Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy has an uncertain future in Denver

The Broncos need more draft picks and salary cap space, so could the team trade WR Jerry Jeudy this spring?

The Denver Broncos have limited draft picks and negative salary cap space going into the 2024 offseason.

So, ahead of NFL free agency, it would not be surprising to see the Broncos acquire more draft capital and free up cap space through trades. One of the most notable trade candidates to keep an eye on this spring is wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

Denver has discussed the possibility of trading Jeudy with multiple teams over the last two years and the receiver is set to have a $12.987 million salary cap hit in 2024 when his fifth-year option kicks in.

As for Jeudy, he’s not worrying about his uncertain future with the team.

“I don’t care about any of that,” Jeudy told KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis on Sunday. “I know me, I’m a baller. And I’m going to keep on with whatever happens.”

Jeudy gave a more colorful answer when asked again about his future when players were made available to media in the locker room on Monday.

“I don’t give a [expletive] about none of that,” Jeudy said, according to The Denver Post‘s Parker Gabriel.

Jeudy, 24, has totaled 211 receptions for 3,053 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons (57 games) with the Broncos. The former first-round pick out of Alabama has not quite lived up to expectations in Denver, and a change of scenery could prove to be beneficial for all parties.

15 takeaways from the Broncos’ first season under Sean Payton

Here are 15 quick takeaways from Sean Payton’s first season with the Broncos.

After starting 4-11 last season, the Denver Broncos fired first-time head coach Nathaniel Hackett with two games remaining. Jerry Rosburg then took over on an interim basis and the club split their final two games to finish the year with a 5-12 record.

After firing Hackett, the Broncos’ new ownership group wanted to go big, so they agreed to trade first- and second-round draft picks to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a third-round pick and the rights to head coach Sean Payton last January.

While Denver did not qualify for the playoffs, the team did take a step forward in Year 1 under Payton, improving from 5-12 in 2022 to 8-9 in 2023. That marked the team’s best record since 2017. The next step is posting a winning record and qualifying for the postseason in 2024.

So, what did we learn from Payton’s first season in Denver? Here are 15 quick takeaways from the Broncos’ 2023 season.

Studs and duds from Denver Broncos’ 2023 season

The Denver Broncos had an wild season, full of ups and downs. We take a look back at the best and worst from 2023.

The Denver Broncos closed their 2023 season with a disappointing 27-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, finishing their season at 8-9.

This season began with buzz over head coach Sean Payton coming to Denver and his partnership with Russell Wilson. At the beginning of the season, there were far more problems than solutions. But then, in the middle of the year, the Broncos went on a remarkable six-game win streak, and there were serious playoff conversations happening for the first time since 2015. A couple of late-season losses ended those talks, but Denver still finished the year with their most wins since 2016.

We take a look at this season full of ups and downs with our final list of studs and duds from 2023.

10 players who might play their last game for Broncos on Sunday

The Broncos will need to get out of a salary cap hole in 2024, and these players might become cap casualties.

The Denver Broncos will wrap up their 2023 NFL season on Sunday when they face the Las Vegas Raiders on the road in Week 18.

Once the final whistle blows, the offseason will begin immediately for the Broncos, and coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton are poised to have a busy spring with many challenging decisions.

Sean Payton comments on Russell Wilson not seeing Jerry Jeudy wide open

“If you watch all of [the film], holy cow, there are about two or three of those plays,” Sean Payton said of Jerry Jeudy being wide open.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy has had a quiet season, but the blame for that does not fall squarely on him.

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has missed Jeudy being wide open multiple times this season, including several instances against the Houston Texans in Week 13.

Jeudy was wide open at least three times on Sunday and Wilson looked elsewhere — first on a 4th down (that Wilson picked up on the ground), second when Wilson threw an interception on a pass intended for Courtland Sutton, and third on 2nd-and-goal toward the end of the game.

Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about Wilson not seeing a wide-open Jeudy during his conference call with reporters on Monday.

“I think it’s a fair question,” Payton said. “Jerry went through a stretch. I don’t want to call it a dry spell, but certainly frustration. Even when we won, he wanted to be a part of it. We want to get his hands on the ball.

“That was a play, though, where they dropped coverage, and he very easily was a viable target for a big play. Finally, he was able to make a few in that game. Really, if you look at the tape closely and you watch all of it — I know some of you get to do that. If you watch all of it, holy cow, there are about two or three of those plays.”

That comment from Payton caused some to wonder if the coach was throwing his quarterback under the bus.

Fans and pundits (and former players) chimed in on social media on Sunday when Jeudy was being overlooked.
