ESPN predicts the winner of Tuesday’s Auburn vs. Mississippi State game

Auburn will be without its star player on Tuesday. How does that affect ESPN’s forecast of the game?

The Auburn Tigers will be cautiously optimistic heading into Tuesday’s game with Mississippi State.

Auburn, who just claimed the No. 1 spot in both the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and the AP poll, will be without its star forward on Tuesday as [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] is listed as “out” for the showdown with No. 18 Mississippi State.

How does Broome’s injury status affect Auburn’s win probability? According to ESPN, the Tigers still have a strong chance to claim another key SEC win.

ESPN’s matchup predictor has given Auburn an 86.5% chance to beat Mississippi State on Tuesday night in Neville Arena. An Auburn win would extend the Tigers’ win streak to nine games and improve its record against SEC competition to 4-0.

The Tigers hold a slight advantage over Mississippi State in points per game, 86.6-83.9. The margin is even slimmer in points allowed per game. Auburn allows 66.0 points per game while Mississippi State gives up 68.3. Both teams haul in 38 rebounds per game, and the Tigers connect on nearly 3% more of its field goal attempts.

Josh Hubbard is the Bulldogs leading scorer at 17.0 points per game. Next in line for Auburn behind Broome is [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag], who enters Tuesday’s game with a 12.7 points per game average.

Is Johni Broome playing today? The latest update on Auburn’s star forward

The Auburn forward is dealing with an ankle injury. Here is the latest updates ahead of Auburn’s game vs. Mississippi State.

The No. 2 Auburn Tigers face No. 18 Mississippi State on Tuesday at Neville Arena. Will its star player be in the starting lineup?

[autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] suffered an ankle injury in Auburn’s 66-63 win over South Carolina last Saturday. Auburn head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] initially thought the injury was significant and that he could miss Auburn’s important games coming up.

However, Auburn athletics revealed Sunday that an MRI indicated that Broome’s sprained ankle would not need surgery to repair.

No surgery is great news for Broome and the Auburn basketball program. However, will he be able to suit up for Auburn’s top-25 showdown with Mississippi State? Here’s the latest update regarding Broome’s ankle injury ahead of Tuesday’s game at Neville Arena.

Johni Broome injury update

An MRI revealed that Auburn forward Johni Broome will not need surgery for the sprained ankle he sustained in Auburn’s 66-63 win at South Carolina last Saturday. However, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl says that Broome will be unavailable for the Tigers’ game with No. 18 Mississippi State on Tuesday at Neville Arena.

How long will Broome be out?

Although Broome will not need surgery, there is still no set timetable for Broome’s return. Broome was in a boot and using a scooter at practice on Monday, which is cause to believe that Broome could miss a few more games.

Auburn depth chart

Pearl will look to Chaney Johnson to fill Broome’s space in the starting lineup. Johnson has proven to be a player worthy of filling the shoes of Broome, especially in Auburn’s win over Georgia State in December. Broome exited the game early due to a shoulder injury, leaving Chaney to pick up his production. Chaney went on to score 26 points and collect eight rebounds in the Tigers’ 100-59 victory.

Johnson averages 10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 22.6 minutes per game off the bench.

Auburn finally improves spot in AP Poll

The Tigers climbed to the top spot after six consecutive weeks as the second ranked team in the AP Poll.

For just the second time in school history, the Auburn Tigers have claimed the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll.

Auburn finally jumped SEC rival Tennessee this week following a pair of victories combined with a loss by the Volunteers. The Tigers, who had been ranked as the second-best team in the nation by AP voters since December 2, received 60 first-place votes.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers are now ranked No. 1 for the first time since February of 2022 when they spent four weeks as the top team in the country before late-season struggles led to a first-weekend exit in the NCAA Tournament. Unlike that iteration of the Tigers which was willed to the top spot by current NBA stars [autotag]Jabari Smith Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Walker Kessler[/autotag], these Tigers have widely been considered the deepest, most complete team in all of college basketball behind six players averaging double figures.

The best of those players, superstar forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], suffered an ankle injury in Auburn’s most recent victory over South Carolina. His status remains up in the air heading into the final stretch of the season, raising some questions as the whether Auburn will be able to cling to the top ranking for longer, or even as long, as it did in 2022.

Even without Broome the Tigers are undoubtedly one of the best teams in college basketball, which is something that was almost never said before Bruce Pearl’s tenure on the Plains. As for the remainder of the conference, Alabama (4) , Florida (5), Tennessee (6), and Kentucky (8) represent a laughably impressive half of the top 10. Texas A&M (11), Ole Miss (21), Georgia (23), and Tuesday’s opponent, Mississippi State (14) make up the remainder of SEC teams ranked among the top 25. Auburn is all but sure to be without Broome for Tuesday’s contest, creating an immediate test for the nation’s newest No. 1 ranked team.

Could Johni Broome be Auburn’s next first round pick?

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie has high hopes for Broome’s draft stock in his latest NBA mock draft.

Auburn forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] has had a phenomenal collegiate career and will be ready for the next step of his basketball journey next season.

In the latest NBA mock draft by The Athletic, Broome will head north to play for the Boston Celtics, who are projected to take Broome with the 28th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie was impressed with Broome’s performance at the NBA draft combine and believes he could easily find a way to perform well in the NBA.

