Former Wisconsin star center on PFF’s ‘Team of the Week’ for NFL Week 6

Former Wisconsin star center on PFF’s ‘Team of the Week’ for NFL Week 6

Former Wisconsin star center Joe Tippmann earned a spot on ProFootballFocus’ Week 6 ‘Team of the Week’ on Tuesday.

Tippmann, who serves as the starting center for the New York Jets, blocked a bevy of Bills defenders on Monday night to open up the field for emerging star running back Breece Hall. Hall rushed 18 times for 113 yards (6.3 yards per carry) against a stout Bills defense during the primetime slot.

The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native was accompanied by Cardinals’ left tackle Bernard Raimann, Jets left guard John Simpson, Falcons right guard Chris Lindstrom and Packers right tackle Zach Tom on the offensive line.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Buccaneers running back Sean Tucker, Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers, 49ers tight end George Kittle and Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton were also selected on the offensive end.

After being selected No. 43 overall by the Jets in the 2023 NFL draft, Tippman has become a dependable player on New York’s offensive line. He started in 14 of his 16 appearances as a rookie, plus all six games of the 2024 season.

During his four-year college tenure in Madison, Tippmann started at center from 2021-22 and allowed just one sack over 338 pass blocking snaps as a senior. His continuity with former Badgers’ running back Braelon Allen, who also suits up for the Jets, is an added bonus for Aaron Rodgers and company.

The Jets’ next game is against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Their opponent in that game, the Steelers, will be led defensively by former Wisconsin star T.J. Watt — who also made PFF’s ‘Team of the Week’ for NFL Week 6. His addition came after he totaled five tackles, four run stuffs, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in the Steelers’ 32-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Former Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann shared his perspective on fellow Badger alumnus Braelon Allen’s draft position on Monday.

During Monday’s New York Jets media availability, the New York Post’s Jared Schwartz asked Tippmann, who blocked for Allen at UW from 2021-22, if he believed Allen’s combine numbers affected his draft position.

Here’s what Tippmann had to say in response.

“Yeah, I thought so,” Tippmann said. “I didn’t think he was gonna be a guy that fell all the way to the fourth. It means we got him, so can’t complain.”

For context, Allen was selected No. 134 overall in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft by the New York Jets. Through three games, he’s playing like a first- or second-round pick.

In his first three appearances as a Jet, Allen registered 25 touches for 141 total yards and two touchdowns. He became the youngest player (20 years, 239 days) to record two scores from scrimmage in a single game.

Following the combine, the NFL’s Next Gen Stats listed Allen as a “Good Backup With The Potential To Develop Into Starter.” He notched 26 repetitions on the bench press, a 32-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-9 broad jump.

At 6 feet, 1 inch and 235 pounds, Allen’s size caused some to be skeptical of how he would fare at the professional level. However, he finished his career No. 9 on UW’s all-time leading rushing list with nearly 3,500 yards in just three years of action.

The Jets appear to have secured a steal in this year’s NFL draft. Allen will continue to see repetitions alongside New York’s star running back Breece Hall.

Braelon Allen isn’t even the best former Wisconsin Badger on the New York Jets offense

The “Wisconsin Badgers in the NFL” headlines are currently dominated by one player: New York Jets running back Braelon Allen.

There is other news, including continued dominance from Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt, a return to form by Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and ongoing injury issues with Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson. But no player is driving more conversation around their start to the 2024 season than Allen.

The former Badger great led the Jets in rushing with 55 yards on 11 carries in Thursday night’s 24-3 win over the New England Patriots. Social media reacted accordingly, wondering why he fell to the 134th pick (fourth round) of the draft.

The first three weeks of the season have seen Allen emerge as a significant piece of the Jets’ offensive attack, serving as more of a ‘1b’ to Breece Hall’s ‘1a,’ as opposed to a clear 1-2. It has been a fun ascendance to watch.

While Allen dominates the stat sheet and is hard to miss on the field, he isn’t even the best former Wisconsin Badger on the Jets offense. That would be center Joe Tippmann.

