Defying the odds: The 10 biggest MMA betting upsets of 2022

Check out the top 10 MMA betting upsets of 2022, according to the oddsmakers, across Bellator, the UFC, PFL and more.

Who doesn’t love a good upset?

In 2022, MMA saw its fair share of underdogs who defied the odds in the UFC, Bellator and beyond. While everyone has an opinion of who should win and who should lose, the oddsmakers (and how the betting public responds) largely get the final say on what history reflects.

This year, with the help of MMA database Tapology, MMA Junkie has compiled the top 10 betting upsets of 2022. Fights that were eligible were those that multiple major online sportsbooks recognized, and that Tapology recorded prior to the close of the betting line.

Promotions eligible include UFC, Bellator, PFL, KSW, DWCS, Road to UFC, Eagle FC, and One Championship.

Check out the top 10 MMA betting upsets of 2022 below. Only major MMA promotions were included in the tally.

Jeremy Kennedy recalls fighting Aaron Pico amid shoulder injury at Bellator 286

Jeremy Kennedy’s win over Aaron Pico came in an unexpected manner.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – [autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag]’s most recent win in the Bellator cage came in an unexpected manner.

The bantamweight contender took on standout Aaron Pico on the main card at Bellator 286 on Saturday. Kennedy (18-3 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) got his hand raised, but it was a shoulder injury by Pico that ultimately gave Kennedy the TKO win.

It was a bizarre scene. Pico continually triedd to pop his shoulder back into place mid-fight, and even at the end of Round 1, when he was in his corner getting ready for the second, he was trying to pop his shoulder back in with the help of his coach. Pico couldn’t recover, though, and the doctor officiating the bout didn’t allow him to continue fighting.

Kennedy witnessed everything first hand.

“I was just focused on that first round getting that finish, and I can kind of tell that the mat returns were getting easier and easier, and he was giving less resistance,” Kennedy said at the Bellator 286 post-fight press conference. “I thought maybe something was up, but I didn’t know. He didn’t say anything, and he’s still fighting.

“But that’s my position. I get the back and I try to be really sticky with it. So I didn’t really give him much of an option to fight out. I had the body lock and I knew I was going to be there for the round unless I got the choke.

“In between rounds, I wasn’t really focusing on him. My coach grabbed me, and he’s like, ‘Hey, listen. This is what we have to do.’ And then I kind of looked over his shoulder and I saw him reefing on his arm, and I was like, ‘Oh damn. This isn’t going to go.’

“It looked like they got it sorted out, and I thought maybe that’s a problem they’ve had in the past, and it’s just a simple pop in, and he’s good to go again. I was ready to go guns blazing at him. … I was expecting a fight when I stoop off the stool. I was expecting a second round because I thought they had fixed it or figured it out. Unfortunate, honestly. You can’t control anything, especially with shoulders.”

Regardless of the nature of the result, it’s still an official win for Kennedy, who’s now on a two-fight winning streak.

Kennedy hopes to return early next year to the Bellator cage, and he wants former title challenger Pedro Carvalho next.

“The only thing announced outside the rest of the year, it’s that February card. I’ve had a lot of history with Pedro (Carvalho), so that’s the one I’m gunning for. I just talked to (matchmaker) Mike (Kogan). He loved the idea. Pedro is probably sitting there shuttering in Ireland, wishing he didn’t send out those tweets. But it is what it is. Now he has to back that up.”

Bellator 286 salaries: Patricio Freire, Jeremy Kennedy lead all disclosed paydays

Bellator 286 is in the books. Patricio Freire, Jeremy Kennedy, and four others made six-figures in disclosed pay. Check out the full list.

Twenty-six fighters competed Saturday at Bellator 286, but no one walked away with a higher disclosed purse than champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag].

California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) executive director Andy Foster released a full list of fighter payouts Saturday to MMA Junkie.

One of six fighters who pocketed six-figure disclosed paydays, Freire topped the list with $150,000 for his win over [autotag]Adam Borics[/autotag]. Former UFC fighter [autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag] made the second most, as he took home $110,000 for his win over Aaron Pico.

Former Bellator featherweight champion [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag], headlining title challenger [autotag]Adam Borics[/autotag], rising star [autotag]Aaron Pico[/autotag], and former Bellator bantamweight champion [autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] also took home six figures.

Bellator 286 results: Aaron Pico appears to dislocate shoulder as Jeremy Kennedy wins by injury TKO

Aaron Pico wanted to continue, but the cageside doctor wouldn’t let him.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – [autotag]Aaron Pico[/autotag] wanted to continue, but the cageside doctor wouldn’t let him.

Pico’s shoulder appeared to dislocate his shoulder during his fight [autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag] on Saturday night at Bellator 286. And just like that, after five minutes, the fight was over, with Kennedy awarded a first-round doctor-stoppage TKO at Long Beach Arena.

After the bell rang, Pico did what he could to fight on. First, his team immediately began working on his left shoulder, trying to pop it back into place. For a moment, it looked like they succeeded as the referee asked Pico to get into his fighter stance. But then the cageside doctor was called in to examine, and Pico tried to show he had proper motion in his shoulder. After a couple minutes of trying to convince them he could continue, the referee waved it off on the advice of the doctor.

