LSU’s Caden Durham just outside the top 10 in Phil Steele’s freshman running back rankings

Caden Durham will have to battle for carries, but the true freshman could make an immediate impact.

With a 1,100-yard rusher at quarterback in [autotag]Jayden Daniels [/autotag]moving on, it’s clear that LSU will need to get more out of its stable of running backs in 2024.

Back are veterans [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], who withdrew from the transfer portal, as well as sophomore [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag], who impressed during his rookie campaign.

But LSU also adds a freshman to that mix who could make an immediate impact in [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag]. The four-star 2024 signee from Duncanville, Texas, was a top-100 prospect coming out of high school, and Phil Steele ranked him as the No. 11 running back in his preseason freshmen rankings.

It will be a battle for carries as a true freshman, but LSU has utilized a varied running back rotation over the last two seasons under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], and it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t see some action as a first-year this fall.

John Emery Jr.’s return brings back needed experience to LSU’s running back room

John Emery Jr. is back at LSU. That’s experience LSU needs in the running back room.

LSU landed a transfer running back last week, but he’s hardly a stranger to the program. [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] is back after exploring his options in the portal. For a moment, Emery looked destined for UCLA. But with LSU needing numbers and experience at running back, a return made sense for the Destrehan, Louisiana, native.

Emery, who will be coming off a torn ACL, is set for his sixth year of college football. He was a five-star and the top-ranked running back in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports and ESPN.

Emery made a strong early impression. There wasn’t much opportunity in 2019 with the talent LSU had at the skill positions, but when he got his chances, he made the most of them.

As a true freshman, Emery ranked fourth among SEC RBs with 35+ carries in PFF’s elusive rating. With [autotag]Clyde Edwards-Helaire[/autotag] off to the NFL, there was a hope Emery would be LSU’s next feature back.

Following his freshmen year, Emery underwent LASIK eye surgery, correcting vision in an eye that was considered legally blind. The news led to even more speculation of an Emery breakout.

As a sophomore, he sat in the top 10 in yards after contact per attempt. But it was a weird year. LSU lacked direction as a program during the pandemic years, and Emery was in and out of the lineup.

In 2021, LSU was still searching for a running back to claim the feature role. Emery was as good a candidate as any, but the NCAA declared him academically ineligible for the entire year.

By this point, Emery had also dealt with nagging lower-body injuries throughout his career. The suspension lingered into the first two games of 2022, but Emery finally made his return.

He struggled to find consistency, but Emery came up with big plays against Auburn and Alabama. Both wins LSU needed to capture the SEC West title. His impact was limited, but you could argue the Tigers wouldn’t have won the division without him.

Emery returned for a fifth year in 2023. He was still trying to get his grades straightened out and missed spring practice to do so. Emery got back to football and had a tough time cracking the lineup, getting just 23 carries in seven games last year. He looked good in the Auburn contest with a season-best 91 total yards and a touchdown.

Emery’s year came to a close when he tore his ACL against Florida.

That brings us to the present day. It’s unclear what contribution Emery can make to LSU in 2024. First, it’s a matter of health. The ACL tear was in November and Emery’s struggled with injuries before. It’s rare to see a player have a true breakout campaign this late in his career, but that’s not what LSU needs or expects from Emery.

Prior to Emery’s return, [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] was the lone experienced back on this roster. Emery has 249 career touches for 1,382 yards and 16 touchdowns. That’s more than any other LSU back in all three categories.

Also of note: Emery and Williams are the last two players from the 2019 national title team to remain with LSU.

Having two veteran backs like that will be useful to a group that’s looking for a young back to step up. There’s hope that will be [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag], who looked good in the limited time he got last year. Maybe it’s true freshman [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag], who might be one of the fastest backs in the SEC.

If Emery can get back, be a leader in the room, and make a solid contribution here and there, this year will be a success. It’s been a long and winding road to get here.

Emery’s given a lot to LSU over the years and that’s the veteran presence needed in this room right now.

RB John Emery Jr. withdraws from transfer portal, returns to LSU for final season

John Emery Jr. could finally be poised for a breakout season in 2024.

LSU running back [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] has withdrawn from the transfer portal and will return to the Tigers for his sixth and final season of eligibility, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Emery entered the transfer portal following his fifth-year senior season in 2023, in which he appeared in seven games with no starts, but he’ll apparently be returning to the Tigers to help a running back room that lacked both depth and experience without him.

It’s been quite a winding college journey for Emery, a former five-star recruit from St. Rose. After seeing 39 carries in 10 games during a promising true freshman season in 2019, he made three starts as a sophomore in 2022 and finished second on the team in rushing with 388 yards and three touchdowns.

Expectations were high for Emery entering 2021, but he missed the entire season due to academic suspension. He returned after missing the first two games in 2022, ultimately starting two games with 11 appearances. It was his best season statistically, as he finished with 375 yards but doubled his 2020 touchdown total to six.

He also caught 13 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Emery saw fewer carries in 2023, appearing in just seven games and totaling 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. However, with leading rusher Jayden Daniels gone, the Tigers are likely to rely much more heavily on their group of running backs.

[autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] seems to be the bell cow as the graduate student and former walk-on has seen the most carries of anyone in the group outside of Emery. [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag] showed promise as a true freshman last fall, while 2024 signee [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag] also joined the fray.

Emery has had promising moments at points in his career, and this could be the year it finally comes together.

Former LSU RB John Emery Jr. expected to transfer to UCLA

John Emery Jr. is expected to transfer to UCLA according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Another former LSU player seems to be close to announcing a transfer destination.

On Thursday night, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that former LSU running back [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] is expected to transfer to UCLA. A five-star recruit and top-15 overall prospect in the 2019 class, Emery spent five years with the Tigers.

