NFL announces Thursday Night Football flexible scheduling for 2023

Flex scheduling comes to Thursday nights

Flex scheduling in the NFL is now possible for all three major nights of the season. Sunday nights have been involved since 2006 and we already knew this season would also start bringing flex scheduling to Monday nights.

You can now add Thursday nights to that list as well. By a 24-8 vote, the owners passed a resolution to allow flexible scheduling to include Thursday games as well this season.

The key points are that this only involves Weeks 13-17, the league can only flex a maximum of two games to Thursday and there must be 28 days of advanced notice. This only applies for the 2023 season unless no games are flexed, in which case the league would roll over Thursday flex scheduling to 2024.

This can potentially affect the Jets, since their Thursday night appearance is scheduled for Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns. We will know by the end of November at the latest if that game will indeed be flexed out.

Jets to face Browns in 2023 Hall of Fame Game

Jets to face Browns in 2023 Hall of Fame Game

It was expected for a while and now it’s official. The New York Jets will help kick off the 2023 preseason when they take on the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game on August 3 in Canton, Ohio.

Having two former players, Darrelle Revis and Joe Klecko, elected as part of the Class of 2023, the Jets were almost a lock to be one of the teams selected to play. The Browns have longtime offensive tackle Joe Thomas going into the Hall this year and Cleveland is a short distance from Canton.

This will be just the third time the Jets will play in the Hall of Fame and the first since 1993 against the Philadelphia Eagles. They also played in 1977 against the Chicago Bears.

Playing in the Hall of Fame Game means the Jets will have four preseason games and start training camp a week earlier than the other teams. We’ll see how much of an advantage that gives them, especially with a new quarterback in tow.

This also means the Jets will see the Browns twice in 2023 as they are scheduled to visit Cleveland during the regular season by virtue of both teams finishing last in their respective divisions (the AFC East plays the AFC West in 2023).

Jets accomplish feat not seen in over 20 years with comeback win

The Jets’ comeback against the Brown was, undoubtedly, a rare occasion.

The Jets somehow erased a 13-point deficit in less than two minutes to shock the Browns in Cleveland, winning a wild one, 31-30, to move to 1-1 on the season. According to Next Gen Stats, the Jets had a 0.3 percent chance of winning after Nick Chubb scored and the Browns went ahead 30-17.

Needless to say, winning a game in that fashion is pretty rare in the NFL. In fact, thanks to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the last time a team won in this fashion was in 2001, when the Bears came back from down 21-7 with under a minute left against, you guessed it, the Browns.

Also per Cimini, this is just the third time the Jets have won a game after trailing by 13 in the fourth quarter, also doing so in 2011 against the Cowboys and the Monday Night Miracle against the Dolphins in 2000.

Sunday truly was an incredible feat for the Jets, who were left for dead and staring 0-2 right in the face. Now, they’re 1-1 and, all of a sudden, have two winnable games coming up against the Bengals and Steelers.

The Jets proved that you are never out of it until the clock shows triple zeros. Trailing 30-17 with 1:55 left after Nick Chubb scored his third touchdown of the day, the Jets pulled off a miraculous comeback to shock the Cleveland Browns, 31-30. Take a look back at some of the best photos from the game and take a walk down memory lane a bit.

Jets victory over Browns truly was nearly impossible

A true mission impossible for the Jets in their comeback victory.

Cue the theme from Mission: Impossible. The Jets truly did pull off the unthinkable Sunday against the Browns.

When Nick Chubb scored his third touchdown of the game to give the Browns a 30-17 lead with 1:55 left, the Jets certainly had to think there was no hope. In fact, according to Next Gen Stats, there truly was almost no hope. New York’s comeback was nearly impossible in NGS’s eyes. How nearly impossible?

0.3 percent.

Less than half a percent. That was New York’s winning probability at that stage of the game. The Jets truly pulled off a miracle on Sunday in Cleveland.

The Jets had no timeouts left and needed two touchdowns in less than two minutes. Yet somehow, someway, thanks to defensive blunders and a huge onside recovery, the Jets did just that and now sit at 1-1 with a ton of momentum heading into a Week 3 battle with a Bengals team that is already showing early signs of a Super Bowl hangover.

