2023 Zozo Championship odds, course history and picks to win

After a week in Sin City, the PGA Tour is across the world in Chiba, Japan, for the 2023 Zozo Championship at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club.

A loaded field including Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and defending champion Keegan Bradley is set to tee off Thursday — or Wednesday for those on the East Coast, as the first tee time is 7:45 p.m. ET.

Schauffele, who has finished inside the top 10 twice in Japan in three appearances, including last year when he tied for ninth, is the betting favorite at +700 (7/1), followed by Morikawa at +1100 (11/1). Home-country hero Matsuyama sits tied for the fourth-best odds at +1600 (16/1).

PGA Tour golfers, PXG founder headline First Tee Phoenix fundraiser ‘green’ carpet event

The night raised close to $1 million.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The First Tee Phoenix celebrated its 20th year with a “green” carpet fundraising bash Monday night.

PGA Tour golfers Joel Dahmen and James Hahn were among those who walked the celebrity green carpet at Ocean 44, a high-end seafood restaurant in Scottsdale, where guests paid $1,500 a plate to raise money for the First Tee program, first established in 2003. There are now 14 golf courses hosting First Tee-Phoenix programs, including TPC Scottsdale, home of the PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open.

Other famous faces who showed up Monday included ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon, golf trick shot artist Tania Tare, PXG founder Bob Parsons, former Arizona governor Doug Ducey and former vice president Dan Quayle.

The First Tee has 150 chapters nationwide with a goal of connecting the game of golf with junior golfers ages 4 to 18 in underserved communities. First Tee-Phoenix reports that there are now more than 120,000 young golfers involved in the program statewide.

Jeff Mastro, owner and founder of Ocean 44 as well as popular Scottsdale steak restaurants Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse, hosted the event and underwrote the entire cost of the evening.

There were about 180 attendees in all and the night raised close to $1 million.

After the conclusion of this week’s Wyndham Championship, the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the first event of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug. 10-13). The top 50 will then advance to the BMW Championship (Aug. 17-20), and the top 30 will ultimately punch their tickets to the season-ending Tour Championship (Aug. 24-27). This year, the total bonus pool for the FedEx Cup Playoffs is a whopping $75 million.

With the regular season coming to a close on Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, players ranked No. 60 (670) to No. 80  (538) are separated by just 132 points. Each of the last 10 players in and first 10 players out are in the field this week, too.

Cam Davis (No. 69) played his way just inside the top 70 with a T-10 at the 3M Open, same with Lee Hodges, who rose from No. 74 to No. 33 thanks to his win at TPC Twin Cities. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas dropped after his 3M Open missed cut (but more on him to come).

Some stars are heading home early.

BLAINE, Minn. — Coming into the 2023 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, the penultimate event of the PGA Tour’s 2022-23 regular season, there were plenty of golfers who needed to make a final push to get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Lee Hodges is in the lead at 15 under after Friday’s action, and he finished his second round with a birdie putt after the horn sounded to suspend play. It was suspended due to darkness with a few groups remaining who will finish the second round Saturday morning.

However, plenty of golfers needing a good week in the Twin Cities are packing their bags and heading home early.

Those who missed the cut, which came at 4-under 138, included players who were making a playoff push and others who were hoping to make their respective Ryder Cup teams.

The cut won’t officially be made until Saturday morning when the second round concludes, but the number is set.

SILVIS, Ill. — As the PGA Tour season begins to wind down with the last major of the season and the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the horizon, the action is heating up at the 2023 John Deere Classic.

The Tour’s annual stop at TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities is known for putting rising talent into the spotlight and the young stars are shining after the first 36 holes. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for a handful of PGA Tour winners and fan favorites who will be leaving the tournament before the weekend party begins.

Why Joel Dahmen, Rickie Fowler are buying beverages for golf fans in Detroit

DETROIT — Joel Dahmen is a man of his word so he’s buying drinks at J’s Penalty Box in nearby Ferndale.

On January 8, when the Detroit Lions upset the Green Bay Packers in the final week of the NFL’s regular season to send the Seattle Seahawks to the playoffs, Dahmen tweeted, “Holy Cow! I can’t believe the Lions are sending MY Seahawks to the playoffs. Beers for everyone in Detroit this summer.”

“Didn’t think much of it,” Dahmen said after the opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “They remembered.”

