Watch: Jonathan Taylor proves the wheel route is undefeated

People love to joke that in football, the wheel route is undefeated. Rookie RB Jonathan Taylor provides the latest example.

There is a saying on #FootballTwitter that the wheel route is undefeated.

Rookie running back Jonathan Taylor provided yet more evidence in support of that position on this touchdown catch against the Houston Texans:

Facing a fourth down the Indianapolis Colts align with Philip Rivers in the shotgun. They run a Mesh-Sit concept here, with crossing routes underneath and a deeper receiver curling over the middle of the field. Taylor, aligned next to Rivers in the backfield, runs the wheel route.

The Colts catch the Houston Texans in man coverage, and the traffic created underneath with the crossing routes leaves Taylor wide open.

This is a beautiful job by the Colts setting this play up, as their first touchdown of the game came on a Mesh concept with Rivers hitting T.Y. Hilton for the score:

Wheel route remains undefeated.

College football all-time great, Wisconsin Badger great and current Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor spent no time making his presence known at the NFL level.

Through his first four games–three of which as the starter after a season-ending injury to Marlon Mack–Taylor has logged 65 carries, 250 yards, 2 rushing touchdowns and 10 receptions for 90 receiving yards.

Today against the Cleveland Browns Taylor continued the solid start to his career, finding the end zone on a short fourth down play midway through the first quarter.

His stat line with 6:47 left in the third quarter stands at 8 carries for 37 yards and the touchdown.

Former Badgers have made their presence known all throughout the NFL this season, Taylor being one of them. For Badger fans everywhere that wish they saw a fourth year of the running back in a Badger uniform, him rushing for NFL touchdowns is a good consolation prize.
