USC player who transferred from UCLA reacts to Jay Toia entering the portal

Jay Toia went from USC to UCLA. John Humphrey went from UCLA to USC. Humphrey reacted to Toia’s transfer.

The transfer portal is creating some fascinating stories at USC football and elsewhere. One of the plot points USC fans are focused on is the twisting saga of Jay Toia, the defensive tackle who transferred from USC to UCLA but has now re-entered the portal. USC’s John Humphrey transferred from UCLA to join D’Anton Lynn with the Trojans. Humphrey reacted to Toia’s announcement that he is going back into the portal. Could a Toia return to the Trojans be in the works? USC needs defensive tackles, and Toia would be a natural fit.

UW Huskies Wire has said that Washington should make a run at Toia in the transfer portal.

UCLA Wire had more on Toia:

Initially starting his career at USC, where he saw no playing time, the 6’3″, 325 lb Toia transferred to UCLA in 2021. The junior lineman totaled 66 tackles in his career with the Bruins and added two sacks and a forced fumble.

“Given that the Murphy Twins, Laiatu Latu, and Darius Muasau have all left for the NFL Draft, Toia’s exit from the program delivers another blow to the UCLA defensive line.

“Lacking veteran talent and leadership up front on defense, Toia’s timing does not bode well for the newly-minted Big Ten Bruins, where ground-and-pound football rules.”

Now we get to see if Toia is headed back to USC.

USC won’t have cornerback available for April 20 spring game

John Humphrey will miss the spring game for USC.

The USC football spring game is this coming Saturday, April 20. There are a lot of interesting plot points and a lot of position battles to watch. USC fans who will come to the Los Angeles Coliseum will be eager to see how new coordinator D’Anton Lynn develops the Trojans’ defense. There are definitely a lot of defensive players to evaluate as the Trojans turn the page from the Alex Grinch era and try to make substantial improvements on that side of the ball. Unfortunately, cornerback John Humphrey won’t be one of them. Lincoln Riley said Humphrey will miss the rest of spring ball with an injury which required minor surgery.

John Humphrey is a transfer from UCLA. He is very familiar with D’Anton Lynn and his scheme. He should fit very well into the 2024 USC defense. If there was a player to miss the spring game, Humphrey does not represent as much of a setback as other players, precisely because he doesn’t need to be taught the Lynn scheme from scratch.

Is Kyle Ford transferring back to USC from UCLA?

Kyle Ford visited USC’s spring practice on Thursday. Everyone was — and is — talking about it.

Last year Kyle Ford shocked USC football fans when he transferred.  It wasn’t the fact that he wanted to get an opportunity to get more playing time, but where he wanted to do it. Kyle Ford stopped by USC’s fifth practice of spring camp on Thursday, which obviously gained a lot of attention. Is something about to happen?

Ford, if he does transfer back to USC in a few weeks (the spring portal window opens on April 16), would be the third Bruin this offseason to join (or in Ford’s case, rejoin) the Trojan roster. Both safety Kamari Ramsay and cornerback John Humphrey followed D’Anton Lynn from UCLA to USC.

Ford signed with the Trojans in 2019 after suffering a knee injury and missing the final five games of his senior season at Orange Lutheran. He played in just four games late in the year before suffering a second season-ending knee injury during the summer of 2020. He had limited receptions in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but saved his best for last. Late in the 2022 USC-UCLA game, Ford caught a fade pass from Caleb Williams for the game-winning touchdown.

There seemed to be no ill will with USC, and it is notable that Ford shared a moment with Lincoln Riley during this Trojan practice on Thursday. If the interest is mutual, USC could use another veteran receiver on the team with just six returning scholarship wide receivers and true freshman Xavier Jordan available in 2024. Of that group, only redshirt junior Kyron Hudson and the redshirt senior transfer from Tufts, Jaden Richardson, are upperclassmen.

Gators expecting visits from transfer portal athletes over the weekend

The Florida Gators are hosting several transfer portal players over the weekend before the spring semester begins.

The Florida football program is expecting a few marquee visits before class sessions begin on Monday, with several players in the transfer portal planning to see the UF campus.

