Miranda Maverick lost desire to fight Tracy Cortez, wants Jessica Andrade after UFC Tampa

Third time could be the charm to finally meet Tracy Cortez in the cage, but Miranda Maverick isn’t interested in finding out after UFC Tampa.

TAMPA, Fla. – [autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag] left UFC on ESPN 63 victorious but disappointed.

Despite her win over Jamey-Lyn Horth on the prelims at Amalie Arena, Maverick (15-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was supremely critical of the performance that earned her a unanimous decision victory.

“Worst victory I’ve ever gotten. Worst performance I’ve ever done as far as still pulling out the win,” Maverick told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “I just didn’t really pull out what I’ve got in there. I’m very disappointed in my performance. I’m better than what I was. But at the end of the day, a win is a win. I get paid for the win the way that I need to. Hopefully, I’ll renegotiate and get higher up the ladder.”

Horth (7-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) was a short notice replacement for injured [autotag]Tracy Cortez[/autotag], whom Maverick has been matched up with twice but has yet to fight. Initially, Maverick vs. Cortez (11-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was expected to take place in July. Cortez was moved from that bout to a main event vs. Rose Namajunas. After Cortez lost, she was rebooked vs. Maverick. However, she withdrew due to an injury that required surgery.

Given the history of cancellations, Maverick has lost her taste for a potential rebooking. She’d much rather fight former UFC champion [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] instead.

“I was supposed to have a ranked opponent this time,” Maverick said. “I still want a ranked opponent next. I’d love to fight Jessica Andrade in April. She’s inspired me a lot through this journey. Nobody in the top 15 or top 10 wanted to fight me when Tracy dropped out. They had five weeks’ notice and wanted to call it short notice. So I want to keep moving up. … It’s two times (Cortez) has had to fight me now. We gave it an 80 percent chance she was going to drop out this time. What happened was she dropped out and then magically four days later she says she’s ready to fight again. Weird.”

[lawrence-related id=2793190,2793275]

The potential matchup vs. Andrade (26-13 MMA, 17-11 UFC) interests Maverick for multiple reasons. It’s an opportunity to fight up the rankings, yes – but also Maverick thinks it would be a great style fight for the fans given their perceived similarities.

“We’re both kind of built the same as muscular, stocky girls in the division,” Maverick said. “I’ve been watching her fight since I started in the UFC. I was a kid watching Jessica Andrade on TV fighting. 15-10, no girls wanted to fight. I could call out specific names. Obviously, there’s Tracy. Casey O’Neill is not taking a fight for three times now. Even a short notice against her, she didn’t want to take against me. (There were) at least two other girls in that 15-10 lineup. Skip them. Let’s go onto Andrade. We’ll put on a hell of performance and be a fan favorite.”

UFC Fight Night 242 results: Natalia Silva beats Jessica Andrade in entertaining, strike-heavy bout

A new UFC contender has emerged and she has title fights on her mind.

If [autotag]Natalia Silva[/autotag] wasn’t a contender prior to Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 242, she is now.

In what was her most high-profile test to date, Silva (17-5-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) defeated [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] (26-12 MMA, 17-10 UFC) by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). The flyweight bout was the co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

For the majority of the 15-minute duration, the bout between Silva and Andrade was action-packed. Andrade was predominantly the one moving forward, but Silva found success on the backpedal. Her counters and spinning kicks were effective. In Round 2, she stunned Andrade with a big punch to the left side of her head. Andrade also had her moments, but they were fewer and farther between.

When the dust settled, Silva emerged the victor, as she swept all three rounds from all three judges on the scorecards.

“Dana, I came here to be a champion,” Silva said in the cage after her win. “I want that shot.”

With the win, Silva extends her winning streak to 12 and maintains a perfect UFC record. Her other UFC victories are against Viviane Araujo, Andrea Lee, Victoria Leonardo, Tereza Bleda, and Jasmine Jasudavicius.

In defeat, Andrade has a two-fight winning streak snapped. A former UFC strawweight champion, Andrade has lost five of her most recent seven bouts.

UFC Fight Night 242: Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 242 odds between Jessica Andrade and Natalia Silva, with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 3-round women’s flyweight bout on the main card, Jessica Andrade and Natalia Silva meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 242 — also known as UFC on ESPN+ 100 and UFC Vegas 97 — at UFC Apex. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC Fight Night 242: Andrade vs. Silva odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+ with the main card starting at 7 p.m. ET.

Records: Andrade (26-12-0) | Silva (17-5-1)

The veteran Andrade snapped a 3-bout losing skid with a 2nd-round KO/TKO of Mackenzie Dern at UFC 295 in Nov. 2023. She followed that up with a split-decision win over Marina Rodriguez at UFC 300 in April, and she appears to be back on track.

Andrade is now 5 years removed from her title victory over Rose Namajunas at UFC 237 May 11, 2019, but “Bate Estaca” is still just 32 years old and very dangerous in the octagon.

