Anthony Smith replaces Johnny Walker, meets Jimmy Crute at UFC 261 in April

Anthony Smith is stepping up after Johnny Walker went down with a torn pectoral muscle.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] is back.

The former UFC title challenger has agreed to take on [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag], replacing an injured Johnny Walker. Crute and Smith will face off April 24 at UFC 261, which does not yet have a confirmed location.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie following an initial report from ESPN on Tuesday.

Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) was originally scheduled to fight March 27 at UFC 260, but Walker was forced to withdraw because of a torn pectoral muscle. Crute labeled Smith as a bigger and better fight for his career. The Australian is on a two-fight winning streak with his last performance a first-round knockout over Modestas Bukauskas back in October.

[lawrence-related id=570383,570010,587334]

Like Crute, Smith (34-16 MMA, 9-6 UFC) will clock in his first fight of 2021. The 32-year-old last fought in November when he snapped a two-fight losing streak with a submission win over Devin Clark in the main event of UFC on ESPN 18.

With the addition, the latest UFC 261 lineup includes:

  • Uriah Hall vs. Chris Weidman
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Anthony Smith

Torn pectoral muscle forces Johnny Walker out of UFC 260 fight vs. Jimmy Crute

Johnny Walker has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming fight vs. Jimmy Crute at UFC 260.

[autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming fight due to injury.

Walker (18-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC), who was scheduled to face [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] on March 27 at at UFC 260, has suffered a torn pectoral muscle that will require surgery. MMA Junkie confirmed the injury after an initial report from MMA Fighting.

In an Instagram post late Monday night, Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) claimed he already has a replacement opponent that’s a bigger and better name than Walker.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLDrK3FjLeQ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

A wise man called @danielkellyjudo once told me “in a sport that’s supposed to be full of tough guys you’d be surprised at how many pussies there are in this sport” very true words. Disappointed that my opponent has ducked me yet again but I can’t say that I am surprised that being said I can’t express how excited and grateful I am that a true fighter has decided to step in and fight me. This is a better fight, better name and bigger challenge but I’m ready for it.

Currently training out of SBG Ireland, Walker bounced back from a two-fight losing streak with a first-round knockout over Ryan Spann last September.

Crute is coming off back-to-back first-round “Performance of the Night” finishes over Michal Oleksiejczuk and Modestas Bukauskas. All four of the Aussie’s UFC wins have come by stoppage.

With the change, the latest UFC 260 lineup now includes:

  • Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou – for heavyweight title
  • Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega – for featherweight title
  • Jimmy Crute vs. TBA
  • Modestas Bukauskas vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk
  • Hannah Goldy vs. Jessica Penne
  • Vicente Luque vs. Tyron Woodley
  • Thomas Almeida vs. Sean O’Malley

Jimmy Crute vs. Johnny Walker added to UFC Fight Night on March 27

A matchup of light heavyweight bangers has been agreed upon for the UFC’s March 27 card.

A light heavyweight fight that promises to be a banger is in the works for the March 27 UFC Fight Night.

Rising stars [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] and [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] have agreed to meet at the event, which does not yet have a location or venue. MMA Junkie confirmed through sources with knowledge of the matchup an initial Saturday report by ESPN.

The Australian Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is coming off a 2020 campaign in which he fought twice, earned a pair of first-round finishes, and got “Performance of the Night” bonuses for both. Nine of his 12 career wins have occurred inside the distance.

Walker (18-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC), meanwhile, is looking to cement the idea he’s back on track. The Brazilian’s UFC career started with three straight first-round losses, followed by back-to-back flat performances in losses. Now affiliated with SBG Ireland, Walker returned to the win column on Sept. 19 with a knockout over Ryan Spann in a fast and wild fight.

The fight is the first put together for the March 27 card.

UFC free fight: Jimmy Crute arrives with slick finish of Michał Oleksiejczuk

See why Jimmy Crute emerged as one of the most exciting young stars in the light heavyweight division in 2020.

[autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] marked himself as one to watch in the UFC’s light heavyweight division in 2020.

The young Australian fought twice this year, and earned “Performance of the Night” both times.

And while his October knockout of Modestas Bukauskas was impressive, the win which really put him on the map occurred at UFC Auckland in February.

There, Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) took on a well-established foe in Michał Oleksiejczuk. Crute spent the better part of the fight out-grappling his foe, and turned it into an impressive Kimura submission at the 3:29 mark of the opening round.

Crute doesn’t yet have his next fight lined up. But given what we saw from him in 2020, whenever that fight is announced, it will no doubt it will be one to watch. In the meantime, the UFC has made his outstanding finish of Oleksiejczuk free to view, and you can watch it in the video above.

