Saints to sign former Raiders first-round safety Johnathan Abram

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Saints plan to sign former Raiders first-round safety Johnathan Abram, adding more depth to the secondary, via @DillySanders:

The New Orleans Saints plan to sign veteran safety Johnathan Abram after a physical on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Abram has spent four years in the league across three different teams after being drafted in 2019 by the then-Oakland Raiders. He battled multiple shoulder injuries throughout his stay before getting waived in Nov. 2022.

Two days after he was signed by the Green Bay Packers, who he played with for two games before getting waived again. Abram was then picked up by the Seattle Seahawks at the end of November, where he would finish the season out. They didn’t re-sign him once his contract expired on March 13 at the start of the new league year.

Abram has 267 career tackles, three interceptions, and eight tackles for a loss. He has been noted to be poor in coverage, and Pro Football Focus graded him at 47.1 in that area for the 2022 season. He looks to be a solid box safety depth option at best while maybe offering some help on special teams. The Saints have brought in other veteran safeties like Ugo Amadi and Lonnie Johnson Jr. this offseason while re-signing J.T. Gray, so he’ll be competing with them and Smoke Monday for a roster spot.

Seahawks News: Multiple teams request interviews with assistant coaches, fines

Here’s all the latest Seattle news from the weekend.

The Seahawks have had multiple teams request interviews with assistant coaches over the last few days.

Here’s all the latest Seattle news from the weekend.

49ers outscore Seahawks 25-6 after Johnathan Abram’s dirty tackle of Deebo Samuel

The Seahawks had a lead over the 49ers in the wild-card round. Then, Johnathan Abram made Deebo Samuel mad. You don’t want to do that.

You generally assume that all NFL players come into any postseason game at the very height of personal intensity. That said, there are actions on the field that can ramp things up for a player, or for an entire team.

The Seattle Seahawks discovered this the hard way in their 41-23 wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The underdog Seahawks actually led 17-16 at the half, and then, safety Johnathan Abram poked the wrong bear at the wrong time.

With 10:26 left in the third quarter, Brock Purdy threw a short pass to Deebo Samuel, who trucked 18 yards after the catch for a 21-yard gain, taking the ball from the Seattle 37-yard line to the Seattle 16.

That wasn’t the problem. The problem was what Abram did after the play was over — he tugged on Samuel’s left leg when the play was obviously over. For whatever reason, Abram was not flagged for the extracurricular incident.

If you want some more background here, Samuel had missed Weeks 15-17 of the 2022 season with knee and ankle injuries. So, you can imagine that he was unhappy with this move. You can also understand why Samuel’s teammates were a bit put out.

That caused a fight between the two teams, who don’t really like each other anyway.

After the game, several 49ers players — including Samuel himself — pointed to this as the difference in the game.

As for Samuel, he got his revenge on the field, as his 49ers outscored the Seahawks 25-6 following that play.

With Ryan Neal out, Seahawks will rotate these 2 safeties vs. Chiefs

Unfortunately, Neal has been ruled out for tomorrow’s game against the Chiefs due to a knee injury.

Seahawks fans have enjoyed several pleasant surprises this season, the most recent being the play of backup safety Ryan Neal. He’s performed so well that he’s now the highest-graded safety in the NFL this season according to Pro Football Focus.

Unfortunately, Neal has been ruled out for tomorrow’s game against the Chiefs due to a knee injury. Asked yesterday what the plan was, coach Pete Carrol said the team would rotate Teez Tabor and Johnathan Abram at the safety spot opposite Quandre Diggs.

One can see why Carroll likes Abram’s game – his physicality and range in particular make him valuable near the box. However, coverage is far from his strong suit. Meanwhile, Tabor has never really caught on after the Lions picked him in the second round of the 2017 draft and this is his first season playing safety.

Going against Patrick Mahomes this is pretty far from an ideal situation.

Looking ahead, Neal will be a restricted free agent next year so it’ll be easy for the Seahawks to bring him back. The question is whether or not he could replace Jamal Adams, who hasn’t been able to stay on the field.

Former Raiders 1st round pick S Johnathan Abram claimed by Seahawks

Johnathan Abram is joining his 3rd team in 3 weeks

Three weeks ago, Johnathan Abram was still a member of the Raiders. The team that selected him in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Now he is joining his third NFL team.

When Abram was waived on November 8, the Packers claimed him off waivers. He lasted two games in Green Bay before being waived again. This time, it’s the Seahawks who claimed him, putting him on his third team in three weeks time.

The former 27th overall pick had started nearly every game in which he appeared with the Las Vegas Raiders. Even two weeks before he was waived, he was still the team’s full time starter. But ultimately the team decided they preferred what veteran Duron Harmon gave them alongside second-year safety Tre’von Moehrig and cut ties with Abram.

Even if Abram had not been waived, it was his final season with the Raiders after the team opted not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. He didn’t make it that far. And even a change of scenery has not helped him to find his place. Third team’s the charm?

Seahawks claim former Raiders S Johnathan Abram off waivers

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Seahawks have claimed Johnathan Abram off waivers from the Packers.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Seattle Seahawks have claimed Johnathan Abram off waivers from the Green Bay Packers.