The Jets selected Tippmann in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft after a four-year Wisconsin career (2019-22) — two years as the program’s starter at center.

His rookie-year performance as the Jets’ starting center earned him a spot on  the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team. The former Badger was one of the offense’s most dependable players in 2023 despite the unit struggling after an early-season injury to starting QB Aaron Rodgers.

Tippmann has taken a significant jump in his second season. He has played a substantial role in the rushing success of both Hall and Allen — a rushing attack that is a big reason the team is 2-1 through three weeks.

The second-year pro’s overall performance has him graded as one of ProFootballFocus’ top centers in the sport.

So while Allen compiles impressive rookie year stats and continues to make NFL fans wonder how he fell to the Jets in the fourth round, just know another former Badger is a big reason for his strong play.

Jets at Titans: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 2

#Jets at #Titans: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 2:

The New York Jets will visit the Tennessee Titans in their upcoming Week 2 matchup.

Even with it being big early season AFC clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Jets (0-1) at Titans (0-1) matchup:

WR Allen Lazard vs. CB Chidobe Awuzie

(USAT)

Despite the Jets’ season-opening loss being pretty poor all around on offense despite starting the game with a touchdown, the Lazard connection with quarterback Aaron Rodgers was evident throughout the game. The peak moment was the touchdown catch Lazard had from Rodgers.

With L’Jarius Sneed likely covering Garrett Wilson, Lazard will be tasked with beating Awuzie. Pro Football Focus gave Awuzie a solid 67.1 grade for his work in Week 1.

OL Joe Tippmann vs. DT Jeffery Simmons

(USAT)

Perhaps the biggest key to getting the Jets offense moving is establishing a running game. That will give Rodgers space to work.

Simmons has long been one of the NFL’s top interior defenders. Tippmann, along with guards John Simpson and Alijah Vera-Tucker will need to keep him away from running back Breece Hall.

LB CJ Mosley vs. RB Tony Pollard

(USAT)

The Titans had a great game rushing the ball in Week 1 despite a loss to the Chicago Bears. Tennessee had 140 rushing yards as a team, 82 of those coming from Pollard.

On the flip side, as an entire defense the Jets have to improve against an opponent’s’ ground game. Mosley can’t do that all on his own, but as the quarterback of the New York defense, he has to do all he can to lead that side of the ball.

New York Jets center Joe Tippmann got married this weekend (can’t dance)

Joe Tippmann said “I do” this weekend.

One ring down for New York Jets center Joe Tippmann, and one left to go.

Tippmann tied the knot over the weekend, the second-year player signing a lifetime contract of a different sort. And the wedding comes weeks before the start of a highly anticipated Jets training camp, one where Tippmann and his teammates are expected to contend for a Super Bowl ring.

(Although the ring he got this weekend likely trumps the Super Bowl in his wife’s eyes).

First things first for the Jets is a return to the playoffs. This is the best and most balanced roster the Jets have had since 2010, which was the last time the franchise made the playoffs.

And Tippmann is a big reason for the optimism around the Jets.

A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, Tippmann was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team. He played in 16 games for the Jets, making 14 starts.

If Tippmann can take a step forward in 2024, it would be huge for the Jets, especially given the expectations around the rebuilt offensive line.

Everyone knows the stars of teams in the NFL, the true leaders that help their team go. As the years go, more players start to make the jump towards being a star in their own right. NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks recently listed such potential players for his 2024 All-Breakout Team and one piece of the Jets’ offensive line made the cut.

That player is second-year center Joe Tippmann, who made an immediate impact on the offense as a rookie in 2023 and is poised for even greater things in 2024.

Here’s what Brooks had to say about the Jets’ center:

Tippmann didn’t make his first regular-season appearance until Week 3 last season, and he didn’t move from right guard to center until Week 9, with the Aaron Rodgers-less Jets winning just three of Tippmann’s 10 starts from that point forward. Rodgers’ return from the Achilles injury that cost him all but four offensive snaps in 2023 should make life easier for Tippmann at the point of attack. The four-time MVP quarterback can alleviate some of the stress on Tippmann to make all the calls at the line while helping the young pivot master some of the nuances of playing the position. As a scrappy blocker with exceptional length and athleticism, the former second-rounder could settle into his role in Year 2 and show more dominance after flashing blue-chip potential.

