Recap: Auburn passes final road test, takes down Missouri

Recap: Auburn passes final road test, takes down Missouri

The Auburn Tigers are officially on pace for a two-day bye in the SEC Tournament.

Bruce Pearl’s squad took care of business on the road at Missouri on Tuesday night by handing Mizzou its 17th-straight SEC loss.

The home team gave Auburn all it could handle in the first half thanks to some solid play by stars Sean East II and Nick Honor, but a quick start to the second half from [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and the away Tigers gave Auburn some much-needed breathing room.

Broome ended up second among Auburn scorers with 15 points in the win, while front-court mate Jaylin Williams provided his best output since returning from injury a week ago by scoring a team-high 17 points on an efficient 6/8 from the field.

Guard [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] was also a star once again. Interestingly, the junior played a team-high 28 minutes in the win. It looks like head coach Bruce Pearl is trusting his most electric stat-stuffing guard to soak up the minutes lost with [autotag]Lior Berman[/autotag] out for the season.

Auburn’s win was heavily expected, but it is still worth commending nonetheless. The Tigers now control their own destiny in the hunt for a top 4 seed in the SEC Tournament when they finish the season at Neville Arena on Saturday against Georgia.

As for Missouri, the Tigers nightmare regular season will come to a close in Baton Rouge on Saturday. They’ll have to run the table in Nashville against higher seeds if they want to make it back to the NCAA Tournament.

Auburn fans are celebrating the Tigers’ return to the win column!

The No. 11 Auburn Tigers returned to the win column on Saturday by knocking off Mississippi State at home, 78-63, on Saturday in Neville Arena.

Auburn was able to avenge a January loss to the Bulldogs by shooting 50% from the field and 47% from three-point territory. That proved to be important as Mississippi State managed to out-rebound Auburn and score two more points in the paint than the Tigers.

Four players reached double-digits in points, led by [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag]’s 17-point showing. [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag] added 15 points while [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] scored 10 each.

Recap: Auburn hangs on to beat Georgia in Athens

Forward Chad Baker-Mazara may be one of the newest Tigers on the roster, but the junior was a leader on both ends of the floor in Athens.

No. 14 Auburn came into Saturday’s matchup against Georgia with one major question mark. After a week off, head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] had to figure out how his Tigers were going to replace the production of injured star forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag].

Pearl got the answer to that question almost instantly as Auburn rolled to a 97-76 win over Georgia at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.

Forward [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] may be one of the newest Tigers on the roster, but the junior was a leader on both ends of the floor in Athens.

Baker-Mazara scored or assisted on 17 of the Tigers’ first 27 points as they got out to an early 27-15 lead. From there, fellow first-year Tigers [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] and [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag] picked up the slack.

Holloway was particularly impressive, as his 5 threes on the road were more than the freshmen had made over his last four SEC games combined. Johnson made an equal impact by scoring 16 points in his first start of the season replacing the aforementioned Williams.

Although Auburn never trailed in the contest, the lead did get as low as three points when the Bulldogs bit back early in the second half off the back of guard Noah Thomasson.

UGA’s best player may have made the game interesting but it was ultimately Auburn’s best performer that took over in the win. Following the Thomasson led run, junior [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] scored 7 straight to balloon the lead back to double-digits.

The SEC Player of the Year candidate seemed quite all night but managed to finish with yet another double-double, scoring 16 points and adding 13 rebounds,

Broome’s 16 points tied Chaney Johnson for second on the team behind Baker-Mazara’s 25.

Auburn’s 97-76 win proved [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad can look dominant amid injury issues. If the Tigers can click like this once Williams gets healthy, the second or third weekend of the NCAA Tournament looks more and more likely.

With that being said, the Tigers will have their hands full when they take on a very good Tennessee team on Wednesday night in Knoxville.

As for Georgia, the Bulldogs will travel to LSU on Tuesday night with a chance to get back on track.

Auburn has 80% chance to beat Georgia on Saturday

ESPN feels confident that a well-rested Auburn squad will earn a road win in Athens on Saturday.

The good news? Auburn is well-rested after taking the midweek off. The bad news? They will be without [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] on Saturday.

Despite the injury news, ESPN still feels that No. 14 Auburn will earn a road win at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens on Saturday. According to the latest data from the ESPN matchup predictor, the Tigers have an 80.5% chance to beat Georgia.

In comparison, Auburn holds an advantage over Georgia in every statistical category. Auburn scores an average of 82.2 points per game while allowing 67 points. As for the Bulldogs, they score 76.1 points per game and allow 74 points. Auburn’s leading scorer, [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], scores four points more per game than Georgia’s leader, Jabri Abdur-Rahim.

ESPN gives Saturday’s matchup between Auburn and Georgia a matchup-quality score of 78.8 and predicts Auburn to beat Georgia by 9.3 points. It is also the fourth-best matchup of the day in the SEC. Saturday’s game between No. 13 Alabama and No. 17 Kentucky in Lexington is the top game in the conference, and the second-best overall behind No. 7 Duke-Wake Forest.

