UFC Tampa headliner Joaquin Buckley: Colby Covington’s fake character ‘has no value anymore’

Joaquin Buckley sees right through Colby Covington’s gimmick ahead of Saturday’s UFC Tampa main event.

TAMPA, Fla. – [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] sees right through [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag]’s gimmick entering their UFC on ESPN 63 main event clash.

Although Covington has downplayed knowledge of his opponent in Saturday’s welterweight headliner at Amalie Arena (ESPN2, ESPN+), Buckley said all of that is completely untrue after he’s had multiple interactions with “Chaos” in the past.

In fact, Buckley (21-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) said they’ve even shared the same training room at MMA Masters in Miami, which he believes makes Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) “nervous” going into their encounter this weekend. However, he doesn’t expect him to show that outwardly.

“Why you lying, Colby? That’s the funniest thing,” Buckley told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 63 media day. “We’ve met each other before, and this will be our third time meeting each other again if we get to face off. I already met this guy, and I feel like the dude he portrays is obviously a character. Everybody knows it. It’s not a secret.

“Everybody knows he’s trying to do the WWE persona, and I feel like it got him very far and got him exactly where he needs to be, but now it’s getting kind of old. It has no value anymore. I feel like right now is a great opportunity to push this fight and push my name and push my brand.”

Buckley: Covington fight ‘way bigger’ than original UFC Tampa matchup

Buckley was originally scheduled to fight Ian Machado Garry at UFC on ESPN 63, but when Machado Garry was moved into the UFC 310 co-main event vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov, it was Covington who stepped in as the replacement.

Although he was keen to mix it up with Machado Garry, there’s a lot of upside to the Covington matchup that Buckley embraces.

“I wanted that fight,” Buckley said. “Of course, we was promoting Buck vs. Cuck, and that was going to be one of the biggest things around. But at the end of the day, I feel like me and Colby, that’s a big fight, too. He has won the interim title, he’s a person that has fought for the title three times, even though he lost. He’s got a big name. He has a big persona.

“He’s got big connections with the president (Donald Trump). I don’t know if the president is going to be there, but if someone like that is watching my fight, it’s a big deal. It’s historic. So with that being said, I feel like the Colby fight is way bigger than the Ian Garry fight.”

Buckley: Best version of Covington ‘no match for me’

Buckley is the betting favorite going into UFC on ESPN 63 after going on a 5-0 run since dropping to the welterweight division. There are many questions around Covington, who hasn’t competed since a December 2023 title-fight loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296, which came on the heels of an almost two-year layoff.

At 36, many in the MMA community are looking at this fight as a gauge of what Covington has left in his career. And Buckley is ready to provide those answers.

“That’s up to him (to show what he has left),” Buckley said. “We can all judge off the last performance. Hhe wasn’t that good. I feel like the best performance I’ve seen from Colby Covington was against either RDA or Jorge Masvidal. That was his prime conditions where he was pushing the pace and showing his dominant style. But yet again, he said he took another year off to get back to the person he was, so I’m expecting the best version of Colby. But I feel like even the best version of Colby is no match for me.”

Gilbert Burns can see Colby Covington exposing Joaquin Buckley at UFC on ESPN 63

Gilbert Burns thinks Colby Covington has the style to pose problems for Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa.

[autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] has the style to pose problems for Joaquin Buckley.

Former interim welterweight champion Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) takes on Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 63 main event at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. (ESPN2, ESPN+).

Burns points to Buckley’s loss to Logan Storley at Bellator 197 in 2018 – a fight which prompted Buckley to move up to middleweight – as a reason to favor Covington.

“I think Buckley’s in the best momentum right now, but (wrestling is) Buckley’s kryptonite,” Burns told Submission Radio. “One of my favorite teammates is Logan Storley, he was the interim Bellator champ, he fought Buckley, and Logan just outwrestled him.

“He just took him down, beat him up with ground-and-pound, took him down again, beat him up with ground-and-pound. Destroyed him with ground-and-pound, and that’s something that Colby really can do.”

