Texas A&M fires Jimbo Fisher with $78 million left on his contract

Texas A&M has fired football coach Jimbo Fisher

Jimbo Fisher may be the lone coach in football history — at any level — fired after a 41-point victory.

Texas A&M canned Fisher on Sunday, a day after the Aggies defeated Mississippi State, 51-10.

The school owes $78.5 million to its former coach, who was 45-25 overall, as a buyout.

He was 5-7 last season and Texas A&M stands 6-4 after 10 games in 2023.

The school’s press release:

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Director of Athletics, Ross Bjork, announces change in Aggie football leadership, effective immediately.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President Welsh and then Chancellor Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision. We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Report: Sources indicate that Texas A&M has fired head coach Jimbo Fisher

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher has been fired.

As of Sunday, Nov. 12, Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher has been fired, according to several sources who indicated the news earlier this morning. Associate head coach Elijah Robinson will be promoted as the interim head coach, according to ESPN CFB insider Pete Thamel.

In six seasons at the helm, Fisher finished with a 45-25 overall record and a 27-21 record in SEC play, but outside of the 9-1 finish during the Covid-impacted 2020 season, including a victory in the Orange Bowl. Fisher’s tenure has been woefully underwhelming since, especially when the play on the field failed to match recruiting success in recent seasons.

Coming as a shock to many, TexAgs Co-owner and Executive Editor Billy Liucci was the first break on the story that Fisher may be let go as early as Sunday morning, just days after the Board of Regents met on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Financially, this will cost the program over $76.8 million, as his dense contract is set to expire in 2031, but hey, they knew this all along before the final decision was made.

Texas A&M is fresh off its 51-10 win over Mississippi State less than 24 hours ago. It will now face Abilene Christian next Saturday for yet another early kick-off (11:00 CT.) before taking on LSU on the road in the regular season finale.

Texas A&M reportedly fired Jimbo Fisher, leaving college football fans in awe over how much he’ll be paid to not coach

Fans think Jimbo Fisher is living the American dream.

Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher Sunday morning, according to multiple reports.

The move ends his tenure with the Aggies after five-plus seasons and a 45-25 record, with the program never quite reaching the heights they were hoping for after inking the former Florida State national title-winning coach to a huge contract.

Because of that contract, it’s going to cost Texas A&M a pretty penny to get out of it. To be exact, Fisher’s buyout is for a record $76 million. $76 Ms! To go away!

College football fans couldn’t get over how much Fisher is about to be paid to not coach.

Report: Texas A&M to fire Jimbo Fisher

Who will be the Texas A&M head coach Notre Dame takes on in the 2024 season opener?

Notre Dame opens the 2024 college football season at a location they’ve only played at once before: Texas A&M.

When the Irish do so it appears it’ll be the first game for a new head coach at Texas A&M.  That’s because according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, current Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is expected to be fired.

Fisher is 45-25 in six seasons at Texas A&M.  When he was rumored to be interested in leaving for the then-open LSU job in 2021, Fisher signed a 10-year contract with $95 million guaranteed.

He is expected to be paid in full – good work if you can get it.

Oregon HC Dan Lanning named among leading candidates for Texas A&M job

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has been named as one of the leading candidates for the Texas A&M job after the firing of Jimbo Fisher.

When you have a young head coach who is finding success on the field, fans are going to have to get used to hearing his name thrown about in conversations about open head coaching jobs across the nation, especially when they come at some of the more notable schools in college football. It comes with the territory, and it’s something fans of the Oregon Ducks should be used to by now.

So on Sunday morning, it might not have been a massive surprise to wake up and hear that Ducks’ coach Dan Lanning was being mentioned as one of the leading candidates for the Texas A&M Aggies job, which opened with the firing of Jimbo Fisher.

Fisher, who is 45-25 in his six seasons at College Station, with the Aggies buying out his $78 million contract in full and eating the loss. The program now searches for candidates who can return the program to heights seen early last decade.

