The Cincinnati Bengals dodged some bullets coming out of a Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor had a press conference Monday and confirmed reports about Joe Burrow, saying the throat injury won’t be any cause for concern this week and that he’s already back at Paul Brown Stadium. The former No. 1 pick doesn’t know when the injury occurred, per ESPN’s Ben Baby.

Taylor also revealed that star safety Jessie Bates got “rattled up” but will be fine for next week, according to The Athletic’s Jay Morrison.

Burrow went to a hospital for precautionary reasons on Sunday and was released later that night after everything checked out fine.

Bates got hurt on one of the last plays of the game, taking a bad hit over the middle.

Cincinnati also made roster moves on Monday, shipping one linebacker to injured reserve and two starters to the COVID-19/reserve list.

Bengals get injury updates on Mixon, Higgins and Bates ahead of Week 5

Important injury updates for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to get healthier ahead of their Week 5 encounter with the Green Bay Packers.

Tee Higgins and Chidobe Awuzie were both limited during Wednesday’s practice, while Jessie Bates was right back to being a full participant after missing last week’s short turnaround before the game against Jacksonville.

The following Bengals players were hit with a DNP:

  • Trey Hopkins
  • Joe Mixon
  • D’Ante Smith
  • Xavier Su’a-Filo

Hopkins has a knee issue that kept him out. Zac Taylor said before practice that they would like to see a full-go session from Mixon before giving him the go-ahead against the Packers.

Both Mixon and Higgins are critical if the Bengals hope to keep pace with Aaron Rodgers in Week 5. Bates was never a candidate to miss the game, though Awuzie is an important boundary starter as his defense gets tasked with stopping Davante Adams.

The next two days will reveal all about the status of the most important listed players.

Bengals’ final injury report rules out Jessie Bates, Tee Higgins

Two big names won’t for for the Bengals on Thursday night.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://bengalswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Cincinnati Bengals won’t have two of their biggest players on either side of the ball for Thursday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Wednesday, the Bengals announced both star safety Jessie Bates and wideout Tee Higgins will be out for the primetime game on Thursday. Corner Chidobe Awuzie gets a doubtful tag, while Trae Waynes will finally make his debut with the team.

Bates, one of the league’s best safeties, is a huge loss for the defense. He popped up unannounced on Monday’s report with a neck issue and didn’t practice all week. Higgins continues to deal with a shoulder issue that held him out of last weekend’s win over the Steelers.

Ja’Marr Chase, at least, more than made up for Higgins’ absence last week. There’s no replacing Bates, though fans will surely love to see Waynes for the first time after he missed all of last season and the first three games of this year after signing with the team in free agency.

Bengals injury updates on Jessie Bates, Tee Higgins don’t sound good for TNF

Availability of key Bengals is in doubt for Thursday night.

Monday, it didn’t see like that big of a deal when Jessie Bates, Tee Higgins and even Chidobe Awuzie popped up on the Cincinnati Bengals’ “estimated” practice report as a DNP.

After all, it was the day after a tough game in Pittsburgh. Generally, fans don’t hear about documented injury issues until Wednesday of a normal week.

This, of course, isn’t a normal week as the Bengals get ready to play on Thursday.

Tuesday changed this idea pretty dramatically. That evening, Bates, Higgins and Awuzie were again listed as DNP. Trae Waynes did return full, but as Geoff Hobson of the team’s official website pointed out, now it’s time to start worrying:

This doesn’t guarantee Bates and Higgins will miss the game against the Jaguars, but ideally, the coaches would like them to have some practice reps before getting out there.

Waynes going full is at least good news, though given how shaky he’s been since putting ink to paper with the team, it’s probably safe to expect he’ll be on a pitch count. His job will be droves harder if Bates isn’t there to play the deep middle, too.

Tomorrow is the big deal for the injury report — fans will find out then whether two of the best players on either side of the ball will be able to give it a go Thursday.

Jessie Bates’ comments on extension talks with Bengals aren’t a great sign

This doesn’t sound good for the Bengals and Bates.

[mm-video type=video id=01fcrqz97qs2e97rsb4j playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fcrqz97qs2e97rsb4j/01fcrqz97qs2e97rsb4j-02536dcd65bf7b62bd75fd3615e9cbb0.jpg]

We now have some of Jessie Bates’ side of the story when it comes to his potential extension with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Earlier, a report suggested Bates and the Bengals aren’t close on an extension and won’t reach one before the season.

Bates himself commented on the situation during an interview with Dan Hoard and Dave Lapham for the team’s official website and said the following: “I guess I haven’t done enough yet to be considered one of the top safeties in this league, which is fine.”

While he did go on to say it doesn’t change anything and he’ll keep working toward being considered one of the league’s best…it’s not the greatest sign of how things are going behind the scenes.

It’s a little surprising the Bengals even put Bates in front of this sort of mic on the team’s official platform. Comments like these are usually just public posturing during negotiations (so is the linked report above).

But if Bates feels like he’s not being valued as one of the NFL’s best at his position, there’s a chance the numbers just aren’t where he wants them to be right now. He’s not the only star safety slow to get a new deal right now — Jamal Adams in Seattle is currently holding out and wants to reset the market, too.

Report: Bengals, Jessie Bates not expected to reach contract extension

An update on the Jessie Bates extension.

An update on extension talks between the Cincinnati Bengals and star safety Jessie Bates won’t provide fans with what they want to hear.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bengals and Bates aren’t expected to reach an extension right now:

“The #Bengals and safety Jesse Bates III are not expected to reach a contract extension at this time, per source. Sides not progressing toward a deal. Bates, a 2022 free agent, is a major player coming off three interceptions, 15 pass breakups a year ago.”

