NEW: Jayden Daniels earns first quarterback award of the season

The best player in college football has earned his first award for his 2023 performance.

The best player in college football has earned his first award for his 2023 performance. [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has been named the winner of the 2023 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Daniels has been a superstar for the LSU Tigers this season as he has thrown for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 12 games. He has also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Daniels finds his name in the mix for a plethora of awards, including the Heisman Trophy. He finds himself in a battle with former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix for that prestigious award. The last LSU player to win the Golden Arm Award was [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] in 2019.

Per the award’s website, “the Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the top upperclassmen quarterback by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation encapsulates all that is positive in college sports. The award acknowledges performance on the field for sure, but it goes beyond completion percentage and touchdown strikes. The award values character, citizenship, integrity, and those who honor the game.”

Dillon Gabriel named a finalist for two prestigious awards

Dillon Gabriel has had a great season for the Sooners so far and that has landed him as a finalist of two awards.

[autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] has been as good as advertised this season for the Oklahoma Sooners. He’s currently completing a career-high 71.4% of his passes for 2,302 yards, 19 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

His play this season has earned him a spot as a finalist for two prestigious awards; the [autotag]Davey O’Brien[/autotag] QB Class of 2023 and the Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Gabriel is a member of the 35-player Davey O’Brien QB Class making him an official candidate for the 2023 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, which will be presented on Dec. 8, 2023.

A Sooner has won the Davey O’Brien award six times. [autotag]Billy Sims[/autotag] won the first one in 1978 when it was given to the most outstanding player and not just the most outstanding quarterback. [autotag]Jason White[/autotag] won the award twice, in 2003 and 2004. [autotag]Sam Bradford[/autotag] won the award in 2008. [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] in 2017, and [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag] in 2018.

He was announced as a top-10 finalist for the [autotag]Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award[/autotag] on Tuesday. That award is given to the top quarterback who is a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. White is the lone Sooner to win the award.

Gabriel is certainly deserving of both of those awards. Per a release from the University of Oklahoma, He ranks in the top 10 nationally in points responsible for per game (20.2; third), total offense (324.5 yards per game; fifth), pass completion percentage (.714; eighth), passing efficiency rating (169.6; ninth) and passing touchdowns (19; 10th). He also leads the Big 12 in passing offense (278.8 yards per game; 13th nationally) and yards per pass attempt (9.1; 14th nationally).

He has a big opportunity to build upon his stellar season with a rivalry game this weekend.

Sean Clifford named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list

Penn State QB Sean Clifford lands on another college football award watch list for 2021

Penn State starting quarterback Sean Clifford was named to another watch list on Thursday, with the start of the 2021 college football season continuing to inch closer and closer. Clifford was named to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Unlike some other notable passing awards, the Golden Arm Award is specifically for college football seniors or upperclassmen scheduled to graduate with their class. So no freshmen or sophomores are going to be among the watch-list candidates.

Clifford is set to begin his third season as Penn State’s starting quarterback. He will enter 2021 looking to shrug off some negative moments from the 2020 season. With Mike Yurcich coaching him and calling the offense, Clifford could be set to have his best season yet as a Penn State quarterback.

Last year’s recipient of the Golden Arm award was Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. Other past winners of the award include Joe Burrow, Marcus Mariota, Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, and Carson Palmer. No Penn State player has managed to win the award, which was first presented in 1987 to Syracuse’s Don McPherson.
