Adam Gase spins a positive out of Jets’ wide web of players

Adam Gase thinks using so many players this season is actually a positive for the future.

Given all the injuries that the Jets have had this season, they’ve had to use a ton of players. Adam Gase would have rather that not been the case, but he’s managed to see the silver lining of the situation.

The Jets have used a franchise-record 71 players this season, which is the second-most in the league behind the Dolphins, who have used 74 players. Obviously, a team doesn’t want to use this many players in a season, but Gase feels like it gives the Jets a head start for next season.

“I think the fact that we’ve played a lot of guys is really great, especially for our personnel department,” Gase told reporters. “They have a really good idea of who are guys that are going to have a possibility of having a future, if there are certain guys that have eliminated themselves, what guys to re-sign.”

While the high volume of players helps the personnel department determine the roster for next season, it also signifies a lost season. If the Jets were in contention for a playoff spot, they wouldn’t want so many players playing. They’d want their top guys in there.

With this statement, Gase seems to be already looking ahead to next season. The Jets are going to have to make a lot of player personnel decisions over the next few months. They have a handful of players who need to be re-signed and players who are out of guaranteed money that they can cut.

It’ll be up to general manager Joe Douglas and his staff to make those decisions once the season is over.

Jets WR Jeff Smith done for the season

After just one appearance for the green and white, in a 42-21 loss to the Ravens, Smith’s season has come to and as well.

Jeff Smith was promoted to the Jets’ active roster last Monday, as the team was forced to send cornerback Kyron Brown to injured reserve. After just one appearance for the green and white, in a 42-21 loss to the Ravens, Smith’s season has come to and as well.

The undrafted rookie wide receiver suffered a high-ankle sprain in Thursday’s loss. The injury will sideline Smith for the rest of this season, ending his short tenure with Gang Green.

Smith finished his day with one catch for 12 yards on two targets.

New York has already had to send 16 players to its injured reserve list, so this addition may be routine by now. Still, the Jets are desperate for playmakers and stability on their 53-man roster.

Now, it will be someone else’s opportunity to step in and attempt to fill the void. At wide receiver, at least, the hope is that veteran Demaryius Thomas will be healthy in time for New York’s Week 16 matchup with Pittsburgh.

The Jets are currently 5-9 and seated third in the AFC East. With all the injuries this team has suffered, they’ll have to get creative in order to finish the season strong these final two weeks.

Jets vs. Ravens: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here everything you need to know for the Jets’ matchup with the Ravens.

The Jets will look for their biggest win of the season when they take on the Baltimore Ravens Thursday. That, of course, will be easier said than done.

New York is coming off a 22-21 win over the Dolphins and has won four of its last five games. However, the Jets are coming in really banged up after multiple players went down on Sunday against Miami.

Chuma Edoga (ankle), Ryan Griffin (ankle), Bilal Powell (ankle/illness), Brian Poole (concussion have all been ruled out. Jamal Adams (ankle), Arthur Maulet (calf), Quinnen Williams (neck) and Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are doubtful. Henry Anderson (shoulder), Kelvin Beachum (ankles), Mathias Farley (ankle), Steve McLendon (knee/hip), Ty Montgomery (foot/hip) and Nathan Shepherd (ankle) are all questionable but should be able to play.

The Jets are expected to get Le’Veon Bell back after he sat out last week with the flu. It’ll be interesting to see how Adam Gase uses him after not giving him the ball much against Cincinnati. Ty Montgomery should also see a good amount of carries with Powell already ruled out.

As for Sam Darnold, his plays needs to step up if the Jets are going to win this game. Darnold was not great last week against Miami, as he was overthrowing too many receivers. He has to be more consistent and limit the turnovers.

Defensively, the Jets have to do whatever it takes to shut down Lamar Jackson. He is the most explosive player in the league right now and the defense needs to always have a spy on him. They can’t let him get out of the pocket or they’re in deep trouble.

The Ravens are coming off a win in Buffalo last week and are riding a nine-game winning streak. Jackson is on pace to be the NFL’s MVP this season and the Ravens have a legit chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Jets only doing walk-throughs ahead of Thursday’s game vs. Ravens

The Jets will only do walk-throughs ahead of their game on Thursday night against the
Ravens.

Adam Gase is trying something a little different in order to get prepared for Thursday’s game against the Ravens.

Gase told reporters on Monday that the Jets will only do walk-throughs this week, meaning the team will not practice at all. Gase said he went winless on Thursday night while with the Dolphins when he did hold practices on short weeks.

The Jets are also really banged up after Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, as they lost another cornerback in Kyron Brown for the season. Meanwhile, Ryan Griffin, Demaryius Thomas, Bilal Powell, Chuma Edoga, Quinnen Williams, Jamal Adams, Brian Poole and Arthur Maulet all would not have practiced to start this week.

Gase’s decision gives some of those players extra time to heal. The Jets are thin at multiple positions and they can’t afford any other players to go down, especially if it occurred in practice.

It would be more ideal for the Jets to practice given that they’re going against one of the best teams in the NFL. However, allowing more guys to get healthy gives the Jets a better shot at winning rather than risking someone getting hurt.

At this point in the season, the players know Gase’s system, so it’s not like they’d be practicing anything new anyway. We’ll have to wait and see if Gase’s strategy pans out on Thursday night.

Santa becomes latest victim of Jets’ injury bug

The holiday spirit couldn’t stop Santa from escaping the Jets’ injury woes.

The Jets have been plagued with a horde of injuries this season, thinning them out at just about every position at one point or another.

The pain hasn’t stopped with the players, though. Even jolly Saint Nick seems to have been bitten by the injury bug that’s been buzzing around New York.