Abram (6-foot-0, 205 pounds) was a first-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2019 NFL draft. He came into the league with plenty of hype but only played one game as a rookie before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He showed promise in his second year, posting two interceptions and six pass breakups. However, that appeared to be his peak. After 36 mostly-disappointing games, the Raiders released Abram three weeks ago and he was picked up by the Packers. He played two games in Green Bay before he was waived.

Seattle may be short-handed at safety this week with Ryan Neal’s status up in the air due to an elbow injury. If Neal can’t play then expect Abram to be active on Sunday against the LA Rams.

Packers waiving safety Johnathan Abram

The Packers will waive safety Johnathan Abram from the 53-man roster, per NFL Network.

Less than three weeks after claiming him off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders, the Green Bay Packers are set to waive veteran safety Johnathan Abram from the 53-man roster, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The Packers claimed Abram on Nov. 10.

Abram played one defensive snap and 28 total special teams snaps in games against the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans but was inactive as a healthy scratch for Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Packers actually elevated safety Innis Gaines from the practice squad in favor of Abram against the Eagles.

Abram produced two tackles but also committed three penalties while in Green Bay.

The Packers roster has five other safeties: Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Dallin Leavitt and rookie Tariq Carpenter. All five were active against the Eagles.

Abram was a first-round pick of the Raiders in 2019. He played in 36 career games with the Raiders before being waived and eventually claimed by the Packers.

Should The Eagles have interest in claiming Johnathan Abram ?

The Green Bay Packers are waiving former first-round pick Johnathan Abram and with teams stocking up on depth, should the Philadelphia Eagles have interest?

Johnathan Abram is looking for another team for the second time this season, as Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Packers are waiving the former first-round pick.

With their playoff hopes dwindling, Green Bay appears ready to develop safeties Dallin Leavitt, Tariq, and Carpenter, behind starters, Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.

Abram has logged two tackles since being Claimed by Green Bay on November 9 after Las Vegas released the safety after being unable to find a trade partner.

Philadelphia will be without star safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and only have Reed Blankenship, K’Von Wallace, and Andre Chachere on the depth chart as replacements.

A star out of Mississippi State, Abram had slipped on the Raiders’ depth chart behind Duron Harmon and rookie Trevon Moehrig-Woodard.

Abram had a career-high 116 total tackles with four passes defended and an interception during 14 appearances in 2021, but his play slipped dramatically in 2022.

Abram has 40 total tackles and one pass defended through 12 games this season, and as a fourth-year player, he’ll be subject to waivers rather than outright release.

What are the Packers getting in new S Johnathan Abram?

A quick scouting report on new Packers S Johnathan Abram, who was claimed off waivers on Thursday.

The Green Bay Packers officially claimed safety Johnathan Abram off of waivers on Thursday. He will wear No. 44 with the Packers.

What are the Packers getting in Abram, a first-round pick in 2019 who was released by the Las Vegas Raiders this week?

Brandon Carwile of Packers Wire dove into his potential fit here. He sees Abram as an in-the-box safety or nickel linebacker. Think Josh Jones 2.0.

Overall, Abram (5-11, 205) is an experienced (36 games, 34 starts) and physical safety who will probably help immediately on special teams.

“He can run, he’s a physical player,” special teams coach Rich Bisaccia said Thursday.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in 2019, Abram ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds, hit 33.5″ in the vertical leap, covered 9-8 in the broad jump and completed 16 reps in the bench press. His Relative Athletic Score as a safety is 7.01, a mostly average score brought down by below average height and explosiveness.

Marcus Mosher of Raiders Wire helped provide the rest of the scouting report.

“He’s a pretty physical tackler. But not someone you want in space or in man-to-man coverage. He does have a pretty good feel for how to blitz and isn’t afraid to mix it up with much bigger players. His best role is probably as a No. 4 safety and a core special teams player. But the Raiders were forced to play him due to his first-round status,” Mosher told Packers Wire.

Over his four seasons with the Raiders, Abram played 2,282 total snaps. He produced 63 “stops,” or a tackle constituting an offensive failure, but also missed 42 tackles. In coverage, he’s allowed 76.5 percent completions and 11 touchdowns with a passer rating of 118.0. He also committed nine penalties, including three unnecessary roughness penalties in 2020.

In terms of alignment, Abram played over 1,000 snaps in the box or on the edge, highlighting his ability against the run and as a blitzer.

Abram has also played over 200 snaps on special teams.

Any optimism about a career revival in Green Bay?

“I think a change in scenery and expectations could do him well,” Mosher said. “A small role on defense plus special teams is how he could resurrect his career.”

It’s possible the Packers could experiment with subpackages that have Abram in the box in nickel, or with Abram at safety with Darnell Savage down in the slot. Bisaccia, his former coach in Las Vegas, will also eventually work him into groups on special teams.

Abram has one year left on his rookie contract. He’ll be a free agent following the 2022 season, meaning the Packers have eight regular-season games to see what they have in the 2019 first-round pick.