So Dahmen said he thought of a way that it wouldn’t put too big of a dent in his wallet – beers ain’t cheap at the RMC – and got his sponsor Long Drink, maker of the Finnish alcoholic beverage, to participate in a promotion where he would buy 10 drinks for every birdie he made.

Dahmen made three birdies Thursday while struggling to a 4-over 76. Fortunately, Rickie Fowler, who is an investor in Long Drink, chipped in eight birdies so the first 110 Long Drinks were free at J’s Penalty Box, a popular sports bar not far from Detroit Golf Club, the site of the RMC.

Fowler got involved three years ago in Long Drink, described as a “refreshing, citrus soda with a premium liquor kick,” thanks to his friendship with music producer Kygo. Actor Miles Teller is another owner.

Asked if he might be bellying up to the bar at J’s Penalty Bar, Dahmen said, “There’s always that possibility, especially after my round today.”

The good news is Dahmen is buying on Friday, too.

“More birdies tomorrow,” he said.

Top 50 bubble watch: PGA Tour players currently in and out of next year’s designated events (after Memorial Tournament)

No golfers played their way in our out of the top 50, but the top 30 or so players are beginning to pull away.

For PGA Tour players, being inside the top 50 of the FedEx Cup Standings now comes with more than just a spot in the field at the BMW Championship.

Earlier this year the PGA Tour’s board ratified a new approach for the Tour’s 2024 schedule that will see reduced fields in new designated events that feature increased purses up to $20 million. Fields in designated events will contain between 70 and 78 players and be largely comprised of the top 50 players who qualify for the BMW Championship during the previous season’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, adding some extra intrigue to the season-long race that was desperately needed.

Midway through major season, with the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club on the horizon and the Memorial Tournament in the rearview, here’s a look at some players who are currently in – and out – of next year’s designated events.

Biggest movers

Despite coming up short in the playoff to Viktor Hovland at the Memorial, Denny McCarthy was the big mover of the week, jumping 21 spots to No. 26 to find a little breathing room from the top-50 cutoff. Hovland’s fourth win on Tour saw him move up 10 spots to fourth.

No golfers played their way in or out of the top 50 this week, but the top 30 or so players are beginning to pull away and secure their safety.

Notables inside the top 50

The usual suspects this season of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa are all Nos. 1-3 in the standings, with the newcomer Hovland in fourth and Tony Finau dropping to fifth.

Kurt Kitayama (14) has reached as high as fifth this season but moved outside the top 10 this week.

Thomas Detry has come out swinging in his first full season on Tour. The Belgian has eight top 25s and three top 10s in 19 starts and currently sits 41st. Same with 34-year-old Eric Cole (43), who has either finished in the top 25 or been cut in 11 of his last 13 starts.

Fan favorites Jason Day (7) and Rickie Fowler (22) are both inside the top 25, same with Jordan Spieth (18), who continues to climb after a slow start to the season.

Notables outside the top 50

Only 127 points separate Nos. 51 Tommy Fleetwood (611) and 70 Justin Suh (484).

Justin Thomas is currently No. 75 but would still qualify for the designated events due to his top-30 place in the Official World Golf Ranking (15), same with Tommy Fleetwood (51) and Hideki Matsuyama (57). Cameron Young – ranked 17th in the world – sits 47th in the FedEx Cup standings just inside the line.

Joel Dahmen gave a huge gift to a PGA Championship fan who he hit with a shot

This was so classy.

Joel Dahmen has been a joy to watch on the PGA Tour — especially after an episode of Netflix’s Full Swing featured him, focusing on him grinding to make a living after surviving testicular cancer.

And he’s a good dude, something he proved earlier this week at PGA Championship 2023 practice in Oak Hill. According to a fan, Dahmen hit him in the calf on Wednesday.

“He proceeds to ask me how much a beer costs at the tourney and I tell him $17 a pop,” said Caleb McGuire (@YourPalCal_ on Twitter). “He then pulls out a crispy $100 bill and says ‘I got your beers today.'”

Who’s in your lineup this week?

We’re less than 24 hours away from the start of round one at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.

Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, the top two players in the Official World Golf Ranking, have decided to take this week off (all players are permitted to skip one designated event this season).

Max Homa enters the week as the defending champion, although his win came at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm after the venue changed to accommodate the 2022 Presidents Cup being staged at Quail Hollow later in the year. Rory McIlroy, a three-time winner of this event, is the last player to win in Charlotte.
