Film study – what does John Forster add to the Rutgers football backfield?

Four-star recruit John Forster can add explosiveness to Rutgers backfield when he reports to campus in 2025.

Rutgers football added an explosive running back in New Jersey native John Forster last week. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound running back from Montvale, New Jersey, provides depth to the Scarlet Knights’ backfield when he reports to campus in 2025.

The St. Joseph Regional prospect has excellent vision and can read the field, analyze defensive formations, and find open spaces to run. Forster’s vision will allow him to shine under Rutgers Offensive Coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca’s zone running scheme, looking for cutbacks and holes in the defense.

His quickness and agility make it difficult for defenders to tackle him in the open field. Ciarrocca can use Forster’s athleticism anywhere on the field, aligning him in the backfield or at slot wide receiver.

Forster can shine in the Big Ten Conference because of his versatility as a running back. He can play effectively on every down and be used as a receiver on passing plays. He catches the ball well out of the backfield or at wide receiver.

[lawrence-related id=39066,39040]

Weighing only 185 pounds, Forster must build on his size as he develops towards the Power Five level. The Big Ten is a physical conference and if Forster can add power with his speed he can be a balance running back for the Scarlet Knights.

Forster can add depth to Rutgers’ special teams with the ability to return kicks or punts. Regardless of his size, the Scarlet Knights added another athletic weapon to their offense in 2025.

‘I want to make history’ – 4-star John Forster on picking Rutgers football last week

John Forster talks about picking Rutgers football.

The commitment of John Forster last week was a significant pick-up for a Rutgers football recruiting class that is among the best in the Big Ten as well as the nation.

A running back from St. Joseph’s (Montvale, New Jersey), Forster is one of several high-profile recruits to have committed to Rutgers this recruiting cycle. He committed to the Scarlet Knights last weekend.

Arguably the poster boy of this class, Forster heads up a class that has certainly turned heads. Rivals ranks the class as seventh in the nation and 247Sports puts them at No. 10.

Both recruiting outlets have Rutgers with one of the best recruiting classes in the Big Ten.

Forster took an official visit to Rutgers in late May and then followed it up one week later with a visit to Illinois. His commitment last week underscored the gains Rutgers has made with in-state commits.

In terms of Forster, Rivals ranks him as the fifth-best running back in the nation and a four-star recruit. He has been offered by Boston College, Duke, Minnesota, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

“It felt like a home away from home,” Forster told Rutgers Wire. “And with the recruiting class they’re bringing in, I wanted to help make history in my home state.”

Forster had no shortage of high-profile offers, but his commitment to Rutgers sent a message about the direction of the program.

Coming off a 7-6 (3-6 Big Ten) season where they defeated Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, Rutgers is on the ascend. That momentum is being felt on the recruiting trail, where the Scarlet Knights currently have seven recruits ranked as four-star players.

[lawrence-related id=39031,39022]

There is a sense that with this highly-ranked class, Rutgers has turned a corner in terms of recruiting. Especially in terms of keeping in-state talent home.

“It’s very special every time my family and I are there,” Forster said.

“It’s a great time. They take great care of us and are very ensuring that they really care about family.”

‘We don’t worry about the stars’ – Greg Schiano says Rutgers recruits culture and philosophy, not rankings

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano breaks down his philosophy on recruiting.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – As nice as it is for Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano to have a highly ranked recruiting class, it is equally – if not more important – that the group fits the culture being developed around the Big Ten program.

It has been the road less taken for Schiano and Rutgers since his return, with Rutgers finally tasting a winning season in his fourth year back with the program.

Speaking last week prior to the start of his charity golf classic, Schiano discussed the impact of last season on recruiting. The class of 2025 is currently ranked among the best recruiting classes in the nation, with five committed players ranked as four-star recruits in the On3 Industry Rankings.

The impact of the Pinstripe Bowl win over Miami, before a national broadcast on ESPN, can’t be understated for Rutgers. It gave Schiano and his staff a bowl win over an elite name in college football.