It’s understandable why Lanning is seen as one of the leading candidates. In less than two seasons at Oregon, he has coached the Ducks to a 19-4 record. He appears on his way to a spot in the Pac-12 Championship game and, perhaps, a College Football Playoff appearance should Oregon win its remaining games.

As you would expect, the news of Fisher’s firing, and the subsequent speculation about his replacement, fired up social media on Sunday morning, with Oregon fans feeling some type of way. Here’s a look at how fans were reacting:

Jimbo Fisher will receive a record buyout from Texas A&M after reported firing

Texas A&M is reportedly ready to fire Jimbo Fisher, and foot the massive bill.

Texas A&M is expected to fire head coach Jimbo Fisher Sunday after more than five years and a 45-25 record, according to multiple reports.

The move is unsurprising after his underwhelming tenure with the Aggies, though the timing is a little odd after a 41-point win and two games left on the schedule. But don’t feel bad for Fisher. He’s set to receive one of the biggest buyouts any coach has in college football.

Fisher’s buyout will cost Texas A&M $76 million, which is more than three times the amount any coach has received in a buyout.

No one wants to be fired, but if it has to happen, there are certainly worse ways to go out.

Multiple outlets report that Texas A&M will fire Jimbo Fisher on Sunday

Well, that escalated quickly.

It was less than 24 ago the Texas A&M Aggies were celebrating a 41-point win over Mississippi State to become bowl-eligible. Fast forward to Sunday morning and reports surfaced that the Board of Regents met recently to remove head coach Jimbo Fisher from his post.

Fisher had a massive buyout of $77.6 million as of Dec. 1, 2023. The second-highest reported buyout behind Kirby Smart of Georgia and just ahead of Brian Kelly of LSU. The team is expected to have a meeting on Sunday with the coaching staff.

Bobby Petrino was a good candidate to be named the interim head coach for the final two games of the season plus the bowl game. He has head coaching experience from his time at Louisville, Arkansas, and Western Kentucky. However, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports that it will be associate head coach Elijah Robinson, who would serve as the interim.

Fisher will end his tenure in College Station with a record of 45-25 and 27-21 in SEC play. His Aggies have been 11-11 over the last two seasons after winning 34 games over the first four seasons with the Aggies.

Texas A&M will join Michigan State and Northwestern as Power Five schools that will be in the hunt for a new head coach this offseason. They likely won’t be the only ones joining the search. We will continue monitoring the coaching carousel as it begins to pick up speed.

Post Game Recap: Texas A&M blows out Mississippi State 51-10 at Kyle Field

100,000 fans packed Kyle Field and were rewarded with a 51-10 victory over the Bulldogs, securing a bowl game for the Maroon & White

On Saturday night, Texas A&M (6-4, 4-3 SEC) ran away in a big victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-6, 1-6 SEC) at Kyle Field in Bryan-College Station.

After returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Mississippi State Bulldogs were held in check for most of the first half. Early in the game, the biggest question was how third-string transfer QB Jaylen Henderson would handle the starting job. All he did was come into the first half and score two touchdowns on the ground while hitting Ainias Smith for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

The defense was back to its top five ways, harassing the Mississippi State QBs all half. As well as they have been playing, turnovers have been their Achilles’ heel, but that changed today. Deuce Harmon made a diving interception on the Bulldogs’ first drive of the game, then after forcing a three-and-out on the second drive, Tyreek Chappell broke up a pass that Jacoby Mathews was able to pick off on their third drive. A strong Aggie half gave them a comfortable 34-10 lead going into the locker room.

The second half was similar, but the defense started with a splash when Texas A&M safety Jared Kerr tattooed the Mississippi State QB on a blitz, knocking the ball loose. Then, 6’6″ 285 sophomore defensive lineman Shemar Stewart scooped it up for a 43-yard score.