After showing promise as a rotational player his first two seasons, Emery missed the entire 2021 season due to academic ineligibility. He returned in 2022 and appeared in 18 games with two starts over the last two seasons.

In his LSU career, Emery appeared in 37 games with five starts, totaling 1,062 yards and 14 touchdowns on 213 carries.

Emery would be joining a UCLA program that is led by DeShaun Foster after previous coach Chip Kelly left to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

UCLA hosting former LSU running back

UCLA hosting an LSU running back…

The UCLA Bruins football program continues to work hard on both the recruiting front and the transfer portal. On Tuesday, it was reported that the Bruins are hosting former LSU running back John Emery, per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Ex-LSU running back John Emery is set to visit UCLA, sources tell @247Sports.

Emery has spent his entire college career at LSU and has played four seasons with the Tigers. He has 213 carries with 1,062 yards and 14 rushing scores during his time in Baton Rouge.

Emery recently graduated from LSU and is looking to play one more year of college football, and playing for DeShaun Foster would be a good move for both Emery and the Bruins.

Emery entered the portal at the end of April and would be a big addition to the UCLA running back, which also brought back TJ Harden, who was featured in the trailer of EA Sports College Football 25.

LSU running back John Emery Jr. enters portal as a grad transfer

John Emery Jr. will play his sixth and final season of college football elsewhere.

After a winding career at LSU, running back [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] is moving on to play his sixth and final season elsewhere.

Emery entered the transfer portal as a graduate on Tuesday, as was first reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. He appeared in 37 games with five starts in his LSU career, totaling 1,062 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

A former five-star recruit from St. Rose, Louisiana, Emery came to Baton Rouge with high expectations. After seeing a small role in 10 games as a true freshman, Emery made three starts as a sophomore in 2020 and finished second on the team in rushing.

However, a highly anticipated 2021 season wouldn’t come to pass as Emery missed the entire year due to academic suspension. He returned to the fold after missing the first two games in 2022, and he finished with 375 yards and six touchdowns — his highest single-season total — while appearing in 11 games with two starts.

Emery had a smaller role in 2023, appearing in seven games but seeing just 23 carries. His campaign ended in November with a torn ACL.

He was not expected to return to LSU in 2024 and did not participate in spring practice as he recovered from injury. Now, we have some clarity regarding his future plans.

LSU RB Tre Bradford expected to enter transfer portal, per report

LSU’s deep running back room has seen another departure.

The transfer portal doesn’t officially open for non-graduate football players until Monday, but a high number of players have already announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal.

Included in that are several players from LSU’s deep running back room. [autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag] and walk-on Corren Norman plan to enter the portal, and now they’ll be joined by [autotag]Tre Bradford[/autotag], according to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

A four-star recruit in the 2020 class, Bradford initially transferred to Oklahoma briefly following the 2021 season before returning to the Tigers, though he wouldn’t officially rejoin the team until this summer. He appeared in just one game this fall, starting the opener against Florida State.

In that game, he saw four carries for one yard and had a catch for 55 yards, but he was quickly supplanted by [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] and others in the running back room.

In three seasons at LSU, Bradford appeared in seven games with two starts, seeing just 16 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. After a winding career with the Tigers that was marked by a departure and eligibility issues, Bradford will look for a fresh start elsewhere.

LSU running back enters the transfer portal

LSU’s deep running back room took a hit on Monday.

An LSU running back has entered his name into the transfer portal.

[autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag], a junior from Birmingham, Alabama, has suffered injuries during his freshman and sophomore seasons, and he hasn’t touched the field this year for the Tigers.

LSU has turned to [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag], [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Trey Holly[/autotag], [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag] and [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] to carry the load in the backfield. Goodwin is eligible to be redshirted this fall since he has not appeared in any games, though it remains to be seen if that will happen.

During his two years on the Bayou, Goodwin appeared in 13 games, making three starts, and he carried the ball 61 times for 332 yards and five touchdowns. He had a much better season as a sophomore than as a freshman which led to Goodwin being a prime candidate for playing time this year but he has yet to see the field.

Injury Report: LSU RB Logan Diggs DOUBTFUL vs. Georgia State on Saturday

Logan Diggs is unlikely to suit up for the second week in a row.

As LSU prepares to face Georgia State in what it hopes will be a tuneup game on Saturday night, it looks like the team will be shorthanded at running back once again.

Starting tailback [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], who missed last week’s game against Florida with an upper-body injury, was listed as doubtful to play in Saturday’s game against the Panthers by coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] on Thursday.

Diggs, a transfer addition from Notre Dame, has been a revelation for the Tigers’ run game this season. He leads LSU running backs with 113 carries and 635 yards, and he’s added six touchdowns on the year.

Assuming Diggs isn’t able to play, LSU will then likely turn to [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag], as well as true freshmen [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Holly[/autotag]. [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], who saw quite a bit of action in Diggs’ absence last week, was lost early in the game with a torn ACL that will cost him the remainder of the season.

BREAKING: LSU RB John Emery Jr. out for season with torn ACL

It’s a disappointing end to the season for the fifth-year senior.

The Tigers suffered a major blow to the running back room in Saturday’s win over Florida as [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] exited with what [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said he feared would be a significant injury.

That turned out to be the case as Emery suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season, Kelly said on Monday. Emery was seeing action alongside [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] in the absence of [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], who missed the game and is questionable heading into Saturday’s game against Georgia State.

It’s a disappointing end to the season for the fifth-year senior who has had a winding journey in his time at LSU.

A former five-star running back, Emery saw rotational action in his first two seasons before missing the entirety of 2021 due to academic suspension. He was suspended to start both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and he was away from the team for much of the past offseason focusing on academics before returning in the fall.

Without Emery, LSU will turn to Williams, [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] and true freshmen [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Holly[/autotag].