That win sent a message that the Rutgers rebuild, set to enter its fifth season this fall, has staying power. The bowl game has become a part of the recruiting pitch for Rutgers.

And, given that the Scarlet Knights have a top-10 national class, it seems to be working.

“Going and beating a name brand like Miami in a game that,a lot of people saw – I think everything gets put into the equation,” Schiano said.

“So the relationships that are created by the coaches, our players do an incredible job on the recruiting visits making these guys understand they are going to be part of the solution. And it’s no secret, we need to be different. We’re not going to do it the same the ‘bluebloods’ do it and do it better than them and go flying by them. We got to be different. We go to do it our way, and our way is different. Usually, players know they want to be a part of it or they know they don’t.”

All told, the 2025 recruiting class has seven committed players who are ranked four-star recruits by either On3, Rivals, 247Sports or ESPN.

[lawrence-related id=39022,38992]

It is the highest rank for a Rutgers class since Schiano returned to the program. And, it has the potential to be the highest-ranked class that Rutgers has ever brought into the program.

There are some blue chip players for sure, including the likes of Under Armour All-American Jaelyne Matthews and recent running back commit [autotag]John Forster[/autotag]. But there is also a lot of quality and depth to this group.

And while the class features a number of four-star commits, there are also several under-the-radar players without the star rankings or big Power Five offers who are a part of the class. Schiano said that the evaluation of his coaches is paramount, as is the cultural fit into the program.

Rutgers, as a developmental program, does not get what Schiano calls the “ready-made” recruits. Instead, players are brought along and blended into roles within the program.

They develop and grow in the weight room and on the field before they are ready to make an impact.

[lawrence-related id=38904,38855,38758]

In the modern era of college football and the transfer football where instant gratification is the norm, not every recruit buys in Schiano’s philosophy for the program.

“Well, I really love the group and the guys that we have committed right now,” Schiano said.

“I think the reason (is that) our coaches do a great job of identifying the guys that are right for us. We don’t worry about their stars or who else is recruiting them. We really do a deep dive and evaluation on each kid- and it takes a lot of time. And my guys…I’m grateful that they put that time in. So it’s not only evaluating their film and evaluating their measurables but it’s evaluating the person. Are they a cultural fit for a program? And that takes the most time because how do you find that out those questions until you find out if this guy is a potential fit for our program.

“I think it’s even magnified now in this day and age.”

Rutgers football recruiting – Kamar Archie posts update after official visit weekend

Kamar Archie posts a recruitment update

Following a weekend official visit to Rutgers football, four-star linebacker [autotag]Kamar Archie[/autotag] is closing in on a decision and a commitment.

Archie is set to commit to a program in the next couple of weeks. Rutgers hosted him this past weekend during their final period for official visits.

He is a 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker at The Hun School (Princeton, New Jersey). On3 ranks Archie as the No. 196 player in the nation with Rivals ranking him as the No. 12 linebacker prospect in this recruiting class.

Rivals also places Archie as the seventh-best recruit in New Jersey in the class of 2025.

Archie is an absolute playmaker at linebacker. He is agile and quick but also is a hard-hitter.

On Wednesday, he posted an update on his social media about his Rutgers football official visit.

Over the weekend, Rutgers received a commitment from several recruits, including one who wasn’t even on an official visit.

John Forster, a four-star running back, took his official visit to Rutgers in late May and then made a surprise commitment announcement over the weekend.

[lawrence-related id=38972,38926,38966]

He is rated the fifth-best recruit in the nation according to Rivals.

The Rutgers 2025 recruiting, fresh off the momentum of last year’s 7-6 record and bowl win over Miami, is arguably the best in program history.

[lawrence-related id=38904]

Rutgers has the No. 10 recruiting class in the nation according to 247Sports. The Scarlet Knights are No. 18 nationally per the On3 rankings.

John Forster on why he committed to Rutgers football

John Forster discusses his commitment to Rutgers football.

