Jodie Foster clarifies that she did NOT set up Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers

Foster thanked Rodgers in her Golden Globes speech.

The connection between Golden Globe-winning actress Jodie Foster and Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers continues to be the best — and sort of confusing! — sports/culture crossover story lately.

It started with the NFL MVP shouting out Foster in his acceptance speech (along with his fiancee, who turned out to be actress Shailene Woodley, but we’ll get to that in a sec). Foster — who’s a huge Packers fan — said she’s never met Rodgers. Yet she thanked Rodgers in her acceptance speech when she won a Golden Globe for The Mauritanian on Sunday.

It’s all come full circle, but there’s a lingering question: was Foster somehow responsible for getting Woodley — her Mauritanian co-star — and Rodgers together even though they’ve never met?

Nope. From USA TODAY:

Foster denied reports that she introduced Woodley to Rodgers. The actress has never met him. “I didn’t set up Shailene and Aaron. I have never met Aaron Rodgers,” said Foster.

But she admitted being especially enthusiastic about the quarterback and her team, so that might have played a factor in lighting the flames of love.

“It is possible that I do like to talk about how much I love the Green Bay Packers. Sometimes I can talk a little bit too much about that,” said Foster, laughing. “So of course Shailene is very aware of my enthusiasm for the team.”

OK, so here’s my theory: Woodley told Rodgers to shout out Foster in his speech, knowing how much that would delight Foster. Which is still pretty awesome!

Possible reasons why Jodie Foster thanked Aaron Rodgers in her Golden Globes speech

What’s going on with Aaron Rodgers and Jodie Foster?

Earlier this month Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers surprised a lot of people by announcing during his NFL MVP acceptance speech that he was engaged to who we later found out is actress Shailene Woodley, who he had been dating for a few months.

Rodgers also confused a lot of people when, during that same speech, he thanked legendary actress Jodie Foster. It was just so random.

On Sunday night at the Golden Globes Foster won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her performance in The Mauritanian and gave Rodgers a shoutout during her acceptance speech.

Because of course.

Here’s Foster thanking the NFL MVP:

So why did she do that? I’m not entirely sure (I really have no clue) but here are some possible reasons why:

1. She’s a nice person and thought it would be nice to return the favor.

2. Woodley is in The Mauritanian and maybe Foster somehow got the couple together or has been nice to them. Again, I have no clue and my research for this was done by reading tweets written by strangers.

3. Foster told Jimmy Kimmel a few weeks ago that Rodgers “knows I’m his biggest fan.” So maybe her love for the way Rodgers plays quarterback has inspired her to be even better at her job and for that he deserves a thank you. Again, I got NO CLUE. Wait, more research shows that she told Conan O’Brien a few years ago that she loved the Packers… so this could be it! Probably not, though.

4. She enjoys how random this all is and decided to keep it going to have more fun. Again, no clue. Though I feel like this one could be the one.

Twitter loved the shoutout:

Actor Jodie Foster says she is Aaron Rodgers’ biggest fan

Two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster is proud to say she is Aaron Rodgers’ biggest fan

When making his MVP speech, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers gave shoutouts to his team. He also threw in a name that made ears perk up: two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster.

Foster addressed the attention earlier this week on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The Green Bay Packers’ part of the discussion starts at 2:20.

“He just knows I’m his biggest fan,” Foster said while adding the shoutout made her an official Green Bay Packer.

“I’m a big Packers fan.” She added, “You see, he said ‘my team,’ even though he said ‘off the field.’ That makes me a Green Bay Packer. People keep saying to me, ‘No, Jodie, that does not mean you’re part of the team.’ But it does mean I’m part of the team.”

When asked if she’d thank Rodgers should “The Mauritanian” win a Golden Globe at the end of the month, she said, “Absolutely. I may have to name the whole team. [Packers wide receiver] Davante Adams has to be in there somewhere.”

Foster co-stars with Shailene Woodley, Rodgers’ fiancee, in the film. She says that is a coincidence rather than more about her fandom of the quarterback.

Jodie Foster addresses Aaron Rodgers’ random shoutout of her in his NFL MVP speech

What was that all about?

The biggest thing everyone focused on when Aaron Rodgers delivered his acceptance speech for NFL MVP was the fact that he thanked his “fiancee” amid reports that he and actress Shailene Woodley were an item.

But within that speech was also a shoutout to actress Jodie Foster.

The connection, some thought? Foster is in The Mauritanian, who just so happens to co-star … Shailene Woodley. Could she have connected Woodley and Rodgers somehow?

But as Foster said on Thursday night while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, she doesn’t know Rodgers at all, but she knows “I’m his biggest fan.” They did go on to talk about Woodley, but in the context of Foster and her hanging out while filming together:

Foster is, in fact, a huge Packers fan, as she told Conan O’Brien in 2016:

So there you go! That’s the connection.