Afterward, Kennedy (18-3 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) wanted to make it clear that he was better than Pico (10-4 MMA, 10-4 BMMA) during their time in the cage.

“No, I hit him with a left hook on his way in, and we got into grappling exchanges,” Kennedy said. “I know his wrestling pedigree. From a lot of those mat returns, they were kind of feeling easier and easier as the round came on. I respect Pico. I knew maybe something is going on. But I was just going for the kill the whole time, hunting that choke. That’s my position. I get your back. When you’re trying to get up on the cage, I’m going to mat return you and maul you.”

It was an unfortunate end to Pico’s Southern California homecoming fight as the result snapped a six-fight winning streak. Kennedy now has won two fights in a row.

Bellator has touched down in Southern California this week, and the featherweight title is on the line at the top of the card.

Bellator 286 takes place Saturday at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, featherweight champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] (33-5 MMA, 21-5 BMMA), arguably the greatest fighter in Bellator history, takes on challenger [autotag]Adam Borics[/autotag] (18-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA). Freire is just a slight -150 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Borics is +115. But our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have “Pitbull” Freire as a unanimous pick at 11-0.

The co-main event features former featherweight champ [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] (18-1 MMA, 18-1 BMMA) – Freire’s biggest rival – in a move up to lightweight for the first time in front of his home fans in Long Beach. He’ll take on [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] (14-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) as a big 5-1 betting favorite. Not surprisingly, McKee is our second unanimous pick.

[autotag]Aaron Pico[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 10-3 BMMA) is the biggest favorite on the main card in his featherweight bout against [autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag] (17-3 MMA, 2-1 BMMA). Pico is a -650 favorite at the betting window, but one of our 11 pickers is taking Kennedy to pull off a big upset. Pico still has a blowout in the picks at 10-1, though.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] (25-4 MMA, 7-3 BMMA) meets [autotag]Enrique Barzola[/autotag] (19-6-2 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) in a bantamweight bout between a pair of fighters looking to rebound after getting knocked out of the ongoing 135-pound grand prix. Barzola is a slight favorite at -140, but Archuleta has a big 8-3 lead in the picks from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Freire (60 percent), McKee (84 percent), Pico (81 percent) and Archuleta (63 percent) are the choices.

Jeremy Kennedy: Aaron Pico leaves a lot of openings, and I really plan on exploiting his aggression at Bellator 286

“He’s a really good forward fighter. But with that, it leaves a lot of openings, and I really plan on exploiting his aggression.”

[autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag] will meet fire with fire when he faces Aaron Pico – and he knows it.

Kennedy (17-3-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) takes on Pico at Bellator 286 on Oct. 1 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif.

Although Pico (10-3 MMA, 10-3 BMMA) is a highly-touted prospect, Kennedy has a wealth of experience with fights against the likes of current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Meanwhile, Pico has been on a roll having finished five of his past six opponents, but Kennedy won’t be afraid to meet him in the middle.

“He’s game everywhere,” Kennedy recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “He’s solid on the feet with his boxing and his wrestling is world class, but I think my experience – I’ve had a lot of fights. I’ve been around. I’ve fought all over the world, fought in all the organizations, tough guys, and I think he’s gonna have his hands full everywhere. It’s not like he’s gonna go out there and have this huge wrestling or striking advantage I don’t feel, but that’s up to me to prove and show. And I think really getting grimy and meeting him head on.

“He’s a very, very, very good forward pressure fighter, so I just gotta make sure to meet that and don’t take a back step and let him dictate the whole pace  and do his thing which he’s been able to do to all these other guys that are kind of already beaten before getting in there. They’re very timid, they’re fighting him timid, and I can’t do that. I gotta go out on my shield and kill or be killed. I have to go forward and meet him head on in the center and we’ll sort it out there.”

He continued, “I just see a bull, man. He just comes forward, he’s very aggressive, and he’s a really good forward fighter. But with that, it leaves a lot of openings, and I really plan on exploiting his aggression. Whether it be takedowns, counters, punches in the middle, in the clinch, elbows, knees. My game plan is just to be violent everywhere.”

[lawrence-related id=2582833,2583250]

Kennedy is coming off a unanimous decision win over former title challenger Emmanuel Sanchez. He’ll get an opportunity to put a halt to Pico’s hype, but Kennedy sees himself as a big step up in competition for the 25-year-old.

“I do think it’s a great test for both of us,” Kennedy said. “I think that’s why it’s such an intriguing matchup. Since I’ve got into Bellator, I’ve been fighting all the Bellator staples: Sanchez, Borics, now Pico. So I’m really testing myself right away, right into the deep water and I’ve established myself as a top 10 featherweight in the Bellator division.

“I think he had a little bit of stumbles when he fought tough competition early on and now he’s done what he’s done, he’s on a great six-fight win streak, doing what he’s supposed to be doing to these guys. Putting them away, looking good doing it and I think this is his next step again. Now it’s his second time around on these top guys again.”
