Robert Saleh gives brutally honest answer on Jets’ second-half offense vs. Patriots

Robert Saleh was everyone was thinking about the Jets’ second-half offense.

The New York Jets scored three points in what was supposed to be their revenge tour on the New England Patriots. They barely reached 100 yards of offense. It was almost fitting that the offense stalled out late in the fourth quarter with a chance to win the game and then ultimately allowed Marcus Jones to go 84 yards on the game-winning punt return for a touchdown as the Jets lost their 14th straight game against the Patriots, 10-3.

Needless to say, the Jets’ offense was not pretty in Week 11, especially in the second half. That’s the nice way of putting it. Head coach Robert Saleh described it in a not-so-nice way.

Nothing more really needs to be said. Saleh said it pretty descriptively there. It wasn’t good. Any semblance of an offense Sunday and the Jets have no problem winning that game and would be sitting in first place in the AFC East. Instead, they’re in last place — despite having a 6-4 record — and they’re now right on the bubble with the Bengals and Chargers hot on their heels.

Zach Wilson says he doesn’t feel like he let his defense down

Zach Wilson isn’t exactly blaming himself for the Jets’ issues on offense.

This probably won’t go over too well with Jets fans. During Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson went just 9/22 for 77 yards and a quarterback rating barely over 50.

In a game where the Jets’ defense also held the Patriots to three points until that fateful game-winning punt-return touchdown, the Jets’ offense managed just three points of their own, in the first quarter.

Wilson was sacked four times and nearly made a disastrous mistake late that almost led to a game-winning pick-six instead of the punt return.

Despite all that, did Wilson feel like he let his defense down?

”No,” he told reporters after the game.

One simple word. One simple answer. But an answer that is going to cause nervous waves across the media and football landscape.

Emotions are understandably high right now for the Jets and for Wilson, but fans won’t like Wilson seemingly not holding himself accountable for his play Sunday, the second time he faltered, especially in the second half, against the Patriots.

He also said “it sucks to lose, but we have a lot of season left.” That may be true, but the Jets all of sudden find themselves in last place in the AFC East when they had a chance to take first place in the division with a win.

This now puts extra importance on next week against the Chicago Bears, as now the Jets have the Los Angeles Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals breathing down their neck for the last wild card spot.

In fact, the Jets step out of the AFC for the next two weeks. They host the Bears in Week 12 and then visit the Vikings in Week 13. The Jets could really stand to win both of those games to get to 8-4 heading into a key rematch with the Bills in Week 14.

Jets fans are understandably upset. And will Wilson’s comments help the situation one bit? No.

After defensive slugfest, Jets lose on walkoff punt return touchdown, 10-3

What a way to lose for the Jets

Yep, that happened. After the Jets’ defense did all they could to win this game and give the team first place in the AFC East, their special teams unit picked the absolute worst time to fall apart.

Marcus Jones returned a Braden Mann punt 84 yards to the house and the Jets lose their 14th straight game against the Patriots by a score of 10-3.

On a day when the defense played absolutely fantastic and made some huge stops, including another day sacking Patriots QB Mac Jones six times, the offense was nowhere to be found and it was yet another reminder that this team has plenty of talent, but are lacking at the most important position in the NFL.

Zach Wilson channeled his inner Sam Darnold and started seeing ghosts and took a few brutal sacks. He took four sacks and finished with a whopping 77 passing yards on 9/22 passing for a QB rating of 50.8.

77 yards passing. Seven yards less than Marcus Jones’ punt return. There’s your game story right there.

Or how about this? 59 rushing yards for the Jets. 26 from Wilson. No Jets’ running back hit 20 rushing yards. Michael Carter had 19, James Robinson had 10 and Ty Johnson had four.

Once again, the Jets’ third-down woes on offense came back to bite them. Just 3/14 on third down. That’s a shame because the Jets’ third-down defense was fantastic, holding the Patriots to just 4/15, including a huge stop on 3rd and 1 to give the offense a chance to win the game after the two-minute warning.

Imagine what the Jets’ defense is feeling right now. Once again they sacked Mac Jones six times. In two games, the Jets sacked Jones 12 times. Yet the Jets found a way to lose both games.

Talk about flipping the script. The Jets had a chance to move into first place in the AFC East. They now sit in last place at 6-4 and are now in danger of falling out of a wild card spot with seven games left.

Next week, it’s a home date with Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears, who fell to 3-8 after losing to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11. The Jets will be inducting Darrelle Revis into their Ring of Honor. The hope is the offense plays with a lot more fire on what will be a special day for a Jets legend.

They’ll need it because if they fall to 6-5, things start becoming more concerning, given the state of the AFC playoff picture. It’s not 100% a must-win situation for the Jets, but it might be pretty close.

Jets tied 3-3 with Patriots at halftime

Thoughts on the first half?

In what has been…a football game of sorts, the Jets and Patriots are tied, 3-3, at halftime.

The Jets have been so-so, to say the least, on offense. Zach Wilson is 5/11 for 65 yards and, while he has mostly taken care of the football (zero interceptions), he’s been fortunate at times today as well, including a throw that sailed over tight end Tyler Conklin and simply dropped by Devin McCourty.

Wilson is also leading the charge on the ground. Of the 36 rushing yards the Jets have, Wilson has 26. That’s right, the Jets’ running backs have a combined 10 yards on nine carries. Michael Carter has seven yards on four carries, James Robinson with three yards on three carries and Ty Johnson has zero yards on two carries.