Silva is a 27-year-old southpaw who has won all 5 fights since making her UFC debut with a unanimous-decision victory over Jasmine Jasudavicius June 18, 2022. She has 3 UD wins and 2 KO/TKO victories since making her company debut.

Silva has a 3-inch reach advantage over the veteran, and she stands 3 inches taller, too. Andrade is still a punching machine, though, holding a 6.62-to-4.53 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, and she is much more accurate with 56.66% of those strikes landed, to just 49.78% for the favorite.

UFC Fight Night 242: Andrade vs. Silva picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

It’s a strange position to see Andrade (+250), but she is a giant underdog to Silva (-310). This is a difficult fight to handicap, as the veteran still has plenty left in the tank and has had a resurgence of late. However, Silva is a heavy favorite who just has done everything right since joining the company.

PASS, and look to the distance instead. If you absolutely have to have action on this fight, the value is on the aging, but still very dangerous underdog Andrade.

Over/Under (O/U)

YES (-148): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is not priced out of line.

Andrade went the distance last time out against Rodriguez. While that was a bit of a rarity for her, Silva has gone the distance in the past 2 bouts and 3 of her 5 fights since joining the UFC.

Playing Over 2.5 Rounds (-196) doesn’t make as much sense, as you need to risk nearly 2 times your potential return for just a little bit of wiggle room in the event of a late Round 3 finish.

Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC Fight Night 242

Will Natalia Silva break through into title contention by getting past Jessica Andrade at UFC Fight Night 242?

[autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] and [autotag]Natalia Silva[/autotag] meet Saturday in the co-main event card of UFC Fight Night 242 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 6-0
UFC main cards, 2024: 76-61-3

Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva UFC Fight Night 242 preview

Former strawweight champion Andrade (26-12 MMA,17-10 UFC) is back at 125 pounds. She will be looking to extend her current winning streak to three, following consecutive wins over Mackenzie Dern and Marina Rodriguez, which came at 115 pounds. Andrade’s last flyweight bout was a second-round submission loss to Erin Blanchfield last February, and since then, she has gone 2-2 as a strawweight. … Silva (17-5-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has turned a lot of heads since her UFC debut in June 2022. She has competed in five fights in the promotion and won them all, including stoppages of Tereza Bleda and Victoria Leonardo. He last appearance was a unanimous decision win over Viviane Araujo in February.

Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva UFC Fight Night 242 expert pick, prediction

The co-main event in Las Vegas features a top 10 attraction at women’s flyweight between Andrade and Silva.

Despite recently winning a fight down a division, Andrade finds herself, once again, campaigning at 125 pounds.

Standing in the perennial contender’s way is Silva, who is clearly
“the new hotness” in town, given her five-fight undefeated streak inside the octagon.

In fairness, the hype on Silva is largely justified, given her athletic ceiling and the clear improvements she’s made since stepping onto the UFC scene. Flashy repertoire aside, Silva demonstrates some sneaky counter-punching ability to go along with solid takedown defense fundamentals when working along the fence.

That said, Silva tends to play it a little too fast and loose on the back foot, which can be extra dangerous inside of the smaller octagon against a fighter whose preferred kill zone exists in the very same space as Andrade’s does.

Although I could easily see Andrade slipping into a head kick or dipping headfirst into a spinning sidekick from Silva, I believe that the smaller cage of the Apex will favor the former champion from both a striking and grappling perspective.

I’ll pick Andrade to win by club-and-sub in Round 2.

Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva UFC Fight Night 242 odds

Despite the oddsmakers opening this bout closer to pick’em odds, public money has widened the gap in favor of the younger fighter, listing Silva (-320) and Andrade (+245) via FanDuel.

Jessica Andrade vs. Natalia Silva UFC Fight Night 242 start time, how to watch

As the co-main event, Andrade and Silva are expected to walk out to the cage at approximately 8:35 p.m. ET (5:35 p.m. PT). The fight will air on ESPN+.

UFC Fight Night 242’s Jessica Andrade claims she cut 60 pounds in 32 days for 2017 win over Claudia Gadelha

Jessica Andrade, who holds multiple all-time octagon records entering UFC Fight Night 242, opens up about her craziest weight cut.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] won’t rule out more future moves down to the strawweight division, but said she’s currently experiencing the best weight cut of her career for her women’s flyweight bout against Natalia Silva at UFC Fight Night 242.

Andrade (26-12 MMA, 17-10 UFC) is the only female in UFC history to earn victories in three weight classes. She started as a bantamweight, then went down to strawweight where she had her biggest success in becoming a UFC champion. In recent years, she has spent most of her time at flyweight, but has made some appearances down at 115 pounds.

The matchup with Silva (17-5-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) is in the weight class where she feels most comfortable, Andrade said, despite starting her came 30 pounds heavier than where she will weigh in on Friday ahead of Saturday’s contest at the UFC Apex (ESPN+).

