Crawshaw, Thornton named SEC Players of the Week after win over Ole Miss

For a second straight week, the SEC has named Florida Gators as the Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week.

Florida’s Week 13 upset against Ole Miss featured many heroes in Orange and Blue, but the SEC gave some special recognition to punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Bryce Thornton[/autotag].

Crawshaw earned conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors and Thronton got the nod as a Defensive Player of the Week for their play.

Thornton came up big in the fourth quarter, reeling in two interceptions to end both of Ole Miss’ final two drives of the game. He also finished the contest with a career-high 14 tackles and led the Gators’ defense, which allowed just 17 points from the Rebels — tied for their lowest total of the season.

Crawshaw, a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, recorded 327 punt yards, including a 62-yarder that went into the Ole Miss endzone. The Rebels failed to score a touchdown on any drive that started with a Crawshaw punt, scoring just one field goal on six drives. Ole Miss also muffed a punt from Crawshaw, which Florid recovered on the opposition’s 37-yard line.

It’s the second straight week multiple Florida Gators have been recognized as SEC Players of the Week. Following the win over LSU, DJ Lagway was named the Freshman of the Week, linebacker Shemar James got the nod on defense and kicker Trey Smack was a Special Teams Player of the Week.

Two Gators accept invites to Reese’s Senior Bowl

Florida punter Jeremy Crawshaw and defensive lineman Cam Jackson are headed to the Senior Bowl after accepting their invitations.

Florida punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] and defensive lineman [autotag]Cam Jackson[/autotag] are headed to the Senior Bowl after both accepted invitations on Thursday.

Jackson has started nine of 10 games for the Gators this season, playing more than 360 snaps for the Gators and coming off the sidelines just once (against Texas). He has amassed 28 tackles (eight solo, including one tackle for loss) and has earned a 74.7 grade on defense from Pro Football Focus, which ranks seventh in the SEC among senior defensive linemen who have played at least 250 snaps.

Crawshaw, a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, is fourth in the country with an average punt of 46.21 yards over 42 attempts — 1,987 yards total — with a long of 62 yards. He’s booted 16 balls more than 50 yards and pinned 22 inside the 20-yard line while sending just two into the endzone for a touchback.

He ranks third among all FBS punters and second in the SEC with an 86.8 grade from PFF. Although special teams kickers aren’t usually considered draft prospects, a punter this talented could warrant a reach from an NFL program.

2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl information

The 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2:30 p.m. ET at Hancock Whitney Stadium (University of Souther Alabama) in Mobile, Alabama. Five key factors in Florida football’s dominant victory over LSU

Offense, defense and special teams helped the Gators come up with a much-needed victory at home against the LSU Tigers.

Florida football (5-5, 3-4 SEC) defeated the No. 21 LSU Tigers (6 – 4, 3-3 SEC) by a score of 27-16.

Quarterback DJ Lagway started for the Gators after missing last week’s game due to a left hamstring injury and threw for 226 yards and a touchdown in his return. Freshman running back Jadan Baugh exploded for a 55-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to ultimately seal the game.

With help from the defense to seal the game, despite their shakiness on third down stops, the Gators came up with a huge win to keep their bowl-eligibility hopes alive. Florida just needs a win against either Ole Miss next week or the Florida State Seminoles to make a bowl game this season.

Here are five key factors from today’s game.

Defense starts with a bang

Florida’s defense started out the game strong. On LSU’s opening drive, the Tigers moved the ball toward midfield and were faced with a 4th-and-1 situation.

LSU decided to go for it and ran a play toward the outside that was immediately shut down by Dijon Johnson which made the Swamp deafening.

Unfortunately for the Gators’ offense, they were forced to punt because they committed two consecutive penalties to start out their drive. So the great field position went to waste.

Gators bite first

Florida started their second offensive drive on their own 20-yard line and Lagway got away with an almost sure interception on his first attempt. The ball hit the LSU defender right in the hands but he couldn’t make the catch.