In the passing game, would you believe the two leading receivers at the half are Denzel Mims and Elijah Moore? Indeed, Mims has that 34-yard catch on a nice adjustment to a short throw from Wilson and Moore has TWO catches, his first since Week 5, for 17 yards. Conklin has one catch for eight yards and Garrett Wilson has one catch for six yards.

Defensively, the Jets are doing their thing again. They have already sacked Patriots quarterback Mac Jones three times. Quinnen Williams and Carl Lawson each have a sack, while Quincy Williams and John Franklin-Myers each were given a half-sack on the first play of the game.

They have held the Patriots to 151 total net yards, but only 55 on the ground. However, Jones is 12/15 for 120 yards and a QB rating of 100. Fortunately, the Jets scored a huge third-down sack in the red zone and Nick Folk missed his first field goal ever against the Jets.

The Jets are 2/6 on third down while the Patriots are 4/9. Neither team has turned the ball over yet, though the Jets nearly had a fumble recovery early in the game that was ruled incomplete.

The Jets will start with the ball in the second half.

Guard Nate Herbig is active, as was expected after returning to practice on Friday. The two practice squad elevations this week — Tanzel Smart and Conor McDermott — are also active, as expected. Really, no surprises among this list of inactives.

For the Patriots, their inactives are as follows:

S Joshuah Bledsoe
RB J.J. Taylor
DT Sam Roberts
RB Kevin Harris
CB Shaun Wade

Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

The Jets have called up two players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Patriots. They have elevated DL Tanzel Smart and OL Conor McDermott.

Smart will make his first appearance on the active roster this season, having spent the entire season on the practice squad. With Sheldon Rankins out, Smart gives the Jets some depth at the defensive tackle position behind Quinnen Williams, Nathan Shepherd and Solomon Thomas.

McDermott has been elevated for the third consecutive game, and with this being his third elevation, the Jets have exhausted that option for McDermott moving forward. If they want to bring McDermott back up to the active roster, they will have to sign him to the 53-man roster. He has appeared in six games this season.

Brandon Marshall and Julian Edelman agree to tattoo bet on Sunday’s Jets-Patriots game

Friendly little tattoo wager between two former receivers in the Jets-Patriots rivalry.

We’ve seen players make friendly little wagers on their former teams against each other, making wearing a ridiculous outfit for the loser or something along those lines. Typically, those bets are for a short-term laugh for the loser. For former Jets WR Brandon Marshall and former Patriots WR Julian Edelman, it’s a bit more permanent.

This week on “Inside the NFL”, the two former members of the rivalry put a friendly wager on the game in which the loser will have to get a tattoo of the opposing team.

“Yeah Jules, so if the Jets win, it’s straight up, right? You have to get a Jets tattoo and vice versa. It’s just simple—simple,” said Marshall.

“Patriots, all day,” Edelman said. “Where are you going to put your tattoo?”

So as if this game couldn’t get any crazier, we now have some ink on the link on the line.

Jets vs. Patriots: Updated betting line, over/under for Week 11

Jets vs. Patriots: Updated betting line, over/under for Week 11

Week 11 for the New York Jets is more than just another game. This may be the most important of the season to date. It’s a chance to end almost seven years of futility to their rival, the New England Patriots. It’s also a chance to move into first place in the AFC East. Does Vegas think the Jets have a chance?

According to the latest odds from Tipico Sportsbook, the Jets sit as a 3-point underdog in New England. You can take the Jets +3 at a +100 moneyline (bet $100 to win $100) or the Patriots -3 at a -120 moneyline (bet $120 to win $100).

If you just want to go straight up, you can take the Jets at +150 or the Patriots at -175. And the over/under is set at 37.5. The over is -106 and the under is -114.

Good luck if you choose to bet and remember to gamble responsibly.

Final Jets-Patriots injury report: Yeboah added for Jets, Barmore out for Patriots

Final injury report against the Patriots

The Jets and Patriots have released their final injury reports for Sunday’s game and there is a late addition for the Jets and a surprise for the Patriots.

For the Jets, DT Sheldon Rankins (elbow) and WR Corey Davis (knee) are both out, which was expected. Rankins was already known at the beginning of the week and with Davis missing the first two days of practice, he was trending toward possibly missing another game. He did not practice Friday and, as a result, he will miss his third straight game.

A third Jet missed practice Friday as well. TE Kenny Yeboah was a late addition to the report. He is now dealing with a calf injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Guard Nate Herbig (shin) was able to return to practice Friday on a limited basis and is questionable for Sunday, but head coach Robert Saleh believes he will play against the Patriots. Duane Brown (shoulder) had his usual week of practice of starting limited and then working up to full on Friday.

The Patriots will not have DT Christian Barmore, which is a surprise. He was trending toward playing with two limited practices but seemed to have suffered a setback with his knee injury as he did not practice Friday and has been ruled out for Sunday.

Punter Jake Bailey (back) also did not practice Friday after two limited days. He is listed as doubtful.

LB Anfernee Jennings (back), WR DeVante Parker (knee) and LB Josh Uche (hamstring) were all limited Friday and are all questionable.

CB Jonathan Jones, S Kyle Dugger and DL DaMarcus Mitchell were taken off the injury report and are good to go for Friday.
