Seven potential trade destinations for Jimmy Butler

The Miami Heat are a third of the way through their season, and they are not where they want to be. A 13-11 record to date is good enough for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference as things stand, yet the Heat never do sixth seeds on purpose. As much as any NBA franchise, they eschew the rebuilds and the bottoming-out process, instead always seeking to keep the can in the air and construct competitive teams from within.

They have been able to do so in recent years due in large part to the excellence of Jimmy Butler. Since acquiring him from the Philadelphia 76ers back in 2019, the six-time All-Star has led Miami to the postseason every year, including two NBA Finals appearances. Playoff Jimmy is a different beast, and the Heat have twice come within three wins of a championship in the Butler Era without being in the NBA’s basement since the days of Dorell Wright.

Butler, though, is deep into the final third of his career. This is his fourteenth NBA season, and as he plays longer, he plays less. Jimmy has never played in more than 64 regular season games while a member of the Heat, and although this has been in part strategic so as to maximize his health for the playoffs, it also means a lot of time and money tied up in a player who spends much of the time on the inactive list.

When the team is good enough to be a high seed, that is manageable, yet the margins are much smaller in the lower seeds. And if the Heat do decide they need to change things up, then by virtue of his upcoming retirement – aged 35, he is already now at an age he once said he would no longer be playing at – Butler might be the best trade candidate. After all, if he abruptly retires, there would be no returning assets at all.

The rumor mill is buzzing with talk of a potential Butler deal, and with trade season beginning in earnest after Christmas, his name will be one of the major ones on the market. There follows a look at seven potential destinations for Butler, should any trade come to pass.

Jimmy Butler seemingly trolled recent Suns trade rumors with new orange hair

Jimmy Butler is a master troll.

It seems like Jimmy Butler is leaning into the recent NBA trade rumors in a big way.

We’re still a few months away from the NBA trade deadline, but recent rumors — stemming from insider John Gambadoro — have linked Butler to the Phoenix Suns. Butler has been part of the Miami Heat for the last six seasons, but the rumor mill has been swirling around the 35-year-old for some time now.

And on Thursday, Butler fanned the flames of the recent rumors by posting pictures of his new orange (!!!) hair to his Instagram story ahead of the Heat’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

Of course, this is Jimmy Butler we’re talking about, so this very much seems like a deliberate troll based on the latest chatter. Plus, this isn’t the first time Butler has changed his hair based on the rumor mill. Add it to the list!

3 possible Jimmy Butler destinations if the Heat trade him

These contenders could try to trade for Jimmy Butler.

The Miami Heat have an interesting decision to make about six-time NBA All-Star wing Jimmy Butler, who could generate some trade interest.

Butler, 35, could become a free agent this offseason if he opts out of his deal and it is unclear whether or not he projects as part of the future of the franchise for Miami.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Butler and Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram are two of the top names to watch before the NBA trade deadline.

Charania reported that Miami is “open to listening to offers” for Butler and potentially “making a deal” for the right offer. He added that it has become clear that Butler has expressed interest in three specific teams.

As of right now, it seems Butler will opt out of his deal and become a free agent at the end of the season. But if he is traded, here are some teams that Butler reportedly wants to play for this season.

Houston Rockets

Butler, who is originally from nearby Houston, could make sense as a consolidation piece on the Rockets. Back in October, the Rockets were mentioned by Marc Stein as a potential destination for Butler as well. It is unclear how many players in Houston’s young core they would be willing to part with, if any, for such a trade.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks have reportedly held interest in Butler since before he was even traded to the Heat in 2019. Earlier this month, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto added that “within league circles, there’s been quiet discourse” about whether the Rockets or Mavericks could emerge as suitors for Butler. But there are financial hurdles that could complicate this fit.

Golden State Warriors

Earlier this season, per Scotto, the Warriors “were among the teams linked” to Butler in a potential trade. The Athletic’s Anthony Slater speculated that the Warriors would “enter the conversation” about Butler in May and Sam Amick reported interest in Butler by Golden State in September.

The Miami Heat’s Thomas Bryant has quietly carved out a solid career as a dependable and efficient big man. Known for his ability to space the floor and provide an interior presence on defense, he is the epitome of professionalism as a role player

After a standout collegiate career at Indiana University, Bryant found his footing with the Washington Wizards, eventually earning a championship ring with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.

Now in Miami, whether as a key role player, a reliable backup, or a mentor, Bryant exemplifies the Heat’s culture of hard work and professionalism.

Bryant spoke with HoopsHype his experience adapting to new roles, playing alongside legends such as LeBron James, Nikola Jokic, and Jimmy Butler, and offering his perspective on generational talents like Victor Wembanyama.

Jimmy Butler sadly showed up to Heat media day without any quirky fashion: ‘No shenanigans’

It was supposed to feel like Halloween for Jimmy Butler.

For some basketball fans, Jimmy Butler was was supposed to make today feel like a holiday. Alas, however, that was not the case.

The six-time NBA All-Star showed up to the Miami Heat media day in 2022 and 2023 dressed in costume. Two years ago, Butler showed up wearing fake dreadlocks. Last season, he appeared wearing a full “goth” outfit dressed like he was in an emo band.

These were the photos that press outlets had to use for him for the entire season. Many were excited to see what Butler would do in 2024 at the annual media day, but he decided to change it up once again this year.