Up 41-10, Henderson took the team down the field on a 10-play, 80 drive that was capped off by an 11-yard strike to Jahdae Walker. With a commanding lead late in the game, Jimbo Fisher began pulling starters as the clock ran down. Randy Bond would get the lone score in the 4th quarter, nailing a 42-yard field goal and extending the lead to 51-10.

Jaylen Henderson, no doubt, was the offensive player of the game, going 11/19 for 150 and two touchdowns, then added an additional 60 yards on the ground with two scores. Edgerrin Cooper led the team in tackles with 11, and the team combined for a total of five sacks with four turnovers (3 INTS, 1FF).

The Aggies secured bowl eligibility with the victory and can look forward to finishing strong as they face the ACU Wildcats in the quest to earn their 7th win this season.

Everything Jimbo Fisher had to say after Texas A&M’s dominant 51-10 win over Mississippi State

Hear what Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher had to say after the Aggies’ dominant 51-10 win over Mississippi State to earn bowl eligibility.

Texas A&M (6-4, 4-3 SEC) has earned bowl eligibility for the first time in two seasons after putting on an absolute clinic against Mississippi State, systematically destroying the Bulldogs 51-10 behind, yes, third-string quarterback and former Fresno State Bulldog Jaylen Henderson, paired with a stifling defensive effort. Head coach Jimbo Fisher noted just how much Henderson has learned since entering the program last May.

“Jaylen is a really quick learner. We felt very comfortable. He has gotten better and better in practice. We knew he could play… Four touchdowns and no turnovers.”

Henderson, who is by far the most athletic quarterback on the roster, threw for 150 yards on 11/19 for two touchdowns while liberally using his legs, running for 60 yards and two more touchdowns on 12 carries as well. Henderson’s comfort level in the offense was quite encouraging going forward, as second-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino created a simple yet explosive game plan to utilize Henderson’s skillset, but credit to senior wide receiver Ainias Smith (4 receptions, 64 yards, 1 TD) who showed up and showed out all night long.

Defensively, star junior linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (10 tackles) led a ferocious pass rush to the tune of five sacks and seven tackles for loss. In contrast, safety Jared Kerr’s massive hit on QB Mike Wright led to an exciting scoop and score touchdown return from Aggie DT Shemar Stewart early in the 3rd Quarter.

Under head coach Jimbo Fisher, who likely added some insurance to his job security after tonight’s victory, this is the first win over Mississippi State or Ole Miss in five attempts and the largest win over the Bulldogs since 1912 (yes, that long). After every score, celebrations were had, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, this team was having fun again.

After the game, Jimbo Fisher spoke to the media to reflect on the big win as Texas A&M will take on Abilene Christian next Saturday for another early kick-off. Here is what he had to say on the night.

Texas A&M leads Mississippi State 34-10 at halftime behind a balanced offensive attack

Leading Mississippi State 34-10 at halftime, Texas A&M third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson has more than steadied the ship thus far.

Texas A&M has wowed all of us this evening, leading Mississippi State 34-10 at the half behind third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson and a stifling effort from the Aggie’s 15th-ranked defense.

While starting quarterback Max Johnson’s absence was officially announced just minutes before kick-off, all eyes were on Henderson, who, despite possessing impressive athletic traits, had yet to show consistency through the air due to a lack of collegiate playing time.

Nevertheless, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino devised a solid game plan to get Henderson (7/13, 104 yards, 1 TD, 56 rushing yards, 2 TDs) easy looks and running lanes. At the same time, wide receiver Ainias Smith has been lights out in his own right, already recording a touchdown pass on three catches for 37 yards. Also, credit goes to the Aggies’ offensive line, who have excelled in pass protection while simultaneously opening holes in the running game.

With the return of starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell and Deuce Harmon, the defense has been stellar, recording two interceptions. At the same time, standout linebacker and Bednarik award snub Edgerrin Cooper leads the Aggies in tackles with seven so far. This has been a dominant showing from an inspired group from the looks of it.