College Sports Wire mentions Johni Broome as possible SEC Player of the Year

Auburn’s star has a chance to become the Tigers’ first SEC Player of the Year of this century.

College Sports Wire just released its 5 late-season candidates for the 2023-24 SEC Player of the Year award. Among the list is Auburn star forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag].

The junior is joined by Tennessee star guard Dalton Knecht, Alabama guard Mark Sears, Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves, and Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell.

Broome is notably the only front-court player on the list which is somewhat of an outlier considering the winner of the award has been a forward or center 7 out of the last 10 seasons.

It’s easy to see why Broome should be a favorite for the conference’s most prestigious individual honor at the end of the year. Auburn’s star has been nothing short of sensational in 2023-2024.

The 21-year-old’s 16.1 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game are both improvements from his first season on the Plains while his field goal and 3-point percentage have also seen significant improvements.

Broome has also become a leader both emotionally and on the court for the Tigers. Bruce Pearl’s offense clearly runs through him and fellow forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag]. Broome’s assist numbers are almost up a full assist per game this season because of that.

While Broome’s individual numbers are superb, it is going to be a difficult task to usurp Dalton Knecht or Mark Sears for the award considering they both are averaging 20+ points per game for teams ahead of Auburn in the standings.

If Broome were to make an improbable run at the honor, he would be the first Tiger to win SEC Player of the Year since forward Chris Porter in 1999.

Jaylin Williams injury update: Forward’s knee injury “non-season ending”

Jaylin Williams may have avoided a major knee injury.

Auburn forward Jaylin Williams was forced to the locker room halfway through the second half of his team’s 70-59 loss to Kentucky on Saturday evening.

Originally, the injury looked gruesome enough to possibly indicate a “season-ender” for Williams, but the senior has reportedly avoided any major injury after Sunday morning’s MRI came back clean.

Jeff Goodman of “The Field of 68” reported Williams’s knee injury is “not as bad as initially feared,” and the senior is “expected to return before the end of the season.”

Goodman didn’t specify whether he meant regular season or further, but considering Williams is one of Auburn’s best players it would make sense for Bruce Pearl’s staff to be patient with him.

Pearl’s comments after last night’s loss reinforce that sentiment, “He and Johni [Broome] are our two best players… We think it’s something. Not just a bang. He had a pivot. We’ll do an MRI tomorrow and then we’ll take a look at it.”

Although the senior seemingly avoiding a major injury, it would make sense for Auburn to hold him out until at least the start of the SEC Tournament to make sure the forward is 100% ready. By then, he’ll have at least one game, and most likely two or three, to shake off the rust ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

In the meantime forwards Chris Moore, Chaney Johnson, and Dylan Cardwell will be asked to carry a bigger load on both ends of the floor. It is also possible we see Bruce Pearl opt to play [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] closer to 35 minutes a game down the stretch instead of the 27-30 minutes we’ve been seeing from him.

Recap: Auburn falls to Kentucky in worst performance of season

The wheels fell off for the Auburn Tigers on Saturday night. Bruce Pearl’s team was outplayed for 40 straight minutes against Kentucky.

The No. 12 Auburn Tigers have been a wagon all season long at Neville Arena. On Saturday, that wagon lost all four wheels, headed downhill, and crashed into “Village Dining.”

Auburn’s offense which had been so potent at home all year mustered just 59 points against a sub-par, at best, No. 20 Kentucky defense. Stars [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] were largely ineffective, and the latter ultimately was forced out of the game halfway through the second half due to injury in the Tigers 70-59 loss to the Wildcats.

Frankly, all Tigers other than guard [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] were virtual no-shows in front of the College GameDay crowd.

The offensive issues were enough to sink the Tigers against a solid Kentucky offense that did just enough on the road. Guards Austin Reeves and Rob Dillingham weren’t fantastic, but the duo was able to draw foul after foul, frustrating Auburn’s perimeter defense for 40 minutes.

That frustration obviously boiled over on the offensive end for players such as [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag] (3/10 from the field), Tre Donaldson (0/3 from the field), and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] (1/5 from the field). Holloway in particular continued his brutal stretch. The freshmen is now just two for his last 21 from three-point range on the season.

Auburn’s loss is tragic for a variety of reasons, the most glaring being they now trail rival Alabama by 1.5 games in the SEC with just five contests remaining. With a road game against No.9 Tennessee in Knoxville still on the schedule, Auburn’s chances of capturing a regular season SEC Championship are extremely slim.

On the bright side, the Tigers will have a full week to regroup before they travel to Athens to take on a mediocre Georgia team next Saturday.

As for Kentucky, the Wildcats now have life in the SEC hunt, especially with games against LSU and in Rupp Arena against Alabama next week.
