Cardinals release CB Josh Jackson, 2 others on eve of final cut deadline

The Cardinals released CB Josh Jackson, LB Joe Walker and OL Koda Martin.

The Arizona Cardinals have begun the process of cutting down their roster down to 53 players. They announced three player cuts Monday.

They released cornerback Josh Jackson, linebacker Joe Walker and Koda Martin.

Walker was on his third stint with the team. Jackson was signed during the spring. Martin had been on the Cardinals’ practice squad the last two seasons.

The release of Walker and Martin are no surprise. There simply was no room on the roster at their positions. The release of Jackson is somewhat more surprising, as the cornerback room is lacking in experience and bodies.

The Cardinals must move another 25 players via release, injured reserve or trade by Tuesday’s 1 p.m. Arizona time deadline.

Cardinals being back Joe Walker, Zach Kerr to practice squad

Kerr was released from the active roster on Monday and Walker was on Tuesday. Both will continue with the team on the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Joe Walker from the active roster earlier this week with the return of Tanner Vallejo from the COVID list. However, Walker, who has played every game since Week 6 through practice squad elevations and then being signed to the 53-man roster, is back on the team.

The team announced Thursday he was re-signed to the practice squad. In a move the team did not announce earlier in the week, they also re-signed defensive tackle Zach Kerr to the practice squad after releasing him earlier in the week. That transaction appeared on Wednesday’s NFL transaction report.

To make room for these additions, the Cardinals released linebacker Tahir Whitehead and defensive lineman Matt Dickerson. The team announced the release of Whitehead on Thursday. His and Dickerson’s release showed up on Tuesday’s NFL transaction report.

Cardinals release LB Joe Walker, cut 2 from practice squad

With the return of Tanner Vallejo from the COVID list, Walker was released, although he will likely be re-signed to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals will have linebacker Tanner Vallejo back in the lineup this week. He was activated from the COVID list to start the week after he landed there after returning from injured reserve.

As a result, the Cardinals decided to make a roster move, releasing linebacker Joe Walker. Walker had played every week since Week 6 but, up until Week 16, had been on the practice squad all season and would get elevated to play. He was signed to the active roster in Week 16.

With Vallejo back, he has been released and likely will be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The team did not announce the roster move but it appears on Tuesday’s NFL transaction report.

They also cut linebacker Tahir Whitehead and defensive lineman Matt Dickerson from the practice squad.

Cardinals sign LB Joe Walker to active roster, make other practice squad moves

TE David Wells is released, LB Joe Walker is signed, LB Nate Hall heads to the practice squad and LB Ron’Dell Carter gets signed by the Texans.

The Arizona Cardinals made a pair of minor roster moves Tuesday. Tight end David Wells, who had been activated from injured reserve on Monday, was released. To replace him on the roster, they signed linebacker Joe Walker from the practice squad to the active roster.

This was not an elevation.

Walker had been elevated to the active roster, either as a standard elevation or as a COVID-19 replacement, each of the last nine games and has played mostly on special teams since then.

He has seen 180 special teams snaps and 23 on defense for the Cardinals and has two tackles on defense and three on special teams.

The Cardinals also made a pair of other practice squad moves. They signed linebacker Nate Hall to the practice squad and saw linebacker Ron’Dell Carter leave. He was signed from the practice squad to the active roster of the Houston Texans.

Reliving Oregon’s comical and dominant history vs. the Utah Utes

The Oregon vs. Utah matchup has had some big games over the years, with one hilarious moment coming in 2014.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f27mq9z7hjgk6vc6 player_id=none image=https://duckswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

When you talk about the series history between the Oregon Ducks and Utah Utes, it’s impossible to look past one play that took place in November of 2014.

It’s the Kaelin Clay fumble, of course.

Don’t know what I’m referring to? I’d be happy to recount the tale.

It was a late-season game between the No. 4 Ducks and No. 17 Utes. Oregon had fallen behind early, the Utah was driving, up 7-0, early in the second quarter. QB Travis Wilson found WR Kaelin Clay on a deep post, and Clay was off to the races, with a walk-in TD that would have given Utah a commanding lead and all of the momentum.

As he crossed the goal line, Clay dropped the ball and celebrated. Teammates hounded him in the endzone and the score-bug flashed 13-0. But the whistle never blew, and LB Joe Walked picked up the ball and ran 99-yards for an Oregon TD. From there, on, the Ducks rolled to a 51-27 win and would later go on to appear in the first-ever College Football Playoff after Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy.

It’s surely a moment that will go down in Oregon Ducks history, as it was a turning point in one of their most successful seasons ever.