He’s dominant on the interior as a post-up big and has also made 33 percent of his 2.5 3s per game over the last two seasons. Positionally, he’s elite, and he knows how to carve out space using his frame. He’s undersized for the center position in the NBA, but it’s hard to look at what he’s done and not envision a backup NBA center.

Earlier this month, John Hollinger of The Athletic included Broome in his list of “underrated 2025 NBA Draft prospects worth watching.” Hollinger says that Broome’s variety as a playmaker and impressive rebound rate are worthy enough to put him on the radar of several NBA scouts.

The date for the 2025 NBA draft will be announced at a later date.

Johni Broome update: The latest news surrounding the star forward’s ankle injury

Broome underwent an MRI on Sunday to access the severity of the ankle injury he suffered in Saturday’s win at South Carolina.

Auburn basketball may have won its game over South Carolina on Saturday to move to 3-0 in SEC play, but it lost its lifeblood in the process.

Forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] suffered an ankle injury in Auburn’s 66-63 win over South Carolina on Saturday. Head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] originally felt that Broome’s injury might be significant, which would cause him to miss several games. However, according to a statement from Auburn Athletics, a Sunday MRI revealed that the injury is not as serious as once thought.

“Auburn senior All-American Johni Broome underwent an MRI this morning which revealed a non-surgical, ankle sprain,” a press release from Auburn Athletics revealed Sunday.

Surgery not being needed for Broome is a great sign for Auburn basketball. However, the timetable for his return has yet to be announced. Broome leads the team in several categories including points (17.9), rebounds (10.7), and assists (3.2). Before his injury, Broome scored six points and hauled in three rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

How significant is Johni Broome’s injury?

Head coach Bruce Pearl provides an update on the injury Broome suffered in No. 2 Auburn’s win over South Carolina.

On Saturday, the No. 2 Auburn Tigers earned another key SEC win by taking down South Carolina, 66-63. However, one of their biggest stars exited the game with an ankle injury.

Auburn forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] exited Saturday’s game at South Carolina with an ankle injury that was serious enough to force his day to end early. Following the game, head coach Bruce Pearl shared an update with Jeff Goodman of Field of 68.

Early signs point to Broome’s injury being “significant”, which could lead to him missing a few games.

“That’s what we think,” Pearl said. “We will get tests tomorrow to make sure.”

Broome exited the game after 24 minutes of action. He scored six points, hauled in three rebounds, and blocked two shots before his untimely exit. If he were to miss significant time, Auburn would be without a crucial piece of its lineup. Broome brings 18.7 points and 11.2 rebounds of production to the Tigers lineup every game, which will be tough to replicate.

Auburn may look to [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag] to fill the void in Broome’s absence. Johnson is fifth on the team in points (10.1) and is second in field goal percentage (60.4%).

Cooper Flagg and Auburn’s Johni Broome locked in heated battle for KenPom Player of the Year

According to KenPom’s kPOY metric, Duke superstar Cooper Flagg has emerged as one of two major contenders for national awards.

Duke basketball freshman [autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag] has looked like a national player of the year throughout his first collegiate campaign.

The 6-foot-9 freshman has averaged 17.5 points, including at least 19 in six of the Blue Devils’ last eight games, with 8.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks. In his three games since the holiday break, he’s made 62.2% of his shots from the field and five of his eight 3-point looks (62.5%), and he’s helped Duke win nine straight games for a 13-2 start.

KenPom’s kPOY metric backs up the historic level of play. As of January 10, Flagg boasts a 2.559 kPOY rating. Only six players have finished about 2.0 since the metric’s inception in 2010-11, and only three have finished higher than Flagg’s current mark.

The only issue? Auburn Tigers star Johni Broome currently sports a 2.610 kPOY rating to narrowly beat out Flagg.

The Auburn forward also holds the edge in counting stats with 18.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He’s put up 10 double-doubles and 10 20-point outings in Auburn’s first 15 games, and he only played two minutes in one of the other five.

However, the Blue Devils did hang the Tigers their only loss of the season last month as Flagg ended up with 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks to Broome’s 20 points, 12 boards, and three dimes.

Any awards conversations will likely come down to the wire. The SEC boasts nine different teams within the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll while the ACC only offers Duke, so Broome could make a larger impression down the line but appears more likely to face a slip-up or two.

Auburn moves back past Duke Blue Devils for No. 1 spot in the KenPom basketball rankings

The Duke Blue Devils haven’t played a game since they took the top spot in the KenPom rankings, but Auburn retook the No. 1 line.

The Duke Blue Devils haven’t taken the court again since they jumped atop the KenPom rankings on Wednesday morning, but they slid back behind the Auburn Tigers on Friday to fall back to No. 2.

The Tigers beat the Texas Longhorns by five points on Tuesday night, improving to 14-1 for the season. Other results around the country changed the math for opponent adjustments, however, giving Auburn a +36.76 efficiency margin per 100 possessions compared to Duke’s +36.67.

The Houston Cougars (+33.15) are the only other team above +31.0 so far this season. In fact, no team finished with a +36.6 efficiency margin or higher since the 2014-15 Kentucky Wildcats.

The Blue Devils and Tigers look set to keep trading the top spot thanks to their dominance on one side of the court. Auburn’s offense leads the nation with 131.2 points per 100 possessions, almost seven more than any other team, while the Blue Devils pace the country with 86.0 points allowed.

Auburn’s only loss, of course, came at Cameron Indoor Stadium last month, and the Blue Devils are the only team inside the top eight on both offense and defense.
