both sides’ back-and-forth actions and responses ultimately led to Taylor making a formal trade request out of Indy. For the Colts to consider that, it appears they are seeking early-round draft compensation, according to Stephen Holder of ESPN.

The Colts, according to a source with direct knowledge of the conversations, would be seeking an early-round draft pick. That might be tough given the current climate about the value of running backs.

Transparently, a move like this will likely be hard to make happen. The current value of running backs across the league has significantly dropped over the last year. Additionally, the contract would have to be of substantial value for the team acquiring him. This could make it unappealing to running back needy teams across the league.

Colts owner Jim Irsay told the media the team doesn’t have plans to trade the star running back.

Head Coach Shane Steichen remains hopeful he will play this season, but what will happen with the Colts and Taylor is unknown as the two sides continue to dig in their heels.

Everything we know about Colts, Jonathan Taylor trade situation

Here’s everything we know so far about the drama surrounding Jonathan Taylor and the Colts.

It seems each year covering the Indianapolis Colts comes with some sort of dramatic storyline. The 2023 storyline has now turned into following the Jonathan Taylor trade market and now a broken relationship between the team and the star running back.

Whether anything comes from this is anyone’s guess. Taylor could be traded by the time the season rolls around or the two sides could somehow mend this broken relationship and find a way forward together. It’s the NFL. Anything can happen.

As much as we’d love to simply focus on the development of rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson or the return of former All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard, the situation regarding Taylor will take precedence in almost all cases.

So to get you caught up on everything that’s transpired over the last week or so, here’s everything we know about the entire ordeal.

Declining RB market not a good match for Jonathan Taylor trade

Even if the Colts wanted to trade Jonathan Taylor, the market may not be strong enough to make a deal worth it.

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor wants out, and while the front office may not want to trade the star player away, they would be wise to listen to offers.

However, those offers may not be what the Colts are looking for in terms of compensation, which means the two sides are likely heading toward a standstill.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, some general managers around the league see the running back market declining even more following the 2023 season, which would be a problem for Taylor and his camp.

Though owner Jim Irsay said the Colts are not trading Taylor, the NFL is unpredictable. The Colts would be wise to listen to offers, but pulling the trigger on a deal that doesn’t match Taylor’s value would be a waste of time.

Consequently, other teams aren’t going to pay a premium for a one-year rental who is coming off an offseason procedure that currently has him on the PUP list.

Gone are the days of trading first-round picks for running backs. The Colts, at best, would hope for a deal like the one that sent Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers last fall. In that trade, the Panthers received second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a fifth-round pick in 2024.

The team trading for Taylor also likely will have to work out a contract extension, which has been the root of the issue this entire time.

The problem for Taylor is that the Colts have the leverage. Sure, his talents would be greatly missed. But because he’s under contract, the team can fine him $40,000 per day for every unexcused absence if he decides to hold out, according to the collective bargaining agreement. Any player who has unexcused missed mandatory meetings or practices is subject to a maximum fine of $14,650.

This doesn’t apply to the situation right now as he’s on the PUP list. But once he’s activated, a holdout or hold-in would be costly for Taylor.

There is no denying that Taylor is a great running back, a fantastic teammate and a wonderful person. But the running back market is crashing, and there may not be an end in sight to this dilemma unless something changes from either side.