It’s a bit of a shocking turn of events considering Bates has made it clear he wants to stay in town and the Bengals know what they have with one of the league’s best safeties, never mind a core locker room piece.

After the Bengals worked out an extension with Sam Hubbard, getting Bates done was the next logical step to this offseason. The summer is typically when the Bengals like to get these matters done, but that doesn’t mean an extension can’t be worked out at a later date.

One of the best safeties in the league and easily the best player on the roster, Bates would undoubtedly earn a franchise tag if push comes to shove and the two can’t work something out in the near future.

Mike Hilton calls Jessie Bates NFL’s best, explains why he chose Bengals

A new Bengals leader has some interesting thoughts about his teammates and team.

[mm-video type=video id=01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq-165c918732918ecdd2b07545b4385657.jpg]

New Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton has already emerged as major leader in the locker room.

As we’ve noted, Hilton has spurred a culture change by bringing over a fines and accountability system for the secondary, something he learned during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Early this week, Hilton also talked about his time in Pittsburgh with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com and threw out something really notable — he thinks Jessie Bates is the best safety in the league, even better than Pittsburgh’s Minkah Fitzpatrick.

He also explained why he chose the Bengals:

“Just seeing the guys they had over here. It started with Joe (Burrow). When you have a guy that you can build around for the next 10 plus years, that’s definitely an exciting feeling. And you know, just seeing the growth of this team over these last four years that I’ve played them. They might not get the respect that we deserve around, but we feel like we’re coming to that turning point where guys are definitely going to respect us as a team.”

The last week or so has been a fun get-to-know session with Hilton for Bengals fans after being told for months that he was a great, underrated signing by the team.

With the defense dominating the offense right now, plus all of the above, it’s pretty clear those predictions ring true already.

With Sam Hubbard deal done, Jessie Bates’ extension is next for Bengals

One down, one to go for the Bengals this summer.

[mm-video type=video id=01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq-165c918732918ecdd2b07545b4385657.jpg]

It always felt like Sam Hubbard’s extension with the Cincinnati Bengals was going to get done well before the team got around to extending star safety Jessie Bates.

One reason — simplicity. Now it’s Bates’ turn.

Everything was easy about getting Hubbard’s deal done. He’s a quality rotational piece, not a top-of-league player at his position. Give him four more years worth $40 million and call it a day.

Now the fun begins.

Bates is one of the league’s most criminally underrated players. He knows it. His reps know it. And so do the Bengals.

That complicates things at a position where Landon Collins nearly leads the NFL with an average annual value of $14 million — an overpay by a bad Washington team. Denver’s Justin Simmons tops the league at a $15.25 million AAV and Seattle’s Jamal Adams currently aims to reset the top of the market with an extension of his own.

Not that the Bengals have had problems retaining their own by paying top dollar. Complicated doesn’t have to mean something doesn’t get done. If one had to play the odds on Bates getting an extension, it’s somewhere in the 80th percentile.

It’s just worth pointing out that Hubbard’s getting done first isn’t any sort of concern. Just like Hubbard, the Bengals know what they have with Bates.

And for his part, Bates wants to stay in town and hasn’t sounded too concerned about it. As the last remaining big-ticket item on the docket for the Bengals this summer, the Bates extension feels like a matter of when, not if.

Bengals star safety Jessie Bates picks up another big snub

The NFL continues to sleep on Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates.

[mm-video type=video id=01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq-165c918732918ecdd2b07545b4385657.jpg]

It appears the larger NFL world will continue to sleep on Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates.

Bates, one of the league’s better players at his position, just missed the cut over at Pro Football Focus’ “50 best players in the NFL right now” from Sam Monson.

Normally, Bates missing a top 50 overall list wouldn’t be too shocking, depending on how said list values different positions. But this list names four other safeties above Bates: Denver’s Justin Simmons, Minnesota’s Harrison Smith, Cleveland’s John Johnson and New Orleans’ Marcus Williams.

That’s a little strange considering PFF had already named Bates one of the league’s best players at his spot — and he was the highest-graded safety in the league last year.

Not that Bates will pay much attention to a snub like this. He’s focused on an extension with the Bengals and — more importantly — trying to be the leader the Cincinnati locker room needs.

Jessie Bates comments on possible extension with Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates isn’t worried about his contract status.

[mm-video type=video id=01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq-165c918732918ecdd2b07545b4385657.jpg]

One of the biggest priorities for the Cincinnati Bengals this summer would likely be an extension for star safety Jessie Bates.

Ask Bates, though, he’s just focused on the on-field aspect while letting his new agent handle the money talks.

Here’s what he told the media after Tuesday’s OTAs, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“I think a lot of guys focus too much on it, but I feel very comfortable with the change that I made. Obviously, I feel like I’m a core piece in Cincinnati. My family is three hours away, so I would love to be here. My main goal is to take that next level that I keep saying as a leader on this team. The money part of it will come. I just want to win. That’s all I care about is winning. The money part of it will come. Not just for me, but for everybody in this program.”

That would seem to make it all pretty clear: Bates wants to stick in Cincinnati for the long-term.

And the Bengals would be wise to make Bates one of the league’s highest-paid safeties — considering he’s already one of the best at his position.

Thanks to some smooth cap handling despite big spending, there isn’t much of a cap hurdle for the Bengals to leap in order to get this done, either. At his current pacing, Bates is a foundational sort of player for a unit and leader of the locker room the team should want to lock down without any hiccups.