A couple of plays later, Lagway completed a 34-yard pass to receiver Chimere Dike that put the Gators at midfield. Then, running back Ja’Kobi Jackson had a big run for 20 yards that placed Florida right outside the red zone.

To cap off the drive, Lagway threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to receiver Elijhah Badger who was in one-on-one coverage that gave the Gators an early 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Defensive woes on third downs

Florida had a tough time defending the Tigers on their third down attempts.

Over the course of the game, LSU was 13-for-24 on third downs and converted four of them on their fourth possession alone which resulted in a 14-play, 84-yard drive that ended in a game-tying touchdown in the second quarter.

The third-down defensive struggles allowed the Tigers to construct lengthy drives which also allowed them to dominate the time of possession. LSU had the ball for 41:43 compared to Florida’s time of possession of 18:17.

LSU was 8-for-12 on third downs in the first half and it wasn’t like the majority of them were short distances either. A lot of these conversions were on 3rd-and-long situations. But luckily toward the end of the game, Florida’s defense was able to dial in when it mattered most and slowed down those third-down conversions.

Plenty of sacks to go around

The Gators’ defense was all over Garrett Nussmeier throughout the game, especially in the second half.

Florida had a total of seven sacks and it wasn’t just from a couple of players. The sacks were spread out among multiple Gators defenders.

Linebacker Shemar James had two while defensive tackle Caleb Banks, EDGE T.J. Searcy, EDGE George Gumbs Jr. and EDGE Kamran James each came up with a sack.

It was certainly refreshing to see the Gators pass rush being as effective as they were today and it’ll be interesting to see if they can carry it over next week against a high-powered Ole Miss offense.

Special Teams delivered for the Gators

Florida’s offense struggled to find ways to get in the end zone today, but thanks to their fantastic play from junior kicker Trey Smack who kicked 2-for-2 that included a career-long field goal of 55 yards.

And let’s not forget about senior punter Jeremy Crawshaw who had all four of his punts inside the 20-yard line. In a game where field position was critical, the Gators special teams unit played a big part in their victory today.

Up next for the Gators

The Gators play their final home game of the season against the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, Nov. 23. Kickoff is set for noon ET and will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida’s Jeremy Crawshaw earns Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week

Florida’s Jeremy Crawshaw continues to rack up the hardware during his senior season in Gainesville.

Gators punter earns ‘Ray’s 8’ recognition for Week 6 performance

For the second time this fall, Jeremy Crawshaw earned a spot on the exclusive “Ray’s 8” list of top punters in college football.

The Ray Guy Award’s “Ray’s 8” for college football’s Week 6 action was announced on Tuesday, which included Florida Gators punter Jeremy Crawshaw for the second time this season following a superb effort against the UCF Knights.

The specialist from New South Wales, Australia, also earned a nod after his Week 1 effort against the Miami Hurricanes — also in the Swamp.

Crawshaw punted a total of four times against the Knights on Saturday, booting two for over 50 yards while landing three of those punts inside of the opponent’s 20-yard line. The latter includes an amazing kick that downed at the UCF three-yard line to start a drive in the second quarter.

So far this fall, the Aussie standout has punted 17 times in five games 777 total punt yards — good for a 45.7-yard average that ranks 27th in FBS this season.

Gators punter makes Ray Guy Award ‘Ray’s 8’ list for Week 1 efforts

Jeremy Crawshaw turned some heads on Saturday despite his team’s dismal performance overall.

The Ray Guy Award’s weekly “Ray’s 8” included Florida football punter Jeremy Crawshaw among its recipients for his superlative performance in the Gators’s season-opening home loss to the Miami Hurricanes.

The Australian native punted five times, dropping three kicks inside the 20-yard line and recording two for 50-plus yards, with his longest going for 61 yards to Miami’s 7-yard line. The five-year senior’s best field position punt came in the first quarter when lobbed a 38-yarder into the hands of Chimere Dike at the Miami 3-yard line.

