Tennessee offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle details Joe Milton’s performance at Florida.

No. 20 Tennessee (2-1, 0-1 SEC) suffered its first loss in 2023 at Florida during Week 3.

Redshirt senior quarterback Joe Milton III completed 20-of-34 passing attempts for 287 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for the Vols. He recorded six rushing yards on five attempts.

Tennessee offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle discussed Milton’s performance at Florida.

“Joe was really good at his decision making, his calmness on the sidelines,” Halzle said. “He kept the calm within the storm out there. Talking to him on the headset, after every single drive he was like ‘alright, cool, move on, what do we have coming next?’ The guy is really even keeled. His decision making is really good, was accurate with the football, the guy played a good game. Was happy with that.

“Obviously, we can always be better, we can be pushing for our communication for how we all get on the same page in an environment like that when it’s harder to hear and it’s not the friendly confines, so that’s where we can keep pushing to grow, but his overall game management was very good.”

Joey Halzle discusses his first fall camp as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator.

Joey Halzle enters his third season at Tennessee.

Halzle served as quarterbacks coach from 2021-22 for the Vols. He is offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023.

Halzle met with media on Thursday and discussed his first fall training camp as offensive coordinator.

“As far as the game planning, I said it when I first took this role, we’ve all done that all together,” Halzle said. “That’s never just been one person’s show who says this is how we’re doing it. It’s extremely communal. The staff has been awesome around me. It’s been a great transition. It hasn’t been like drinking through a fire hose. There are more (responsibilities), as far as going into meeting time. I have to have everything prepped on the front end. I can’t just show up and take my notes, can’t just stare at my quarterback as we’re watching tape and seeing how that’s going. You got to see how everybody’s doing and make sure the whole thing hangs together perfectly.

“As far as an adjustment, also you got to talk a whole lot more. You got to talk the whole meeting. I’m kind of done talking during the day. I’m not a big talker. That’s the main part of it, the front end everything is on you to make sure it’s prepared so everybody else can have a smooth transition through their day.”

Vols ‘feel really good’ about offensive line ahead of 2023 season

Tennessee feels really good about the offensive line ahead of 2023 season.

Tennessee will kick off its 2023 season on Sept. 2 versus Virginia (noon EDT, ABC).

Joey Halzle enters his first season as offensive coordinator after serving as the Vols’ quarterbacks coach from 2021-22.

Halzle met with media on Thursday and discussed Tennessee’s offensive line.

“Feel really good about how the offensive line is looking,” Halzle said. “There are guys that can rotate in and play a bunch of spots, and that’s what’s good about the guys we have is that guys can go in and out. We have guys that can play all three positions. It’s really helpful having that kind of utilization with the guys up front.

“I feel really good about the five guys we are going to roll out there with in a couple of weeks. I feel like we can put a good product on the field with them.”

Joey Halzle discusses Nathan Leacock during spring practices

Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle discusses wide receiver Nathan Leacock during spring practices.

Tennessee practiced for the third time Thursday during practices at Haslam Field.

Following practice, Tennessee offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle met with media. Halzle discussed freshman early enrollee wide receiver Nathan Leacock.

“He’s a good-sized kid that can really run,” Halzle said of Leacock. “When he gets out and goes and he’s playing decisive and he’s playing fast, he has legitimate track speed. He’s a big fast guy running down the middle of the field, which is always fun to see.”

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Leacock is from Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina.

He signed with the Vols during the early signing period on Dec. 21, 2022.

Dont’e Thornton can provide position flexibility to Vols’ offense

Oregon transfer wide receiver Dont’e Thornton can provide position flexibility to Tennessee’s offense.

Joey Halzle was promoted as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jan. 5.

He met with media Feb. 8 and previewed Tennessee ahead of spring practices.

Halzle discussed Oregon transfer wide receiver Dont’e Thornton being part of Tennessee’s offense in 2023.

“With Dont’e, really big guy that can run,” Halzle said. “He’s 6’4-plus, the day he steps on the field he might always be the fastest guy on the field. That guy can really roll. He does a great job of giving you position flexibility with what he has done and his ability to get in and out of breaks.

“He’s fluid, he can roll over the in-steps, he can do all of that type of stuff. He can read defenses from his time playing college football. He gives you a chance to move him all over the field and create mismatches.”

Thornton committed to the Vols on Jan. 9.

He appeared in 25 games from 2021-22 for Oregon. Thornton recorded 26 receptions, 541 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, while totaling six rushing yards on two attempts.

Cameron Seldon gives Vols ‘a chance to do some really fun stuff’

Cameron Seldon gives the Vols “a chance to do some really fun stuff.”

Cameron Seldon signed with Tennessee during the early signing period Dec. 21.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound wide receiver is from Northumberland High School in Heathsville, Virginia.

Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle met with media Wednesday and discussed Seldon.

“He gives you a chance to do some really fun stuff,” Halzle said of Seldon. “Obviously, with a young guy that’s first time in the building, you got to be careful to not bog somebody down and overload them with everything you could do. You got to get him good at one thing first.

“Where he ends up starting out, as we get through our pre-spring stuff before we get on the field for spring ball, we’ll make that decision more definitive as we roll based on what he can handle, what he does well, what he doesn’t do well. Then once he gets one thing cemented — okay he’s really good at this — now you can start growing a guy like that’s extra roles. Really whatever they can handle, starting at a young age and moving on through his time throughout the program.”