As for Oregon vs. Utah history, that’s also something that the Utes may not want to look back on. Many of the games have come in the past decade after Utah joined the Pac-12, but the Ducks have a career 23-10 record against the Utes. They’ve played 7 times in the past 8 years, with the Ducks winning 5 of those matchups.

The two squads did not face off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 shortened season.

So what will the story be this time around? It has a chance to be massively important, with the Ducks vying for a trip back to the College Football Playoffs should they win out. We will see what the next chapter holds on Saturday night.

Cardinals protect four on practice squad in Week 11

One surprise protection is veteran linebacker Tahir Whitehead.

The Arizona Cardinals can protect up to four players on the practice squad from being sign to the active roster of another team. Since they have no long snapper currently on the active roster, one of the four they protected is obviously long snapper Beau Brinkley.

He wasn’t the only one.

According to the NFL transaction list, the Cardinals protected four players:

  • LS Beau Brinkley
  • DL Josh Mauro
  • LB Joe Walker
  • LB Tahir Whitehead

Brinkley is no surprise. Mauro isn’t necessarily one, although with six defensive linemen already on the roster, perhaps we will find out about an injury to one of those players when the first injury report is released.

Walker has been playing on special teams.

The interesting protection is Whitehead, a veteran linebacker.

Rookie linebacker Zaven Collins has seemingly lost his spot in the playing rotation to Tanner Vallejo, but Vallejo left the game on Sunday with an injury.

Whitehead has started 95 games in the NFL, so the Cardinals perhaps will turn to him if Vallejo has to miss any time.

Washington signs a linebacker, releases a 2017 draft pick

The Washington Football Team continued their busy offseason on Wednesday, signing veteran linebacker Joe Walker.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Washington Football Team continued their busy offseason on Wednesday, signing veteran linebacker Joe Walker.

To make room for Walker, Washington released linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons.

Harvey-Clemons was a seventh-round draft pick by Washington back in 2017. In the first three years of his career, Harvey-Clemons appeared in 35 games for Washington, making 40 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.

Harvey-Clemons opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19.

Walker entered the NFL back in 2016 as a seventh-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played collegiately at Oregon.

Walker spent the first two years of his career with the Eagles before he was released in Sept. 2018. Philadelphia immediately signed Walker to its practice squad before he was signed to Arizona’s 53-man roster later that month.

Walker appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals in 2018. In 2019, he appeared in all 16 games, making 11 starts for Arizona. Walker recorded 65 tackles, including five for loss in 2019. He spent the 2020 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

Washington continues to make moves to improve the depth on the defensive side of the ball. In the past week, Washington has added defensive backs Bobby McCain and Chris Miller, and now Walker.

Walker’s biggest contribution will likely be on special teams if he makes the roster.

Report: LB Joe Walker heads to 49ers on one-year contract

He started 11 games and had 65 tackles for the Cardinals in 2019.

The Arizona Cardinals are losing one of their defensive starters in free agency. The latest is linebacker Joe Walker is staying the the division and, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, is headed to the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year contract.

Walker will likely be a backup and special teams player there.

That is what he probably should have been for the Cardinals in 2019 but he played himself into the defensive rotation.

He played in all 16 games, starting 11. He had 65 tackles and a forced fumble.

As Haason Reddick struggled, Walker impressed coaches in practice. He first went from being a backup to playing in base defensive packages. Later in the season he completely replaced Reddick at inside linebacker and Reddick moved outside.

Walker filled in a void and was productive but his position needed to be upgraded. With the addition of De’Vondre Campbell in free agency, Walker now moves on to the 49ers.

The Cardinals still have Dennis Gardeck, Keiswhan Bierria and Zeke Turner as backup linebackers.

Walker is the fourth Cardinals free agent to head elsewhere. Receivers Damiere Byrd and Pharoh Cooper signed one-year deals with the Patriots and Panthers. Defensive lineman Rodney Gunter got a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Report: 49ers to sign LB Joe Walker

The 49ers added some depth at linebacker with former Cardinals LB Joe Walker.

The 49ers on Monday began their second wave of offseason moves by adding some depth to their linebacking corps. They’re set to sign former Cardinals linebacker Joe Walker according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Walker joined the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Eagles in the 2016 draft. He spent his first year in Philadelphia on IR with a torn ACL, then started three of the 12 games he played his second year. The Cardinals signed him off the Eagles’ practice squad the following season and he played 14 games in 2018, and started 11 of 16 games last year.

While the 49ers are set in their starting linebacker group, Walker has a ton of special teams experience and could wind up replacing Elijah Lee, who was non-tendered by San Francisco.