Crashaw set career and single-season program records in career average yards per punt (46.7) and single-season yards per punt (48.9) last fall with the Orange and Blue, earning him AP All-SEC Second-Team honors. Coming into the 2024 campaign, the fifth-year senior received preseason mentions from the likes of The Sporting News, CFN, Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

About the ‘Ray’s 8’ list

Four Gators named to Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

Florida rostered isn’t loaded with Preseason All-Conference talent, but these four Gators are standing out among the rest.

The SEC released its three Preseason Coaches All-Conference Football Team rosters on Thursday, and four Florida Gators made the cut.

Running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]., cornerback [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. and punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] made the Second Team, and kicker [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag] earned Third Team honors. All four are returning players expected to lead their respective units.

Johnson has rushed for 800-plus yards in all three years of his college career, two of which came as a Gator. Last year, he split carries with Trevor Etienne, who is now with Georgia and earned a First Team nod. Fans were always going to compare the two, but this adds some fuel to the fire.

Marshall is a four-year veteran at Florida who has first-round draft hopes. He’s a former five-star recruit who hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, but he’s the clear No. 1 in the cornerbacks room in Gainesville this season.

Crawshaw and Smack are the two faces of the special team unit because they interact with the ball a lot. It’s not always up to them whether a play is a success, but they’ll receive all the praise (or criticism) after every kick.

Georgia placed a league-leading 15 players across the three rosters, followed by Alabama with 14 and Texas with 10. Twelve schools had at least one first-team All-SEC player (not Florida), and nine schools had multiple first-team selections.

All three lists can be found in their entirety here.

Coming into the 2024 campaign, the fifth-year senior has also received mentions from CFN, Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

Sporting News is one of five outlets used to determine consensus All-American status at the end of the season.

The Southeastern Conference leads the pack with 23 players selected to the first- and second-team offense, defense and special teams.

The fourth-year lineman from Lake Mary, Florida, has served as the starting long snapper for the Gators each of the previous two seasons, recording 78 total snaps in 2023 with only one missed connection with punter/holder [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] on the season.

Eight Gators on Phil Steele’s 2024 Preseason All-SEC Teams

Florida returns several of the conference’s best players, including these eight who made the Phil Steele Preseason All-SEC Teams.

The Florida Gators regularly produce some of the best talent in the SEC, so it isn’t surprising to see eight UF players named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-American Teams

A pair of seniors — running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. and punter [autotag]Jeremy Crawshaw[/autotag] — made the first team.

Johnson transferred from Lousiana, following head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and has been the main man in Florida’s backfield since. He’s passed the 800-yard mark on the ground in both of his seasons in Gainesville and scored 15 rushing touchdowns as a Gator. Crawshaw is one of the nation’s premier legs and is among the punters Florida has ever rostered.

Senior cornerback [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]. and junior inside linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] join long-snapper [autotag]Rocco Underwood[/autotag] on Steel’s All-SEC Second Team.

A former five-star recruit, Marshall has yet to live up to expectations at the college level, but he’s considered a top draft prospect and will be tested as such. James is a bit more proven, but he’s coming off a serious knee injury that could change how he plays.

Left tackle and leader of Florida offensive line [autotag]Austin Barber[/autotag] joins kicker [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag] on the Third Team.

Barber also missed time with an injury last season, but he’s the anchor in the trenches for the Gators. He’ll have some help from the transfer portal this season, but look for him to play the same role up front for UF. Smack took over the starting kicker role for [autotag]Adam Mihalek[/autotag] in 2023. He made all 29 extra points he attempted and made 17 of 21 field goals, including a pair of 50-plus-yarders.

Rounding out the list is sophomore safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag] on the Fourth Team. Pro Football Focus ranked him fifth among freshman safeties who played at least 20% of his team’s snaps.