Jimmy Crute wants Nikita Krylov for his ‘Kyokushin spirit’ after UFC on ESPN+ 38 knockout

Jimmy Crute is keen on a clash with Nikita Krylov following a brutal knockout win at UFC on ESPN+ 38.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] is keen on a clash with [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag] following a brutal knockout win at UFC on ESPN+ 38.

Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) scored a highlight-reel first-round knockout of Modestas Bukauskas (11-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in their featured light heavyweight bout on Saturday’s card, which took place at Flash Forum at Yas Island. He was rewarded a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his efforts, but said he wasn’t particularly pleased with it.

Although Crute said he gave Bukauskas the utmost respect coming in, he felt like the result was a forgone conclusion from the moment he signed the contract, so the high of victory wasn’t as great as normal.

“I’m not as happy as I usually am after a win, but I think it’s because I think I knew I was going to win this time,” Crute told reporters, including MMA Junkie, post-fight at UFC on ESPN+ 38. “I did all the work necessary. I did all the work and then some. I’ve been training for a fight since June. I haven’t stopped. I haven’t let it up.”

Following his victory, Crute said during his in-cage interview with Daniel Cormier that Krylov (26-7 MMA, 8-5 UFC) would be an appealing fight for him next. The Ukrainian has nearly three times the pro experience Crute has, and has 26 of his 27 career victories by finish.

That’s an appealing test Crute said, but if the UFC sees a different path for him, he’s all for it.

“I like (Krylov) because he has Kyokushin spirit,” Crute said. “I just like him. I reckon that’d be a banger. It’d be the toughest of my career. But if not, I’ll fight anyone. I don’t give a (expletive).”

UFC on ESPN+ 38 video: Jimmy Crute scores nasty KO of Modestas Bukauskas

Jimmy Crute brutalized Modestas Bukauskas in the first round of their featured matchup at UFC on ESPN+ 38.

[autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] brutalized [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] in the first round of their featured matchup on Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 38.

Crute (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) needed minimal time to show how much of a difference his power could make when he connected clean on Bukauskas (11-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) for the knockout just over two minutes into the light heavyweight matchup, which took place at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Watch the video of Crute’s handiwork below (via Twitter):

Crute came ready with a name in the aftermath of his highlight-reel finish. He said he wants a matchup with Nikita Krylov next during his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.

UFC on ESPN+ 38 takes place Saturday at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Brian Ortega[/autotag] (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) takes on “The Korean Zombie,” [autotag]Chan Sung Jung[/autotag] (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC), in a matchup between former featherweight title challengers. Jungn is a 2-1 favorite in the fight, but it’s a close fight in the picks from our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts. They’re taking Jung, but just at an 8-6 clip.

In the co-feature, former strawweight champion [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] (20-8 MMA, 11-6 UFC) takes on recent women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in a bout at 125 pounds. Andrade is the mild favorite, and she’s got a big 11-3 picks lead.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in a light heavyweight bout. Crute is the biggest favorite on the main card, but he’s only got an 8-6 picks lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Thomas Almeida[/autotag] (22-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) fights [autotag]Jonathan Martinez[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) at bantamweight. Almeida is returning from a lengthy layoff and is a slight favorite at the sports books. He’s also got a 10-4 lead from our pickers.

Modestas Bukauskas vs. Jimmy Crute added to UFC’s Oct. 17 fight card

A matchup between light heavyweight prospects Jimmy Crute and Modestas Bukauskas is the latest addition to the UFC’s Oct. 17 event.

A matchup between two international light heavyweights is the latest addition to the UFC’s Oct. 17 event.

Australia’s [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will face Lithuanian [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a battle of rising prospects at 205 pounds. No location or name designation has been announced for the event at this time.

MMA Junkie verified the booking with multiple people close to the situation following an initial announcement by the UFC’s Australia and New Zealand Instagram account.

After suffering his first career pro loss to Misha Cirkunov last September, Crute rebounded with a first-round submission of Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC on ESPN+ 26 that earned him a “Performance of the Night” bonus. The Contender Series graduate has finished all three of his UFC wins to date.

Former Cage Warriors light heavyweight champion Bukauskas made good in his UFC debut, stopping fellow newcomer Andreas Michailidis at UFC on ESPN 13 in Abu Dhabi.

With the addition, the current Oct. 17 lineup includes:

  • Poliana Botelho vs. Gillian Robertson
  • Krzysztof Jotko vs. Makhmud Muradov
  • Modestas Bukauskas vs. Jimmy Crute

The Nominees

Daniel Rodriguez def. Tim Means at UFC on ESPN+ 25

[autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) rose to the occasion in his UFC debut, taking out Tim Means (29-12-1 MMA, 11-9 UFC), a 21-fight veteran of the organization, in the second round of their welterweight bout.

