Recapping Jets first unofficial depth chart ahead of Hall of Fame Game

We’re taking a look at the unofficial depth chart before Thursday’s game

The New York Jets play an actual football game Thursday, taking on the Cleveland Browns in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. This week, the Jets released their first unofficial depth chart. So ahead of Thursday’s game, let this serve as a quick reminder or refresher of that depth chart. Keep in mind, the key word here is “unofficial”. Plenty can, and will, change between now and September 11 when the Jets open the season against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Updating the Jets’ depth chart following the 2022 NFL draft

Updating the Jets’ depth chart after the 2022 NFL draft and multiple undrafted free agent signings:

The Jets’ depth chart has a new look to it with the 2022 NFL draft in the books.

New York added seven players over three days. Some, like Ahmad Gardner and Garrett Wilson, are locks to start and contribute from day one. Others will have to scratch and claw to prove their worth in pursuit of a spot on the 53-man roster.

Let’s take a look at how the depth chart stands with the draft complete and numerous undrafted free agents already signed.

New York Jets’ projected depth chart following minicamp

The Jets’ 53-man depth chart is beginning to take shape with mandatory minicamp and OTAs in the books.

There is still a long way to go before the Jets hit the road to take on the Panthers to begin the 2021 season, but the 53-man roster and depth chart New York takes to Carolina is beginning to take shape.

Robert Saleh’s first spring as Jets head coach provided plenty of insight into how his team might look come September. Between minicamp and OTAs, numerous players made their case to break camp with the team and, in some cases, established themselves as legitimate contenders to win a starting job in training camp and the preseason.

With mandatory minicamp in the books and the beginning of training camp just over a month away, here are Jets Wire’s latest 53-man roster depth chart predictions.

Jets’ first unofficial depth chart contains little surprise

The Jets have released their first unofficial depth chart, but there are not too many surprises with the season fast approaching.

The Jets have released their first unofficial depth chart, but there are not too many surprises with the season fast approaching.

Depth charts are not a set of strict rules that teams must follow, but they do give some indication as to what a player’s role or expectations might be. Here’s a quick look at the Jets’ depth charts in all three facets of the game, as well as some notes.

Offense

The most notable development here is that recent free agent signing Chris Hogan is listed as a starting receiver, while rookie Denzel Mims is a second-teamer. This is hardly a surprise, though, as Mims missed significant time during training camp due to a hamstring injury.

George Fant, as expected, is listed as the starting right tackle over sophomore Chuma Edoga. Meanwhile, we know that Joe Flacco will not be the backup quarterback to start the season as he recovers from neck surgery, Instead, David Fales or Mike White — most likely Fales — will be promoted from the practice squad as rookie James Morgan gets some seasoning on the sidelines.

Defense

The Jets’ defensive depth chart is a bit more irrelevant given the number of rotational players it has and Gregg Williams’ penchant for moving pieces around.

That said, sophomore Bless Austin is listed as a starting corner after ending last season in Williams’ doghouse. At inside linebacker, the Jets went with veterans in Avery Williamson and Neville Hewitt. Lastly, Tarrell Basham appears to be the second outside linebacker opposite Jordan Jenkins.

Special Teams

Nothing unexpected here, though it is noteworthy that Braxton Berrios is listed as the preferred option for both return jobs. Expect rookie Ashytyn Davis to make an impact there as well this season.

Updated Jets depth chart following 2020 NFL Draft

Jets Wire evaluates the Jets’ depth chart following the 2020 NFL Draft.

With the 2020 NFL Draft now in the books, the Jets’ depth chart has a new look to it.

New York added nine new players, including cornerback Quincy Wilson in a trade with the Colts, over three days. Some, like first-round selection Mekhi Becton, are a lock to either start or contribute from day one. Others will have to scratch and claw to prove their worth and make the roster.

With a number of quality players still available in free agency, Gang Green’s depth chart could change in the coming weeks. For now, let’s take a look at how things stand after the draft.

Quarterback

Syndication: Montgomery

Starter: Sam Darnold

Backups: David Fales, James Morgan, Mike White

There is a new backup in town with the selection of Florida International quarterback James Morgan in the fourth round. David Fales is currently New York’s No. 2 signal caller, but that could easily change in training camp.