Since moving back down to welterweight, Buckley is 5-0, most recently knocking out Stephen Thompson at UFC 307 in October. However, former title challenger Burns thinks if Covington can weather an early storm, he’ll swarm Buckley.

“Colby’s always training,” Burns said. “I know those guys from MMA Masters, Daniel Valverde and Cesar Carneiro, they say that he’s always in the gym. The guy is always training, he’s always in shape. I think Colby might give a lot of problems to Buckley, keep taking him down with that crazy pace.

“Buckley’s a big guy with a lot of muscle. If Buckley cannot put Colby out of there in the first or the second round, I think Colby will overwhelm him and beat him up. Colby can get maybe a dominant decision win, or Buckley can get a quick knockout in the first or in the second round.”

Joaquin Buckley: Ian Machado Garry beats Shavkat Rakhmonov ‘by the skin of his teeth’ at UFC 310

Joaquin Buckley sees Ian Machado Garry doing just enough to beat Shavkat Rakhmonov.

[autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] sees [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] doing just enough to beat [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag].

Machado Garry (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) meets fellow unbeaten contender Rakhmonov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in a five-round welterweight bout Dec. 7 at UFC 310 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) was originally scheduled to face Machado Garry at UFC on ESPN 63, before the Irishman was pulled to step in against Rakhmonov a week prior at UFC 310. Although Rakhmonov poses serious threat, Buckley thinks Machado Garry will stick and move his way to a victory.

“A lot of people are not going to believe me, but I think Ian Garry is going to win – by the skin of his teeth just like the rest of his wins that he had,” Buckley told Middle Easy. “Whether that’s with MVP or with Geoff Neal. He does a good job of staying safe and surviving, and if you don’t have the feet to kind of hunt down guys like that, where they’re constantly moving and constantly evading, and you set up traps.

“Obviously, you’re not going to be able to land those power shots. … If you get in the fire with Shavkat Rakhmonov, you’re going to get burned. But I don’t see Ian Garry running into that burning house. He’s going to try to flee and evade the whole time, and I can see Ian Garry getting his hand raised by decision.”

Buckley may have lost out on his fight against Machado Garry, but will still get a big opportunity. He takes on former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) in the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner on Dec. 14 from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Joaquin Buckley hunting for finish against Colby Covington in UFC on ESPN 63 headliner

Joaquin Buckley’s approach against Colby Covington will be no different.

[autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag]’s approach against [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] will be no different.

Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) meets former interim welterweight champion Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) in the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner on Dec. 14 from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Covington has only been stopped by strikes once in his career – a TKO stoppage to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245, which he contested was too early. Buckley, who’s knocked out three of his past five opponents, will look to be the first to shut Covington’s lights off.

“He will argue that he wasn’t knocked out, that he wasn’t finished, and he’s right,” Buckley told Middle Easy. “He wasn’t knocked out unconscious. I really feel like for me, though, and the style that I bring, we’re two types of fighters who want to take the middle of the cage and really impose our will.

“So we’re going to figure out who does the best job at that and figure out who makes it to the judges’ cards or who doesn’t. I hate going to the judges. My biggest thing is, I always want to get the finish, and I’m always fighting hard to get the finish – so we’ll see.”

But above just about anything else, Buckley thinks he’s already the type of fighter who should get a title shot – and a big win over Covington might seel the deal.

“I really feel like it wouldn’t be no arguments once I go out there and put on a dominant performance on Colby Covington. It’s just, yet again: Why not give me an opportunity to fight for the title?” Buckley said.

“You know it’s going to be fun to watch. Whether I win, lose, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, it’s the entertainment business. So why not give me the chance and opportunity to fight for the belt?”

Ian Machado Garry rooting for Joaquin Buckley to beat ‘b*tch’ Colby Covington at UFC on ESPN 63

Ian Machado Garry went off on Colby Covington after their fight didn’t materialize.

[autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] went off on [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] after their fight didn’t materialize.