“(I had) 30 pounds (to cut when) I heard about the fight in June in Brazil,” Andrade told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at Wednesday’s media day. “Only started to do the weight cut here when I got back at the end of June (then) July and August. … This has been one of my best weight cuts. I’m feeling great as far as training is concerned. I’m feeling strong, feeling great and I’m training around people that are waking me up.”

Although 30 pounds seems significant, Andrade said she only has five pounds remaining to shed. Those will likely be the most difficult pounds, but it’s nothing compared to what the Brazilian has endured in the past. According to Andrade, her biggest weight cut came prior to her unanimous decision victory over Claudia Gadelha in September 2017.

“Yeah, a lot of weight losses in the past for the cuts,” Andrade said. “For the fight against Gadelha, I actually dropped 60 (pounds) in 32 days.”

Andrade, 32, has been through a lot in her UFC career, and enters UFC Fight Night 242 against Silva with the most fights and victories of any female in company history. She will look to add on to those accolades in pursuit of a title shot in any division, or for a BMF belt, and thinks Silva is a good dance partner to get her there.

“I think this is great matchmaking,” Andrade said. “It’s two good styles of fighting. When the name came up we thought about a main event in August. It turns out it gave enough time for both of us. I think both of us have to do a hard weight cut. I think it’s a girl I see what she’s all about. I’ve seen her since she’s come to the UFC. I’ve followed her. I’ve cheered her on ever since she’s come here. So I think it’s going to be a good fight since she’s come here.”

UFC on ESPN 62’s Angela Hill aims to break record for most female fights in company history

Angela Hill is edging closer to Jessica Andrade’s record for most female fights in UFC history.

[autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] is edging closer to [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag]’s record for most female fights in UFC history.

Hill (17-13 MMA, 12-13 UFC) enters her 26th octagon bout when she meets Tabatha Ricci (10-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 62 (ESPN/ESPN+) co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

When Hill makes the walk against Ricci, she will trail Andrade’s (26-12 MMA, 17-10 UFC) record by only one fight.

“Andrade is cheating,” Hill said, jokingly, in an interview with MMA Junkie. “She’s fighting in both weight classes. I’m like, ‘Yo, pick one so I could beat you when it comes to the most fights.’ I’m excited about trying to break that record. It’s one of those things where I don’t take a lot of damage when I fight. Just recently, I’ve started to actually take a tiny bit of damage, so I’ve been trying to work on my defense and make sure that I’m still getting in there and coming out healthy – with healthy brain, healthy body and everything.

“I feel like having more of an emphasis on grappling has prolonged my career. It’s definitely added some years to it. People can say, ‘Why is she still fighting?’ but I still feel young, I still feel fresh, I still do well against the girls that are coming in, and I feel like I have a wealth of knowledge that I can use to my advantage as well.”

Hill is coming off just her second UFC finish – a Performance of the Night submission of Luana Pinheiro in May. Having won four of her past five, Hill was hoping for a higher ranked opponent, but is happy to draw Ricci.

“This is a matchup that I liked,” Hill said. “I wanted someone higher, but unfortunately most of the people higher I already fought. It’s nice to get some fresh blood, some fresh meat. I feel really good. I feel really strong.

“I feel like I’m more dangerous. I feel like there’s a lot of tools that I can use against her. She’s a cool chick. I have no animosity toward her, either. I always feel like I fight better when I like the person I’m fighting, so I’m excited about it.”

Jessica Andrade: Title shot after UFC 300 win is the ‘natural course of things’

Jessica Andrade campaigned for a title shot after UFC 300.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] campaigned for a title shot after UFC 300.

Former champion Andrade (26-12 MMA, 17-10 UFC) notched her second-straight win Saturday when she defeated Marina Rodriguez (17-4-2 MMA, 7-4-2 UFC) by split decision in their strawweight bout at T-Mobile Arena.

Based off of availability and who already had their chance at the title, Andrade explains why she should be next for champion Zhang Weili, who retained her title against Yan Xiaonan in the night’s co-headliner.

“This is the natural course of things,” Andrade told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at the UFC 300 post-fight press conference. “That’s what Marina said. I think the winner of this fight was the one who should be next for the fight for the title.

“If you think about it, Tatiana (Suarez) is actually injured. Amanda Lemos, not only myself, but also Marina faced her. So I hope to have a shot at the title, and having that shot (at) the end of the year.”

A fresh matchup could be Virna Jandiroba, who’s on a three-fight winning streak, and also close to title contention. However, Andrade would rather not fight her.

“Virna and I are really, really, really good friends,” Andrade said. “I saw her at the (UFC Performance Institute) this week. We were talking about this. Most likely, she’s probably going to face Amanda Lemos next, and I would be fighting for a belt before her.

“Tatiana is injured, so she would face Amanda. I would go with (Weili). We’ve talked, Virna and I, about this, and said if we’re going to face each other, might as well be for a belt.”