Butler decided to play it more conservatively, though.

Instead of putting on a show, he arrived exactly as he will look during the season. Even though he is a six-time All-Star, he has missed earning such an honor multiple seasons in a row. He also did not sign a contract extension in the offseason.

He told reporters that there are “no shenanigans” this year.

Perhaps that means he is fully locked in on the upcoming season, hoping to return the organization to continued postseason success.

Netflix’s Starting 5 trailer for the NBA version of Drive to Survive is here and it looks amazing

The show features LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards and Domantas Sabonis.

Netflix will soon have a show about the NBA, releasing October 9, and we finally have a trailer to get excited about.

Starting 5 features a primary cast of LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards and Domantas Sabonis. It is a 10-part series that provides an inside look at the 2023-24 NBA season. Each episode is a 45-minute long insight into their lives on and off the court.

This series will operate a bit like Drive to Survive about F1 racing, Break Point about tennis, Quarterback and Receiver about the NFL, as well as Full Swing about golf.

This trailer has some fun moments, including voiceovers from all of the main stars as well as LeBron James’ daughter Zhuri and a weird moment of James dressed as The Joker from Batman.

We also see Anthony Edwards singing, some mic’d up moments on the court, and a lot of the stars hanging with their families.

The series is produced by UNINTERRUPTED (from Maverick Carter) as well as Higher Ground Productions (from Barack and Michelle Obama) and Omaha Productions (from Peyton Manning).

Jimmy Butler celebrated the opening of his new bar by singing Shaboozey on stage

No one has more fun off the court than Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler was back in Chicago this weekend and living his absolute best life.

First he got some work in on the court at UIC’s gym, then he popped over to the Windy City Smokeout to join in the city’s annual BBQ festival — and even hopped on stage with Parker McCollum. But the main event of the trip was the opening of a new downtown bar he partnered with Roquan Smith and Chase Rice on.

The trio christened Welcome to the Farm by rocking out to even more country music, which we already knew Butler is a huge fan of as he works on his own 200-song album.

Naturally, the night involved Butler getting back up on stage to perform a cover of Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song” and this looked like so much fun.

It did appear, in fact, everybody at the bar gettin’ tipsy.

Roquan Smith teams with Jimmy Butler to open new music venue

Roquan Smith and Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler are both part of an ownership group opening a new restaurant and live music venue in Chicago

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith and Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler are both part of an ownership group opening a new restaurant and live music venue in Chicago.

“Welcome to the Farm,” which already has two locations, in St. Petersburg, FL and Cleveland, OH, is a 10,000 square foot space in the River North neighborhood of the second city.

Smith last played for the Chicago Bears in 2022 while Butler last played for the Chicago Bulls in 2017. Their new venture will replace the Fremont, a modern American restaurant and dance club which closed in the past year.

According to Eater Chicago, The Farm “will house a barbecue restaurant, Drinking Pig BBQ, with food from Miami chef Raheem Sealey.”

The main backer in Smith’s new venture is Chase Rice, a singer-songwriter who is most famous for the reality series Survivor.

While the restaurant/club/music venue business is notoriously competitive, with a very low overall success rate, this venture certainly has location on its side.

Smith, Butler, Rice and company are opening a venue that is a very short walk from several major Chicago landmarks: the Magnificent Mile, Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower and the original Billy Goat Tavern.

So there will always be non-stop foot traffic in the area. We’ll see if Roquan and his group can create a destination that capitalizes on that opportunity. Its predecessor could not.

Would the Nets be interested in trading for Heat’s Jimmy Butler?

Would the Brooklyn Nets be interested in trading for Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler? Nets Wire takes a look at whether it makes sense.

The Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of an offseason in which they are looking to improve enough to make it back to the playoffs next season. While the NBA Finals are happening right now, for the other 28 teams watching the championship series from home, almost every player is floated around as a potential addition.

Despite the fact that Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is not expected to be traded this summer per multiple reports, there is still plenty of people wondering if the Heat are truly intent on keeping Butler. The Nets have been floated around as one of the teams that could attempt to trade for Butler given that Brooklyn could be hunting for stars as early as this offseason.

Butler, 34 is coming off a 2023-24 season in which he averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 49.9% from the field and 41.4% from three-point land. Butler was relatively healthy for the Heat this season as he played in 60 games this season, but he was notably unavailable for Miami’s first-round playoff matchup against the Boston Celtics due to a knee injury.

While Pat Riley, the Heat’s president of basketball operations, said that Butler will not be traded, Miami is in an interesting situation as they may have to make a choice soon on whether Butler is the guy to lead the franchise moving forward into his mid-to-late 30’s. For a team like the Nets, Butler would instantly be the best player on the team, but the cost of trading for him could be something that keeps Brooklyn out of the running for his services.

Butler has two years left on his contract and is due to make $48.7 million in 2024-25 while having a player option for 2025-26 worth $52.4 million. Not to mention that Butler is eligible for a two-year, $112.9 million contract extension this summer and reportedly looking for the most he can get on his next deal.

That makes Brooklyn trading for Butler unlikely given that the Nets would have to give up some valuable assets for an aging Butler while also having to sacrifice future cap space to have him on the roster. As good as Butler is, the short-term outlook of such a deal just doesn’t make sense for where Brooklyn is right now.