Tom Cruise would be proud.

Absolute insanity. Seriously, how can you describe what happened in the final two minutes between the Jets and the Browns? Such an incredible finish as the Jets score two touchdowns in the final two minutes with no timeouts left to stun the Browns, 31-30. Let’s talk about some studs and duds from this one.

Quick hits from a wild win for the Jets

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”8HGdwsOS3i-2246044-7498″]

Unbelievable. What can you say after that? What a wild game as the Jets come back from two scores down in under two minutes to shock the Browns, 31-30, to move to 1-1. Here’s some quick notes from the game.

Quick Hits

  • Holy you-know-what. What a comeback. 14 points in less than two minutes. When Nick Chubb scored to put the Browns up 30-14, the Jets were outgained in the fourth quarter 136-8. The rest, as they say, is history.
  • The Jets made it interesting after Corey Davis blew through the Browns secondary and was wide open for a 66-yard touchdown. And they recovered the onside kick! Then, of course, the game-winning score to Wilson from 15 yards out. Ashtyn Davis picked off Jacoby Brissett to seal the deal and give the Jets their first win of the season.
  • Offense looked much, much better overall. Mike LaFleur finally let his new weapon, Wilson, loose and he was able to win all over the field, on the outside, in the slot. The Jets certainly answered the call to get their first-round pick more action and it paid off and then some.
  • Another positive for the Jets was in the red zone. The Jets scored on three of their four trips to the red zone, including the game-winner.
  • Much, much better on third down. After going just 2/14 on third downs against the Ravens, the Jets were 8/15 against the Browns.
  • Tyler Conklin with his second fumble of the season already, one that almost killed the Jets’ hopes of winning the game. Fortunately, Max Mitchell was on top of it to keep the Jets alive. Boy, does that recovery look huge now.
  • Defense, for the most part, had another solid day. Held Cleveland to just 60 rushing yards at the half and only 116 yards rushing for the game. They started looking gassed in the fourth quarter and the Browns offense simply marched the field on them and the Jets had no answer.
  • But with about five minutes left, the Jets forced three straight negative plays by the Browns, including a sack by Carl Lawson on third down. In the end, Chubb became too much for the Jets and he willed the Browns to victory with three touchdowns and a key third-down conversion with about three minutes left and then putting the icing on the cake with a 12-yard touchdown. Or so we thought…
  • Redemption for Greg Zuerlein and a spot in Jets history. His 57-yard field goal was tied for the longest in franchise history. Chandler Catanzaro also had a 57-yarder in 2017. But even bigger, the game-winning extra point.

Key Stat

8/102/2: Seriously, what else could it be? That was Garrett Wilson’s stat line in what was his breakout game. After hardly seeing the field in Week 1, the Jets answered the call to use Wilson more. Looks like they’ll continue to use him. Good things happen when playmakers have the ball in their hands.

Game Balls

Garrett Wilson: See above. Enough said.

Joe Flacco: What a turnaround from last week. Flacco had time to throw and he let his weapons do the dirty work. He looked more comfortable and made the big throws when needed. A second straight 300-yard game for Flacco.

Top Takeaway

The Jets found the receipts: You talk about resiliency and answering the call. The Jets responded incredibly after their Week 1 performance. They kept the game close in the fourth quarter, which was a huge improvement from last week. But to win a game in that fashion? Maybe these aren’t the same old Jets. And one has to wonder how much better the offense can be once Zach Wilson finally returns. Regardless, this was the type of explosive offense we expected coming into the season. And that’s a great win on the road in Cleveland. Huge momentum heading into next week against the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.

First-half thoughts from Jets vs. Browns: Wilson involved, Jets tied at half with Browns

First-half thoughts from Jets-Browns

At the half, here are a few rapid-fire thoughts from the first two quarters of play as the Jets are tied with the Cleveland Browns, 14-14.