We know this because The Athletic’s Connor Hughes noticed an inflatable Santa Claus slumped over a trash can in the Jets’ locker room on Wednesday. After discovering a hole in the holiday decoration, Hughes couldn’t help but jokingly connect the scene to Gang Green’s injury woes.

The Jets have placed 15 players on injured reserve since August, including household names such as C.J. Mosely, Ryan Kalil, Quincy Enunwa and Avery Williamson.

The bad news doesn’t end there, either.

New York released an injury report on Dec. 4 that listed 13 players currently fighting ailments and other setbacks. That list included safety Jamal Adams, offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum and tight end Ryan Griffin.

Not that it would do them any good this season, but the Jets may want to ask for a clean bill of health this Christmas. They just shouldn’t count on the Santa in their locker room to be the one delivering the elusive gift.

Tearful Jamal Adams in walking boot after loss to Bengals

Jamal Adams has a walking boot on his left foot after the Jets’ loss to the Bengals.

If losing to the Bengals wasn’t bad enough for the Jets, they endured an injury to their best player.

Jamal Adams entered the locker room with a walking boot on his left foot after Sunday’s 22-6 loss to the Bengals. Adams said after the game that he injured it on the first series of the game but played through it. Adams was ineffective, as he only recorded one tackle for the game.

Adams, tearful while speaking to reporters, said he’s not sure what the severity of the injury is. Adam Gase didn’t mention anything after the game about Adams getting hurt.

The 23-year-old safety has been on a tear over the last few games, Sunday’s performance was one of his worst to date. On the season, Adams has 64 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks, six pass defenses and one interception.

The Jets can’t afford to be without their star safety. He is the heart and soul of this team. Meanwhile, the defense has been hit with enough injuries that they’re running out of healthy bodies.

We’ll have to wait and see what Adams’ injury is, but he’ll likely get an MRI to see what is going on with that left foot. Until then, his status for the rest of the season remains in question.

Sam Darnold credits Jets locker room for bouncing back after 1-7 start

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold gives credit to the players in the locker room for responding from a 1-7 start.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold praised the locker room for how the team has been able to bounce back from a 1-7 start to the season.

The Jets could’ve easily mailed it in for the season after the first eight games, but Adam Gase has done a good job keeping the team together and playing hard. While Darnold is giving Gase credit for that, he believes the players in the locker room are the ones continuing to put in the work and trying to win every week.

“We got such good guys in the locker room,” Darnold told reporters. “The coaches do a great job of making sure that we all stay together and they do a great job to continue to work hard and gameplan, but everyone in that locker room is set on winning.”

Under former head coach Todd Bowles, effort was sometimes a problem. It didn’t necessarily happen over a long stretch of games, but here and there you’d see the Jets clearly not care about a game. It’s good to see that this hasn’t yet been a problem under Gase, despite all the issues that he’s had with players so far in his first season.

As for the players, there’s definitely a belief among them that they can win football games consistently. But with the amount of bad luck the Jets have had with injuries, it has made it more difficult to win games.

Now that the Jets are getting some players healthy again, you’re starting to see glimpses of this team playing well. Obviously, the last two games have been against the bottom feeders of the league, but you still have to go out and execute.

If the Jets can continue to build on these wins, there should be some more confidence heading into next season.

Jets tied with Dolphins for most players used this season

The Jets are tied with the Dolphins for the most players used in the NFL this season with 68.

Due to injuries and countless roster moves, the Jets have had to scrap the bottom of the barrel for players this season.

The Jets are tied with the Dolphins for the league lead in players used this season with 68. The Jets also have $48 million worth of salary cap on injured reserve, which is more than double 26 NFL teams, according to the team’s former GM, Mike Tannenbaum. Currently, the Jets have 14 players on injured reserve.

New York has been plagued by injuries all season long. If you look at the first depth chart that came out at the beginning of the season, you’ll notice a lot of missing names on the current roster.

The positions that the Jets have been hit the worst at are cornerback, inside linebacker and offensive line. The Jets have lost their top two cornerbacks in Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts. They’ve also lost five inside linebackers for at least one game this season. On the offensive line, the Jets have used six different line combinations and four of the starting offensive linemen from Week 1 are either hurt or on the bench.

With all the injuries, the Jets have had to add a bunch of players to fulfill the 53-man roster requirement. The Jets have 16 players who weren’t on the initial 53-man roster back in September.

Even heading into Sunday’s game against the Redskins, the Jets had 23 players listed on the injury report. Say what you want about this team, but when you have this many injuries it’s not hard to see why the Jets are 3-7 on the season.

Jets G Brian Winters played through torn shoulder all season

Jets guard Brian Winters was playing with a torn shoulder throughout the season before re-disclocating it again.

[jwplayer rzKgNnfu-ThvAeFxT]

Jets guard Brian Winters was playing through more than a dislocated shoulder this season.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Winters tore the entire front part of his shoulder during the preseason. However, Winters played through it by wearing a brace that gave it some extra protection.

Winters re-dislocated his shoulder on Sunday against the Giants and is more likely out for the rest of the season. He might need surgery to repair his shoulder, but that has yet to be determined at this point.

The 28-year-old is the second-longest tenured Jet on the roster behind Bilal Powell. But injuries have derailed his career, as he’s only been able to play in three full seasons in seven years.

Sunday could have been Winters’ final game in a Jets uniform. He has one year left on his four-year contract, but his $7 million base salary is non-guaranteed. He also has a $500,000 roster bonus, so the Jets can cut him and wouldn’t be hit with any dead money.

Winters has always been a tough-nosed football player since the day he arrived in New York. But his play on the field hasn’t been what the Jets expect from him. With that and his latest injury in mind, the Jets are going to be in the market for a new left guard come March.