Over the weekend, Rutgers football landed a huge in-state commitment from John Forster. The running back prospect is the seventh recruit ranked as a four-star to commit to the Scarlet Knights in this class.

A class of 2025 running back at St. Joseph’s (Montvale, New Jersey), Forster is coming off a season where he ran for 311 yards and five touchdowns on 50 carries. He represents a huge recruiting win for Rutgers.

Rivals ranks Forster as the fifth-best running back in the nation and a four-star per the Rivals rankings. His offer list included Boston College, Duke, Minnesota, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

His commitment is another significant moment for Rutger as they keep a top in-state player home and committed.

Forster took an official visit to Rutgers in late May and then was at Illinois last week.

“I’ve known Rutgers was my home for a while,” Forster told Rutgers Wire on Sunday.

“Every time my family and I are there it’s a great time. I knew I could be developed at a high level at Rutgers and that was the main factor for me.”

Rutgers now has a top-10 national recruiting class according to Rivals.

[lawrence-related id=38899,38896,38892]

The running back, who has been prioritized by Rutgers for over year, now sees this strong recruiting class as one that can continue the upward trajectory of the program.

“The class they’re bringing in is special,” Forster said. “I wanted to help make history in my home state.”

Wisconsin football class of 2025 RB target commits to Big Ten rival Rutgers

Wisconsin football class of 2025 RB target commits to Big Ten rival Rutgers

Wisconsin football class of 2025 running back target John Forster announced his commitment to Rutgers on Saturday.

Despite Wisconsin making the final five schools for the three-star recruit, the rising senior trimmed his list of potential landing spots to Illinois and Rutgers last week, per 247Sports’ Brian Dohn.

The Montvale, New Jersey product canceled his June 14 official visit with the Badgers along with his planned trip to West Virginia. Forster visited both Illinois and Rutgers respectively over the last two weekends prior to his collegiate commitment.

Forster is 247Sports’ No. 422 player in the class of 2025, No. 31 running back and No. 13 recruit from his home state of New Jersey.

Wisconsin will now look to secure a commitment from four-star Byron Louis, who was on campus for an official visit on June 7 and is still yet to announce his commitment. Forster was previously Wisconsin’s other top running back target in the class.

Nonetheless, Rivals currently has Wisconsin’s 2025 recruiting class ranked No. 6 in the nation. The group has 19 commitments and eight since official visits began in June.

Fickell and company added two blue-chip players to their growing class of 2025 this week with commitments from four-star linebacker Mason Posa and four-star wide receiver Eugene Hilton Jr. The Badgers will aim to build on what has been an outstanding recruiting cycle thus far.

The Kaj Sanders effect is being felt in the Rutgers football ’25 recruiting class

Rutgers football’s Kaj Sanders set the tone for this recruiting class.

Kaj Sanders took a leap of faith when he committed to Rutgers football last July. Now the former blue-chip recruit is very much the face of what could well be a resurgence for Rutgers.

In short, the impact of Rutgers landing Sanders in the last recruiting cycle is something that is still resonating within the state.

Sanders was not only a four-star recruit, he starred for the state’s top program in Bergen Catholic (Oradell, New Jersey). Last summer, he picked Rutgers from a final four that also included North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

A four-star by Rivals. Sanders was ranked as a top five recruit in the 2024 class. He was also a four-star by On3.

His class ended up being a very solid one, with a number of top recruits joining Sanders and committing to Rutgers. But it is this current class, one ranked top-10 in the nation, that is shaping up to be Sanders’ legacy.

In fact, through his commitment, Sanders made Rutgers cool and in doing so, paved the way for this next class to seriously consider staying in-state. Because of his high skill set and athleticism, Sanders became a pied piper not just in his class but also in the class after him.

It isn’t hyperbole to say that without Sanders committing to Rutgers, this monster class pulled in by head coach Greg Schiano might not be happening. Sanders set the tone for a group that now includes seven players ranked as four-star recruits.