After battering Means on the feet and putting him in serious danger of a knockout, Rodriguez changed his attack to a standing guillotine choke. It went in deep, and shortly thereafter Means tapped and the fight was over.

Alex Polizzi def. Jamal Pogues at LFA 82

[autotag]Alex Polizzi[/autotag] (6-0) scored his ticket to a Bellator contract by claiming the LFA light heavyweight title with a submission finish of Jamal Pogues (7-3) in the championship rounds.

Although submissions decrease in likelihood later into fights, Polizzi snatched the leg of Pogues in the early stages of the fourth round and locked in a heel hook. Pogues tapped out, and Polizzi remained undefeated in his young career.

Georgi Karakhanyan def. Paul Redmond at Bellator Europe 7

In his return to the lightweight division, [autotag]Georgi Karakhanyan[/autotag] (29-10-1 MMA, 7-8 BMMA) picked up a much-needed win against Paul Redmond (15-9 MMA, 2-1 BMMA).

After going on a three-fight drought, Karakhanyan had an entertaining battle with Redmond before locking in a guillotine choke in the early stages of the round to finish the fight and get his hand raised for the first time in 21 months.

Jimmy Crute def. Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC on ESPN+ 26

[autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) rebounded from the first loss of his career with an impressive finish of Michal Oleksiejczuk (14-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in their light heavyweight matchup.

Crute put his sizable ground advantage to use when he put Oleksiejczuk on his back and synched in a Kimura to elicit the tap in just over three minutes.

Jordan Griffin def. TJ Brown via guillotine choke at UFC on ESPN+ 27

Just when it seemed he was not going to get the finish, [autotag]Jordan Griffin[/autotag] (18-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) choked TJ Brown (14-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) out cold.

Attempting to lock in a guillotine choke from bottom position, Griffin’s attempt to finish the fight appeared that it would be unfruitful. Seconds later, though, the fight was over and Griffin had his first UFC win.

* * * *

The Winner: Jordan Griffin

[vertical-gallery id=495276]

Griffin’s first UFC win was an impressive one.

After going 0-2 with two unanimous decision losses to kick off his octagon tenure, Griffin needed to get his hand raised in order to ensure his future with the organization.

He did just that, and in slick fashion, no less.

Griffin went for a usual guillotine choke while on bottom, which cageside commentator Michael Bisping wrote off as having any real chance of finishing the fight. He was wrong, however, because Griffin was able to finish the fight with a useful technique.

“I love that choke – that’s one of my go-to submissions,” Griffin said. “When you hook that in over the shoulder, it’s almost impossible to escape. People think they can circle around because their legs are free, but that actually makes it tighter. As soon as I locked it in, I knew it was over and that he was out. That’s my black belt killer right there.”

Callout Collection: Who UFC Auckland winners want next – and how likely they’ll get them

Dan Hooker, Brad Riddell and Angela Hill were among those with specific names in mind for their next fight after UFC on ESPN+ 26 in Auckland.

Earning wins in the UFC is certainly no easy task, but what comes next is often even more important: the post-fight callout.

So after Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 26 event in Auckland, New Zealand, who took advantage of their time on the mic? See below for this week’s Callout Collection – and just how realistic each one is.

* * * * *

First up, let’s take a look at the night’s prelim winners.

Angela Hill

Wants to fight: Karolina Kowalkiewicz

The callout: “I feel like everyone is booked right now, but I’d love to fight Karolina if she wins today. Even if she doesn’t, I’d like that fight. It would be a great matchup. That’s always been a fight I’ve wanted. I’m willing to fight anyone, but Karolina’s at the top of the list because our schedules line up.”

The reality: [autotag]Karolina Kowalkiewicz[/autotag] didn’t win her fight in Auckland, and that could play heavily into any possibility of a matchup with [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] being booked. The Pole has now lost four in a row, and that’s the sort of form that can often lead to a parting of ways. But Kowalkiewicz (12-6 MMA, 5-6 UFC) remains a popular fighter, and a matchup with Hill (12-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC) may still be considered worthwhile, especially on a European card, later in the year. Stylistically, it would certainly produce an exciting fight, and with Kowalkiewicz likely fighting in the last chance saloon, it would be a fight with the highest of stakes.

[opinary poll=”how-interested-are-you-in-seeing-angela–l9xNbJ” customer=”mmajunkie”]

Next up, let’s check out the main card.