The Jets revamped their offensive line this offseason, bringing in left tackle Tyron Smith, guard John Simpson and right tackle Morgan Moses. But the middle of the offensive line is set for years to come thanks to the quick emergence of Tippmann, the Jets’ second-round pick out of Wisconsin in 2023.

Many may not know of Tippmann quite yet, but another strong season in 2024 and he’ll be a household name sooner rather than later.

Former Wisconsin OL included on All-Breakout offense by PFF

The 2024 NFL season is right around the corner and Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus released his All-Breakout Offense earlier this week. One notable inclusion: former Wisconsin Badgers center Joe Tippmann.

Tippmann was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft by the New York Jets and went on to appear in 16 contests during his rookie campaign. Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is now set to return from the torn Achilles entering 2024, so plenty of eyes will be on Tippmann and the Jets’ offensive line.

The Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, which is the longest drought in the league. Pair that with the fact that they’re in one of the most challenging divisions in the NFL. But Tippmann’s stellar play should aid Rodgers in his return as the Jets look to snap a long history of losing.

Also joining New York this offseason was another former Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen, who the team selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Wisconsin was also represented in PFF’s All-Defense Breakout Team with Steelers interior defensive lineman Keeanu Benton being included.

The trio should become a significant source of short-yardage touchdowns for the Jets when the season kicks off in September.

Allen was the No. 134 selection in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He was the 10th running back selected, five draft slots behind former Wisconsin and Louisville RB Isaac Guerendo.

The three-year starter with the Badgers figures to act as the primary backup to Jets starter Breece Hall, though he should still play a big role in short-yardage situations. The running back enters the NFL after a decorated college career that included 3,494 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns over three seasons.

Tippmann, meanwhile, was the Jets second-round pick in 2023 and started 14 games at center for the team last season.

They are looking to help turn around a Jets franchise that went 7-10 in 2023 after star quarterback Rodgers tore his achilles in Week 1. Expectations are high with Rodgers back healthy for the 2024 season.

Allen, Tippmann and the rest of the Jets are in the midst of OTA workouts, which span from May 20 to June 7. Those precede mandatory minicamp from June 11-13 before training camp in July.

Pair of former Wisconsin football teammates reunited in New York

Pair of former Wisconsin football teammates reunited in New York

The 2024 NFL Draft is on its final day and former Wisconsin Badgers running back Braelon Allen was selected in the fourth round (134th overall) by the New York Jets. He will reunite with offensive lineman Joe Tippmann, who was picked by New York in 2023.

Allen spent three seasons with Wisconsin, compiling 3,494 total rushing yards while scoring 35 times on the ground. He ran behind Tippmann for his first two campaigns in Madison and the pair will now look to repeat their success with the Jets.

[lawrence-related id=75598]

New York already has a bell-cow running back in Breece Hall, who rushed for 994 yards and five touchdowns in 2023 on 223 carries. With Allen now in town, the organization will likely attempt to scale back Hall’s touches to protect his body, which is a smart move considering Hall has already suffered a torn ACL during his NFL career.

Operating in an offense with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Allen could find himself a few more holes to run through than he has in the last couple years in Madison.

Joe Tippmann named to Pro Football Writers All-Rookie team

Joe Tippmann named to Pro Football Writers All-Rookie team

Jets center Joe Tippmann was seen as one of the top prospects at the center position entering the 2023 NFL Draft and had a chance to make an early impact. He did just that for the Jets and was one of the top rookie offensive linemen this season.

The members of the Pro Football Writers of America agreed and recognized him by placing him on the organization’s All-Rookie Team at center for the 2023 season.

Tippmann started 14 games for the Jets in his debut season. He initially started at right guard in Week 3 due to injuries before Connor McGovern’s injury in Week 8 moved Tippmann over to center, where he would start the rest of the season.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was named Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year while Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. was named Defensive Rookie of the Year.