Swamp247 staff writer Blake Aldermann reports that six players in the portal will be in Gainesville with different coaches seeing over certain positions.

Head coach Billy Napier has been filling voids on his coaching staff and put them right to work by recruiting transfer students. New assistant coach Will Harris has taken a focus on the Gators secondary, and one of his assignments will be talking up former UCLA Bruins cornerback John Humphrey.

The senior is already committed to the USC Trojans, but there is the possibility the Gators could pull off a flip. Humphrey has made 25 appearances for the Bruins, collecting two interceptions and six pass deflections.

Former Tulane Green Wave safety DJ Douglas is also scheduled to the Swamp over the weekend. Douglas is a two-time transfer after originally enrolling with the Alabama Crimson Tide back in 2019. The senior racked up 80 tackles in 31 appearances for the Green Wave and hauled in four interceptions.

The Florida Gators will look to add a second player to the trenches, and they’ll have the opportunity to do so when former Arkansas Razorback offensive lineman Devon Manuel comes to town to see what UF is all about. Manuel is uncommitted right now, but has another visit slated with the Missouri Tigers following his visit to Gainesville.

Even if the Gators do manage to land all the expected visiting prospects, there’s still a lot of work to do during the program’s rebuild into 2024.

Florida eyeing defensive back transfer committed to USC

The Florida Gators will host UCLA transfer defensive back John Humphrey even though he already committed to the USC Trojans.

Even though former UCLA cornerback [autotag]John Humphrey[/autotag] is committed to USC, the Florida Gators are hosting him on a visit next Wednesday, according to a report from Gators Online.

Florida’s new secondary coach, Will Harris, is taking an aggressive approach in the portal, pursuing South Alabama safety Jaden Voisin and now Humphrey. Getting him to flip from his commitment to the Trojans will be tough, but a strong visit can change everything.

Humphrey came out of high as a four-star recruit in the class of 2020. He moved into a starting role for the Bruins in 2022 and totaled 70 tackles (48 solo) over his third and fourth years with the program.

He has one year of eligibility remaining thanks to the COVID bonus season granted to every player during the pandemic. Florida offers a clear path to playing time in the SEC, which could convince the Pac-12 standout to flip.

Humphrey committed to Southern California on Dec. 21

Another one: Former UCLA DB John Humphrey continues Bruin exodus to USC

D’Anton Lynn brought two members of UCLA’s 2023 defense to the USC roster for 2024.

Former UCLA Bruins defensive back John Humphrey has found his new home for the 2024 season, and he won’t have to relocate more than a few miles. He won’t have to jump on a plane and resettle in an entirely different part of the country. He can simply make the short hop from Westwood to Los Angeles. That’s right: Humphrey revealed on Thursday that he will remain in L.A., trading in his Bruins blue for the Cardinal and Gold of USC.

This is yet another big notch on the belt of D’Anton Lynn, the former UCLA defensive coordinator who has now brought two Bruin defensive players over to USC. Lynn is also responsible for bringing the Arnold brothers from Oregon State University down to USC. That’s four players Lynn has ushered to USC and the Trojans’ 2024 defense. This is the value everyone hoped Lynn could deliver to Lincoln Riley’s program, and Lynn has been on the job for only three weeks.

John Humphrey, the newest Trojan, spent the first four years of his college career with UCLA football. In those four years, he amassed a total of 76 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, and four passes defended.

Humphrey will be reunited with Lynn and safety Kamari Ramsey, the other member of the UCLA secondary who transferred to USC this week.

Colts held tryout for 5 players on Monday

Colts got a look at some players on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for five players on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Two of those players—WR J.J. Nelson and QB Jalen Morton—were signed to reserve/futures contracts on Monday. It was also reported before the transaction wire came out that Spring League MVP Bryan Scott had a workout as well.

The two other players to work out for the Colts on Monday were wide receivers Michael Walker and John Humphrey.

The Colts can sign as many players to futures contracts as they want as long as they stay within the 90-man roster limit. That doesn’t go into effect until Feb. 8 so the players on futures contracts will remain on the reserve list.