Machado Garry (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) spent months campaigning to fight Covington, accusing him for turning down a bout offer on multiple occasions. Machado Garry wound up getting booked against [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner on Dec. 14 from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla..

However, when welterweight champion Belal Muhammad was forced out of his title defense against Shavkat Rakhmonov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) Dec. 7 at UFC 310, the promotion opted to pull Machado Garry out of his fight with Buckley, and schedule him against Rakhmonov.

Then in came Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC), who stepped in against Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC), which Machado Garry finds comical.

“He’s been ducking me for f*cking 7-8 months,” Machado Garry said on Instagram. “I signed for the baddest man in the division and this guy comes out of the shadows. He is a p*ssy, he’s a b*tch, and one day I will get my hands on him.”

Machado Garry sent his support to Buckley, hoping that the knockout artist is able to take out Covington.

“Joaquin Buckley, I am behind you 100 percent of the way,” Machado Garry added. “Go out and put that man to sleep. Please and thank you. Do it for me because he’s not able to do it against me.”

Colby Covington vs. Joaquin Buckley: Odds and what to know ahead of UFC Tampa headliner

The oddsmakers believe Colby Covington will lose to the streaking Joaquin Buckley in the UFC on ESPN 63 main event.

[autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] will make a surprising short-notice return to the octagon after one year away when he steps into the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner with [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag], who is unbeaten since dropping to welterweight.

Colby Covington vs. Joaquin Buckley preview

Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) hasn’t seen action since December 2023 when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to then-champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296. The defeated dropped “Chaos” to 0-3 in undisputed UFC title fights, and the matchup with Buckley will give him a chance to register his first win over an active member of the UFC roster.

Looking to halt the brash surging contender will be a powerhouse player in Buckley (21-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who has put in solid work during his 4-0 run at 170 pounds, which includes stoppages of former title challenger Stephen Thompson and longtime contender Vicente Luque.

Colby Covington vs. Joaquin Buckley odds

DraftKings released the opening odds, in which Buckley is a +145 betting favorite over Covington, who is a -175 underdog.

Henry Cejudo sees Joaquin Buckley stopping Colby Covington at UFC on ESPN 63

Henry Cejudo thinks Colby Covington will struggle against Joaquin Buckley at UFC on ESPN 63.

[autotag]Henry Cejudo[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] will struggle against [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag].

Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) stepped in to face rising welterweight contender Buckley (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in the UFC on ESPN 63 headliner Dec. 14 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Covington has split his past six appearances, but his setbacks have come in title fights against Kamaru Usman twice, and most recently Leon Edwards. Cejudo doesn’t see Covington posing any threats to Buckley.

“The style that Colby Covington is doing is so predictable now,” Cejudo said on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast with Kamaru Usman. “The fact that they see him lose time and time again, whether it’s with Leon Edwards or yourself (Usman), it’s there. Once you stop Colby’s takedowns, things will fall into place.

“Look at how Joaquin covers distance, bro. Double feints, dipping in to eventually stop a dude like ‘Wonderboy.’ So, I’m high on this kid. This kid is dangerous. I can see Colby Covington losing via stoppage to a guy like Joaquin Buckley, and I truly do believe that.”

Since dropping back down to 170 pounds, Buckley has won five straight, most recently knocking out former title challenger Stephen Thompson at UFC 307 in October. Meanwhile, Covington hasn’t competed since a unanimous decision loss to Edwards in their title fight at UFC 296 last December.

[autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] said he was going to call Hunter Campbell on Monday to ask for a fight against [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag].

It appears the promotion had other plans. Instead, Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) will face [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] (20-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in a five-round welterweight UFC on ESPN 63 headliner Dec. 14 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., promotion CEO Dana White announced Saturday.

Covington, 36, replaces [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag], who slides back a week to face Rakhmonov after champion Belal Muhammad pulled out. He’s 1-2 in his most recent three.

Buckley, 30, seeks his sixth-straight victory in what will be his first promotional main event. He most recently competed in October when he knocked out Stephen Thompson.