  • Great to see Garrett Wilson out on field on the very first play. Needed to get him more involved and they sure did. He is way too talented to not play. The Jets got him involved early and often and he had the Jets’ first touchdown in the second quarter. He already has seven targets.
  • Tough break for the Jets on their first drive with the incomplete pass to TE Tyler Conklin that looked like he got both feet in but the officials ruled he did not.
  • On a similar note, why is Mike LaFleur calling a Joe Flacco boot on third and one? That was very weird. He did rush for a first down on the Jets’ second drive with the first-down marker wide open.
  • The Jets defense responded by getting absolutely shredded on the first drive. The Browns went 91 yards on 14 plays in 8:37. Jacoby Brissett, David Njoku and, of course, Nick Chubb, all beating the Jets up early.
  • Very cool fake punt from Braden Mann completing the pass to Jeff Smith on the drive that led to the Garrett Wilson touchdown.
  • Not exactly sure what happened on the touchdown to Amari Cooper. There seemed to be confusion between Sauce Gardner and Lamarcus Joyner as to who was supposed to cover the flat. Perhaps Gardner thought he had help inside. Either way, Cooper was wide open for the touchdown.
  • Jets offense started to find itself as the first half wore on. A second-quarter drive looked strong and was going to result in points. That was until Jadeveon Clowney got past Max Mitchell and caused the strip-sack of Flacco, killing the drive and the momentum for the Jets.
  • Jets were able to bounce back from that turnover and drove the field again beautifully, ending with a touchdown to Breece Hall, giving another rookie his first NFL touchdown.
  • Defense has been strong overall again. Browns held to just 56 yards rushing in the first half. Chubb has just 30 rushing yards, Hunt with just 10 rushing yards,
  • Overall, the Jets look much better on offense. Getting Wilson involved more and seeing the run game continue to flourish is a major positive. Offensive line also looks better. Defense has continued playing their game. A few mistakes overall but the Jets have overcome them and that is why they are tied with the Browns.

The Jets head to Cleveland in Week 2 to take on the Browns and they sure could use a bounceback after last week’s rough outing, a 24-9 loss at home to the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s discuss some of the big stories for the Jets’ visit to FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday.

Projecting the Jets’ inactives for Week 2 vs. Browns

As we enter another game day, the Jets, along with the other 31 teams, are once again faced with the task of deciding which players will actually suit up for the game and who will be on the inactive list.

As a quick reminder, NFL teams can have up to 48 players active on game day, but to have the ability to dress 48, teams must have at least eight active offensive linemen. Otherwise, the maximum is 47.

The Jets were able to do so last week against the Ravens. Even with Conor McDermott inactive, the Jets still had three active reserves in Nate Herbig, Dan Feeney and Grant Hermanns.

Hermanns was called up to the active roster from the practice squad for the second straight week, so there’s a good chance the Jets will once again make him active and scratch McDermott.

Assuming all that, the Jets will have to name seven players as inactive. Last week was only five as they had 53 players after essentially swapping Duane Brown (placed on injured reserve) for Hermanns. This week, they’ll have 55 players.

One of those inactives players we already know is quarterback Zach Wilson. While Wilson was limited in practice all week, he was already listed as out on Friday, which we knew was going to be the case also.

One other player we can feel pretty sure about not playing is tight end C.J. Uzomah. A hamstring injury limited Uzomah on Thursday and he was held out of practice Friday and listed as doubtful. Another sign he likely won’t play is that the Jets also elevated Kenny Yeboah from the practice squad this week.

Yeboah’s call-up may also mean another healthy scratch for rookie tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Elsewhere, the Jets may make Denzel Mims inactive again and roll with five wide receivers. Defensive lineman Bryce Huff was a surprise inactive last week. Head coach Robert Saleh mentioned he wanted more run-stuffers against the Ravens and that may be the case again against the Browns.

Finally, safety Will Parks was signed to the active roster this week as insurance for Jordan Whitehead, who was thought to be week-to-week with an ankle injury. However, he worked his way back to a full practice Friday and the arrow is pointing up on him playing Sunday. If so, Parks would likely be scratched as the fifth safety. Ashtyn Davis is still a key contributor on special teams and Tony Adams is likely still ahead of Parks.

Using that, the seven players we’ll project to be inactive this week:

QB Zach Wilson
TE C.J. Uzomah
OL Conor McDermott
TE Jeremy Ruckert
WR Denzel Mims
DL Bryce Huff
S Will Parks