The latest came on Saturday when running back [autotag]John Forster[/autotag], a four-star from St. Joseph’s (Montvale, New Jersey), committed to Rutgers. Forster is a top-five recruit in the state.

John Forster, a 4-star, commits to Rutgers over Penn State, Tennessee & Wisconsin offers

New Jersey running back John Forster commits to Rutgers.

Greg Schiano is on such a roll right now recruiting that he just landed a recruit who isn’t even on an official visit this weekend. And in adding John Forster, the Rutgers football recruiting class just landed another four-star.

Forster, a class of 2025 running back at St. Joseph’s (Montvale, New Jersey), is one of the top players in the state in this recruiting cycle. He is the first running back to commit to Rutgers in this class.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Forster is the fifth-best player in the state according to Rivals. He is also ranked as the fifth-best running back in the nation and a four-star per the Rivals rankings.

In 2023 while playing behind four-star Yasin Willis, a senior running back who flipped from Pittsburgh to Syracuse, Forster ran for 311 yards and five touchdowns on 50 carries. He also had 14 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Forster took an official visit to Rutgers in late May and then last weekend to Illinois.

He had a strong offer list that included Boston College, Duke, Minnesota, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin among others.

With the commitment of Forster, Rutgers now has seven commits ranked as four-star recruits by either Rivals, 247Sports or On3.

Wisconsin no longer in contention for a popular class of 2025 running back

Wisconsin no longer in contention for a popular class of 2025 running back

Wisconsin football is no longer in contention for class of 2025 running back John Forster, according to a report from 247Sports’ Brian Dohn.

The Badgers had previously made his final five schools along with Illinois, West Virginia, Rutgers and Virginia Tech. That list has reportedly been trimmed to only Illinois and Rutgers.

Wisconsin had an official visit scheduled with the three-star running back for the weekend of June 14. That visit is reportedly canceled, along with Forster’s planned trip to West Virginia. He had previously visited Illinois and Rutgers respectively over the last two weekends.

Forster is 247Sports’ No. 422 player in the class of 2025, No. 32 running back and No. 13 recruit from his home state of New Jersey.

He was one of Wisconsin’s top remaining running back targets in the class. The Badgers are yet to land a player at the position in the cycle. They now seem to be all-in on four-star Byron Louis, who was on campus for an official visit last weekend and is still yet to announce his commitment.

Wisconsin’s class of 2025 currently ranks No. 13 in the nation with 17 players committed. All eyes are on the impending announcements by four-star LB Mason Posa and four-star WR Eugene Hilton Jr. The Badgers are considered the favorite in each race, and could soon have a top-10 class if they land both players.

After last week’s Rutgers football offer, David Forster is offered by a second Big Ten program

David Forster has been offered by another Big Ten program.

It is now two Big Ten offers in the span of a week for [autotag]David Forster[/autotag], an athlete prospect who hasn’t even played high school football yet. Last week, Forster was offered by his in-state program of Rutgers.

His brother, [autotag]John Forster[/autotag], was at Rutgers last weekend for an official visit. David Forster was offered by Rutgers during that visit as well, marking the first college offer of his career.

A four-star running back, John Forster is on an official to Illinois this weekend. He is the fifth-ranked player in New Jersey in the class of 2025 and Rivals has him as the fifth-best running back recruit in the nation.

As for David Forster, the class of 2028 recruit is still a bit of an ambiguity in terms of a position projection, but it is clear that he is a talented athlete. At 6-foot-4, it seems that he will be a wide receiver and a defensive back when he plays this fall for St. Joseph Regional (Montvale):

At St. Joseph, the Foster brothers will play for Augie Hoffman.

[lawrence-related id=38714,38711]

Currently, the class of 2025 is a strong one for Rutgers and features 19 committed players. Were John Forster to commit to the Scarlet Knights, he would likely help raise the ranking of a class that is currently No. 12 in the nation for this class (per 247Sports).
