If the season ended today, Michigan State basketball would be a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament — according to Joe Lunardi of ESPN.

Lunardi — who is known for his season-long NCAA Tournament bracket projections — released an updated “seed list” on Monday, with the Spartans coming in as a No. 3 seed. He officially listed Michigan State as the No. 12 overall team — which comes out as the lowest No. 3 seed.

Michigan State is the second-highest ranked BigTen team in Lunardi’s seed list, behind only Purdue, who is the final No. 1 seed.

Michigan State remains safely in the NCAA Tournament field in the latest update of ESPN’s bracketology from Joe Lunardi.

Lunardi released an updated bracket prediction for the upcoming 2021-22 college basketball season on Monday, and the Spartans are still listed as a No. 5 seed. That’s where Michigan State was listed in Lunardi’s previous bracket update.

Lunardi currently has the Spartans opening up against UAB in an East Region first round match-up. In this bracket prediction, Michigan State would most likely face No. 4 seed Tennessee in the second round.

Michigan State drops in latest updated ESPN Bracketology

Michigan State has taken a slight dip in Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology.

Michigan State has taken a slight dip in Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology.

Lunardi released an updated bracket projection on ESPN on Tuesday morning, with the Spartans sitting as a No. 5 seed in the East Region. In this projection, the Spartans would face the winner of Colorado State-Richmond.

In Lunardi’s first batch of bracketology last month, the Spartans were a No. 4 seed so Michigan State has moved down one seed line in the past few weeks. I’m guessing that is in relation to the recent roster changes, including Aaron Henry declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft.

Other Big Ten teams listed in Lunardi’s updated batch of bracketology are Michigan (No. 1 seed), Purdue (No. 2 seed), Ohio State (No. 2 seed), Maryland (No. 3 seed), Illinois (No. 6 seed), Indiana (No. 7 seed),  and Iowa (No. 11 seed). Joey brackets has Northwestern and Wisconsin as two of the “Next Four Out” as well.

Michigan State listed as No. 4 seed in ESPN’s first 2021-22 Bracketology

No play-in game for Michigan State next year, according to Joe Lunardi of ESPN.

No play-in game for Michigan State next year, according to Joe Lunardi of ESPN.

Lunardi released his first batch of bracketology for the 2021-22 college basketball season, and he believes the Spartans will fare much better next season. Lunardi has Michigan State as a No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region playing No. 13 seed Colegate. In Lunardi’s projected bracket, the Spartans would potentially play Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Other Big Ten teams listed in Lunardi’s first batch of bracketology are Michigan (No. 2 seed), Purdue (No. 2 seed), Ohio State (No. 2 seed), Maryland (No. 3 seed), Indiana (No. 7 seed), Illinois (No. 8 seed) and Northwestern (No. 11 seed). Joey brackets has Wisconsin as one of the “Next Four Out” as well.

With how the Spartans’ roster currently sits, a No. 4 seed seems about right. Michigan State does have two open scholarships currently so I would think this seed line would only go up depending on who is added to the roster via the transfer portal or a potential early enrollment for mega 5-star recruit Emoni Bates.
